“O’Dessa” (2025) is another musical film by Geremy Jasper, who previously wrote and directed “Patti Cake$.” This 2017 film was about a rapper with high ambitions, who hoped to leave her sorrows behind to find success in the world of music. That is particularly difficult for someone from her socio-economic background. Most of Patti Cake$’s themes appear in “O’Dessa,” which also follows a young girl leaving her home in pursuit of success. However, the approach is unmistakably different. Jasper’s former film used a rather naturalistic tone of narration while his latest is dynamic, vibrant, and is set in a neon-soaked post-apocalyptic world.
Jasper’s film uses its futuristic setting in contrast to its gritty working-class neighborhoods. It heightens the dreadful darkness in their lives. In this world, even the neon lights feel piercing and harsh. However, at times, they have a glisteningly soft and tender effect, akin to Jane Schoenbrun...

Had anyone told me I’d see Sadie Sink play an androgynous punk rocker who strums her guitar to try and save the world, I’d have said no way. This is not to say that I can’t imagine Sadie playing unique characters, because she’s one of the brightest young stars we have today. However, it just seems bizarre that such a movie would come out at all. O’Dessa tells the story of the titular character, who finds herself orphaned and alone on her barren farm after her mom passes away from sickness. In a land where plasma makes the grass purple and the water is dirt brown, O’Dessa must fulfill a prophecy, one about “the seventh son.” Yes, she is the seventh son, and that’s just the facts; nothing odd about it.
What’s special about O’Dessa is how it takes a truly...

The year 2024 was a significant one for horror movies, highlighted by a successful awards season and dominance by the genre at the box office. Notably, the Oscars recognized four films within the genre, signaling a growing appreciation for horror’s artistic merit.
The Academy Awards have historically marginalized horror films, with The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 a notable exception. Its “Big Five” sweep — Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay — remains a unique achievement. However, the recent nominations of films like The Substance and Nosferatu indicate a growing willingness to acknowledge the genre, signaling a potential change in the awards landscape.
The ‘Silence of the Lambs’ cast and production winners hold their Oscars at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The film won five Oscars.
Horror at the Academy Awards was first recognized in 1974, when William Friedkin’s groundbreaking The Exorcist received a remarkable 10 nominations including Best Picture. While it won just two awards,...

Currently the UK’s largest queer film event, Flare is also one of the world’s longest-running queer film festivals. It turns 40 next year. The BFI is already planning a series of celebrations to mark the milestone. It’s a well-known fact that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences don’t tend to favour genre films when it comes to shortlisting for their tentpole awards ceremony. It’s simply not their bag and that goes that double for anything that happens to fall into the disreputable slum of horror. Indeed — bar a few outliers like Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist or Get Out — scary movies rarely get a fair shake come Oscar season. Certainly not when compared to, say, glitzy biopics or period pieces that have a more prestigious air about them.
Yet, against all odds, the genre has done quite well for itself this year. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is dominating the technical categories, The Substance has found itself as an unlikely contender for four of the “Big Five” awards, and even Alien: Romulus has gotten a look in for its VFX work.

The 23rd edition of the Golden Schmoes voting period ended at midnight, and now we’ve got a full list of all of the winners chosen by our readers! The longest-running, fan-voted awards on the internet, the winners are always very interesting in that they reveal, in surprising ways, both the divide between fans and traditional voting bodies (like the Academy) and their similarities at times. This year, we didn’t have any record-breakers in terms of the most awarded films, with Deadpool & Wolverine earning 7 nods, while The Substance earned 5, and Dune: Part Two earned 4. The all-time champ for the most wins ever for The Golden Schmoes is still The Dark Knight, with 12 wins.
Both Dune: Part Two and The Substance are Academy favourites this year, while Deadpool & Wolverine was mostly overlooked. However, one movie that’s beloved by the Academy, Emilia Perez, was seemingly hated by our voters,...

