Exclusive: Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight franchise) have wrapped on Liz Here Now, a new indie drama from director Sterling Macer Jr.
Shot in Lexington, Ky, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Todd Connor. The story follows Liz Baxter (Ellis-Taylor), who works as a nanny for a prominent, white family in Oakland, California during the rise of the Black Panther Party in 1967. When Liz discovers that the Connor children are suffering under the hand of their mother, Jane (Lefevre), and attempts to step in to protect the children, she’s accused of participating in a Black Panther conspiracy.
In a statement on the project, Macer Jr. told Deadline, “Our approach to Liz Here Now is a kind of deconstruction of the black maid’s story, and to a degree, bends the genre of the civil rights era domestic drama,...

Chris Young thanked fans for their support following his recent ordeal, and as a show of his appreciation, the country star is dropping a new song on Friday.
Young was initially arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault of an officer in January following an incident with an agent for the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission at a Nashville bar. However, after surveillance video showed that Young was not the aggressor in the altercation, the charges were quickly dismissed.

Neil Breen is a lesser-known director who deserves the title of King of so-bad-they're-good movies, with his surreal and self-funded films. Breen's films, such as "Double Down," "I Am Here....Now," and "Fateful Findings," are a stroke of Breen-ius in storytelling, VFX, acting, and editing, making Wiseau's "The Room" seem high-budget in comparison. Breen has gained a cult following, with his films being screened in film courses and colleges, and his unconventional methods of purchasing DVDs and his extensive list of drinking game rules add to his bizarre reputation.
A perfect so-bad-it's-good movie is something of an art form in itself. There are a lot of movies that toe the incredibly thin line, and there are more movies than anyone can possibly watch in a lifetime that are just objectively bad, but sometimes one director comes along and produces misshapen gem after misshapen gem in the unique genre.

13 years ago, KFC created a social media sensation when it introduced the Double Down, a sandwich that replaces buns with pieces of fried chicken. After discontinuing the Double Down in 2014, KFC chose to bring it back in 2023.
To build hype for the sandwich’s return, the home of Colonel Sanders turned to Ludwig Ahgren. The streamer known by the mononymous handle Ludwig produced and starred in a KFC commercial featuring the Double Down.
The ad aired for the first time during the 2023 Streamer Awards, which was produced and hosted by Ahgren’s girlfriend QTCinderella. At the start of the 90-second spot, Ahgren finds himself in a hole at the blackjack table. After getting his hands on a KFC sandwich, the YouTube star chooses to “double down,” and his luck quickly changes course. All bets are off when Lucy and Tim hit Sin City, as seen in our exclusive first photo from Season 5 of ABC’s The Rookie.
When last we tuned into the light procedural from showrunner Alexi Hawley, Sergeant Bradford (played by Eric Winter) had been sent undercover as a drug dealer named Jake, who he happened to look a lot like (save for some prominent tattoos). Later in that Season 4 finale, after the team laid eyes on Jake’s girlfriend, it was decided that Officer Chen (Melissa O’Neil) could/would pass herself off as (ahem) Juicy.

The Circus, Showtime’s political docuseries, is returning for the second half of its fifth season on August 16. Co-host John Heilemann said the show likely will look different as a result of the production challenges faced shooting a series during the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking on the Campaign HQ podcast, hosted by President Barack Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe, Heilemann opened up about how production might look on its return and teased a slightly extended run past November depending on the election result.
Heilemann called The Circus the “ultimate field show.” He said that he and fellow hosts Alex Wagner and Mark McKinnon previously shot about 15 interviews for each 30-minute show. “That means there’s four camera crews who are on planes almost every day,” he said, “and we’re deciding on a daily basis where the three hosts are going and the crews are going. It’s been a confusing ride trying to keep up with what’s happening with Warner Bros.’ Flash movie, to say the least.
Take the story of its leading lady, for example. Kiersey Clemons was originally cast as Barry Allen’s love interest Iris West by Rick Famuyiwa before he vacated the project. She stayed on, though, even filming a scene for Justice League. This was removed from the theatrical cut, however, spawning rumors that Clemons would be recast. Last we heard, though, she was still on the board to star opposite Ezra Miller.
Now, a new leak, if it’s to be believed, confirms this, claiming that Clemons is still very much a part of The Flash and has also been given a lot of “creative control” over the role in order to flesh out Iris West however she sees fit. If true, this is a smart move on WB’s part,...

No. No, no, no, no, no. Just no. Whoever thought the plot of NCIS Season 15 Episode 18 was a good idea... just no. Wait a minute: this one was authored by none other than Christopher J. Waild!
It's not often that I call out screenwriters, but this same Mr. Waild was behind two of this season's weaker entries, NCIS Season 15 Episode 3, "Exit Strategy," and NCIS Season 15 Episode 10, "Double Down."
Both the aforementioned episodes required multiple characters to make mind-bogglingly poor decisions in order for the plot to unfold. "Death From Above" featured not just that but the protagonists being defeated by their own defense measures!
By the time the credits rolled, I seriously wanted to take this story and throw it into the burning pile in the evidence garage.

