Hit BBC drama Vigil will look to the skies for its second series, with a brand-new investigation that takes Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) into the world of the British air force. The six-part drama, made by World Productions (Line of Duty, Showtrial, Save Me, Bodyguard) for BBC One and iPlayer, will begin filming soon in Scotland. Following multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish military facility, Silva and Longacre are tasked with uncovering the cause. Entering the hostile and closed ranks of the air force, the pair must face the deadly warfare of tomorrow as they fight for their own future. Exclusive: Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie are headed to the skies for the second season of BBC ratings hit Vigil, while Dougray Scott and Romola Garai are among nine new cast members joining them.

As expected, Jones and Leslie will return as detectives Amy Silva and Kirsten Longacre. Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials) also returns as DS Robertson.

In Season 2, Deadline has learnt that the leads will enter the closed and hostile environment of the Royal Air Force as they’re tasked with uncovering the cause of multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish military base.

The first thing you’ll notice about Limbo is how filmmaker Ivan Sen uses black and white to create a unique version of the Australian outback that’s almost hypnotic. Once your eyes adjust to the beauty of these visuals, the second thing you might notice is how Simon Baker (The Mentalist) is unrecognizable as Travis Hurley, a police officer investigating a cold case that reveals much about racial conflicts in Australia. Unfortunately, as much as these two elements keep drawing us back into Limbo, they can’t redeem the crime of a dull script.

Celine Song’s feature debut Past Lives has finished top of Screen’s 2023 Berlin jury grid after the final five titles failed to match its average score of 3.6 from seven critics.

The romantic drama has the highest score of a Berlin jury grid winner since 2017’s The Other Side Of Hope by Aki Kaurismaki, which scored 3.7.

How long Cobb and Mal were in Limbo remains unclear to many who've seen Inception, which is just one of the movie's biggest mysteries. Indeed, the mind-bending Christopher Nolan movie raises a lot of questions about the nature of time and space, but one of the biggest is about how many hours pass in reality as opposed to in a dream. As Cobb explains to Ariadne, time stretches in a dream; seconds turn to minutes, minutes turn to days, and days turn to years.

The length in which time stretches for a dreamer depends on where they are in Inception's dream levels. Typically, a dreamer's perception of time lengthens exponentially the deeper they are inside a shared dream. This effect happens from the first until the last level of dreaming, Limbo, the shores of the subconscious - where Cobb and Mal grew old together before the events of the movie.

There’s a parched austerity to the landscape of the Australian outback, along with an embedded history of conflict between Indigenous and invading occupants, that makes it irresistibly well-suited to screen westerns. But there’s a loneliness to it, too, a sense that its quiet vastness could swallow you whole and without trace, that lends itself as easily to moody, smoky mystery.

Aboriginal filmmaker Ivan Sen has twice before dabbled in the harsh, dry space where those genre possibilities overlap, in his features “Goldstone” and “Mystery Road.” In his latest, most accomplished film “Limbo,” he once more surveys the region with a critical eye, finding a history of racial injustice in its sharp cracks and long shadows. But the genre styling this time has been pushed all the way to stark, monochromatic stylization. This is outback noir — oblique, secretive and as hard-boiled as the ground is hard-baked — and Sen wears it well.

Odd people turn up in deserts. People are also inclined to disappear. A strange moonscape of opal prospectors’ digs and slurry heaps helps to set a bleak mood in Australian filmmaker Ivan Sen’s Limbo, shot in gently faded black and white in the South Australian mining town of Coober Pedy, repurposed here as Limbo. Limbo, says the preacher whose radio show seems to be the only thing available on the local airwaves, is the edge of hell. Here, unpurged sinners may be “in friendship with God.” Damnation, however, isn’t far away.

Visiting detective Travis (Simon Baker) doesn’t seem to be in friendship with anyone. Baker, an Australian actor familiar as a suave presence in The Mentalist and other U.S. series, carries himself here as if he had spent his entire life facing a dusty headwind; he sinks into the role to become unrecognizable. Christian Petzold’s Afire has landed second on Screen’s 2023 Berlin jury grid with a strong 3.4 average.

The German drama received a mix of four-star and three-star ratings from the critics and is just behind Celine Song’s Past Lives which remains leader of the pack on 3.6.

Petzold’s fifth entry at Berlinale’s competition follows a group of friends holidaying by the Baltic Sea.

Next in line for the new titles is Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s 20,000 Species Of Bees which received a 2.6 average from critics.

Buenos Aires-based production outfit Mil Monos is teaming with writer-director Pablo Agüero and writer-creator Nicolás Britos to develop dystopian coming-of-age thriller series project “Decibel.”

Produced by Mil Monos’ Maximiliano Monzón, “Decibel” is currently at pilot script stage, and a shoot start is planned by January 2024, tentatively in Argentina.

Written by Britos, the eight-episode, half-hour thriller follows five deaf teenagers born in a mountainous region. When The Hum, a sound that transforms every person who can hear it into a frenzied killer, is unleashed, their deafness makes them immune.

The five teens must choose between stopping the apocalypse to save the planet or letting the world perish in order to start over from scratch.

“Decibel” is one of the ten projects selected for the 9th edition of Co-Pro Series pitches at the Berlinale Series Market, running Feb. 20-22.
