Bono on His Movie, His Memoir and Being ‘Totally Pretentious’: ‘I Promise I’m Coming Back to Rock ‘n’ Roll’
Image
One of the most unusual visitors to this year’s Cannes Film Festival was a 65-year-old Irishman named Paul David Hewson, better known as Bono to the world at large and especially to the millions of fans of his rock band U2. In 2022, Bono wrote a memoir called “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,” which he promoted with a handful of theatrical shows in which he talked about his life, played characters including his father, with whom he had a troubled relationship, and sang a few U2 songs accompanied by the Jacknife Lee Ensemble, a cello/harp/keyboards trio that sounds nothing like U2.

The show found Bono sharing the stage with three empty chairs, which represented his missing bandmates The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. It made for a dramatic night of memories, and he upped the drama by hiring Andrew Dominik who directed “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford...

‘Bono: Stories of Surrender’ Review: U2 Frontman’s Life Story Is Grand and Bombastic, the Way We Like It
Image
Leave it to Bono to turn a book tour into something as extravagant as “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” the Apple TV+ movie that had its world premiere on Friday night at the Cannes Film Festival.

The U2 singer has never been one for half-measures or modesty, and his version of the book tour for his 2022 autobiography “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” was a dramatic, theatrical presentation that mixed memory and music to provide snapshots from his life, from a child in Dublin to an international rock star. Presented on a small number of stages around the world, most notably during a 10-night stand in New York’s Beacon Theatre, it was no book reading or stripped down “Springsteen on Broadway”-style presentation, but a sensory delight as theatrical in its own way as U2’s own performances.

And “Bono: Stories of Surrender” takes the Beacon shows as a launching pad – but...

Nick Cave at an event for Des hommes sans loi (2012)
Nick Cave Scoring Amy Winehouse Biopic ‘Back to Black’ (Exclusive)
Nick Cave at an event for Des hommes sans loi (2012)
Sam Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” may have access to the late singer’s globally recognized back catalog, but another legendary musician is lending his talents to the project.

Nick Cave, alongside his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, is scoring the StudioCanal and Focus Features film, which sees “Industry” star Marisa Abela play Winehouse. Abela is joined by a cast including Jack O’Connell (playing Blake Fielder-Civil), Eddie Marsan (Mitch Winehouse), Juliet Cowan (Janis Winehouse) and Lesley Manville.

Variety has been given an exclusive photo taken of Cave, Ellis and Taylor-Johnson recording in the studio earlier this week.

While Winehouse’s own songs, such as “Back to Black” (which featured in the recent trailer), “Valerie” and “Rehab” will undoubtedly take center stage in the film (with most recorded and performed by Abela), Cave and Ellis are understood to have composed about 20-30 minutes of music.

“Nick and Warren...

Iggy Pop, Cat Power Top Marianne Faithfull Benefit Album
Image
Two years ago, Marianne Faithfull told Rolling Stone about her ongoing battle with Covid-19. “It’s terrible,” she said. “I got long-term Covid, where you get better from the virus, but you have leftover [symptoms]. Apparently, they now think that you do get better from long-term Covid; it’s not forever. That is good.”

To help Faithfull with mounting health costs, more than a dozen artists have recorded covers of songs for a benefit album, The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, for her. Cat Power and Iggy Pop teamed to...

Nick Cave: ‘Blonde’ Is My Favorite Movie of All Time
Image
Nick Cave confirmed his favorite movie of all time is none other than “Blonde.”

The Bad Seeds frontman and frequent Andrew Dominik collaborator recorded the soundtrack for the Marilyn Monroe reimagining alongside Warren Ellis. In a “The Red Hand Files” newsletter post, Cave answered a fan question as to what his “favorite movie of all-time” is, writing, “Dear Sourav, ‘Blonde.’ Love, Nick.”

The controversial Nc-17-rated Netflix film stars Ana de Armas as Monroe, along with Bobby Cannavale, Adrian Brody, and Julianne Nicholson. Writer-director Dominik previously said that the film captures the trauma of “what it’s like to go through the Hollywood meat-grinder.”

Dominik added that the film “has very little dialogue in it” and the emphasis is on the music and “an avalanche of images and events” harkening back to the iconography of Monroe.

Musician Cave and director Dominik previously collaborated on 2007 film “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford,...

Hear Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ ‘Pearly’ From Score for Marilyn Monroe Film ‘Blonde’
Image
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have once again collaborated with director Andrew Dominik — this time for the score to the filmmaker’s upcoming Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde.

