The growing appetite for Australia-India co-productions has spawned a new financing entity designed to bridge the two markets with structured investment and cultural authenticity.
Southern Sitara, unveiled at the Cannes Film Market, represents the latest effort to capitalize on the bilateral co-production treaty between the two countries, targeting features in the AUD5-11 million ($3.2-7 million) range through a hybrid capital model that combines proprietary funds with co-raised investment.
The venture brings together investment duo Roshni Pandey and Jagdish Sidhu — who oversee portfolios spanning Southeast Asia, London and Australia — with filmmaker Anupam Sharma, architect of the Australia India Film Fund. The trio will partner with production house Temple, which operates from Disney Studios Australia in Sydney.
“Australia provides unprecedented support to screen professionals,” said Sharma. “Southern Sitara builds on this to enable authentic cultural storytelling.”

Since exploding onto screens way back in 2008, Liam Neeson’s Taken has had a lasting impact on the world of action movies. And that impact continues, with an all-new action thriller taking some cues from director Pierre Morel and writers Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen’s tale of a former CIA agent on a mission to rescue his kidnapped daughter. A tale that transformed Neeson into the quintessential aged action hero.
Now, the upcoming action thriller On the Hunt will put a female-led spin on proceedings, with Australian actress Nicky Whelan(The Flood) following in Bryan Mills’ footsteps as an ex-special forces operative who brings her particular set of skills out of retirement after her daughter is abducted by human traffickers. You'd think that these capable action heroes would be able to keep a better eye on their kids...

The 70th David di Donatello Awards, held at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, marked a pivotal moment for Italian cinema as women filmmakers emerged at the forefront of the country’s most prestigious film honors. Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio dominated the evening, winning seven awards, while major honors were also claimed by Valeria Golino and Margherita Vicario, signaling a broad shift in creative leadership and recognition.
Delpero’s wartime drama, set in 1944 in an isolated Alpine village, earned the top prizes: Best Film and Best Director. She became the first woman to receive the directing award in the seven-decade history of the event. Only two women had previously taken the Best Film category. Vermiglio also collected awards for Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound, Casting, and Production. These achievements reflect both the artistic ambition of the film and its technical command across multiple disciplines.

Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio took home Best Film and Director at the 70th edition of Italy’s David di Donatello Awards on Wednesday evening, in an historic win for a female director.
Delpero is the first woman to win the David di Donatello Best Director prize in the history of the awards, and only the third female filmmaker to win Best Film.
The film picked up seven David di Donatellos in total which also included Best Original Screenplay, Casting, Producer, Cinematography and Sound.
Set in a remote mountain village in 1944, Vermiglio revolves around a family whose life is disrupted by the arrival of a deserted soldier. The feature world premiered in Venice where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize and went on to be Italy’s 2025 Oscars submission.

Mad Men was a loved show among fans and one aspect that drew them to the series was the near-accurate portrayal of the ’60s. The Jon Hamm series not only covered the small details of the time but also often delved into the politics of the period. During the sixth season portraying the year 1968, creator Matthew Weiner made sure to include many references from the country’s political history.

When asked about the historical references in Mad Men Season 6, Weiner shared that he wanted to address these issues primarily because of the political landscape of the country during the time of the airing of the series. The political events of 1968 are accurately reflected in the series, where the characters struggle to adjust to the changing office dynamics.

When Kenan Thompson joined Saturday Night Live in 2003, it was noted that he was the show’s first cast member to be born after the 1975 premiere (Thompson wasn’t born until ’78). These days, he’s known as the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history, as he has been on there for 22 seasons – leaving the previous record, Darrell Hammond’s 14 season run (before he moved on to being the show’s announcer), in the dust. Now, Variety reports that, in addition to continuing to bring laughs to network television on a weekly basis, Thompson is also executive producing a campy horror comedy film called Halloween Store.

Last year, we learned that, forty-nine years after playing a major role in the Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (and fourteen years after making an appearance in Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D), Richard Dreyfuss had been cast in another film that promises to be packed with aquatic thrills, Vigilante Diaries director Christian Sesma’s Into the Deep. The film received a digital, On Demand, and limited theatrical release last Friday, and will be getting a DVD and Blu-ray release in the UK on February 3rd. To promote these releases, a clip from the film has dropped online and can be seen in the embed above. Dreyfuss got attacked while in a cage in Jaws, and this clip shows Into the Deep‘s version of a cage attack.