On February 26, news broke that Michelle Trachtenberg, an actress who got her start as a child star in the 1990s, passed away at the age of 39. This is a gutting loss on so many levels; not only was Trachtenberg far too young, but she was a stunningly talented performer who pretty much always made a project better simply by showing up. For millennials in particular — who basically grew up with Trachtenberg's body of work — this is a gutting loss, and it's also a major loss for the entertainment industry as a whole. In fact, two millennial writers for /Film who did, in fact, grow up with Trachtenberg's body of work are helming this article, so rest easy.
Trachtenberg had 62 acting credits to her name when she passed, and if you think of her performances on both the big and small screen, a few specific ones will probably come to mind,...

The independent-focused Los Angeles Festival of Movies is preparing for its second edition, unveiling its coming line-up for April 3 to 6. The fest, co-presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, will kick-off with an opening night screening of Amalia Ulman’s south-of-the-border satire “Magic Farm,” starring Chloë Sevigny, Simon Rex and Alex Wolff as an inept documentary crew that ends up in the wrong country after embarking to profile an Argentinian musician. The feature premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January; this Lafm selection will mark its West Coast premiere.
The fest also features a screening of “Friendship,” the A24 comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. Neo Sora’s Gen-z apocalypse ensemble drama “Happyend” will play as the closing night selection.
Other feature inclusions are the world premiere of Dennis Cooper and Zac Farley’s “Room Temperature,” about an annual family-operated haunted house that dramatically ups the stakes; the U.S.

Visually stunning, nostalgic, heartfelt, and full of emotional depth, Jane Schoenbrun’s latest feature-length production, I Saw the TV Glow, is a cinematic masterpiece. Starring Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu) and Jack Haven (Atypical), the throwback film centers around two teenagers in 1996 who find common ground through a shared obsession for a TV show titled, The Pink Opaque. Throughout the film, the pair call their identities into question, with much of the title acting as a parallel for the experience of coming out as trans. Featuring plenty of callbacks to shows of yesteryear like Buffy the Vampire Slayerand Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the horror film isn’t easily comparable to other entries in the genre, more so using the overlying mystery behind its two main characters as the horror aspect.

Arriving on a busy blue carpet for a gray day at the beach, guests at the 2025 Indie Spirit Awards agreed: It’s time to Make the Movies Messy Again.
Inside the ceremony tent, host Aidy Bryant put it perfectly when she said, “It’s been a great year for film and a bad year for human life.” Hundreds of the most important decision-makers and visionary artists championing creative independence today gathered in Santa Monica, California on Saturday to honor the best in boundary-breaking film and TV.
“Anora” and “Baby Reindeer” won the most categories in several tight races, but the show’s main source of dramatic tension came from the countless news items surrounding a tough awards season. From fraught talk of cultural fascism to economic critiques of the entertainment industry, honorees and their peers predicted an uncertain but fiery future for filmmakers, cast, and crew. When asked about how the Trump administration’s attacks on queer rights may affect their films going forward, “I Saw the TV Glow” director Jane Schoenbrun recognized the major political implications of the current moment, but says there are higher priorities than “trying to react.”
“Hopefully [my directing] won’t change much,” Schoenbrun told Variety‘s Marc Malkin at the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet Sunday in Santa Monica, Calif. “Hopefully as an artist, you’re reading the vibe around you and you’re filtering that into what you make. But also, whether you’re an artist or not, queer people just need to be living and loving and being themselves. That’s probably the more important thing than trying to react.”

The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards revealed its 2025 winners Sunday night (Feb. 23). The 15th annual ceremony was held at The Wiltern in L.A.’s Koreatown and honors the year’s best work in songs and scores for screen.
Sunday’s ceremony began with a video about January’s deadly wildfires, in which guild president Lindsay Wolfington lost her home. She thanked the community for rallying behind her during opening remarks with vp Heather Guibert.
The opening remarks didn’t shy away from addressing the Academy’s decision to “move away” from best original song live performances at the 2025 Oscars. “We are proud that our awards for best song written and or recorded for film and for television, acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the songwriters, the performers, and of course the music,” Guibert told the crowd.

