The last two Emmy winners for Best Unstructured Reality Program were “Love on the Spectrum U.S.” (2022) and “Welcome to Wrexham” (2023). But the two strikingly different programs haven’t gone head-to-head until now. “Wrexham” wasn’t on the air yet when “Spectrum” won, and “Spectrum” was between seasons when “Wrexham” prevailed. Now that voters will have to choose between them, which nonfiction series has the advantage?
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Wrexham” has a significant edge. The series, following actors and executive producers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney after their purchase of a Welsh football club (that’s soccer to us Yanks), won five out of its six nominations last year, including trophies for cinematography, picture editing, directing and sound mixing in addition to Best Unstructured Reality Program. The only award it lost was for sound editing. That dominant performance and its six additional nominations this year...

The international takeover of “Drag Race” is impossible to ignore.
After earning 10 Emmy nominations for Season 16 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and its sister show “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked,” the franchise brought its collective number of nominations to 85 since first airing in 2009.
In its greatest worldwide reach yet, “RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars” premiered Friday, bringing global glamazons from 12 different countries together to compete for the world title.
Tom Campbell, an executive producer since the show’s first season, told TheWrap that even he learned new things about the “Drag Race” fandom in producing the new global franchise.
“I felt I knew everything about ‘Drag Race.’ I could tell you every lip sync, who won, who didn’t win,” Campbell shared. “But now because of the international franchises, I think there are 16 or 17, it’s hard to keep up.”

The RuPaul’s Drag Race universe just got extended with new series orders.
While launching RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars, MTV and Paramount+ have ordered more RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars: Untucked.
That means RuPaul’s Drag Race is headed to a 17th season on MTV. After initially bowing on Logo back in 2009, Drag Race has since expanded internationally, too, with local editions in the U.K., Canada and Australia featuring local “queens” and runway challenges.
RuPaul’s Drag Race, MTV’s signature reality competition series, and its spinoffs are all produced by World of Wonder Productions. RuPaul executive produces Drag Race with World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.
Also returning with a new season order is the Emmy-winning after-show RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked. The latest extension of the Drag Race empire follows RuPaul receiving his...

29-time Emmy Award-winning reality competition franchise “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has been renewed for Season 17, MTV and Paramount+ announced on Friday.

While the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has gone to only two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by seven shows in the same timespan. Although the latter number has increased every year since 2020, that almost surely won’t happen in 2024, as a majority of the present contenders are past winners.
As “Welcome to Wrexham” seeks its second consecutive victory in this category, it faces one former champ it just beat (“RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked!”) and another that wasn’t eligible last time (“Love on the Spectrum”). Rounding out this lineup are veteran contender “Vanderpump Rules” and newcomer “Below Deck: Down Under,” which is part of a previously nominated franchise.

RuPaul’s Drag Race is more than just your typical reality TV competition series; it has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. The show has crowned numerous superstar drag queens who have stomped through the Werk Room, with over 100 queens competing for the highest honor in the world of drag.
Hosted by RuPaul Charles, it celebrates the artistic prowess of drag queens from diverse backgrounds and offers a glimpse into the lives of contestants who courageously share their tales of resilience in the face of discrimination and prejudice.
Since its debut in 2009, the show has consistently delivered iconic television moments, with episodes challenging contestants to showcase their ‘charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.’ Even if one doesn’t snatch the crown as the season’s winner, there’s still the opportunity to secure a coveted place in the ‘Drag Race Hall of Fame’ through RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

Below Deck Down Under can now be referred to as an Emmy-nominated show.
The Primetime Emmy Awards were announced earlier this week, and Season 2 of Below Deck Down Under made the cut.
Below Deck Med Under was nominated in two categories: Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program and Outstanding Picture Editing For An Unstructured Reality Program.
Below Deck Down Under Season 2 featured a near sexual assault that was handled perfectly by Captain Jason Chambers, Aesha Scott, and the production team.
Unsurprisingly, the show earned Emmy nominations, which are so deserved.
However, the nod has fans riled up as Season 3 of Below Deck Down Under continues to be Mia on Bravo’s schedule.

RuPaul’s DragCon LA 2024 has officially begun! Earlier today, the cowboy hat-wearing RuPaul Charles opened the festivities at the Los Angeles Convention Center with the ceremonial cutting of the pink ribbon. “Fabulous! Have a good time. I love you,” the Queen of Drag told his adoring crowd while still holding the enormous pink scissors. RuPaul’s co-producer and co-judge Michelle Visage stood beside him, and they were flanked by dozens of drag queens from the American version of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” plus many other worldwide installments. Watch the ribbon cutting video below:

Once again, the convention’s festivities are presented by World of Wonder Productions and its co-founders, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. This year’s theme is the “hottest ever” … and we’re assuming that refers to the sizzling talent that’ll be on-hand rather than the California weather.

