The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.
The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he's at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other's work. Now, Gunn has proven the two are close in real life, as well, with a photo on Threads that's going viral on social media.

Netflix Halts Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ Franchise After a Tough Year - Main Image
According to reports, Netflix has scrapped the planned anime series and the much-awaited expansion of the "Army of the Dead" franchise, both directed by Zack Synder.
In the first few weeks after its debut, "Army of the Dead," a popular action-horror movie on Netflix, attracted over 75 million viewers, ranking it as the ninth most-watched Netflix film ever.
Zack Synder reportedly intended to build a full-fledged universe for the series, and he had grand ambitions for the next movies.
Affected Projects Due to Army of the Dead Franchise Cancelation
The director's adaptation of Army of the Dead depicts a post-apocalyptic world overrun with zombies, whereas the original film, which was released in May 2021, under the same name, follows a gang of survivors as they plot a robbery at a Los Angeles casino. "Army of Thieves,...

Netflix has quietly canceled all follow-ups to Army of the Dead, leaving Zack Snyder's most promising franchise in the dust. Army of the Dead was Snyder's best franchise, compared to his divisive Dceu and unsuccessful Rebel Moon. Now without a franchise, Snyder has the opportunity to pursue passion projects like The Fountainhead or a small-scale film.
Netflix has quietly canceled all development on follow-ups to Army of the Dead and now, the only Zack Snyder franchise with any promising potential is gone. Snyder is one of the most polarizing filmmakers working today, described as everything from a visionary to a hack. The people who like his films really, really like them especially the bloated, indulgent directors cuts but not everyone is charmed by his saturated colors, edgelord characters, and overuse of super slow-motion.
After Snyder parted ways with Warner Bros., Netflix was quick to partner up with him.

In bad news for the Rebel Moon director, Netlix is electing not to move forward with Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead franchise.
Zack Snyder’s style of filmmaking has always been somewhat polarising, but at the moment he seems to be struggling to catch a break on that front.
His recent duo of Rebel Moon sci-fi movies came and went without much appreciation, as did the now trademark director’s cuts as well. Of course, critical appreciation hasn’t always been of paramount importance to Netflix when greenlighting new films, with the mighty algorithm considering innumerable statistics – far beyond critical appreciation – when deciding which projects should continue and which shouldn’t.
However, the winds of change are gusting over at Netflix too. Dan Lin is now in charge of the studio’s film division and we’ve now entered the era of ‘make ’em cheaper, make ’em better.

In a significant shift, Netflix has quietly shelved plans to expand Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” franchise into a full-fledged cinematic universe, canceling both a anticipated sequel film and animated series spinoff.
The streaming giant had greenlit “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” and “Planet of the Dead” to continue the story of Snyder’s zombie heist thriller, which attracted 75 million households in its first month after debuting in 2021. However, low viewership of the director’s recent Netflix epic “Rebel Moon” has reportedly caused the platform to halt building out the “Army of the Dead” universe.
“Army of the Dead” proved a massive hit for Netflix, with the prequel film “Army of Thieves” also performing well with 72 million viewing hours in its second weekend. But sources say Netflix has lost enthusiasm for Snyder’s ambitious plans after “Rebel Moon” parts 1 and 2 failed to break into the streamer’s Top 10 despite initially high viewing,...

A once fruitful creative relationship between Netflix and director Zack Snyder could possibly be on the rocks. Snyder delivered two big hits for the streamer with 2021's Army of the Dead and its prequel spinoff, Army of Thieves. This resulted in plans emerging for another sequel and an animated series to expand the universe. However, further news on these new projects has stalled lately, and it looks like the reason for that has now become clear - the Army of the Dead franchise is...well, dead.
According to a report from The Wrap, it would appear that Netflix has quietly shelved Snyder's entire Army of the Dead Universe. That means the planned animated series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and the live-action sequel, reportedly titled Planet of the Dead, look to be off the table. While the report doesn't go into details of why Snyder's zombie universe has been abandoned,...

Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead 2, officially titled Planet of the Dead, was given a disappointing update in regards to the movie's upcoming Netflix release.
Army of the Dead was released in 2021 and followed a group of mercenaries as they tried to pull off a $200 million heist in a zombie-filled Las Vegas.
After the Netflix film was released, talks of a sequel and other spin-offs were discussed, with one, a prequel named Army of Thieves, already on Netflix.

