Sarah Michelle Gellar has lined up her next TV role, and it's set in a story that book lovers may be familiar with. According to Deadline, the Cruel Intentions actress has been tapped to star in and executive produce Bad Summer People, a small-screen adaptation of Emma Rosenblum's bestselling debut novel, which has previously drawn comparisons to the critically acclaimed HBO show The White Lotus. That series, created by Mike White, has enjoyed significant success during past award seasons (including 12 nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards).
In the same way that The White Lotus focuses on a bunch of privileged people on a swanky vacation, Bad Summer People centers around a group of wealthy characters on holiday in the fictional haven of Salcombe, Fire Island – but things take a decidedly dark turn when a body is discovered off the side of the boardwalk, revealing a web of life-shattering secrets,...

Why Did Sarah Michelle Geller Mis Out On An Iconic Role Opposite Leonardo DiCaprio? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Before Titanic turned Leonardo DiCaprio into a global obsession, he nearly shared the screen with another ‘90s icon-in-the-making: Sarah Michelle Gellar. Yep, Buffy herself almost scored the part of Juliet in Baz Luhrmann’s wild, modern take on Romeo + Juliet. But as fate would have it, one glance sealed the deal for someone else.
Back in 1996, Gellar was still hustling for a film breakthrough. She’d already snagged a Daytime Emmy for her role as Kendall Hart on All My Children, but most of her credits lived on the small screen. Her big screen resume? Pretty slim. A minor role in High Stakes from 1989 and a few near misses, including Clueless.
But Romeo + Juliet? That was the one that stung. She auditioned for Juliet Capulet alongside a loaded list of future stars.

“The White Lotus” Season 3 is finally here. As is always the case with the HBO anthology series, though, it’s returned with a new cast of actors and characters for viewers to follow and either grow to love or revile. “The White Lotus” has also left its Hawaii and Italy hotels behind in favor of a new exotic setting: a wellness retreat in Thailand. Prepare for a lot of awkward social moments, barely hidden resentment, and, of course, some murder.
Here are all the characters you need to know in “The White Lotus” Season 3 as well as who play them.

Incest is one of the most controversial plots in any story, and in today’s movie landscape, it doesn’t seem too shocking to have it as part of the narrative—although it remains a taboo concept. Game of Thrones, for one, has the most popular incest story between Cersei and Jaime Lannister, although they weren’t the first pair to portray this on the screen.
In 1999, Reese Witherspoon starred in the romance thriller movie Cruel Intentions. It received an R rating for a reason—not only did it contain lots of s*xual innuendos and intimate scenes, but it also highlighted incest as a central plot.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey in Game of Thrones / Credits: HBO Cruel Intentions starring Reese Witherspoon was wilder than you remember
The risqué script of Cruel Intentions is absolutely difficult to ignore. It had all the ingredients of a story that would raise eyebrows and get frowned upon.

Joshua Jackson addressed one of Dawson's Creek's divisive storylines, siding with fans who called out Pacey Witter's latter arc. He wants to retcon "stockbroker Pacey", which doesn't make sense to him looking back.
Looking back on his run in Dawson's Creek, Joshua Jackson revealed one arc his character could do without. "I don't think Pacey ever needed to be a stockbroker," he told People. "I don't really think we needed to go there." Jackson was referring to Pacey Witter's Season 6 storyline, where Audrey's father set him up for a stockbroker job in Boston. Audrey eventually broke up with Pacey because she disapproved of his new lifestyle. Fans were surprised by the turn, which also had Pacey sporting a goatee and new haircut. Jackson regretted doing that. "I don't think we needed a goatee. Maybe that's it: it's goatee Pacey," he quipped. "It doesn't work for me."

On March 10, 1997, spunky teenager Buffy quit her high school cheer squad to fulfill her destiny of slaying vampires and demons (while accidentally falling in love with one particularly handsome immortal)—and the world was never the same. Joss Whedon's wildly popular television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer not only ran for seven seasons but launched successful careers for nearly all of its regular cast members.
Its spin-off series Angel garnered a large viewership and starred Buffy the Vampire Slayer's David Boreanaz. But, Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar would eventually secure lead roles in even more noteworthy television shows and movies, along with fellow show actors Alyson Hannigan, Seth Green, James Marsters, Michelle Trachtenberg, Anthony Head, Nicholas Brendon and many others. Two decades ago, Nielsen overnight ratings were king, providing a comprehensive and succinct look at the biggest moments on TV, which, at the time, only existed on linear networks. Now, with streaming making viewing more fragmented than ever, linear ratings just don’t have the same weight as they used to. Nielsen and Netflix have embraced weekly top 10 streaming charts along with a bi-annual Netflix data dump to give a fuller picture of the streaming landscape, while other streamers mostly keep their numbers to themselves.