The Bad Seeds duo have shared their opening piece from the upcoming Netflix film, which arrives on the streaming service on Sept. 28; their Blonde score will also be released that day.

Like Cave’s recent LPs Ghosteen and Carnage, the ethereal “Pearly” is largely synthesizer-based, with the piece ebbing and swelling over the course of its nearly seven minutes. The title of many...

‘This Much I Know to Be True’ Trailer: Andrew Dominik Captures Nick Cave’s Zen in Pandemic Concert Doc
Image
Six years and one pandemic after director Andrew Dominik teamed with musician Nick Cave on the documentary “One More Time with Feeling,” and the collaborative duo return with another concert doc, this time in lieu of Cave’s planned early 2021 tour.

“This Much I Know to Be True” debuts July 8 on Mubi after wowing audiences at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival. Starting with Cave’s sculpture studio, the new documentary from “Blonde” writer/director Dominik captures Cave and Warren Ellis’ creative partnership, expanding on Cave’s 2014 pseudo-doc “20,000 Days on Earth.”

“In time we all find out we are not in control,” Cave says in the trailer. “We never were. We never will be.”

The existential doc takes place in an abandoned Bristol factory as Cave performs — for the first time ever — tracks from his most recent albums “Ghosteen” with his band The Bad Seeds and “Carnage” alongside Ellis. Singers and a string quartet accompany the performances,...

Andrew Dominik Says ‘Blonde’ Is About “All The Unloved Children Of The World,” Doesn’t Deserve Its Nc-17 Rating & More
Image
Today, Wednesday, May 11, as a one-time global event, filmmaker Andrew Dominik’s new documentary on musicians Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, “This Much I Know To Be True,” premieres in select theaters (check the “This Much I Know To Be True” website to see where it’s playing today near you). If Dominik’s last documentary with Cave, “One More Time With Feeling,” was a dark elegy about grief, this new one (read our review here), is much more like a spiritual, nearly gospel-like reverie about healing and the process of acceptance.

Andrew Dominik on This Much I Know to be True, his friendship with Nick Cave, Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde – and his love for Doja Cat
Andrew Dominik in L'Assassinat de Jesse James par le lâche Robert Ford (2007)
Andrew Dominik’s films may be somewhat sporadic in terms of release, but it’s always a notable event on the calendar when they hit our screens. The Australian, behind Killing Them Softly and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, is back this year, remarkably, with two movies. His first is the spellbinding documentary This Much I Know to be True, which played at the Berlinale this year – which surrounds the creative collaboration between Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, and we had the pleasure of speaking to Dominik on Zoom in the German city.

He tells us all about his relationship with Nick Cave, and how they first became friends – which is quite the story. And we discussed, of course, his forthcoming production, and second release this year, the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas. The film has already been been shrouded in controversy,...

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Prove Creative Opposites Do Attract in ‘This Much I Know to Be True’ Clip
Image
In a new clip from the forthcoming film This Much I Know to Be True, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis show that, even in creative partnerships, sometimes opposites do attract. Cutting between separately-filmed conversations with the two artists, the narrative of their collaborative nature unfolds almost comically at their contrast in perception.

Ellis’ contributions land more on the side of chaos as he pulls up the music app from a MacBook desktop overloaded with audio file icons. “I don’t really have a sense of form and order,” he explains.

There’s a Longer, Better Cut of ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,’ Director Says
Image
“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is widely regarded as both one of the best western films of the 21st century and one of the most prominent recent examples of a studio interfering with a great movie.

Andrew Dominik’s moody, contemplative western has more in common with Terrence Malick than John Ford or Howard Hawks, but there are plenty of stories of Warner Bros. trying to make the film more mainstream. However, despite a brutal editing process, Dominik was still able to release a film that illustrated his vision and earned two Oscar nominations.

But recently, the film’s production team has been speaking out about a rumored cut of the film that is even longer than the 160-minute version that hit theaters. Speaking to Collider, cinematographer Roger Deakins recently caught cinephiles’ attention when he recalled watching this longer version of the film, even if...

The Agony, Then Ecstasy, of Nick Cave: Collaborators Tell How ‘Communion’ With His Audience Transformed His Art
Image
The power of Nick Cave had forever hinged on summoning the spirits of the dark.