Zack Snyder is many things as a filmmaker. Chief amongst them? The man is ambitious. While the results of those ambitions are often divisive, nobody can deny that Snyder tends to swing for the fences. He didn't just pitch a "Superman" film to Warner Bros. and DC, he pitched a full-on, wild take on the franchise. It didn't exactly pan out but he had big plans. Similarly, in the aftermath of the mess that was "Justice League," Snyder went to Netflix to make the zombie heist flick "Army of the Dead." It was meant to be the start of a big franchise, with sequels, spin-offs, and more to follow. Now, it looks like the franchise is pretty much dead in the water.

We have some bad news to report, horror fans. It looks like we won't be seeing any more new installments in the Army of the Dead franchise like we had been initially promised. All of the Army of the Dead future films and the animated series have been reportedly quietly canceled. More on this below.
Back in September 2020, months before Army of the Dead had even come out, Netflix had announced that it would be working with Zack Snyder again to make a prequel movie and an animated prequel series. Then, in July 2021, the streaming giant greenlit a direct sequel to Army of the Dead, a film that Snyder was said to start working on after making Rebel Moon.
While the prequel movie Army of Thieves did get made and come out in 2021, the animated series and the live-action sequel haven't. The animated series was officially titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,...

For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel called Planet of the Dead was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his Rebel Moon sci-fi movies – and The Wrap has revealed that Netflix “quietly canceled” plans for an Army of the Dead Universe.
In an article on the Rebel Moon films that features interviews with Snyder and his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder, The Wrap mentions, “Army of the Dead, a movie the Snyders made for Netflix before Rebel Moon, had a similarly ambitious (universe/franchise) plan, with several sequels and spin-offs in the works,...

Seventeen years after remaking George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Zack Snyder returned to the realm of zombie cinema with Netflix’s Army of the Dead in 2021, which was supposed to spawn a prequel movie, a live action sequel, and an animated series. To date, only the spinoff prequel – Army of Thieves – has seen the light of day… and that may remain the case.
A new report from The Wrap seems to indicate that Netflix has pulled the plug on the Army of the Dead Universe, with the sequel movie and the animated series being scrapped.
The planned animated series was titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” and last we heard, Snyder’s live action sequel to Army of the Dead was going to be titled Planet of the Dead.
Both projects, however, may have been buried six feet under.

Netflix has reportedly cancelled Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise, halting future projects that were originally aimed at expanding the series. Plans for the animated spinoff Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and the movie spinoff Planet of the Dead have seemingly been scrapped. The zombie franchise's demise doesn't bode well for Rebel Moon's planned shared universe, which could suffer the same fate if not successful enough.
Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise has been reportedly cancelled at Netflix, with seemingly no plans for the franchise to continue beyond the previously-released films. The post-apocalyptic series centers around the zombie apocalypse, with the original movie of the same name focusing on a group of survivors pulling off a heist in a Los Angeles casino. This initial film was released in May 2021, while a prequel, Army of Thieves, came out in October that same year. While Army of the Dead 2 hadn't been confirmed,...

“We’ve got to visit them one day!”
It is, among everything else happening in “Space Babies“, a pretty throwaway line. Ruby Sunday notices the Tardis has landed indoors, and says “Is that like a matter transporter, like in Star Trek?” And the Doctor answers, “We’ve got to visit them one day!”
Blowing that one line up into an entire article may seem excessive.
But the thing is, when Russell T Davies announced he’d be getting back on his throne as the King of Doctor Who, he had lots of new ideas, but also, some that he never got around to. We already know that episode five of this series is based on an idea that was too expensive to film last time.
And one of the Great White Whales of Davies’s last tenure, ever since the Eccleston days, was a Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover episode.

For years, Zack Snyder considered making a sequel to his breakthrough film, a remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. But following his packed schedule in the late-2000s and his commitment to the Dceu in the 2010s, a bigger and better sequel never came through.
However, following his departure from the DC universe, in 2021, Snyder was able to revisit the realm of zombies with Army of the Dead, a spiritual successor to the 2004 remake, thanks to Netflix. But unlike his first zombie release, Snyder assured fans that a sequel to the 2021 movie is on the cards, but it might take a while.

Zack Snyder made his name with his gruesome, much more action-y remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 2004. The director then tried to line up an even bigger sequel called Army of the Dead for years, but there were many detours along the way, including his eventual role as the chief architect of the early Dceu. He finally returned to his long-lost zombie sequel in 2021, this time as the launching point of a whole new cinematic universe for Netflix, which also included a crime thriller prequel called Army of Thieves and even an animated series about the initial outbreak in Las Vegas.
There was also talk of a direct sequel to Army of the Dead, which left no shortage of mysteries left to answer in a part two. Were Dave Bautista’s Scott Ward and his team of mercenaries in a time loop all along? What...

