Jack Quaid's new action movie, Novocaine, has officially secured the number one spot in its opening weekend at the box office in what is turning out to be a very disappointing month for theatrical releases.
According to Variety, Novocaine's $8.7 million opening took the top spot at the box office, knocking Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 down to second place. Despite earning the top spot, Novocaine's opening weekend haul fell a bit short of the $10 million it was projected to make and also holds the unfortunate distinction of being one of the lowest-grossing movies to earn the number one spot in its opening weekend since the pandemic. However, box office returns are down across the board, as the latest weekend is one of the worst of 2025, with all films grossing just $52 million. However, Novocaine appears to be on track to make a decent profit, as the film cost just $18 million to make.

Good horror movies have a way of peeping into the uncharted territories of our minds—the space that we want to keep hidden from the rest of the world—either in fear of judgment or in recognition of our own insecurities and imperfections. Body horror movies go a step further into this exploration of our psychological vulnerabilities by tapping into something primal, as seen in some memorable recent releases like Smile, The Substance, A Different Man, etc. Hulu’s recent release, Control Freak, a body/psychological horror that delineates the undoing of the human mind, proves to be another well-made entry to the genre. Even though, like most original horror releases in recent years, the scare factor isn’t really there and the narrative twists and turns aren’t completely out of the box. Still, backed with good acting, navigating themes like the futility of warfare, generational trauma, and the importance of mental health,...

In 1996, a violent man was convicted and sentenced to ten years for stalking and threatening the life of pop legend Madonna, with the man reportedly telling her bodyguard that he intended to slit her throat if she didn’t marry him. That man would later escape the mental hospital but was quickly apprehended again before any further harm was caused.

Radiohead haven’t released an album since 2016, but the band’s frontman, Thom Yorke, has been on an extraordinary run of studio creativity lately, laying down three great albums with the Smile, his band with Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood and jazz drummer Tom Skinner. And it turns out that since 2020, Yorke has been quietly enmeshed in another collaboration, piecing together a sublime new album with veteran electronic producer Mark Pritchard: Tall Tales, due May 9 on Warp Records. It’s accompanied by an intensely trippy animated film by artist Jonathan Zawada,...

Over the past eight years, horror has experienced a remarkable resurgence, delivering some of the most innovative and terrifying films in decades. Studios are pushing boundaries, taking creative risks, and reaping the rewards as audiences embrace bold, unsettling storytelling. While A24 has had years of being heralded as the home for arthouse horror another contender has been quietly but steadily carving out its own niche in the genre: Neon. Known for its unflinching commitment to promoting weird, boundary-pushing stories, Neon is making a strong case for itself as the new leading distributor in the genre. With a mix of daring storytelling, impeccable marketing, and a keen understanding of what makes horror work, the studio is showing that disturbing, thought-provoking horror isn’t just a trend -- it’s the future of the genre.

The demon from Parker Finn's "Smile" movies has a very peculiar mode of operations. It's largely invisible, and it can induce hallucinations in its chosen hosts. It typically appears to its victims as someone they know, or perhaps a stranger, but always wearing a very creepy smile. For a few weeks, the demon tortures its host with hallucinations, eventually taking over their bodies. Once possessed, the victim themselves would smile horrifyingly, while taking their own life. The self-slaughter is, as the demon dictates, performed in front of a witness. The witness, in seeing a smiling person kill themselves, gives them trauma that allows the demon to pass onto them. The cycle then repeats.
The "Smile" movies are very clearly about the way trauma can be passed from generation to generation, and how violence and self-harm can create a never-ending cycle. Despite the strangeness of the premise, the "Smile" movies are surprisingly scary,...

Noted…don’t try to scare Robert Pattinson.
During a recent conversation with his Mickey 17 director, Bong Joon Ho for GQ, the actor opened up about the reason why he “can’t watch horror movies anymore” as an adult.
“I used to watch a lot of dark stuff when I was younger and think like, ‘Yeah, this is cool.’ And now, I’m too sensitive,” he admitted. “It’s strange, you’d think it would go the other way round. As you get older, you become less frightened of these [films]. I can’t watch horror movies anymore.”
While Bong questioned if it was because the actor “became a dad,” Pattinson confessed with a laugh that his fears surrounding horror films “happened before that though.” The actor shares a baby girl with girlfriend Suki Waterhouse.

