Not So Lucky

There’s a new face in Port Charles. Charlie Besso plays Tobias, Aiden’s (Colin Cassidy) boyfriend. He has been spoken about around the house but never seen until now.

Aiden brought Tobias home to meet his mom, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), who he adores. She is a great mom who has always cared for all three of her boys. Liz has been spending a lot of time with Aiden’s dad, Lucky (Jonathan Jackson), and he happened to have been at the house when Aiden had Tobias over. Liz’s son wasn’t expecting to introduce Dad, but that’s what he did (Guy Wilson was temporarily playing Lucky).

Lucky has been pretty absent in both mother and son’s lives for quite some time.

General Hospital (Gh) spoilers indicate a new face is about to hit the land of Port Charles! That’s because soap newcomer, actor Charlie Besso, is slated to join the cast on Tuesday, February 18, playing the role of Tobias.

Tobias’ Connection to Aiden Spencer

Gh fans may recall the name Tobias from a December 20, 2023, episode, when Aiden Spencer (Colin Cassidy) first came out to his mom, Elizabeth Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst).

The two were preparing a Christmas meal when the boy mentioned his crush, and of course, Liz happily accepted what Aiden had to tell her.

While Valentine’s Day is a thing of the past in the real world, Gh will be celebrating the holiday during Tuesday’s show.

Aiden will introduce Tobias to his parents, Elizabeth and Lucky Spencer. In addition, during the epi, Days of Our Lives alum will temporarily step in as Lucky, who is normally played by Jonathan Jackson.

Daytime newcomer Charlie Besso has been cast as Tobias on “General Hospital,” Soap Opera Network can confirm. He first airs on the Tuesday, February 18 episode of the drama series.

Tobias was first referenced in the December 20, 2023 episode, wherein Aiden (then played by Enzo De Angelis), came out to his mother, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), for the first time as they prepared a Christmas meal together and Aiden reveled in his passion for culinary arts.

In Tuesday’s episode, which sees Port Charles celebrating Valentine’s Day, Aiden (Colin Cassidy) introduces Tobias to his parents as the young couple prepare to go skating together.

The episode also sees former “Days of our Lives” star Guy Wilson (ex-Will Horton) temporarily appearing on the soap as Lucky Spencer, Aiden’s father.

Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force, the studio behind FX’s “Pose,” “American Crime Story” and the upcoming “Say Nothing,” has renewed its producing deal with the network through 2027, which will mark 15 years of partnership.

The production company teamed up with FX back in 2012 when they struck a first-look deal following the success of “American Crime Story: The People V Oj Simpson.”

The partnership has gone on garner 26 Emmy wins and 66 nominations. Jacobson and Simpson have won two Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, three TCA Awards, three Critics Choice Awards, two PGA Awards, three AFI Awards, two GLAAD Awards, as well as a BAFTA Award, an NAACP Award and a Peabody.

The company has hired Checka Propper in the role. Propper joins from David E. Kelley Productions, where she was EVP, All Media.

This comes as the company has renewed its overall deal with FX for a further three. Year. The deal, which will run through 2027, will see Color Force stay in business with the Disney-owned network for 15 years.

At David E. Kelley Productions, Propper helped bring in Margo’s Got Money Troubles, which received a straight-to-series order from Apple. Before that, she was VP, Television at Doug Liman’s Hypnotic and began her career at Fox and MTV. Her credits including Peacock’s The Calling and YouTube’s Impulse.

Exclusive: Matthew Del Negro (City on a Hill) is joining season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown.

Del Negro will play the role of Will Breen, a charming, seemingly good natured corrections officer at the Kingstown Women’s Prison. He will recur for five episodes.

The 10-episode third season of the Paramount+ drama series will premiere Sunday, June 2. In Season 3, a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) to end the war but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.

DC/Dox has unveiled the lineup for its second annual edition, which takes place in Washington, D.C., from June 13-16. The documentary festival will kick things off with “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” the Warner Bros. Discovery film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year.

Peacock’s limited suspense thriller Long Bright River, based on the New York Times bestseller by Liz Moore, has added six in recurring roles: Dash Mihok (Ray Donovan), Britne Oldford (Dead Ringers), Matthew Del Negro (City on a Hill), Harriet Sansom Harris (Hacks), Patch Darragh (Succession), and Perry Mattfeld (In the Dark).

Mihok plays Eddie, with Oldford as Aura, Del Negro as Simon, Harris as Mrs. Mahon, Darragh as Sergeant Kevin Ahearn, and Mattfeld as Paula. As previously announced, Amanda Seyfried and Nicholas Pinnock lead a cast, also featuring Ashleigh Cummings, Callum Vinson, and John Doman.

After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.

Keshet Studios, the production company behind National Geographic’s “A Small Light,” Apple TV+’s “Echo 3” and NBC’s “La Brea,” is pushing into the world of unscripted television. The studio owned by global producer and distributor Keshet International has appointed Rebecca Mayer as its executive vice president of unscripted and Benjamin Long as VP of unscripted, two newly created roles.

Together Mayer and Long will work to build out a non-scripted slate of entertainment for U.S. broadcast, cable and streaming markets. They will also develop original IP while keeping the door open for these new projects to be distributed internationally. Rebecca will report to Peter Traugott, president of Keshet Studios, and Long will report to Mayer.

Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker cracked a glass ceiling on Sunday, becoming the first woman to win the American Society of Cinematographers Award in the feature competition during the 37th ASC Awards.

The crowd at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom erupted with applause and gave Walker a lengthy standing ovation as her name was called.

“This is for all the women that win this award after me,” she said to enthusiastic applause, and she looked for to more women breaking more glass ceilings. “Thijs is an inclusive, representative community,” she said, adding, “I didn’t cry, I thought I was going to cry.”

She thanked Elvis director Baz Luhrmann for allowing her to “create magic with him;” Catherine Martin for her “support and inspiration; and her crew for “dancing with the camera and flying with the camera” during Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis.

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.

Walker now has the chance to become the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography, where she is also the third female nominee in the gender-neutral Oscars category that took the longest to nominate a woman. The American Society of Cinematographers has unveiled the nominations for its 37th annual ASC Awards, honoring the year’s best in feature film, documentary and television cinematography.

The society’s marquee Theatrical Feature Film nominees are Roger Deakins for Empire of Light, Greig Fraser for The Batman , Darius Khondji for Bardo, Claudio Miranda for Top Gun: Maverick and Mandy Walker for Elvis.

Fraser won the ASC’s top prize last year for Dune, en route to winning the Cinematography Oscar. The ASC film winner has won the Academy Award nearly half of the time — 17 times in its 36 years.

On the small-screen front, the only program that made a return trip to the nominations was Hacks, which again is up for Episode of a Half-Hour Television Series.

The cinematographers of “The Batman,” “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” “Elvis,” “Empire of Light” and “Top Gun: Maverick” have received nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers, the ASC announced on Monday.

Last year’s winner, “Dune” cinematographer Greig Fraser, was nominated again for “The Batman.” Darius Khondji received the nomination for “Bardo,” Claudio Miranda for “Top Gun,” Mandy Walker for “Elvis” and cinematography legend Roger Deakins received his record 17th ASC nomination for “Empire of Light.”

The nomination makes “Elvis” cinematographer Mandy Walker only the third woman to be nominated in the top feature-film category by the ASC, after Rachel Morrison for “Black Panther” and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog.” No female cinematographer has ever won in the category.

The feature nominees in the competitive 37th ASC Awards race are Walker; Roger Deakins for Empire of Light; Greig Fraser for The Batman; Darius Khondji for Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths; and Claudio Miranda for Top Gun: Maverick.

Walker is now in a select group of just three women who have been nominated in the ASC feature competition. Rachel Morrison was nominated in 2018 for Mudbound, followed by Ari Wegner, who was nominated in 2022 for The Power of the Dog. Morrison and Wegner both went on to earn historic Oscar nominations.

With his work on Sam Mendes’ drama Empire of Light, Deakins extends his record number of ASC feature nominations to a remarkable 17 noms.

Theoretically, what sets Peacock’s The Calling apart from the gazillions of other cop dramas already in existence is that its protagonist, Avi (Jeff Wilbusch), is not only deeply religious, but guided by his Jewish faith in his work as a detective. When a greener colleague, Janine (Juliana Canfield), comments in the premiere on his knack for drawing out a suspect by expressing compassion, Avi rejects the notion that it’s merely a professional “trick.”

“The Talmud teaches us to see a single human being as the whole world, that each person is entitled to infinite respect and concern. Everyone is precious,” he loftily informs her, and he means it.

But The Calling, from David E. Kelley, seems only so interested in exploring the nuanced relationship between Avi’s beliefs and Avi’s job, or for that matter in ethical or emotional complications of any sort.

Several times throughout The Calling, the second lackluster crime drama from David E. Kelley this year, we hear characters reference another show: Law & Order. Specifically, Janine Harris (Juliana Canfield) explains to her partner Avraham Avraham (Jeff Wilbusch) that she actually joined the NYPD because of her love of the show. This mostly odd statement feels like a throwaway joke that the two will occasionally reference, but it ends up becoming particularly telling when the show itself just begins to seem like it, too, wants to be like Law & Order. The only difference is that The Calling takes the mold of that show and attempts to stretch it, creating an experience centered around a potentially compelling character study that becomes saddled by two primary cases which lack the intrigue to justify its length.

SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture formed by Sky parent Comcast and Showtime owner Paramount Global, has set Dec. 14 as the launch date for its first Central and Eastern European markets.

SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan revealed the news during an on-stage appearance at the brand’s official launch event in Amsterdam, Netherlands on Thursday evening.
