Hulu has yet to officially order a pilot, but the development process has taken great shape as of the announcement to the press. Gellar will reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers, which she played for all seven seasons of The WB/Upn original classic. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Gellar will likely recur as Buffy as she takes a young new slayer under her wing.

Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.

Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.

More than two decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its seven-season run, the beloved supernatural drama is eyeing a revival with a new chapter in the franchise. A followup series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to star, reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers, sources said. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, is set to direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). The reboot hails from Buffy the Vampire Slayer studio 20th Television and Disney sibling Searchlight TV where Zhao has been under a first-look deal.

Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series. It is unclear yet whether other original Buffy cast members would return; that is considered likely.

James Gunn has revealed which DC Comics characters almost made the cut in the Creature Commandos lineup. The show, which is the first installment in Gunn's new DC Universe, premiered on Max last December.

Creature Commandos stars an ensemble cast that includes Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoe Chao, David Harbour and Frank Grillo. Actor Sarah Michelle Gellar re-entered the spotlight with her role in the Paramount+ series Dexter: Original Sin. In the show, Gellar plays Tanya Martin, a new character introduced in this prequel to Dexter. Martin is the CSI Chief of Miami Metro Homicide and the one who teaches the young protagonist Dexter Morgan, now played by Patrick Gibson, everything he knows about blood splatter analysis in his early years as a forensics specialist and secret serial killer.

Sarah Michelle Gellar may have been opposed to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot at one point, but she’s come around to the idea more recently.

The actress, who’s currently starring in Dexter: Original Sin, stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday, where the talk show host asked her if she had any thoughts on bringing her beloved series back in some capacity.

“It’s funny. I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said. “But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

And it doesn’t have to be a prequel. “It could be anything,” the actress said. “It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.

After previously shutting down the idea, Sarah Michelle Gellar said she is now open to returning to the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” universe.

In an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Gellar shared that she has been considering reprising her role as Buffy in a potential project.

“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said on the talk show. “But watching ‘[And Just Like That…]’ and seeing ‘[Dexter: Original Sin],’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Gellar added that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would not necessarily need to be relegated to a prequel either, and that there could be a wealth of different narrative options to pursue.

“It could be anything,” Gellar added. “It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.

“Dexter: Original Sin” brings fans back to the serial killer they all know and (perhaps worth examining) love, but he’s wearing a different face this time around.

No, not literally. Dexter Morgan isn’t that kind of psychopath. Sarah Michelle Gellar will boss around a certain serial killer in training in Dexter: Original Sin. In a special guest starring role, Gellar will play Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan’s (Patrick Gibson) new boss.

Emmy winner Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed onto Dexter: Original Sin, which follows a young Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) as he becomes an avenging serial killer in Miami.

FX CEO John Landgraf, the so-called “Mayor of Television” who coined the term “Peak TV” in 2015, released his network’s annual research on the volume of U.S.-produced scripted original series for 2023, and the numbers are in line with what the industry had anticipated. The total number of broadcast, cable and streaming shows (made for adults) clocked in at 516, down a whopping 14 percent from the 600 comedies and dramas produced in 2022.

The 14 percent decline is the largest decrease since FX began tallying originals. The 516 shows are the lowest since 493 in 2020 when the pandemic halted productions for months and forced media companies to re-evaluate their financials.

It triggered a series of supernatural events, and a group of teenagers came together under strange circumstances.

Gellar, best known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, played an arson investigator named Kristin Ramsey.