Be it his time as frantic frontman to the clamorous Birthday Party, or since the 1984 start of a menacing solo career with the floating membership of the Bad Seeds by his side, Cave’s catalog of violence-driven characters and furiously dire narratives cut like a knife, fresh with blood and amped-up with post-punk gospel fervor.

That all of this changed in 2015, with the tragic accidental death of Cave’s 15-year-old son, Arthur, exemplified “the crack in everything” that Leonard Cohen, a noted inspiration to Cave, wrote of on “Anthem”: “That’s how the light gets in.”

From Cave’s family tragedy, a second family emerged: that of a devoted fan base who showered the singer and author with warmth and comfort beyond fandom.

“Nick saw this incredible outpouring of love and concern for him...

‘This Much I Know To Be True’ Trailer: Andrew Dominik’s New Nick Cave & Warren Ellis Doc Arrives In May

New Zealand-born Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik might be on the precipice of a banner year. Andrew Dominik’s Blonde Officially Gets Nc-17 Rating, Trailer Arrives For His New Nick Cave & Warren Ellis Doc
Image
Shot back in 2019, it’s been a long wait for Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde to see the light of day, but it looks like 2022 is finally the year. While the director’s dreams of going to Cannes are reportedly dashed, the film has now, as expected, officially been rated Nc-17 for “some sexual content.” The director previously confirmed his adaptation of the Joyce Carol Oates novel, led by Ana de Armas, includes a rape scene.

“It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office,” Dominik said last month. “It’s an Nc-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the Nc-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

While we wait to see when Netflix will actually debut the film,...

‘This Much I Know to Be True’ Review: Andrew Dominik’s Hypnotic and Haunting Nick Cave Performance Documentary
Image
Two cameras orbit a grand piano on a circular track. Sometimes one will catch sight of the other, passing behind the black-haired singer at the keyboard, flashing between the session violinists or gliding beyond the bearded man crouched low over his synthesizer. Though this visible stagecraft draws attention to the fabrication — stage lights pop; grips wander through, adjusting the wiring — somehow the effect of Andrew Dominik’s “This Much I Know to Be True” is floaty, disembodied, hypnotic. Illuminating tracks from the superb 2019 Bad Seeds album “Ghosteen” and Cave’s 2021 collaboration with Warren Ellis, “Carnage,” .

In a ballroom clad in crumbling plasterwork (actually a disused Bristol factory space) Dominik stages the musical sections that make up most of the film, each one a bouquet of barbed wire, sung by Cave — with his ever-witchy charisma — like it’s the last song anyone will ever hear. In between are occasional off-the-cuff interviews,...

Although people have been singing along to Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for more than 40 years, it flopped when it was first released in 1984. The documentary “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song” takes us through Cohen’s career and the creation of “Hallelujah,” which he worked on for seven years.

‘This Much I Know to Be True’ Review: Andrew Dominik’s Second Nick Cave Doc Is a Joy from Start to Finish
Image
Polished in all the ways its predecessor was rough, “This Much I Know to Be True,” Andrew Dominik’s second film about Nick Cave, offers nothing close to the acute emotional experience of his previous effort — and that’s the best news of all. In 2016, the rocker and the “Assassination of Jesse James” filmmaker teamed on “One More Time with Feeling,” an ash-toned music doc that followed the singer as he grieved an incomprehensible personal loss, resulting in a roundabout portrait of raw nerves and confusion that remains a high watermark of the genre.

Unable to go on tour in early 2021 (guess the reason why), Cave re-teamed with Dominik to make big screen magic, setting up shop in an abandoned Bristol factory to record tracks from Cave’s most recent albums “Ghosteen,” with his band The Bad Seeds, and “Carnage,” with long-time collaborator Warren Ellis.

Elegant simplicity was the name of the game,...

‘This Much I Know To Be True’ Review: Andrew Dominik Captures Another Moody, Deeply Human Portrait of Nick Cave [Berlin Film Festival]
Image
Sat in front of a computer, musician Nick Cave reads a few questions aloud. These are deeply existential musings sent in by people he has never met. A teenager reflects on how daunting it is to entertain the idea of parting with the anger that has been left from the death of his brother; somewhere else in the world, a man is left to rediscover himself after losing both his wife and his job.

Berlin Review: Andrew Dominik’s Nick Cave Documentary ‘This Much I Know To Be True’
Image
Part concert film, part character portrait, Andrew Dominik’s This Much I Know To Be True is another glimpse into the life and world of musician Nick Cave. The Berlin Film Festival Berlinale Special documentary flits between interviews in his home to performances of the songs from his albums “Ghosteen” (with the Bad Seeds) and “Carnage” (with Warren Ellis).