Last time on NCIS, Delilah and McGee finally welcomed their twins and named the boy Johnny and the girl Morgan. I love the names, but I was hoping that there would be a nod to Gibbs somehow when the monikers were revealed.
The winter finale of NCIS season 15, "Double Down," has Torres and Jack tasked with protecting a senator on his journey back from Afghanistan. That doesn't sound like a recipe for holiday cheer.

As is often the case, Donald Trump’s most recent Twitter tantrum has resulted in widespread condemnation — even from frequent allies. More players than ever before kneeled during the national anthem before several NFL games today, less than 48 hours after Trump referred to former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as a “son of a bitch” for doing so last season. Here’s what prominent voices from the film and TV world have to say.

A new healthcare bill is set to be voted on in the Senate next week and all of Puerto Rico is without power in the wake of Hurricane Maria, so of course Donald Trump is focusing on what really matters: professional athletes whose opinions make him angry. He referred to Colin Kaepernick as a “son of a bitch” who should “get off the field right now” for kneeling during the national anthem as an act of protest, prompting a pointed response from “Will & Grace” co-creator David Kohan during a Tribeca TV panel yesterday.

One of the more eyebrow-raising moments of the 69th annual Emmy Awards came when Sterling K. Brown, accepting the award for Best Actor in a Drama (the first time the Emmy had gone to an African-American man since Andre Braugher in 1998, whom Brown name-checked), was cut off mid-speech. It’s a pattern familiar to those who watch awards shows, especially given that the award was one of the last of the night. But exactly how long had Brown been talking at that point? And how did the length of his speech compare to others of the evening?
IndieWire crunched the numbers and has the answers. We clocked the runtimes for each acceptance speech (as hosted on CBS’s official YouTube page), beginning our timer with the first word or “Ummmm” spoken into the microphone, listing them in ascending order of length. There’s no explicit pattern to why a speech...

Sean Spicer’s Emmy Appearance: Seth Rogen, Jenny Slate, and More Slam Former Press Secretary’s Cameo
Stephen Colbert caused controversy last night at the 69th Annual Emmy Awards by bringing former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer out on stage. Award shows are known to stir the pot, whether intentionally or not, but some viewers felt the appearance was far from the right move.
The whole bit felt ironic after Colbert’s grand opening sequence centered around using TV to escape the horrors of the current political climate. Despite a touching sentiment featuring the stars of “The Americans” singing “Even treason’s better on TV” and a cameo by Chance The Rapper, Spicer undid any lasting shmaltz.
The choice to humanize Sean Spicer after he had worked to publicly defend Donald Trump and his administration struck some audiences as distasteful. Celebrities took to their Twitter platform after the fact and voiced their strong opinions — and some couldn’t even be contained in 140 characters.
I'm not ready to laugh "with" Sean Spicer.

The Emmys were dominated by an incredible batch of winners (Ann Dowd! Donald Glover!) and a very unfortunate cameo from Sean Spicer, but the one moment that’s not getting nearly enough attention is Chance the Rapper’s surprise appearance in Stephen Colbert’s pre-taped introduction. The three-time Grammy winner was featured in a quick aside where he performed a couple verses that basically turned him into a socially-conscious television critic. Anyone familiar with Chance was hardly surprised.

After raking in a slew of Emmys on Sunday night, bringing the grand total to eight for “Big Little Lies,” it’s clear that HBO would be wise to bring it back for another season. The limited series, however, is based on a standalone novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, who hadn’t written a sequel… yet.
Backstage after the show’s big win for Outstanding Limited Series, Moriarty said, “I’m thinking about it. It’s a beautiful possibility. That’s all I’ll say.”
Stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who are both executive producers on the series, also weighed in on the show’s possible return. Witherspoon, who had lost the Lead Actress award to Kidman, said, “You already know we’re liars, you shouldn’t trust anything we say. We’re thinking about it, we’re talking about it, we’re discussing it, but nothing definitive yet.
Last year, one of the biggest Emmys stories had nothing to do with the 2016 ceremony.
People wouldn’t stop talking about “The Night Of,” a summer sensation among viewers and critics that debuted in mid-June on HBO. The limited series aired its first episode before the Emmy nominations were announced and its last episode nearly a month before the ceremony took place.
And yet, “The Night Of” was nowhere to be seen on Emmys night; it wasn’t eligible.

Lots of statues were handed out during the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, a night filled with big triumphs and only a few major disappointments. It was an exciting night for diversity, an exciting night for women in front of the camera as well as behind the scenes, and an exciting night for fans of Donald Glover. Below are some of the notable winners and losers from the evening, including one cameo that didn’t do anyone any favors.
Winner: “Veep”
People were unsure how the frequent Emmy powerhouse might perform, since the news about it ending with Season 7 came out after nominations voting had closed. The answer: as well as usual, with star Julia Louis-Drefyus breaking records for with her historic sixth win for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy.

