Wildlife extinction rates are soaring, and natural habitats are degrading faster than ever. Amid this global biodiversity crisis, the third Unearthed: Nature needs us podcast series from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is more than just a series of discussions - it's a vital dialogue about the future of our planet.
Narrated by Dr Mya-Rose Craig, an environmentalist, ornithologist, and diversity activist known as Birdgirl, the third series of the award-winning podcast takes a deeper look into transformative and nature-based solutions that harness the innate strategies biodiversity can inspire us with.
Unearthed explores the essential connections in nature’s web – from the microscopic life in our soils to the expansive forest canopies that sustain our world. Each episode highlights Kew’s pioneering research and showcases real-world conservation projects, such as seed banking, which are critical for preserving our planet's biodiversity.
Dr Craig discusses the complex ecological networks that offer revolutionary approaches to conservation.

The Stop and Frisk initiative in New York is about to get a whole lot scarier. The Maniac Cop remake is finally getting ready to shoot on location in the city, with production kicking off in the spring of 2016. John Hyams, best known for his Universal Soldier sequels Day of Reckoning and Regeneration, is directing. Cult favorite director Nicolas Winding Refn, the man behind 2011's Drive starring Ryan Gosling, will produce alongside William Lustig.
Maniac Cop has been in development since 2012. The screenplay is being penned by prolific comic book writer and raconteur Ed Brubaker. John Hyams says that William Lustig, the man who directed the original Maniac Cop trilogy, specifically sought him out for the role. The director explains.
"I'm a huge admirer of both producers and I'd been looking to do something that bridges the gap between action and horror like this. The script is able to re-invent...

Meet some of the best directors working today, who haven't gone down the blockbuster movie route...
Ever find it a bit lame when the same big name directors get kicked around for every high profile project? Christopher Nolan, Jj Abrams, maybe the Russo Brothers? With so much focus on blockbuster films these days, getting a major franchise job seems like the main acknowledgement of success for a filmmaker. And yes, both the financial and creative rewards can be great. But there are plenty of other directors out there, doing their own thing, from art house auteurs to Dtv action specialists.
Here are 25 examples.
Lee Hardcastle
Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen Lee Hardcastle’s ultraviolent claymations shared on social media. He first started getting noticed for his two-minute remake of The Thing, starring the famous stop motion penguin Pingu. Far from just a cheap one-joke mash-up,...

The labels “political” and “conscious” have been ascribed to rapper Talib Kweli throughout his music career, beginning with his start as a member of Black Star, the underground hip hop duo he founded with Mos Def 15 years ago. While he has enjoyed commercial success -- his latest album "Prisoner of Conscious," released this month, is his sixth solo venture -- Kweli has cultivated a unique hip hop voice grounded in lyricism and political awareness that has distinguished him from his mainstream rap counterparts.

Title: #ReGENERATION Director: Phillip Montgomery The social activism documentary subgenre is a rich one, but the best of these sorts of willfully disquieting films — like “The Corporation,” “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Who Killed the Electric Car?” and Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” – aren’t merely reflexive sermons to the choir, but instead movies that try to root down into systemic injustice, abuse, fraud and scientific rejection, in a fervent effort to expose the cost of continued social apathy and silence. Narrated by Ryan Gosling, the slim but still thought-provoking “#ReGENERATION” slots in nicely as a minor-chord entry of this sort. Director Phillip Montgomery’s film has an agitator’s soul, and that’s perhaps a good [ Read More ]...

If you want to make a convincing case, you need to have powerful rhetoric and/or empirical data. Phillip Montgomery's documentary ReGeneration has neither. The documentary argues that Americans, and particularly young Americans, have become apathetic towards the world's problems. Montogomery then tries to trace the causes of their apathy by tracing a path through technology, media, history, and the overwhelming nature of major issues and crises facing the world today. The movie occasionally trips over a salient or thoughtful point, but ReGeneration spends most of its time working off fallacies, personal anecdotes, and generalities. The result is a simple-minded observation that insults the viewer's intelligence and the efforts of socially-conscious teenagers. Within the first few minutes, ReGeneration proves it's working off fallacies and ignoring context. The movie opens by trying to prove how Americans have declined into apathy, and our high point was the "Greatest Generation", i.e.

Without a doubt one of the most awesome, coolest, and sought-after actors working at the moment, Ryan Gosling earned his second producing credit (after exec. producing Blue Valentine) on Phillip Montgomery’s documentary, #ReGENERATION, and lended his voice to narrate the project too.
A new trailer for the documentary has now surfaced, showing Gosling’s narration as well as the various interviews featured, including conversations with Noam Chomsky, Talib Kweli, Kalle Lasn, the late Howard Zinn, and many more.
“Beyond the labels of “Generation X” and “Generation Y,” the feature documentary film ReGeneration takes an uncompromising look at the issues facing today’s youth and young adults, and the influences that perpetuate our culture’s apathetic approach to social and political causes.

The trailer for the documentary ReGeneration has gone online. The film, produced and narrated by Ryan Gosling, argues that today's generation of teenagers and young adults are far more apathetic than previous generations. The synopsis says the doc "takes an uncompromising look at the issues facing today’s youth and young adults, and the influences that perpetuate our culture’s apathetic approach to social and political causes." Ari Hest's new record "Sunset Over Hope Street" is primarily concerned with, as he puts it, the "unease" over the passage of time. I wouldn't call it a sunny record, but it's not without hope, as it's title might suggest. There is however, no way to sugar coat this video for "Business Of America," a sobering ballad about a shallow age and bottom lines.
"Gather up the goods like a good robot / It isn't what you are it is what you got / Pay no attention to the dying man / If he ain't got cash we won't lend a hand," Hest sings to images of America's homeless and destitute. The video was directed by Phillip Montgomery, whose previous documentary "ReGeneration" (featured Noam Chomsky, and Talib Kweli with narration by Ryan Gosling) explored the cynicism and apathy prevalent in today's youth. "Sunset Over Hope Street" released March 1, 2011 via Downtown Records' Mercer Street imprint.

Ryan Gosling has signed on to narrate a new documentary about the apathy and cynicism of young people today towards social causes. It's called ReGeneration, but, like, whatever man. That's just your opinion. We don't care anyway. We're told that the film, from documentary maker Phillip Montgomery, "takes an uncompromising look at the issues facing today's youth and young adults, and the influences that perpetuate our culture's apathetic approach to social and political causes". It does this by focusing on a radical collective of musicians, a young conservative family and a group of ordinary high school students.Gosling will also be producing the film, which doesn't yet have a release date. Hey, if anything can get The Notebook generation voting, it'd be Ryan Gosling - right?...
