DirecTV this week officially debuted their free, ad-supported streaming television platform with a curated portfolio of more than 70 content channels.

The service, called MyFree DirecTV, exists within the same app as DirecTV’s subscription streaming service, which is widely available on smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and other devices.

Digital media firm Little Dot Studios has acquired the rights to more than 230 hours of documentaries from Curiosity Stream, the companies announced this week.

The deal will see Little Dot Studios license the content for its YouTube channels — of which there are nearly five dozen — as well as its eight free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) content streams.

Fact-based streaming platform Curiosity Stream narrowed its operational loss to $4.7 million in 2023 and announced a future dividend program as it eyes positive free cash flow this year.

On Wednesday, Curiosity Stream said the company generated $56.9 million in revenue last year from the sale of its documentary-heaving streaming service and advertisements run against some linear content channels. The figure was about 27 percent lower compared to the $78 million earned in 2022.

For the quarter (Q4), Curiosity Stream took in $14.8 million in revenue, slightly higher than the $14.5 million earned during Q4 2022.

The company’s operating loss stood at $48.9 million for the year, down from $50.9 million in 2022, and $4.7 million during Q4 2023, a decrease of 67 percent on a year-over basis. The loss was attributed to lower expenses during the year, which clocked in at $16.2 million, down from $39.5 million in 2022.

Global production giant Fremantle has taken a majority stake in Singapore-based Beach House Pictures (Bhp), one of Asia’s top independent production outfits, whose slate includes the Emmy-nominated Netflix lifestyle series Mind Your Manners and science documentary series Evolve for Amazon Prime and Curiosity in the U.S. As part of the deal, Blue Ant Media has sold its stake in Bhp.

Financial details weren’t disclosed.

The deal, unveiled on Thursday, is the latest in Fremantle’s buying spree that has seen the group, a subsidiary of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, snatch up leading indies across the drama, film, and non-fiction space worldwide.

Beach House works across both film and TV, scripted and non-scripted genres and has a wide pan-Asian reach, including China and India. It is also pioneering brand-funded programming for regional and international platforms.

Washington, June 14 (Ians) NASA’s Curiosity rover has captured a “postcard” of lighting during morning and afternoon at the Martian surface, the space agency said. The postcard is an artistic interpretation of the landscape, with colour added over two black-and-white panoramas captured by Curiosity’s navigation cameras.

The views were taken on April 8 at 9.20 a.m. and 3.40 p.m. local Mars time, providing dramatically different lighting.

“Capturing two times of day provides dark shadows because the lighting is coming in from the left and the right, like you might have on a stage — but instead of stage lights, we’re relying on the Sun,” said Curiosity engineer Doug Ellison of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, who planned and processed the images, in a statement.

In Legacy, you play an inventor looking to grow an industrial empire. To do so, you must first create a product. This part of the game sees you combine various pre-set assets in order to invent a product. There doesn't seem to be much to this process in terms of ensuring that your product will reach a particular market. You can create a variety of items that range from simple to downright bizarre. Former Discovery Channel exec Howard Swartz is returning to the network as Senior Vice President of Production and Development. In addition, Jon Bardin has been promoted to Vice President of Documentaries and Specials at Discovery.

In his new role, Swartz will head production for upcoming event programming including the weeklong hit series Shark Week, which is about to begin its 30th anniversary run on July 22. In addition, he will have oversight over the network’s documentaries and specials and will expand, develop, and diversify Discovery’s series slate and acquisitions.

Swartz moves back to Discovery Channel from Arrow Media where he most recently served as Evp of Development and Production, based out of the company’s London office. Swartz will re-locate to Discovery’s Los Angeles office and report to Nancy Daniels, Chief Brand Officer, Discovery & Factual.

“We are thrilled to have Howard back on the Discovery team,” says Daniels.

This is a tough awards season! Lots of great movies to see, so little time! I'm catching up like crazy before we vote for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards for the Broadcast Film Critics Association. So I apologize if I haven't updated you with the latest on the awards season 2013-2014! And there were many award-giving bodies announcing nominations.

We already told you about the Rome Film Festival and the Film Independent Spirit Awards, now let's talk about the 2013 Gotham Awards, the Ida Documentary Awards, the Cinema Eye, and the Producers Guild announcing its best documentary choices.

First stop, we have the 2013 Gotham Awards where Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" topped the nominations with three nods including best feature, best actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor and breakthrough actor for Lupita Nyong'o.

This makes us miss Bear Grylls… Among the new shows Discovery will announce later today at its Upfront presentation to advertisers in New York are two survival series in which clothing is not included. Each episode of Naked and Afraid will strand a new pair of strangers in one of the world’s harshest environments with no food, no water, no tools, and no clothes. “As their extreme survival skills are put to the test for 21 days, each couple must battle the elements, each other, and their own inner weakness to triumph over the terrain and their predicament,” the press release promises.

Oz has reigned atop the box office for two weeks, but Fox’s family flick The Croods is ready to club the Disney tentpole out of the pole position this weekend.

Two other new releases, the White House thriller Olympus Has Fallen and the Tina Fey/Paul Rudd comedy Admission, should also make notable debuts, as will Harmony Korine’s “Disney Channel starlets gone bad” film Spring Breakers, which is expanding from three theaters to over 1,000 locations.

Korean pop sensation Gangnam Style was the top-trending search item, while Hurricane Sandy was the most searched news item.

Instead of having to premiere his newest single on Earth (the least rock n' roll of all the solar system's telluric planets), he teamed up with Nasa to release "Reach For The Stars" by blasting it over the speakers on the Mars Curiosity Rover.

Will.i.am's decision to debut his song in space wasn't an exercise in over-the-top rock star excess (well, it wasn't only an exercise in over-the-top rock star excess). It was also part of an effort by the musician to promote science education among America's youth.

The program, which will debut on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 10/9c, features will.i.am as he creates the single "Reach for the Stars," which became the first song to be broadcast back to Earth from the Mars landing of Nasa's Curiosity spacecraft.

Pasadena, Calif. — Will.i.am has premiered his new single – from Mars.

The Nasa rover Curiosity beamed to Earth his new song "Reach for the Stars" on Tuesday in the first music broadcast from another planet, to the delight of students who gathered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to listen.

The song had been uploaded to the rover, which landed near the equator of Mars, and played back – a journey of some 700 million miles.

The musician, who promotes science and mathematics education, was among more than a dozen celebrities who were invited to Jpl to watch Curiosity's landing earlier this month. Others included Wil Wheaton, Seth Green and Morgan Freeman.

In 2008, Nasa beamed the Beatles' "Across the Universe" into the cosmos to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the song.

Will.i.am premiered his new single from Mars with the help of former The Voice contestant Jaz Ellington, it has been revealed.

Jaz, who was coached by Will.i.am on the BBC singing contest last year, lent the vocals of his school choir to the track.