1792 was a turbulent time in Paris. As the French Revolution raged outside the dilapidated walls of the Tour du Temple, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette faced an uncertain future behind those walls. Once the most powerful monarchs in Europe, ruling over the opulent court at Versailles, they had been deposed and cast into an isolated prison to await their fate.
Director Gianluca Jodice’s historical drama “The Flood” shines a light on this difficult period in the lives of the hapless royal couple. Focusing on their imprisonment in the dreary Tower ahead of their executions, the film is based on accounts from the journal of Louis’ valet, Jean-Baptiste Cléry, played in the film by Fabrizio Rongione.
Gone are the lavish parties and designer dresses of Versailles. In their dank cell in the Tower, Louis (Guillaume Canet) and Marie Antoinette (Mélanie Laurent) struggle to adjust to their new circumstances with dignity.

The court of Louis XVI is stripped to a faded, festering husk of itself in “The Flood,” a stark study of the king’s last days in which the luxurious trappings of French monarchy disappear before our eyes — until only its literal architecture remains. An impressively severe second feature by Italian director Gianluca Jodice, this is a brisk rejoinder to past cinematic portraits of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette that have rendered even their downfall in the most lavish way possible.
Such spectacle can have its own ironic purpose, as with the pointed whipped-cream excess of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 vision. But here, as played by Guillaume Canet and a blistering Mélanie Laurent, the deposed, imprisoned monarchs are mocked by whatever finery they’ve held onto: Looking shrunken and freeze-dried in their dirtied robes and increasingly unkempt wigs, they’re dead well ahead of their date with the guillotine. Mélanie Laurent is Marie Antoinette and Guillaume Canet her husband Louis XVI in Italian director Gianluca Jodice’s Le Déluge (The Flood), which opened the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday night in the Swiss town’s Piazza Grande, which seats 8,000 people during the fest.
On Thursday afternoon, the two stars, along with their director, met members of the press to discuss the movie, which is set in 1792 when the two main characters and their children were arrested and imprisoned in a chateau in Paris, awaiting their trial.
THR‘s Locarno review called the movie “an intriguing palace drama chronicling the last days of France’s ultimate royal couple,” also highlighting that “nuanced performances from both Canet and Laurent help to make the famous couple more than mere caricatures.”

The famous French saying, “Après moi, le déluge” (“After me, the flood”) has often been attributed to Louis Xv, who used it to express his total disinterest in what would happen to the world after his own demise. If things fell apart, well, too bad. And yet it’s the king’s own grandson, Louis XVI, who was ousted from power during the French Revolution and died on the guillotine, to whom the quote is most applicable. His death, as well as that of his wife, Marie-Antoinette, marked the end of the monarchy and the height of the Reign of Terror. It was also the start of one of the first modern democracies, with all its grandeurs and flaws.

Founded in 1946, Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is one of the world’s longest-running film festivals, known for its adventurous programming, exciting retrospectives, and nightly open-air screenings in the Piazza Grande, capable of seating 8,000 spectators. The latter is by no means the only screening spot, but it’s the location most associated with the festival.
Hosting world premieres and special screenings of highlights from Cannes, SXSW, and other early-year festivals, this year’s Piazza Grande selection includes the launch of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette portrait “The Flood,” starring Guillaume Canet and Mélanie Laurent; Bérénice Béjo-led thriller “Mexico 86”; Mohammad Rasoulof’s Cannes prizewinner “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”; actor Paz Vega’s directorial debut “Rita”; and the world premiere of Tarsem Singh’s restored recut of “The Fall.”

Halo season 2 improved by strengthening its ties to the source material, but it was too little, too late. Halo season 3 would have finally delved into Halo: Combat Evolved's story and resolved cliffhangers from season 2, making the show's cancelation more frustrating. Paramount+ likely canceled Halo due to staggering costs and an inability to recoup fans' goodwill.
I'll be the first to admit it: Paramount+'s Halo TV show wasn't very good, but I'm still frustrated by its cancelation. In its first season, Halo was universally panned by critics and audiences alike. It wasn't a faithful Halo adaptation, but it was also just mid-level sci-fi fare at best. I was surprised by just how much Halo season 2 tried to correct course after its first outing's missteps. Obviously, there were certain elements the Covenant's Blessed One concept, for starters that the series couldn't completely retcon or erase, but it certainly did damage control.

Crobot have announced a new album, Obsidian, arriving September 13th. The Pennsylvania hard rockers also offered up the lead single “Come Down.”
The track was co-written and conceived by drummer Dan Ryan and opens with a barrage of percussion and a soaring vocal intro. The ensuing combination of chugging metallic riffs, dark atmospherics, and Brandon Yeagley’s world-class pipes harkens back to vintage Soundgarden/Alice in Chains, setting the table for Crobot’s most “introspective” album to date.
“As we started demoing songs,“ guitarist Chris Bishop explained in the press release, “the music was being pushed more and more into a heavier, darker, more metal direction. ‘Come Down’ is one of the heaviest songs that we’ve done, it’s much more in the world of Alice in Chains. Dan, our drummer, comes from that world, and we didn’t try to stifle that, so the new music is a...

