Jeff Daniels is stepping into Shrinking Season 3, and honestly, we’re all ears – because when this Emmy-winning powerhouse joins a cast that already boasts Harrison Ford, you know stuff’s about to get even juicier. Apple TV+ clearly isn’t playing around, adding another Hollywood heavyweight to its hit dramedy.

But who’s he playing? A rival therapist? A long-lost friend? A chaotic wildcard ready to shake things up? Whatever it is, expect Daniels to bring in his signature mix of charm, wit, and emotional depth.

Adam Brooks is on board to both write and direct the project. Exclusive: Apple TV+ has landed for development Dilettante, a series starring Jeff Daniels as a character that will likely get the New York media circles buzzing, Deadline has learned. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions, is inspired by Dana Brown’s memoir about working for former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.
Written by Brown and Julia creator Daniel Goldfarb, Dilettante is described as a fictionalized coming-of-age story set in the glamorous and cutthroat “Golden Age” of magazines in 1990s New York.
Daniels will play a fictional magazine editor that is certain to draw parallels to Carter the way another work of fiction about a young assistant to a powerful New York magazine editor, the movie The Devil Wears Prada, has been evoking Anna Wintour as a prototype for its editor character played by Meryl Streep.
Jeff Bridges previously played a magazine editor loosely based on Carter...

It can be very hard to keep up with the television output that floods the screens of every household in the world these days. The streaming age of television has forced a higher demand than ever before from audiences hungry for content. The word content to describe television feels dirty in that most stories should be perceived as stories, cinema or art. However, a well-oiled machine exists now that gives audiences more than they bargained for. Streamers have the ability to mass produce, and it has also caused an uptick in network and cable television output as well. The problem with having so much TV to consume is that it has forced a shorter bandwidth for the viewers' attention. The other problem with today's pop-culture wheel is that it feels too connected to the masses because of social media giving a louder voice to the viewer.

The best of Maura Tierney's movies and TV shows highlight an amazing career from a character actor who has been steadily working in the business for decades. Tierney's professional acting career began in the late 1980s, but it was in the early '90s when she started getting more substantial roles and having her talents recognized on a bigger scale. From that point on, Tierney became a fixture in high-profile roles, ranging from broad comedies to intense dramas to the occasional blockbuster.
Tierney's movie career is one that isn't filled with huge starring roles, but she has worked with some incredible directors, like Christopher Nolan, while starring alongside actors like Jim Carrey, Adam Driver, and Glen Powell. However, Tierney is also one of those actors who transitions back and forth between movies and television effortlessly, starring in several acclaimed series over her career. Law & Order season 26 features a small but significant cast of characters who drive the action in every episode. For almost a quarter of a century, this series has focused on the police and court aspects of the justice system. It is most closely associated with Sam Waterston, who is, unfortunately, one of the Law & Order cast members who is not returning for season 26. However, most of the cast in this series is returning, and one new cast member is being added..
Law & Order has always focused more on police procedural aspects than on character-driven stories; thus, the police and cops in the show are easier to replace when an actor leaves. It has had its share of cast turnover, most notably when Chris Noth left Law & Order over a contract dispute. Maura Tierney is about to join Law and Order and is giving a peek at what to expect from her new boss!
Law and Order fans are used to the revolving door of cast members coming and going over the show's 34-year history. Season 23 opened with Jeffrey Donovan having left as Frank Cosgrove and Reid Scott joining as Detective Vincent Riley. Midway through the season, Sam Waterston ended his long run as iconic D.A. Jack McCoy with Tony Goldwyn replacing him as Nicholas Baxter.
So it was little surprise it was announced in May that Camryn Manheim, who had joined the show in its 2022 revival as Lieutenant Kate Dixon, would be departing the series. There's no word on how Dixon leaves, but the show has already cast her replacement, with Maura Tierney joining the season 24 premiere as Lieutenant Jessica Grady.

