Synopsis

  • Abhay Gulati (Imran Khan) and Aaliya Khan (Deepika Padukone) have been friends since childhood. Aaliya has always loved acting & movies, since her mother is an actress. Aaliya's passion for movies knows no limits as she forgets homework and school and spends every waking minute in her passion for films. Abhay and Aaliya study in the same school and Abhay knows of Aaliya's passion.

Aaliya's father abandoned her and her mother. Aaliya's mother does not support her love of acting as her father was a theater actor as well. Aaliya loves the spotlight and has scant regard for what others think of her. Since then, Abhay became very protective of Aaliya. Abhay likes cooking but his father Jeet (Navin Nischol) wants him to take care of his movie theater business. Pammi (Lillete Dubey) is Abhay's aunt.

Eventually Abhay and Aaliya start dating. Abhay's sister Preeti (Divyaalakshmi) gets married. Abhay plans to propose to Aaliya at some point. Aaliya finds weddings a waste of time and does not believe in love.

Abhay and Aaliya share their life philosophy with each other. Abhay is the sentimental type, and a typical family man. Aaliya is cut to cut and to the point with everyone. She even smokes just to appear rebellious and to look "cool". Aaliya does not want to marry. She says that most people come to the wedding for free food, while men come for the free booze, most aunts complain about missing their favorite TV serials.

Aaliya encourages Abhay to tell Jeet that he is not interested in the movie theater business and wants to find his own calling in life. Abhay makes delicious sandwiches which are packaged in a very quirky way, which indicates his love for food. Aaliya is the adventurous type and wants to experience life in all its shades. Aaliya even participates in a street play by hiding it from Ayesha as she knows that Ayesha would never approve.

An opportunity comes for Aaliya to go to Australia for acting school which she takes. She does this over the objections of her mother Ayesha (Sharmila Tagore) & Abhay. Abhay is especially angry as Aaliya had not even consulted him before applying for the course. Aaliya says that she applied months ago, and it was a long shot as she never thought she would get in. Abhay says that he is tired of competing with Aaliya's lists and her plans for her life as there is no space for him in her life.

Aaliya tells Abhay that he himself is not able to find any ambition in life and has the nerve to judge her when she is following her dreams. Aaliya says that Abhay does not have a life and that she is his life. Aaliya says that Abhay does not care about her ambitions as he does not want his own life to be disturbed. Abhay says that Aaliya could not communicate properly with 2 people in life and yet she is going for a course in mass communications.

Abhay convinces Ayesha to let Aaliya go, and she agrees on the condition if Aaliya agrees not to act. Aaliya goes to Australia where she has to live with her strict aunt Khaala (Suparna Marwah). Khaala objects to Aaliya returning home late at night and breaking the house rules. She then moves into a bungalow where a bunch of young people live for cheap. The bungalow belongs to Cyrus (Yudhishtir Urs) and his sister Nadia/Nats (Shahana Goswami).

Once Aaliya moves to Gold Coast the arguments between Abhay and Aaliya increase and they mutually decide not to speak with each other for a few days. Aaliya makes friends with Rishabh (Kamlesh Ojha). When Abhay and Aaliya speak, Aaliya is in a party and Abhay has visions of Aaliya being in an alcohol fueled orgy.

Abhay gets paranoid and comes to Australia, annoying Aaliya because she feels he doesn't trust her, and they break up. Cyrus and Nadia rent him a room in the same bungalow as Abhay refuses to go back to India. He refuses to give up on them. Abhay does many odd jobs in Australia to support himself. He finally finds that people love his food and are willing to pay for it. He starts small and grows organically. Nadia notices his talent and offers him space to open a joint. Abhay opens a restaurant, and it becomes a big hit.

Aaliya and Abhay slowly become friends again. Aaliya finishes acting school and Abhay's father finds out about his restaurant. Abhay and Aaliya's mother, Ayesha come for Aaliya's graduation. Aaliya gets an opportunity to work in a movie and signs the contract without telling her mother, thereby enraging her. Soon Abhay leaves Aaliya too, because she is selfish.

Realizing she is wrong and that she can't go on without her mother's support, she quits the movie and rushes back to India to get back things on track with her mother. Soon, her mother realizes that Aaliya is strong to face the world and can come to terms with her mistakes rather easily than her mother herself was capable of, so she allows her to act in the movie and sends her back again. Soon, she returns to the same Australian city for shooting her movie. After an year she meets Abhay, who tells her he still hasn't moved on. She apparently, convinces him to move on and get married.

However, she is stunned when she comes to know from another friend that Abhay is going to be married. Puzzled as to why he didn't tell her first about the news, Aaliya rushes to Abhay's house and finds him getting ready to get married. Aaliya begs him to re-think his decision, proposing to him with the very ring he was considering for her once upon a time.

She confesses her love to him and tells him that she is really in love with him. Abhay, realizing Aaliya's regret and love for him, shows her his wedding invitation which has her name, implying he intended to marry her all along. She is happy and they embrace, making up. The end credits show that the two have married and have a baby girl named Sara.
