Even if you're not a big fan of the heroes in a half-shell, odds are, you're at least vaguely familiar with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Though the superheroes had relatively humble origins in a black and white comic book published in 1984, it wasn't long before Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, along with their rat father figure Master Splinter, became pop culture icons.
Co-created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Ninja Turtles gained true fame beginning with their legendary '80s animated series, before the 1990 live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie took things to new heights. Yet, back when it was still primarily the comics driving the characters forward, Eastman and Laird crafted a story that would eventually go on to become one of the most beloved stories in the history of this franchise, regardless of the medium. A live-action adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible was announced four years before the animated series even premiered on Prime Video, and still, there’s been little movement on the movie. Is it even still happening? According to Kirkman, apparently so. They’re just taking their time with it.
“It’s still in development,” Kirkman said at San Diego Comic-Con (via The Direct). “We’re still working with Universal. You know, the show is going so well. I think the movie absolutely has to be perfect. And so it’s taking a lot of time, like getting the pieces aligned and getting everything to work so that we can come out and make it as good as it can possibly be. So it’s been in development for a long time, and it’s probably going to be in development for a while longer.“

The Last Ronin adaptation plans may include a role for Hoag, drawing on her iconic portrayal of April O'Neil to enhance the project. Hoag's potential involvement in other Ninja Turtles projects reflects the impact of her original portrayal on fans, generating excitement for the future.
According to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Tom Waltz, it would be a major "Cowabunga moment" for fans of the franchise to have the actress who portrayed April O'Neil in the 1990 live-action movie involved in the adaptation of The Last Ronin. Tom Waltz and Kevin Eastman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin has opened up a rich narrative world that still has untold stories to reveal, something that Waltz suggested he's well-aware of in an interview with Screen Rant. Waltz hints at more Roninverse tales to come, suggesting that there are more stories to come "beyond" the current sequel to the groundbreaking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles alternate continuity miniseries. The Roninverse has the potential to expand in many different ways: sequels, prequels, side stories, and deeper dives into the psychological journies of its growing cast of characters.
Legendary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Tom Waltz spoke to Screen Rant about the future of the "Roninverse," suggesting that there are more stories to tell in the franchise's gamechanging alternate continuity. The key to the enduring success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lies in staying true to the original vision of creators Eastman and Laird. Tmnt writer Tom Waltz emphasizes the importance of preserving the core concepts of the series, never compromising on authenticity. Balancing evolution with tradition, the Turtles have remained entertaining by staying true to their original characters and storylines.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been one of the most enduring books in indie comics since its creation in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. This is largely thanks to the style and tone set by its creators, whose vision has been carried over into various forms of media for the heroes.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have retained an impressive degree of relevance and popularity throughout the 40 years since their creation. This is thanks to how the characters have been penned by creators who respect the original series.

Tmnt: The Last Ronin reached new heights in 2020 as an homage to Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, surprising even the writers with its success. Tom Waltz, a key writer on the Tmnt series, was shocked by The Last Ronin's popularity, selling out and prompting a second printing. The Last Ronin II continues the dark cyberpunk-meets-Old Man Logan makeover, expanding on the successful and profitable venture of the original series.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' names are an homage to Renaissance artists, imbuing them with unique depth and personality. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael embody traits of their namesakes, adding educational layers to their characters. Tmnt originally considered Japanese names before opting for the names of famous painters, connecting them to historical creativity.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are more than just a pop culture phenomenon; they are a staple of many childhoods, and the Ninja Turtles' names were likely kids' first introduction to Renaissance painters. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984, the concept started as a humorous comic book that parodied the prevailing themes of mainstream comics. The Tmnt franchise quickly expanded into a TV series, films, toys, and video games, reaching an iconic status. The story revolves around four mutant turtles; Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, who are trained in the art of ninjutsu by their rat sensei.

The 40-year-old, kid-friendly franchise Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is returning to movie theaters in live action, in a project that Paramount Pictures is targeting instead for adults.
The studio is developing the bloody and intense graphic novel series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” with screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith (“Boy Kills World”) and Walter Hamada’s 18hz production company through his multi-year deal. The 2020-2022 miniseries — written by original “Turtles” creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, with Eastman and Tom Waltz developing the script — is set in a bleak, dystopian future in which Oroku Hiroto, the grandson of the Turtles’ arch-nemesis, Shredder, rules New York City as a totalitarian despot. Hiroto has killed all but one of the Turtles, as well as their mentor, Splinter; the remaining Turtle seeks revenge by wielding all four of their signature weapons.