It’s the year 2045 in The Big Fucking City, that’s what the opening text says, and it’s time for everyone’s favourite show, Arena Wars, with your hosts Samson and Moses.
Well, Arena Wars used to be everybody’s favourite, a bloody spectacle that pits a team of death row inmates against a team of murderous psychopaths for a chance to earn their freedom. The problem is, it always ends the same way, with the well-armed and equipped psychos slaughtering the convicts. People are getting bored and the ratings are suffering, much to the dismay of Belladonna, the network’s CEO.

Mad Men is easily one of the greatest drama series of all time, crafting an insightful look at a volatile historical period that exposed society's economic, political, and ethical developments. Theres a reason that the 1960s were referred to as the decade of change, and Mad Men used the development of Don Draper (Jon Hamm) to show the radical shifts in American history, from the election of President John F. Kennedy in 1960 to the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. In addition to referencing key historical events, Mad Men often incorporated key cultural moments that defined American media. Mad Mens Season 6 episode The Flood even includes a scene where Don attends a screening of the original Planet of the Apes.

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. Can you believe we're four months into 2024? We can't either. At least a new month means new TV. The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels finds himself financially and morally bankrupt in the revenge dramedy A Man in Full. Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch returns to the small screen to play a puppeteer who loses his son and his sanity in Netflix's mysterious Eric. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are back for Season 3 of Hacks on Max. The Tattooist of Auschwitz adapts the bestselling novel inspired by a true World War II story. Shardlake has Sean Bean solving a Turdor-era murder mystery. Modern day podcast journalists tackle an Irish cold case in Bodkin, while BritBox's After the Flood layers climate change concerns with a small-town murder.

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Spoilers are ahead for Halo season 2, episode 7.
Dr. Halsey claims the Forerunner installation on Onyx is a library. Halsey's previous discovery of both Covenant and human DNA in the library seemingly proves her theory, as the Forerunners stored genetic material in their libraries. Forerunner libraries, like Onyx's, serve as genetic repositories to re-seed life after Halo array activation, hinting at The Flood's arrival.
Halo season 2, episode 7, "Thermopylae," reveals that the Forerunner installation on Onyx is a library — at least that's what Dr. Catherine Halsey (Natascha McElhone) claims. Previously, insurrectionist Kwan Ha (Yerin Ha) and Dr. Halsey peeled off from the larger group on Onyx, leaving Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) and Soren (Bokeem Woodbine) to pursue their own missions. While Soren and his wife, Laera (Fiona O'Shaughnessy), grapple with why the Unsc would take their son, Kessler (Tylan Bailey), the Chief infiltrates the Oni base on Onyx to find...

The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

There’s no better way to encapsulate David Beckham’s unbridled star power than the story of how Fisher Stevens ended up directing his Netflix docuseries “Beckham.”
“I got a call from Leo DiCaprio’s office,” recalls Stevens, who directed the DiCaprio-produced 2016 climate change film “The Flood.” “Leo and David were hanging out, and David [had] been looking for a director of his documentary — and Leo suggested me.”
The anecdote doesn’t end there. Stevens, a multi-hyphenate who won an Oscar for producing the 2009 dolphin documentary “The Cove,” and appeared on three seasons of HBO’s hit series “Succession” as Waystar Royco publicist Hugo, wasn’t sure he wanted to take on the job directing the Beckham project. “I didn’t really know much about him other than, you know, he was kind of a good-looking brand guy married to a Spice Girl,” he tells Variety.

Almost 20 years ago, the revival of Doctor Who almost began very differently, thanks to the most advanced version of the Cybermen. As it stands now, the Christopher Eccleston era of Doctor Who began with the Ninth Doctor, a product of the Time War having (at the time) presumably regenerated from the Eighth Doctor (before the intermediary War Doctor was introduced into franchise lore.)
The 2005 revamp almost began completely differently, starting with The Flood by Scott Gray, Gareth Roberts, Martin Geraghty, Roger Langridge, John Ross, Mike Collins, Anthony Williams, and Adrian Salmon. The story arc collects the final volume of Doctor Who Magazine comic strips starring the Eighth Doctor, published between July 2004 and February 2005, before the Ninth Doctor's televised debut. It features the future form of the Cybermen, which evolve into a completely inhuman cyborg body. It was also originally intended to kill off the Eighth Doctor in canon.