Exclusive: Jeff Daniels (A Man in Full), Jared Harris (Chernobyl) and J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos) have signed on to star in Reykjavik, a historical drama from Sk Global (Anyone But You) that chronicles one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of modern times: The Reykjavik Summit.
Reykjavik takes place at the most dangerous point of the Cold War, watching as political enemies Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev meet in Iceland over one long, tense weekend to decide if there will be peace or war in the world.
Daniels plays U.S. President Reagan, with Harris as Soviet leader Gorbachev, and Simmons as United States Secretary of State George Shultz.
Michael Russell Gunn will direct from his own script, in his feature debut, following his work with Sk Global as showrunner of its acclaimed limited series Thai Cave Rescue for Netflix. He also produces alongside John Logan Pierson. Production will commence on location in Reykjavik, Iceland in early October, with extensive filming at Höfði House, the actual site of the 1986 summit.
Sources tell Deadline that Gunn’s project is one that he’s spent years working on and researching. His work began when he drove out to Stanford to interview Secretary of State Shultz before his passing, receiving now-declassified transcripts from the summit. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the recent revelation that the U.S. will again deploy long-range missiles in Germany, the hope is to reflect on how we, as citizens and as nations, can come together to work past our differences, in pursuit of a better, safer world.
Daniels is coming off of A Man in Full, Netflix’s limited series from David E. Kelley, which adapts the 1998 novel from Tom Wolfe. Recently, he was also seen starring opposite Maura Tierney in the crime drama American Rust, which ran for two seasons.
Most recently boarding Kathryn Bigelow’s new film for Netflix, as we were first to report, Harris also stars in Apple TV+ and Skydance’s sci-fi series Foundation, based on the works of Isaac Asimov, which previewed its forthcoming third season at Comic-Con. Previously garnering Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Chernobyl, he’s also recently wrapped on the indies Brave the Dark and Reawakening.
Following roles in films like National Champions and Being the Ricardos, Simmons’ upcoming slate includes the Clint Eastwood pic Juror #2, Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, Amazon’s sequel to The Accountant and holiday event film Red One, and the addiction film The Prince written by David Mamet.
Prior to Thai Cave Rescue, Gunn wrote and produced for the critically acclaimed Showtime series Billions, as well as the political thriller Designated Survivor for ABC and Netflix, having begun his career on Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. On the film side, he sold his script The Virginian about a young George Washington to Warner Bros, and is currently adapting a novel for Charlize Theron at Universal.
Indie studio Sk Global has produced and financed over 100 features, dating back to its origins as Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Most recently, the company unveiled the acclaimed rom-com Anyone But You, a star-making project for Glen Powell, who led the cast opposite Sydney Sweeney. The Sony pic emerged as a sleeper hit upon its December 2023 release, proving that rom-coms can continue to work theatrically as it grossed over $220 million worldwide. Also recently unveiling the acclaimed limited series Thai Cave Rescue, as well as inspirational docs like Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, which just debuted on Netflix, the company is also responsible for such acclaimed titles as Crazy Rich Asians, Hell or High Water and The Place Beyond the Pines, among many others.
Daniels is repped by CAA, Martino Management, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Harris by CAA, Gateway Management, Independent Talent Group in the UK, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern; Simmons by Gersh; and Gunn by WME and Artists First.

Amazon's cancellation of American Rust was brutal considering it had been recently saved from a previous cancelation. American Rust faced cancelations before Amazon picked it up, but low viewership likely led to its demise. Unlikely for American Rust to be saved for season 3 due to previous cancelations and cast commitments.
Amazon's decision to cancel American Rust despite its 78% Rt rating is doubly brutal because of one crucial detail. This series stood out among crime dramas because it took place in Pennsylvania, which is in the heart of the Rust Belt, and thus offered a rare glimpse into small-town life in this area of the United States. This hook, along with a strong cast led by Jeff Daniels, set the series up for success that did not come, and American Rust's season 2 ending included cliffhangers that will no longer be able to be resolved.

American Rust, the gripping crime drama, has faced cancelation once again (per Deadline). Prime Video, after rescuing the series from oblivion, has decided not to renew it for a third season. Despite the show only beginning to navigate its way through a second season, which premiered on Prime Video on March 28, 2024, and was titled American Rust: Broken Justice, the streamers decision not to go through with the renewal seems anticipatory. Especially now that Maura Tierney has been cast as a series regular on NBCs Law & Order.
American Rust debuted on Showtime in September 2021 but before that, it faced several early setbacks. When it finally found a home on the premium cable network and found a star and executive producer in Jeff Daniels, it failed to garner strong ratings and was canceled. Amazon Freevee stepped in to rescue the show in June 2022 and the crime drama eventually migrated to sibling Prime Video,...