As Hollywood begins to recover from the dual labor actions, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.
The roster covers hundreds broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting through 2023. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has reached her sweet 16.
The Emmy-winning reality competition series — which returns to MTV for its 16th season on Jan. 5 — revealed the 14 new drag queens competing for the $200,000 grand prize and the title of America’s next drag superstar on Wednesday.
The two-part series premiere will feature the queens showing off their stuff in the annual talent show, which has become a mainstay on the series. This year, however, the show — which will be themed separately for MTV’s Spring Break and the “Queen Choice Awards” — will feature a new twist in the competition: “Rate-a-Queen.” After the performances have ended, the contestants must rank their fellow queens’ performances to determine the tops and bottoms of the week.
The aftershow “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” is also returning, airing immediately following the series.

This story about “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a lot crammed into each 30-minute episode of “Untucked.” The companion show to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” captures the moments after the contestants learn whether they are safe from elimination or will lip sync for their life (and for the chance to stay another week in the drag queen competition). But “Untucked” also serves as a group therapy session, a place where they can “turn off” their drag and competitive personas and just be themselves, a rare respite in a competition where they must be constantly “on.”
“It is the moment where the queens are no longer their characters,” “Untucked” executive producer Kenneth Leslie said. “They’re with their sisters celebrating, crying, laughing. They’re going through every emotion as a human being, not as a character.

Although the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has only gone to two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by six different shows in the same stretch of time. “Love on the Spectrum” took the 2022 prize but is out of the running this time, leaving 2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” as the only show with a shot at pulling off the category’s first repeat victory in four years.
“Untucked” is one of three returning contenders in the current Best Unstructured Reality Program lineup, along with “Indian Matchmaking” and “Selling Sunset.” Both were bested by RuPaul’s series in 2021, while the latter also lost alongside it in 2022. Rounding out this bunch are “Vanderpump Rules,” which has finally broken through with Emmy voters after 10 seasons, and new show “Welcome to Wrexham,” which, according to Gold Derby’s odds, is heavily favored to win.

It's unclear whether the 2023 Emmy Awards will go forward as planned on Sept. 18 with the Writers Guild of America on strike and a Screen Actors Guild strike looming, but they're moving ahead as far as nominations go.
On July 12, the Television Academy announced this year's Emmy nominations, and standout nominees include "Succession" in its final season, with stars tapped in every drama acting category, and popular series like "The White Lotus," "Ted Lasso," and "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." Television fans were surprised to see fan-favorite stars like the cast of "The House of the Dragon" passed over for nominations, however. Other snubs included Selena Gomez and Steve Martin for "Only Murders in the Building."

You know that it’s their time: “Vanderpump Rules” has officially been nominated for its first Emmy award.
After a shell-shocking 10th season that drew in record-breaking ratings for the series and Bravo at large, the Lisa Vanderpump-led series has been named one of the five nominees for unstructured reality. It’s competing against “Deadliest Catch,” “Life Below Zero,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked,” and “Welcome To Wrexham.”
When news broke during the airing of the show’s 10th season that castmates Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix had split amid Sandoval’s ongoing affair with fellow co-star Raquel Leviss, cameras quickly began rolling to capture the fallout. The quarrel shifted the friendships of the Los Angeles-based “Vanderpump Rules” cast so much that Leviss took out a restraining order on her former best friend and co-star Scheana Shay for an alleged punching that took place when the affair was revealed.

Gold Derby caught up with Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato backstage at the 2023 edition of RuPaul’s DragCon LA, a two-day extravaganza taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In addition to winning five Emmy Awards for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (2018-21) and “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” (2021), they’ve also been producers of DragCon for World of Wonder since the very beginning. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“It started in 2015 so we’re in year eight, but we had a pandemic and things like that,” Bailey tells us. “But we’ve done DragCon in New York and the UK, so we’re fully in our eighth year, but in the 12th DragCon.”
What’s special about this year’s DragCon? Barbato declares, “This year we have over 150 ‘Drag Race’ queens from all over the world, so it’s like the United Nations of drag. There are so many queens.

RuPaul's Drag Race season 15 still has a while until someone is crowned America's Next Drag Superstar, but fans who aren't happy with some queens have used social media to retaliate anyway. The popular series turned international franchise returned on January 6, and not only introduced their largest group of 16 queens, but found a new home on MTV. With 200,000 on the line and a reputation to uphold, the competition has only grown fiercer as time has gone on.
While some RuPaul's Drag Race season 15 queens were well known to fans beforehand such as TikTok twins Sugar and Spice and Miss Continental winner Sasha Colby, the performers have gained thousands of followers since the series' return. That being said, while some of the queens have exponentially grown in popularity, others have found themselves unnecessarily criticized. The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...
