10 TV Tropes That Need To Stop
Image
Television and films all share one thing in common: they all rely on tropes that have existed for years, decades, and even centuries. There are popular tropes that everyone loves, including but not limited to The Final Girl, The Cavalry, and The Animal Companion, among many others. TV tropes are what makes television and film interesting; it is the anticipation of how certain tropes will play out or how writers might put a spin on their series.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: What the 2003 Remake Got Right
Image
Today, horror remakes are still a popular trend in Hollywood. Sure, the early 2000s craze was notable for its massive relaunches of our favorite IPs: Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, The Amityville Horror, and many more. These retellings reeled in horror fans eager to see what new elements had been added to their favorite classics. One of the first remakes to set the trend in motion was 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The film was part of the Platinum Dunes catalog when it launched to stir things up in the horror community. Michael Bay, one of the founders, was responsible for giving thumbs-up to remake projects like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Hitcher, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with only a few giving people anything to talk about. The Leatherface-starring one is one of the good ones in the universe of remakes.

The Final Girl Horror Movie Trope Explained
Image
Horror movies, particularly slasher movies, often contain a strange paradox. They depict women as two-dimensional victims, often punished for their autonomy and enjoyment of sex. Yet, they often end with a female survivor triumphing against the monster. Author Carol J. Clover discussed the trend in her book Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, and coined the term "final girl" to describe it.

The term stuck, and today, final girls are a recognized part of the horror movie landscape. More recent movies have explored the idea in depth, both enhancing and subverting it in the process. There have even been films dedicated solely to the idea, such as The Final Girl and Final Girls, both released in 2015. But the trope itself is more complicated.

Ryan Murphy at an event for Mange, prie, aime (2010)
American Horror Story‘s next death could be its own. In the wake of Tuesday’s Ahs: 1984 climax (read our recap), franchise overlord Ryan Murphy says he’s already “working on an idea” for the 10th and potentially final season of the FX juggernaut.

In an interview with our sister site Deadline, the series’ co-creator and Ep reveals that fans “will love [Season 10] because it’s about reuniting fan-favorite actors… because it might be our last season. It’s the last season we have contracted [at FX]. So, I’ve been quietly reaching out to various people. Some people I haven’t reached...

American Horror Story Season Finale Trailer: Finn Wittrock Returns!
It's hard to believe it, but there's just one installment of American Horror Story Season 9 remaining.

FX dropped the official trailer for American Horror Story Season 9 Episode 9, titled "The Final Girl," and it features the return of another fan-favorite.

Finn Wittrock, who previously appeared on American Horror Story Freak Show, Hotel, and Roanoake is staging a comeback to the franchise for one episode.

In the teaser, Montana and Trevor have fun scaring him, but it sure looks like those particular scenes could be taking place years into the future.

If that is the case, it means there's a chance he will have a connection to one of the other characters. That connection could be to Benjamin.

What if Benjamin's son survived, and returned to the place of his family's despair looking for answers? It would be an interesting hook and would make sense given that Benjamin's storyline seemingly wrapped on...

It was the ’80s, and this magical era of horror is dissected with more than 40 top-level interviews in the new film In Search of Darkness: The Definitive ’80s Horror Documentary.

Featuring Monster Squad: Celebrating the Artists Behind Cinema's Most Memorable Creatures author and Daily Dead Managing Editor Heather Wixson as one of the documentary's interviewees and producers, In Search of Darkness recently had its premiere at Beyond Fest.

Shout Factory is kicking off the New Year in style, announcing the return of a classic horror thriller that has only continued to gain a cult following since its release way back in 2001. Valentine is coming back in a big way, and this new edition is packed full of special features.

'Roses are Red. Violets are Blue. Sweet extras you'll find on this slasher film for you!' Revenge is sweet, just like Valentine's Day chocolates. At least, that is what a vengeful, Cupid-masked killer thinks. Be my Valentine ... or else. Broken hearts and other mortal wounds await a cast of contemporary young stars when they play dating-scene veterans dying for love in this humor-laced, twist-filled thriller cleverly directed by Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend) and starring David Boreanaz, Denise Richards (Starship Troopers), Marley Shelton, Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) and more. Cards, candy and flowers are nice. But for fans of stalker-shocker terror,...

Next on the list: A24’s unique brand of existential horror.) For years, I was one of the many people who avoided horror. To me, the genre meant grotesque schlock made […]

Underground Film Links: January 30, 2010
I always love new websites that celebrate the art of short films. Short of the Week is a nice new site that features some great stuff, including, yes, short films, but also news and updates. Go bookmark this one. Congrats to Bad Lit fave Jef Taylor for a successful Sundance romp! (You usually hear so little about short films at these kinds of events.) His After You Left got some nice reviews, first at Reel Guys and then at College Movie Review. It was sad to hear that Random Lunacy star Poppa Neutrino passed away last week. The New Yorker‘s Alec Wilkinson, who wrote a book on Poppa, has a wonderful remembrance. Rupert of SnuffBox Films keys us into a great new web video tool, Vid.ly, which converts video into every playable online video format possible. The sample played really great. Mike White posted up an amazing list...