American Rust is cancelled after 2 seasons by Prime Video, Season 2 concludes with a cliffhanger, leaving the fate of characters, including Del, unknown. Cast members have moved on, as Maura Tierney joins Law & Order, while Jeff Daniels recently starred in a Netflix miniseries.
American Rust has been cancelled once again after having been rescued by Prime Video for season 2. Created by Dan Futterman, and based on Philipp Meyers debut novel of the same name, the adaptation takes place in a small town. It follows the chief of police Del Harris as he takes on an investigation that finds the son of the woman he loves accused of murder. The American Rust cast includes Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julie Mayorga, Mark Pellegrino, Rob Yang, and Kyle Beltran.
Now, Deadline confirms that Prime Video will not be moving forward with American Rust season 3, as the crime drama has been cancelled after two seasons.

Despite efforts to the contrary, American Rust has sadly solved its last mystery. According to TVLine, the Pennsylvania-set detective series will not be returning for a third season. The series first premiered on Showtime, with Jeff Daniels in the lead role as Detective Del Harris. Since then, the industry has changed significantly with many moving parts that may or may not have impacted the series. Showtime has since merged with Paramount+, but not before American Rust was canceled. It took some time, but Amazon Prime ultimately saved the series. Two years after the cancelation, Amazon put the gripping series on their Freevee platform and rebranded it as American Rust: Broken Justice.

American Rust has been canceled for a second time. Prime Video has opted not to renew the drama starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney for a third season, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes four months after Season 2, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, premiered on the platform and had a quiet run.
The cancellation was foreshadowed by the recent casting of Tierney as a new series regular on NBC’s Law & Order.
American Rust has a long history. It initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it was picked up and aired for one season. The...

“Twisters” is sweeping audiences off their couches and into the theaters.
The standalone follow-up to “Twister” (1996) grossed over $80 million in its first weekend and was the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the disaster film as a ragtag group of storm chasers. Jones plays Kate Carter, a once disaster-seeker turned to corporate weather pro, while Powell plays Tyler Owens, a viral “tornado wrangler.” The two team up with Javi, a longtime friend of Kate’s played by Anthony Ramos, to tackle the biggest twister Oklahoma’s seen in generations.
The cast also features some newcomers but (spoiler alert!) no cameo from Helen Hunt. For the complete “Twisters” cast and character guide, keep reading.

Though specific character details are not yet available, Tierney will play a lieutenant in the season, which premieres on NBC on Oct. 3.

American Rust takes a more sympathetic approach compared to Hillbilly Elegy, avoiding controversy. American Rust focuses on well-crafted storytelling without judging its characters, unlike Hillbilly Elegy. The series portrays the struggles of Rust Belt residents with empathy, creating an emotional impact, although it also received poor reviews.
The crime drama series American Rust follows in the footsteps of Ron Howards film Hillbilly Elegy, yet the two projects may not be as similar as they seem. After Hillbilly Elegys release in 2020, it received harsh criticism from reviewers, many of whom stated that a lack of authenticity prevented the film from being faithful to the memoir it was based on. Though American Rust has also garnered poor reviews, the reason behind it is a bit different, and this is for the better.
Despite an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics' reviews of Hillbilly Elegy early on claimed that the film provided a skewed perspective on poverty.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they will have to consider 107 shows for Best Drama Series. This is down by 56 contenders compared to last year. As was the case in 2023, members may not allow their selections to exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be eight.
2023 Best Drama Series winner “Succession” and six of the seven also-rans are out of the current race because they did not air new episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 qualifying period. This leaves “The Crown” as the only 2023 nominee eligible for an immediate return, which could lead to its second victory here following its first in 2021.
Remember, only eight of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Which do you think will make the cut?

American Rust season 1 stays faithful to the core story but takes creative liberties for a new, compelling narrative. Character names are changed for a fresh perspective, like Bud becoming Del, adding a different dynamic to the show. The show diverges from the book to set up multiple seasons, expanding the world of American Rust for future episodes.
American Rust season 1 is based on the book of the same name by Philipp Meyer, and while there are ways in which the TV show is faithful to the novel's story, there are also noticeable changes. Any good screen adaptation of a book has to take some creative liberties because translating a written story into a visual medium can be difficult. Most of the core features of the story remained, like the main characters and the murder, but other than that, the show took the book and created something entirely new.

The following contains spoilers for A Man in Full Episode 1, "Saddlebags," now streaming on Netflix.
The Netflix miniseries A Man in Full is very much like the world it creates -- stylish, engaging, but ultimately empty. On paper, it deserves to be a smash hit: written and produced by David E. Back when he was finishing “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, Jeff Daniels was ready to leave show business. “I’m done,” he told Jim Carrey. “You can’t stop man,” Carrey said. “You can’t, you’re creative, you’re going to create something, you’ve got to keep creating. That’s what we do!”
These days, Carrey’s off in Hawaii painting. And when Daniels is not acting, he’s writing songs and plays, which he mounts at his Michigan hometown’s Purple Rose Theatre Company. “It’s what keeps me going,” Daniels told me on Zoom. “It keeps me alive. It’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s helped me between the phone calls for the acting jobs. Because you can go insane staring at that phone. They’ll call you when they need you. And so I’ve always battled whatever depression or fear might...

American Rust is set in a fictional town in the Rust Belt of Pennsylvania. Nearly all scenes were filmed in Pittsburgh, with some suburbs used for select shots. Buell symbolizes the decline of the American Dream, making it a crucial element in the series.
A small Rust Belt town plays a significant role in American Rust, but the show itself was all filmed in a bigger city. The crime drama series, created by Dan Futterman, is based on Philipp Meyer's 2009 novel of the same name, which revolves around the decline of the American middle class (and the American Dream) in the early 2000s in a rural town in Pennsylvania. Whereas American Rust undoubtedly shines a light on economic and social problems that several people went through in the late 20th and early 21st century, the show also pulls viewers in with a mystery.

American Rust: Broken Justice is a TV crime drama that straddles a storytelling line. On one hand, the Prime Video drama picks up very close to where Season 1 left off, so there's an incredible amount of serialized drama. On the other, there are new characters and new crimes set up that are meant to push Del Harris and his fellow protagonists forward. That creates an interesting conundrum: how do you keep telling stories that started in the past, while also wanting to look ahead to the future?
Series producers Adam Rapp and Dan Futterman joined Cbr to speak about their storytelling process going into American Rust Season 2. They also gave their thoughts on Philipp Meyer's book and moving away from the novel in the second season. The entirety of American Rust: Broken Justice is now streaming on Prime Video.

In American Rust: Broken Justice, Lee English has her own mystery to solve. While Season 1 introduced Lee through her relationships with her brother Isaac and the complicated Billy Poe, Season 2 of the TV drama focuses more on Lee's professional world. Julie Mayorga's character is working for a company she begins to suspect isn't above board -- and has to ask herself if she wants to expose it.
Mayorga spoke to Cbr about why she was "excited" to reprise her role in American Rust Season 2. She also discussed why the series appeals to her and delved into the challenge she faced in returning to the character. The entire second season is now streaming on Prime Video.
Cbr: How much from the American Rust book did you reference, especially in Season 2, which is unique and separate from the novel?

American Rust features a talented cast portraying characters amidst the economic hardships of the Rust Belt. Showtime series dives into a murder case in a fictional town, highlighting the struggles of the American middle class. Available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, the storyline revolves around a detective investigating a murder involving close connections.

American Rust showrunners Dan Futterman and Adam Rapp finally gave an update on Season 3 of the Amazon Prime Video series, but it is rather discouraging.

The show follows Jeff Daniels' Del Harris, a police chief in Pennsylvania trying to solve multiple murders and figure out how they are connected to a bigger threat.

The following contains spoilers for American Rust: Broken Justice, now streaming on Prime Video.
The second season of American Rust shines an even harsher spotlight on the Poe family. Billy Poe, played by Alex Neustaedter, has been released from prison -- but not before he ended up in a coma. Now Billy is simply trying to get back to a normal life, but he's not entirely sure what normal is.
Billy's father Virgil Poe is portrayed by Mark Pellegrino -- best known as Supernatural's Lucifer. While Virgil isn't the devil, he's certainly not an upstanding human being, either. He seems to have no real ambition of his own, and takes his estranged wife Grace's demand for a divorce as a joke. Both characters have some soul-searching to do, and Cbr spoke to both actors about the roads their characters walk in Season 2.