Trans life has always been under attack, but — with the Trump Administration actively stripping this community’s rights away on a daily basis — perhaps never more so than right now. It’s why an indie film like “I Saw the TV Glow” has proven such a cultural touchstone. By using the horror genre to expose the joy and turmoil of being queer, the film has connected with audiences who feel ignored and trapped by the circumstances society has put upon them.
Speaking to IndieWire’s Alison Foreman on the blue carpet at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards, “I Saw the TV Glow” star Jack Haven shared how, in creating an honest reflection of queerness, the film has pushed others to accept themselves as they are rather than face the horror of embracing a falsehood.

Jesse Eisenberg is giving a special shout-out to Emma Stone.
The 41-year-old A Real Pain writer and director won Best Screenplay at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 22), and he spoke about his Zombieland co-star, who was a producer on the film.
“I met Emma when we were in Zombieland together 2009 and since then — I write little magazine articles and little things on McSweeney’s, and she’s the only person, I’m including my mom here, who would take little screenshots of it over the last 15 years and send me things like, ‘This is such a funny line!’” he said.

“She was, definitely still [is], the most famous person I know, and yet also the most dedicated to encouraging me as a writer. I think about her not as my producer, but like a fairy godmother, that I am riding the coattails of her goodwill.

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring all of the indie films which deserve honor and recognition - celebrating their 40th year. The 2025 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Saturday evening, in their usual spot in Santa Monica near the beach - one week before the Oscars. The big winner this year is the already celebrated Anora, taking Best Film & Best Director & Best Lead Performance. Sean Baker also recently won the DGA Award for Best Director as well. The other nominations from 2024 included many outstanding indie films many cinephiles have been raving about for years, deserving of some extra time in the spotlight - including Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, I Saw the TV Glow, Cuckoo, Thelma, The Brutalist, Ghostlight, and Didi (which also won a few awards). As usual, a few surprises: I've never heard of Big Boys (a coming-of-age...

Though its timing has changed over the years, the Film Independent Spirit Awards still marks the final turn toward the finish line of awards season, putting a spotlight on both the films that are major Oscar contenders, as well as the projects that prove great cinema can be made at the most micro of budgets.
While the show was expansive in terms of what it honored, including the best of television as well, there was a certain throughline in what was recognized at the Independent Spirit Awards this year. Below, IndieWire dives into the true winners of the 2025 Indie Spirits.

When Sean Baker (Anora) won best director at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, he took the opportunity to reflect on the current state of independent film and said the industry needed to change to keep that genre of films alive.
“Indie film is struggling right now, more than ever,” Baker told the audience in a lengthy speech. “Gone are the days of DVD sales that allow for greater risk to be taken on challenging films. That revenue stream is gone, and the only way to see significant back-end is to have a box office hit with profits that far exceed what any of our films will ever see, unless you are Damien Leone and strike gold with a franchise like Terrifier. But as we all know, that’s an extreme rarity for me, and I think for many of my peers. If we’re lucky, the average number...

Anora continued its February roll through awards season, dominating the 40th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday with wins for Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Lead Performance for star Mikey Madison.
In winning for top feature, Anora beat out fellow Oscar Best Picture nominees Nickel Boys and The Substance along with Sing Sing and I Saw the TV Glow. Baker prevailed in the director race over another Academy Award nominee, onetime favorite Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, as well as Ali Abbasi (The Apprentice), Alonso Ruizpalacios (La Cocina), and Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow). And Madison, on the heels of her BAFTA win last week, knocked off her chief Best Actress competition at the Oscars, Demi Moore — setting the stage for a SAG Awards showdown Sunday night.

Kieran Culkin took home the win for best supporting performance at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Presented by Kathryn Hahn, Culkin won the honor for his work in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, marking his first Spirit Award ever. Culkin — who is starring in Glengarry Glen Ross, which opens March 10 on Broadway — was not present at the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, but Hahn accepted the award on his behalf.
His win at the 2025 Spirit Awards came a little over a month after he won the award for best supporting actor at the 2025 Golden Globes. Culkin, too, became a first-time Oscar nominee this year with a nod in the same category for his portrayal of Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain.