Robert Pattinson definitely did not want to freestyle-dance for Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love.”
Pattinson told GQ in a video (below) alongside “Mickey 17” writer/director Bong Joon Ho that he almost had a “mental breakdown” amid filming a dance sequence with his co-star Jennifer Lawrence. Pattinson pleaded with Ramsay to have the scene be removed from the script, or be choreographed instead.
“I did this movie with Lynne Ramsay, and she’s a really good dancer. And Jennifer Lawrence is a really good dancer. They just find it so easy. They’re like, ‘Just dance, it’s just music playing, just dance,'” Pattinson said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have a mental breakdown when this happens. The 23rd edition of the Golden Schmoes voting period ended at midnight, and now we’ve got a full list of all of the winners chosen by our readers! The longest-running, fan-voted awards on the internet, the winners are always very interesting in that they reveal, in surprising ways, both the divide between fans and traditional voting bodies (like the Academy) and their similarities at times. This year, we didn’t have any record-breakers in terms of the most awarded films, with Deadpool & Wolverine earning 7 nods, while The Substance earned 5, and Dune: Part Two earned 4. The all-time champ for the most wins ever for The Golden Schmoes is still The Dark Knight, with 12 wins.
Both Dune: Part Two and The Substance are Academy favourites this year, while Deadpool & Wolverine was mostly overlooked. However, one movie that’s beloved by the Academy, Emilia Perez, was seemingly hated by our voters,...

Well Go USA has announced it’ll be distributing the new indie thriller Cold Wallet on digital platforms this Friday. The movie will also enjoy a limited run in select theaters.
The film is about a group of Redditors who got caught up in the crypto hype of the early 2020s, lost all their money, and now want revenge. So they track down the dwelling of the man who swindled them all with plans to rob him blind. You know the recent trend of heist movies that have the burglars turn out to be the unfortunate ones and the person they chose to steal from being more evil than they are? This is another one. “When the home invasion takes a turn for the worst, they become victims in a sadistic game,” says the logline.

Rlje Films and Shudder have dropped the first red band teaser for Clown in a Cornfield, the much anticipated slasher from Smile producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Based on Adam Cesare’s hit novel, the film is set to make its world premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 10 before hitting cinemas nationwide on May 9.
Directed by Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), this fresh horror offering introduces audiences to the eerie town of Kettle Springs, a place still reeling from economic collapse after the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. The film follows Quinn (Katie Douglas) and her father Glenn (Carson MacCormac), who relocate in search of a quiet life, only to find themselves caught in the town’s growing tensions. Long-standing grudges between older residents and restless teenagers bubble beneath the surface, but an even darker presence looms in the fields.

Everyone’s a friend of Frendo. Rlje Films and Shudder have released the first red band teaser trailer for “Clown in a Cornfield,” Eli Craig’s 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival-bound horror movie based on Adam Cesare’s novel of the same name.
“Clown in a Cornfield” stars Katie Douglas and Carson MacCormac as father-daughter duo Quinn and Glenn, who relocate to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, Quinn “discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down,” according to an official synopsis.

Peacock has landed Climbing in Heels, Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ drama series adaptation of her upcoming novel of the same name, with a script-to-series commitment. This marks the first big sale for Star under the multi-year overall deal he signed with Universal Television last year.
Deadline first reported of Universal TV preemptively buying the rights to Climbing in Heels in December, ahead of the novel’s April 29, 2025 release via St. Martin’s Press. Star, who also created Sex and the City, and Goldsmith-Thomas will co-write and executive produce the proposed series, which he describes as the “ballsy and bawdy love child of Mad Men and Sex and the City.”

Disney's eclectic lineup of female characters has undergone many changes over the years. Their earlier female protagonists, most often princesses, emanated more traditional notions of feminity through their manners, attire, and interests. More recently, Disney has been criticized for creating negative role models for girls to look up to, as many of these characters, even with their admirable qualities, are often saved or guided by the influence of a man. Disney heroines of today are known for their quirky personalities, sometimes irrational behavior, and strong will and inclination to do what's right.
A lot of these characters still retain aspects of conventional feminity, such as wearing dresses and showing genuine kindness to those around them. What's different is the emphasis on their intellect and self-reliance, which is often centralized in the story, moving away from the typical Disney princess archetype. These contemporary Disney princesses are absolutely outstanding role models, but...

Through her roles in titles like The Babysitter, Ready or Not and Azrael, Samara Weaving has defined herself as one of the best modern horror actresses. Soon, she’ll be doing it all over again in Jimmy Warden’s directorial debut, Borderline. Today, the debut trailer for the film has been released, teasing the Scream VI’s actress’ latest dip into the pulse-pounding world of horror, this time angled with a thriller and comedy twist that will drum up memories of Rob Reiner’s 1990 adaptation of the Stephen King classic, Misery. Featuring supporting performances by an absolutely unhinged and out of his mind Ray Nicholson (Smile 2), the film promises to satiate Weaving fans as they wait for further updates about Ready or Not 2.