Joshua Jackson was 15 years old when he first appeared in The Mighty Ducks film series. The actor recently recalled how co-star Emilio Estevez's advice helped him appreciate success as a celebrity.
Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jackson said he was still "just a child" in 1992's The Mighty Ducks, one of that decade's feel-good sports comedies. The cinematic medium has seen countless romance films, ranging from classics like Titanic to contemporary hits such as Moonlight. However, as beloved as the romance genre is, its darkest stories often go underappreciated. Whether they take place in a dark fantasy world with gothic creatures, possess elements of the thriller and horror genres, or explore the sinister side of love, these films are known to push the boundaries of romance.
Despite being very different, movies like Cruel Intentions and Jane Eyre share the premise of trust and mistrust in a relationship. They both have complex characters who give in to a forbidden love. Meanwhile, fantasy movies Only Lovers Left Alive and Let The Right OneIn dive into what love looks like for vampires with two distinct narratives. The best dark romance movies can showcase the beautiful and the terrifying, adding much-needed nuance to one of film's most popular genres.

At this point, it's safe to say that the "Cruel Intentions" franchise has experienced more downs than ups. The original 1999 movie, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as a pair of spoiled, incestuous step-siblings, is a bona fide cult classic that scored big at the box office, but the same can't be said about the direct-to-video sequels, which are largely forgotten these days. Unfortunately, the story hasn't found success as a streaming show either, with Variety reporting that the Prime Video series is no more. Back in November 2024, Prime Video tried its hand at remaking a classic cult film, Cruel Intentions. The 1999 movie stars Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe. The streamer decided to restart the franchise off with an 8-episode television series. Though its the end of the road for the show, clearly not hitting with audiences like its predecessors.
According to TVLine, Cruel Intentions on Prime Video has been cancelled after just one season. There was no reason given as to why the streaming service decided to go in this route. The company usually doesn't release viewership numbers like other streamer and networks do, and it doesn't have a Top 10 feature to help us gauge how many people were watching.
Though honestly if you just head to Rotten Tomatoes to see what viewers thought in general or look at what critics have written, this move really isn't a surprise. Not to sound cruel,...

There’s so much great TV out there, and most isn’t derived from legacy franchises.
Prime Video didn’t seem to get the memo because it continues to bring these excellent properties back to screens without the thrill of their predecessor.
The latest effort, Cruel Intentions, based on the hit movie of the same name, premiered in November 2024 and was pretty much ignored.
(Prime Video/Screenshot)
The 2024 version of Cruel Intentions was a below-average teen drama at best, playing out more like Max’s canceled Gossip Girl reboot, which had some redeeming qualities at the very least.
The 1999 Cruel Intentions had a compelling plot and a cast that included Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair.

As the lame follow-up movies can attest, you can’t reinvent the wheel without the cast that made it such a success in the first place.

The power plays come to an early end as Prime Video cancels their television adaptation of 1999 teen drama Cruel Intentions after one season. Cruel Intentions will not return for a second season. The 2024 followup to the 1999 movie of the same name released its first (and now, only) installment last November.
The show endured a long road to release, starting first at Freevee in 2021 before moving to Prime Video in 2023. Before that, NBC had ordered and cancelled a different pilot inspired by the movie in 2016, and an attempted prequel series from Fox also never made it to air.
Amazon’s series starred Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas and Brooke Lena Johnson. Neal H. Moritz and Roger Kumble who produced (the former) and wrote and directed (the latter) the original film, also served as executive producers.

Image Source: Amazon Cruel Intentions is one of those rare Hollywood gems that managed to be both a box office hit and a cult classic. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon the film has stayed a fan favorite for decades. Set in a New York prep school, the story—full of manipulation and seduction—takes its inspiration from the 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. When we spoke to Reese Witherspoon around the time of the film’s release, she admitted the high school setting was nothing like her own teenage years. Luckily, director Roger Kumble, who drew from his personal experiences, helped her understand the privileged and cutthroat world the movie portrays. Cruel Intentions will not be back for a second season. Prime Video has canceled the series after its freshman run, sources confirm to Deadline.

Amazon has dealt a cruel blow to fans of the teen drama remake of Cruel Intentions by shelving the series after a single season. Fans of the 1999 movie had been quite on board with this new take on the story, although critics panned it as another unnecessary rehash of a popular franchise that failed to capture anything that made the movie a cult classic.
According to Variety, Cruel Intentions, which took more than three years to make it from its original pitch to screens on Prime Video in November 2024, failed to land a place in the streaming Top 10 during its run, which is probably the biggest reason for its cancelation, but no doubt the dismal 24% from critics didn’t help its cause.

Amazon won't be moving forward with a second season of Cruel Intentions, the new TV series that served as a reboot of the 1999 film of the same name. The news comes four months after the show's debut on Prime Video in 2024.
Per Variety, Cruel Intentions has been canceled at Prime Video after one season. It's an unfortunate end for the series, which had to overcome some major hurdles in development to finally get made. The Cruel Intentions reboot was first announced in 2021 for IMDb TV/Amazon Freevee in 2021, though it was not officially ordered to series on Prime Video until late 2023.
Upon release, the reboot proved to be polarizing, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 24% with a much-higher audience score of 81%. The audience score was strong, but that alone may not have been enough to save the series. Exact viewership numbers are not known for the Cruel Intentions reboot,...

“Cruel Intentions” will not be returning to Prime Video.
Prime Video has opted not to renew “Cruel Intentions” for a second season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. The news comes just under four months after “Cruel Intentions” first launched on Prime Video in November.
The series, which was led by “The White Lotus” star Sarah Catherine Hook, reimagined the 1999 cult classic film of the same name as well as 1988’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” except this time the tale took place in collegiate Greek life.
Hook starred as Caroline Merteuil, who made a deal with her step-brother, Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), for Lucien to seduce naive newcomer and daughter of the VP, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), in order to sway her to join Caroline’s sorority as a way to shield her chapter from an ongoing hazing scandal. If Lucien was successful, Caroline promised him that she would give him what he really wanted: her.

The only way to make any money in Hollywood today is to luck into a franchise you can run into the ground, but when you have to keep the same story going in perpetuity, it’s easy to write yourself into a corner. Sometimes, you have to take a few steps back to tell the story you want to tell. Sometimes, you have to step back until you body slam enough audience members that they’ve completely forgotten everything that’s come before.

Chris Evans is one of the most charming actors of his generation. He can seemingly do it all, from cult action like Snowpiercer to starring as a scene-stealing supporting cast member in movies like Knives Out and The Gray Man. These films are excellent and have their own dedicated fan bases, but without a doubt, Evans is best known for starring as Captain America in nine MCU movies to date.

According to third-party analytics, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has broken a fantastic milestone - becoming the number one TV show on Disney+ worldwide. 2024 was a rough year for Star Wars, with The Acolyte - intended to serve as a spectacular relaunch for the franchise - instead leaving the fandom divided. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew failed to hit the streaming top 10 in the U.S., leading to some concern the show won't get the renewal it deserves.
The latest third-party analytics from Flix Patrol reveal the show is improving in terms of performance, though. Skeleton Crew is ranked the number 1 Disney+ TV show or movie worldwide for January 2 - and the viewership trend is exciting, because it ranks higher than movies like Deadpool & Wolverine. Even more pleasing, though, is the viewership trend over the last week - as seen on Flix Patrol's metrics.

Looking back, Prime Video had some great releases this year including The Boys season 4, My Lady Jane, and two series' in the Citadel franchise. These were definitely impressive! However, unfortunately there's also some shows that just didn't meet our expectations. And a couple of these were big releases where we were expecting more. Here's 3 most disappointing Prime Video shows from 2024.

There's nothing worse for TV fans getting invested in a new series only to be disappointed by an early cancelation. While some shows get canceled after one or two seasons, there are actually several instances in Hollywood in which shows get canceled before even premiering. This was especially common in the pre-streaming era, where network TV had to produce pilots that were to be approved by the studio heads before being given a full series green light.
There are several reasons why some shows never make it past their pilot, whether it's the plot, characters, casting, budget, or just not working enough to justify the cost of a full season. Often, these failed shows never release their pilots publicly, meaning many of these series became defined as "lost media." While some of these shows were reworked into other series, many never made it broadcast.

Countless beloved movies and TV shows have been revived in recent years, and now Buffy the Vampire Slayer could finally join those ranks due to some recent actor news. Initially released in 1997, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a paranormal drama following Buffy Summers, a teenage girl who is also known as the Slayer, a mythical figure who is destined to protect the world from vampires and other supernatural creatures. With the help of her best friends and her school's librarian, Buffy fulfills her duty, while also dealing with the typical problems of high schoolers.
There is no doubt that recent years have seen a spike in remakes, spinoffs, and revivals. Some of these have proven themselves to be successful, reigniting the love for older franchises. Of course, others have been less successful. Yet, these types of projects keep cropping up and making audiences yearn for their personal favorite series to make a return.