When Jesse Eisenberg won the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay for “A Real Pain,” he devoted part of his acceptance speech to thanking executive producer Emma Stone. He praised Stone — who also served as a producer on Spirit-nominated films “I Saw the TV Glow,” “Problemista,” and “Fantasmas” — for using her A-list status to help bold independent films get made, calling her a “fairy godmother” who continues to help guide her career.
Addressing members of the press in the winners room, Eisenberg was asked about the possibility of writing a role for Stone, who he has known since they co-starred in “Zombieland” in 2009. The hyphenate admitted that he loved the idea, but playfully cast doubt on the notion that Stone would ever be able to fit one of his movies into her busy acting schedule.
“Every single person in the world who opens a Final Draft folder wants to write something for Emma Stone.

During his acceptance speech for best screenplay at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards, A Real Pain writer and director Jesse Eisenberg called Emma Stone, a producer on the film, his “fairy godmother.”
“I met Emma when we were in Zombieland together 2009 and since then — I write little magazine articles and little things on McSweeney’s, and she’s the only person, I’m including my mom here, who would take little screenshots of it over the last 15 years and send me things like, ‘This is such a funny line!'” Eisenberg said onstage, while Stone was in the audience. “She was, definitely still [is], the most famous person I know, and yet also the most dedicated to encouraging me as a writer. Former Saturday Night Live castmember Aidy Bryant opened her monologue at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday by reflecting on an intimate moment between her and Kieran Culkin years ago.
Culkin hosted the sketch comedy series in 2021, and she kissed him during a sketch (which didn’t air).
“Kieran and I actually worked together when he hosted SNL, and we did a sketch and in it, we had to kiss — in a comedic way. And after dress rehearsal, Kieran said to my co-writer, ‘Wow, Aidy really went for it with that kiss,'” the Spirit Awards’ host recalled.
Bryant continued, “That actually got back to me, and then the sketch was cut and it never made it to air. And it just became a thing that I did that I have to live with.”
The comedian then said she wanted to “clear the air” and apologize for being so forward...

“Anora” won Best Feature at the the 40th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica and was hosted for the second year in a row by Aidy Bryant. “Anora’s” Indie Spirit win follows its recent triumphs at the DGA and PGA awards and boosts its chances for Oscar glory next week. “Anora” also won Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. Repeating her victory at the BAFTAs, Madison beat Demi Moore, who had been considered the solid frontrunner.
In many ways, the Indie Spirit Awards followed a pattern it has shown in recent years: Anytime its voters can give a statuette to an Oscar-nominated film or performance, they do. This year’s Spirit nominations included Oscar nominees in seven different categories — and in every one of those categories, the Academy-approved entry won.

Before the Oscars light up Hollywood, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is bringing everyone down to the beach. Its annual celebration has been hosted at the Santa Monica Pier for many years, but 2025’s festivities there hold particular reverence, as just a little over a month ago, the area around this setting was ablaze from wildfires.
As serious as this tragedy was, the Spirit Awards, with “SNL” alumna and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant back as host, are sure to bring some much-needed levity to a city and community devastated by these recent natural disasters. People love horror movies. As much as they fail to accept it when a discussion about cinema’s horrific impact comes up, one can’t think about movies without the horror genre involved in some way. If cinema is like a stimulus, horror movies must be the greatest catalyst to get a reaction out of a viewer. Are you looking for a good old-fashioned scare-fest while sitting on your couch? The streaming service has a stacked-up catalog of horror movies from all possible eras. The following list mostly looks at those Horror Movies on HBO Max that, in some way, defined the genre. But even beyond the scope of this list and the flavors explored here, lie many contemporary faces of horror on the streamer. From the slow-burning existential tension of I Saw the TV Glow and The Lighthouse...

As we gear up for the big afternoon on the beach this Saturday, now’s a great time to get to know your nominees. Hopefully you’ve seen their films, and if you’re a Film Independent member, watched your screeners and voted too. But there’s nothing quite like hearing about the process from the creative minds themselves.
That’s exactly what we did with this year’s Directors Close-Up, where we brought together the nominees from some of the top filmmaking categories, to talk shop. Over two weeks this February, we held Zoom sessions for our members, where these creators tell how exactly they got their projects off the ground, the creative choices they made, and what inspires them.
If you missed them live, we’ve got you covered. Let’s take a look at all the action from this year’s Directors Close-Up:
