Great flick about making new friends, discovering new music, and how cool record stores used to be! Asked my wife what she thought at the end and she said "bittersweet" and I couldn't agree more. Some happy, some sad, all mixed in to one fun movie. The inner-workings of a mixed tape all flushed out - with Nick Thune as the standout imo as the gruff record store owner that takes the main character under his wing to share the love of music and mixtapes.
So whatever you might think, i have decided, and thats because im a grumpy old man with an ironic wit and have experienced a lot in a lifetime.and whenever i come over a rare movie fick like this i grab it and cram it into my breast and starts crying out loud, this was the missing link in my life!!! So if you love to hug trees, if you love to hug your nostagic lp records or the ultra extended version of a maxi-single, or you like to decorate your room with audiocassette-tape or cd's that you burned when young and now use as a window draper instead of letting your kids burn the cd, because you told them that you did so when you where young...
its a film filled with love love love, its a song filled with hope hope hope, and a story that stays on a high flux velocity even in the most sad and melanconic moments, and just makes you want that time machine to race back into the nostalgia of the 80's and 1990's...
its an extremely well made film, the gadgets, the props, the decorating, and outfit of the staging and dress code are complete and utterly like opening that door to the past. There are tears, but most of all smiles, not smirky one, its the wholeheartedly big adventorous smile the only young adolescents and teenagers can make like when peeling of the 7 layers of wrapping paper just to find the greatest wish of all unfold. The casting crew should get an award for their choice of actors. Gemma brooke allen is the new nova in the sky, and even though im a man i can feel the tingeling feeling in the belly button unwrapping along with her...
well if you wanna cheer up and love the music of the forementioned era the watch mixtape, a film that will bring nostalgia, a very nice tool to stress down from the race of social media and deadly great expectations in your life. Its not oscar worthy, but a marvel for you and you and me.

I'd give this a 6 if it was a theatrical release. But for a streaming film I give it a 7 which I feel is slightly above average.
As a person who was about the same age of the main character at the same year in time it was fun to see, even if most of the rest didn't really mimic my life. Perhaps I would have been more critical if it wasn't so suited for someone of my age. But I also was never into punk rock and never lost my parents or was raised by a non-biological parent. So some people could relate more to those components.
It seems like a good film to put on with a family with people of many ages. And it's nice to have movies like that available on Netflix.

I had no idea about this film but i liked its idea when i read its story, and as i started watching it, i was feeling really entertained with a big smile on my face until the end credits. The film has a lot of cool elements, it takes place in the late 90s, so all those from that era will feel nostalgic, also the soundtrack is a big part of the film, with classics by the Kinks, The Stooges, Cheap Trick and many more. The cast are really great, (with the lead young talented actress Gemma Brooke Allen at the helm), and each character is well-written and meaningful. The film focuses on the importance of friendship, family and being your own self while listening to awesome music. Highly recommended.
Once you put aside its Disney-esque sappiness and saccharine on its surface, Mixtape will serve you with a feel-good family drama. It's a sweet tale not only about a coming-of-age but also about bonding and eventually about coping with the bleakness of the past.