“Westworld” was an Emmy winner in 2017.
Despite not hearing its name called at the Primetime Emmy Awards, the HBO drama snagged five Emmy awards at the Creative Arts ceremonies the weekend prior. Yes, those five early wins were supposed to signal more to come on Sunday, September 17, but that didn’t happen. “Westworld” went home empty-handed, capping its total win count at five.
Now, however, is not the time for fear, “Westworld” fans. HBO’s big bet to replace “Game of Thrones” during its year-off from the Emmys had already beaten expectations by pulling in 22 total nominations — tied for the most of any program in 2017 with “SNL” — but its showing at the Emmys is more important for the future than the present. It all-but-guaranteed “Westworld” will be a major player in 2018. In fact, it might be HBO’s new frontrunner, surpassing two-time champion “Game of Thrones,” and here’s why:...

Everything started so well.
Stephen Colbert, a talented song-and-dance man, started the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards with a charming, tightly choreographed musical number featuring an array of TV’s favorite faces. Julia Louis-Dreyfus showed up as a president who’s “not beloved by Nazis.” Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys donned wigs to joke about treason. Even Archer popped up — as Colbert slid into animated form — and made a quick, always welcome “phrasing!” joke.

The streaming TV biz passed the ultimate Emmy threshold on Sunday night, as Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” made history.
“Handmaid’s Tale” picked up the win for outstanding drama series, which represents the first time a streaming service had one won of the top Emmy series prizes. It was just four years ago, in 2013, that Netflix became the first streaming platform to win an Emmy, as “House of Cards” picked up a handful of victories.
“Streaming has arrived, and we’re here to say what a wonderful journey,” said “Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Warren Littlefield. Added exec producer Bruce Miller: “The way Hulu handled our show, they were bold and behind us and committed to making something interesting.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming makes the franchise feel fresh, without sacrificing its core values. What can Hollywood learn from that?
This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is looking like a huge success already. Big bucks are being brought in at the global box office, the reviews have been glowing, and much of the casual down-the-pub level scuttlebutt seems to be positive as well. This is a remarkable feat, considering that this is the second attempt this decade to reboot Spidey’s cinematic saga.
So, what works so well about it? What lessons can Hollywood learn about reboots from the success of Homecoming? We did a bit of thinking, and came up with this list of things that make the film feel fresh, despite its reboot status...

The live-action Beauty and the Beast could stop selling itself and not have a worry in the world, but there’s a demographic out there that really wants to see the movie, but figures they’ll wait until they can get it at home, and if you’re in that demo, Disney is after you.
The final trailer is an impressive 2:30, and it shows off a lot of what you’re going to see in the film, whether that means the range of characters, the gorgeous backdrops, or the more “action-y” bits, and while it all looks pretty fantastic, it looks rather familiar as well.
There isn’t much question that this is going to be one of the biggest draws of the year, and you have to accept that clearly Disney is sparing no expense to put together something that looks like its going to be pretty awesome.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday morning. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What director, living or dead, would you choose to direct a film about the 2016 election cycle, and what might their film be like?
Charles Bramesco (@intothecrevasse), Freelancer for Rolling Stone, The Verge, Vulture
Of course someone’s going to eventually make a movie about the surreal national night-terror that is this election process, but man, it’s going to be weird. Between three and five previously unthinkable things have happened every week, to the point where observers will jest (usually in between heaving sobs and hearty swigs of brown liquor) that this all feels like a funhouse-mirror parody of American politics. Who do you call,...

Editor’s Note: Christopher Rufo and Keith Ochwat, like many documentary filmmakers, found a great story they hoped would find an audience and a distributor at a major festival. What they quickly discovered is that sans Oscar potential, a celebrity subject or a slam-dunk marketing hook, nonfiction filmmakers are responsible for finding their film’s unique audience themselves.
But what do you do once you’ve identified that niche audience? How do you make money?
Through trial and error — and a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit — the filmmaking duo behind “Age of Champions” made $1.5 million self-distributing their film. IndieWire recently asked Rufo and Ochwat how they did it, and we were pleasantly surprised that they wrote this clear-eyed essay, which includes real dollar amounts and some cold, hard business advice.

Writer/Director/Producer/Editor/Actor/Music Supervisor Neil Breen throws himself against the dry ground of the Nevada desert, articulating the existential climax of his dense, bewildering, remarkable film Double Down by screaming, “I’m an American. I’m an American! I love this country, my country!” Breen plays a mercenary computer hacker who abandoned his work as a military fighter pilot after somebody (?) shoots and kills his fiancée during a naked lounging session in his pool. Breen’s character’s dramatic outpouring of patriotic guilt promises a return to moral fortitude after serving whatever moneyed interests pay him the highest dollar – in this case, an unidentified foreign nation instructing him to singlehandedly shut down the Las Vegas strip for two months.