While preparing for the impending release of Rebel Moon, director Zack Snyder teased his exciting plans for the future of Netflix’s Army of the Dead franchise.
It has been over a year since the successful launch of Snyder’s zombie heist franchise, which began with the Dave Bautista-led Army of the Dead movie in May 2021, and was followed by Matthias Schweighöfer’s prequel film Army of Thieves in October 2021. Because of the positive fan response, Snyder started developing its sequel and an animated spinoff series. However, the Man of Steel director ultimately decided to pause development on his Army of the Dead projects in order to shift his focus on building a new sci-fi franchise after Netflix greenlit his long-time passion project Rebel Moon. Speaking with Games Radar+, Snyder finally opened up about his delayed Army of the Dead projects, assuring waiting fans that he’s still committed to expanding the zombie franchise.

Zack Snyder regains rights to his 300 sequel script after Warner Bros. initially passed on it. The sequel, titled Blood and Ashes, would have been an "incredibly homoerotic, super violent" war epic. Zack Snyder’s plans for an unlikely 300 sequel have gotten a positive update from the director after Warner Bros. originally passed on his script. Zack Snyder's sci-fi film "Rebel Moon: Part One -- A Child of Fire" -- to cite its full title -- is due for release on December 15, 2023, and, like all of Snyder's films, promises to be visually complex and cinematically overblown. Snyder loves a certain kind of hazy photography as well as bold, brassy characters, usually living within an action-packed milieu that allows them to deliver profound-sounding platitudes in bedroom-voiced monologues while slashing people open in slow-motion. "Rebel Moon" will be a sci-fi riff on the "Seven Samurai" story, with a distant-future agrarian moon standing in for a beleaguered 16th-century Japanese village, and an encroaching Empire-like army standing in for Kurosawa's itinerant bandits. Sofia Boutella will play a character who travels the galaxy to gather up a ragtag group of failed warriors to protect her moon from almost-assured destruction.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead share the same universe, revealing a vast mythology that never made it into the movies. While Snyder is currently focused on Rebel Moon, there are plans for a Planet of the Dead movie. Snyder's energy is currently directed towards Rebel Moon, but the expanding universe of Army of the Dead offers the potential for future growth and exploration.
Zack Snyder may be building a much bigger franchise than his fans imagine with Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead, as the director reveals both cinematographic sagas share the same universe.
The fact that Snyder decided to leave behind the world of the great superhero franchises does not mean that he has moved away from creating big multiverses, and he keeps proving it. In 2021, the filmmaker released Army of the Dead, the first film in a major action saga created exclusively for Netflix.

He mentioned how a Rebel moon character was supposed to be in a planned animated series spinoff for Army of the Dead, referring to Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. Snyder then shared how the animated series had made it pretty far into production, to the point where it could be watched in its "crazy animatic form," but it doesn't sound like it will see the light of day.

Zack Snyder's wildly different Netflix movies are part of the same cinematic universe.
In the latest issue of Total Film (per GamesRadar), Snyder spoke about the "vast mythology" of Army of the Dead that was never showcased in the zombie movie. There were plans to further explore that world in an animated spinoff series that never came to fruition, but if it had, it would have set up a link between Army of the Dead and Snyder's two-part sci-fi adventure story, Rebel Moon. The unmade series would've included Rebel Moon characters while even revealing how an interdimensional portal would be introduced to explain the apparent crossover.

Zack Snyder’s 2021 zombie movie Army of the Dead was supposed to spawn an animated series titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” you may recall, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep about that project. In a new interview with Total Film that went up today, Snyder suggests that the planned animated series is no longer moving forward at Netflix.
Additionally, Snyder tells Total Film that “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” would’ve revealed that the franchise takes place in the same universe as Snyder’s upcoming Rebel Moon.