The setting is a grand old building, and Dominik — who also shot the 2016 Cave doc One More Time With Feeling — frequently pulls back the curtain to show the filming process, whether it’s the dolly circling the singers on a track, or guest performer Marianne Faithfull demanding a touch-up before recording.

If you’re a fan of Cave’s music, there’s plenty to enjoy as he builds up from confessional piano lullabies to angry political high-energy rants. If you’re more intrigued about his character, then the real gems are elsewhere.

Why a shorter festival and smaller press corps is challenge for PRs at Berlinale 2022
Image
“There’s more of a crush over the opening weekend”, said one PR director.

International PR teams at the Berlinale are facing higher costs and scheduling complications as they juggle a shorter festival and less press and critics in town than usual.

“While I’m quite happy with the festival shaving off a few days, that has meant there’s more of a crush over the opening weekend,” said Jonathan Rutter, director of film at London-based Premier PR, which is repping seven titles in Official Selection, including Ursula Meier’s The Line in Competition.

See Nick Cave Croon ‘Lavender Fields’ in ‘This Much I Know to Be True’ Clip
Image
Nick Cave reconsiders his place in the world in a clip from the upcoming doc about him, This Much I Know to Be True. “Some years ago, I would have defined myself as a musician or a writer,” he says. “And I’m trying to wean myself off those definitions of myself that are about my occupation and see myself as a person, as a husband, as a father … and friend and citizen that makes music and writes stuff rather than the other way around.”

The clip then transitions to...

SXSW Film Festival Slates Music Docs on XXXTentacion, Sheryl Crow, Dio, Nick Cave, Tanya Tucker, Jazz Fest and More
Image
Sheryl Crow, Nick Cave, King Crimson, Dio, XXXTentacion, Tanya Tucker, Chumbawamba, Courtney Barnett, Cesária Évora and Mojo Nixon — together again for the first time: These are some of the highly diverse subjects of a slate of music documentaries set to unspool at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin March 11-20.

The 16 movies represented in the “24 Beats Per Second” lineup are nearly all world premieres, in a film festival that skews toward SXSW’s original roots as a pure music festival by always carving out a special category for features that chronicle musicians or music scenes.

The music doc coming into the festival with probably the highest level of fan anticipation is , which promises to have director Sabaah Folayan offering “a sensitive portrayal” of a precocious, highly controversial, Soundcloud-based rapper “whose acts of violence, raw musical talent and open struggles with mental health left an indelible mark on...

Berlin Fest Chief Carlo Chatrian on Gender Balance, Sigourney Weaver, Other Stars’ Travel Plans and Covid Testing
Image
Berlin Film Festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian on Wednesday unveiled the full lineup for the fest’s 72nd edition which he is hellbent on holding as an in-person event despite the global spread of the omicron variant, even after other top fests such as Sundance and Rotterdam have thrown in the towel and gone online.

Chatrian spoke to Variety about the selection and what he expects his “exercise in resistance,” as he has called it, to be like on the ground in Berlin.

One thing that I think is clear is that the global film community is supporting your determination.

Yes. Despite everything that is happening, the willingness and desire to be part of the festival on the part of production companies, sellers, actors and directors is very strong. I was even moved a couple of weeks ago when they told me that Paolo Taviani, who is 91, really wants to come at any cost.

Berlin Selection Unveiled: Claire Denis, Hong Sangsoo, Rithy Panh, Dario Argento Head to Festival
Image
Films by auteurs Claire Denis, Hong Sangsoo and Rithy Panh are part of the lineup in competition at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival.

Berlin’s 2022 selection spans 18 movies, seven directed by women, which will compete for the Golden and Silver Bears. The films originate from 15 countries, with 17 serving as world premieres. Two of the films are first features, both from women.

Artistic director Carlo Chatrian discussed the thematic throughline of “human and emotional bonds” across the selection, with the family unit serving as a key focal point in a number of movies. More than half are set in the present time, and two are within the pandemic era.

The festival hosts 12 returning filmmakers, eight of whom are in competition and five of whom already hold a Bear from Berlin.

The festival will go ahead as an in-person event, albeit with seating capacity in movie theaters reduced to 50% and without any parties or receptions.