‘Smile 2’ director Parker Finn is open to making a sequel. The 37-year-old filmmaker - who helmed the 2024 horror movie and its 2022 predecessor - has revealed he hasn’t closed the door on the series yet, but has stressed any new flicks set in the franchise would remain “thoughtful” and “emotionally grounded”. Speaking with Collider, Finn said: “I think that if there were more directions for ‘Smile’ to go in I'd want to make sure that it stays very thoughtful and sort of thematic and emotionally grounded with characters because I think that's what makes the ‘Smile’ movies work and I want to make sure that it continues to be fresh and unexpected, so we'll have to see.”‘Smile 2’ follows pop mega-star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) as her life begins to unravel after a haunting smile figure takes the form of her former partner Paul (Ray Nicholson) and mercilessly torments her.

Demons have haunted humanity's tales since the dawn of time, with different parts of the world coming up with uniquely nightmarish monsters to be afraid of. Since the era of filmmaking, however, stories of demon possession have become a part of global pop culture. One of the most recent additions to this subgenre of horror movies is The Pope's Exorcist, available to stream on Netflix. Though a promising story based on a real exorcist, the movie failed to bring anything new to the genre.
However, there are some impactful horror movies with a demon as the villain. Some of these are icons of the genre, whereas others haven't received the credit they deserve. The majority of these demons have chilling physical forms, terrifying origin stories, and shocking abilities that make them the scariest demonic forces in horror. That said, even those invisible to the naked eye are capable of terrifying the bravest viewers.

While we wait for Orphan 3, which was officially announced last November, franchise star Isabelle Fuhrman has set up her next project. Fuhrman will star in the thriller Die by Night.
Variety details this afternoon that Ben Hardy and Scoot McNairy will also star in the dystopian movie.
The outlet also reports, “The feature is being launched by Protagonist Pictures ahead of the upcoming EFM in Berlin. Protagonist is handling international sales while UTA Independent Film Group is representing North American rights.”
Die by Night is set over the course of one night in a world where “the only way to survive to see a new day is to trust each other and stay in the light until you make it to The Wall.”
Creatures known as The Horde hunt down surviving humans in the dark in the film’s post-apocalyptic world, where long stretches of darkness plunge the world into chaos.

The good times are rolling for Osgood Perkins and Neon ahead of the release of The Monkey. In just a week following its debut, the official trailer for the director's Stephen King adaptation has racked up 109 million views across all social media platforms including TikTok, 43 million of which were there within the first 24 hours. Capturing that many eyes gives the murderous toy chimp the most-watched trailer ever for an indie horror film, though such impressive numbers are enough to top even major studio releases. Comparing it to buzzy releases within the past few years, the first trailers for Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone (73 million views), Parker Finn's Smile (100 million views), and, most recently, Robert Eggers's Nosferatu (74 million views) all couldn't match the sheer power of The Monkey.

The movie, the first for Perkins after the success of Longlegs and based on the Stephen King short story, racked up more than 43M views in its first 24 hours of dropping online and clicked past 100M in its first 72 hours, arguably a record for a non-mpa studio independent horror movie. The original Smile became a sleeper hit for writer/director Parker Finn in 2022, so it’s no surprise that the film has generated a sequel just two years later, especially given its obvious franchise potential. It’s particularly gratifying to find Finn back in both the writer’s and the director’s chairs, because he’s surely one of the finest jump scare orchestrators in the business.

2024 has been a huge year for the horror genre. From the global success of Coralie Fargeat's The Substance to Hugh Grant turning his charming persona into a chilling performance in Heretic, horror fans have had more than their fair share to get excited about over the past twelve months. One of the year's biggest success stories in the genre has been the hotly-anticipated return of Smile with a sequel that saw the entire cast shaken up with only the central demonic entity keeping its place. With a bold decision came instant triumph, with the movie smashing all expectations and racing to box office glory.

Out today from our friends at Paramount, comes Smile 2 for the more brutal and terrifying section of your home video library. The writer/director/producer Parker Finn is back for more, and is following the horror movie creed that the sequel to a hit should be bigger, nastier, and gorier. Well, it is, and I loved the first film. Finn builds on the original great Smile concept of a demon or otherworldly being that feeds off trauma until the death of the host. This being then leaps to its next victim, creating misery and catastrophe everywhere in order to grow stronger. I’m just going to call it a demon from here on out, it’s simpler. Smile 2 starts off less than a week from the original...

As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.
Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.
Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.
But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

Although Smile 2’s ending should have been exceptionally obvious, the horror sequel managed to make the twist feel like a genuine surprise thanks to some incredibly clever misdirections. Director Parker Finn’s sequel Smile 2 builds on the world established by 2022’s sleeper hit Smile from its opening scene onward. The bravura opening sequence sees Smile’s doomed antihero Joel venture into the trap house of some drug dealers so he can pass the curse onto them, only for him to accidentally also implicate Lukas Gage’s luckless small-time drug dealer Lewis. This bodes badly for Naomi Scott’s Skye.