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski approves of Zack Snyder potentially directing the movie adaptation, citing Snyder's talent in working with existing IP. Snyder's success with adaptations like Dawn of the Dead and 300 makes Bleszinski believe he would be a great fit for the project. Army of the Dead's impact on Snyder's relationship with Netflix and Dave Bautista's endorsement may have played a role in him being considered for the Gears of War movie.
Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has given his blessing for Zack Snyder to potentially helm the movie adaptation of his hit video game franchise. After multiple attempts at bringing the video game property to life, Netflix became the latest to try their hand at the project, announcing both a new movie and an adult animated series in November 2022. Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise has the potential for significant growth, surpassing the expansion of his Army of the Dead series. Rebel Moon has already begun pushing into other media forms, including a tie-in video game that will expand the universe from the movies. The vast world of Rebel Moon, with its diverse characters, fantastical elements, and merchandising potential, presents numerous opportunities for spin-offs, tie-in books, comic books, toys, and more.
Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise has a vast potential to grow in a way that his Army of the Dead series has not yet managed. Snyder's Rebel Moon is divided into two movies, titled Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver. Director Zack Snyder is interested in making a Gears of War movie, but the original creator would only agree if Dave Bautista plays the central character, Marcus. Netflix, who already has a good working relationship with Snyder, may give him control of the Gears of War project. This potential project could have implications for Snyder's planned Army of the Dead sequel, though, as Netflix may prioritize the Gears of War movie over it.
Director Zack Snyder has revealed his interest in making a Gears of War movie, but the original creator has one condition. Based on the best-selling Gears of War videogame franchise that began with the original 2006 game, plans for a live-action adaptation of the property had begun as early as 2007 when New Line Cinema were the first to buy the film rights. Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise has captivated audiences with its intense narrative, character depth, and unique Snyder touch, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the sequel, Planet of the Dead. Snyder, however, faces challenges in navigating between the zombie universe and his new sci-fi project, Rebel Moon, but hints at an interconnected yet distinct narrative structure for future films. In addition to the sequel, fans can look forward to the anime project, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which delves into the origin of the zombie apocalypse and serves as a precursor to the live-action sequel, promising an increased scale of the movie.
Sequels and franchises aren't novelties in the entertainment industry. Yet, when a mastermind like Zack Snyder hints at a tantalizingly "twisted" continuation to one of Netflix's hottest titles, ears perk up, and fans sit at the edge of their seats.

Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder shared a new update about his highly-anticipated sequel to Netflix’s 2021’s zombie heist movie.
Last March 23, it was officially confirmed that development on the Army of the Dead sequel has been put on hold until he completes work on his upcoming sci-fi epic Rebel Moon movies. Now, Snyder has finally opened up about the delayed project titled Planet of the Dead, teasing that the zombie franchise will get "pretty twisted as it goes up." Zack Snyder teases the "twisted" nature of the future Army of the Dead franchise. Snyder plans to continue expanding his zombie-action universe, with a sequel to Army of Thieves and an animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. The first film included Easter egg-level details that set up possibilities for future movies, leaving audiences guessing about the meaning behind these hints and which ones will be paid off.

Fans can now get a deeper look at Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon.
Via Vanity Fair, Snyder, known for 300 and his work with the DC Extended Universe, fleshed out his vision of the sci-fi epic with a new set of images. While many of them focus on the ensemble cast, Charlie Hunnam's character Kai gets a spotlight, showing off the disheveled pilot's gritty aesthetic. Together with protagonist Kora (Sofia Butella), he will lead the resistance against Mother Earth, a large organization that seeks to strip a small, defenseless planet of its precious resources. Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!) who narrated the teaser railer, plays the disillusioned warrior, General Titus, just one of the many warriors Kora and Kai try to enlist for the rebellion.

The movie will be one of the most ambitious Netflix films to date, with a $166 million budget split over two films.

A few years ago, Zack Snyder started building the Army of the Dead franchise at the Netflix streaming service. His zombie movie Army of the Dead was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves. An animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works, and Snyder himself was expected to direct the Army of the Dead sequel Planet of the Dead. He was developing the Planet of the Dead script with Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the first film with him… But we haven’t heard anything more about that project in a while, because Snyder has shifted his focus to building another franchise at Netflix. The sci-fi franchise Rebel Moon. Now, in an interview with The Nerd Queens (as reported by Collider), Snyder has confirmed that Planet of the Dead will have to wait until after they know exactly where the Rebel Moon franchise is going.

Writer and director Zack Snyder clarifies the status of Army of the Dead 2 after the project was first announced in 2021. Army of the Dead was released on Netflix in May of 2021, chronicling a doomed mission to recover an abundance of cash in a zombie-overrun version of Las Vegas. The movie quickly became one of the streamer's most-watched originals, and while a spinoff prequel called Army of Thieves arrived later that same year, Planet of the Dead, the planned sequel, has yet to come to fruition.
Now, in a recent interview with The Nerd Queens, Snyder offers an update on Army of the Dead 2, confirming that the project is still very much in the works. The director confirms that the main reason for the delay is actually his work on Rebel Moon, his upcoming Netflix space opera that may very well kickstart its own franchise universe. Rebel Moon star Corey Stoll has nothing but praise for filmmaker Zack Snyder, suggesting that he is an "actor’s director". Scheduled to be released by Netflix in December this year, the story behind Snyder’s Rebel Moon originally began as an idea for a Star Wars film that he once pitched to Lucasfilm. Once intended to be a single movie, Snyder’s expansive concept for the property inevitably led to it being split into two films.
Most recently Stoll, who also appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, spoke with Collider about his work on Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi epic. Suggesting that both the film’s cast and crew “would go to the ends of the earth for him”, he was full of praise for the director’s work ethic, enthusiasm, and approachability. This latest testimonial comes on the heels of similar comments made by Stoll’s fellow Rebel Moon co-star Cleopatra Coleman.

Although Zack Snyder has plenty of projects in development, one oft-mentioned dream film is a disaster waiting to happen. Snyder currently has a first-look deal with Netflix, which has produced the zombie movie Army of the Dead and upcoming sequel Planet of the Dead, with the sci-fi movie Rebel Moon set to release in 2023. Other Snyder projects that have been announced include Horse Latitudes, a drama about a war photographer in South America, and a version of the King Arthur story set during the American gold rush. However, it is Snyder's long-discussed adaptation of Ayn Rand's 1943 novel The Fountainhead that poses the biggest potential danger.
Interestingly, Snyder's stated reasons for adapting this novel are not its politics, but could still create issues as Snyder tries to forget the Dceu Snyderverse and his unfinished superhero story. The Fountainhead is the story of ambitious young architect Howard Roark, who struggles to...

As the middle child in a run of Doctor Who specials, ‘Legend of the Sea Devils’ finds itself in something of an unenviable position. Much like Easter 2009’s ‘Planet of the Dead’, the episode can’t rely on the star power of foes like the Daleks or Cybermen, and people are already looking past it in anticipation of upheaval and an upcoming regeneration later in the year.
Of course, the same was true of ‘The Waters of Mars’, and that more than earned its place in fans’ hearts thanks to its great premise and performances, so it’s still possible for a stand-alone story to surprise us if it’s told well. ‘Legend of the Sea Devils’, it must be said, is not a surprising story, although the tone it takes is rather unexpected.

Never one to do things in small measures, Zack Snyder developed his zombie movie "Army of the Dead" to launch a shared universe featuring spinoffs, sequels, and prequels. The first such addition to the franchise, this past October's "Army of Thieves," revealed what the oddball safe-cracker Ludwig Dieter got up to before joining a crack team of mercenaries to break into a legendary vault stuck in the middle of zombie-overrun Las Vegas in "Army of the Dead." Snyder is also planning to make a sequel movie — titled "Planet of the Dead" — that may yet include a spot for Dieter in its story.

After premiering on Netflix in May, Zack Snyder’s zombie heist movie “Army of the Dead” was quickly reanimated for the prequel treatment. Just five months later, “Army of Thieves,” which has perhaps the fastest turnaround ever for a follow-up film, expands the world by exploring the backstory of quirky safecracker Ludwig Dieter, played by actor and director Matthias Schweighöfer.
“Army of the Dead” smashed together the zombie, action and heist genres to huge success; Netflix reported a substantial 75 million member households watched the film in its first 28 days. Starring Schweighöfer, Dave Bautista, Ana de la Reguera, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro and more, the ensemble cast is hired by a mysterious billionaire named Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) to break into a Las Vegas casino and rob a vault in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
Unsurprisingly, many of the characters met their zombie-bitten doom by the time the credits rolled.

Army of Thieves, the prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, has less to do with zombies than you might expect. Yes, there are a few undead creatures shambling around the claustrophobic hallways of Ludwig Dieter’s (Matthias Schweighöfer) nightmares and on European newscasts showing the horrific outbreak in Las Vegas, but the movie’s not really interested in what’s happening across the Atlantic. Instead, Army of Thieves is about the mythical safes built by legendary (and fictional) locksmith Hans Wagner, one of which will eventually become the vault Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), Ludwig, and the rest of the squad of mercenaries will risk their lives for in Army of the Dead.
