Did Tom Hanks suffer majorly because of extreme weight changes for his roles? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Back in 2013, the Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks revealed to Daily Mail that his drastic transformations could have contributed to his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. “The gaining and the losing of weight may have had something to do with it because you eat so much bad food and you don’t exercise when you’re heavy,” he admitted at the London Film Festival while promoting Captain Phillips.
Hanks had a history of yo-yo dieting for roles. In Philadelphia, he shed pounds to portray a lawyer battling AIDS. For Cast Away, he lost nearly 50 pounds to play a man stranded on a deserted island convincingly. The transformations were striking, but they weren’t without consequences.

Ben Affleck is set to embark on his next directorial project soon, doing double duty by starring in the film as well. An exclusive new report from Deadline reveals that his long-in-development Netflix thriller Animals is set to begin production soon, with Los Angeles set to serve as the location for filming as soon as the rest of the cast for the movie is rounded out. Affleck originally intended for his long-time collaborator Matt Damon to star in the project, but the constant moving of dates no longer makes the actor a viable option. Instead, Affleck has found his Matt Damon replacement... in himself.
Aside from Affleck's starring role in Animals alongside his directing duties, Deadline has also reported that Gillian Anderson has joined the project as well. However, the capacity of her role is yet unknown. Animals will be based on a script written by Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray,...

Ben Affleck is set to star in his upcoming Netflix thriller “Animals,” which he’s also directing. His longtime friend Matt Damon was originally slated to lead the film but had to depart due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic “The Odyssey.”
“Animals” is aiming to begin production in Los Angeles this April, according to Deadline, who first reported the casting shakeup. Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” is expected to commence shooting in various global locations later in February.
Billy Ray, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Captain Phillips,” “The Hunger Games” and AMC Theatres’ iconic Nicole Kidman ad, is penning the screenplay with Connor McIntyre. The crime thriller reportedly follows a mayoral candidate whose child is kidnapped.
Though Damon won’t appear in “Animals,” he’s remaining on the project as a producer with Affleck through their company Artists Equity, along with executive Dani Bernfeld. Additional producers are Brad Weston and Collin Creighton of MakeReady,...

Tom Hanks' 2013 movie Captain Phillips was based on a true story, and it was surprisingly accurate about what actually happened during the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama. Captain Phillips depicted the true story of the 2009 hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates. Hanks played the titular Richard Phillips, and Captain Phillips even included one of Hanks' best scenes ever. Captain Phillips is a very good movie, but it owes much of its acclaim to the true story behind it.
Captain Phillips is an intense thriller, and much of that tension comes from the true story. In April 2009, the Maersk Alabama was hijacked by Somali pirates. Though they left the ship on the same day, they took Phillips hostage in a small lifeboat for five days. From abuse at the hands of his kidnappers to the cramped and hot conditions of the lifeboat, Richard Phillips had a terrible experience.

After a glorious run of iconic performances and blockbuster hits in the 1990s, Tom Hanks carried along like the consistent and lovable movie star that he has been since his first screen appearance. Hanks became such a reliable force in movies that we all started to take him for granted. He may not be the familiar face of blockbusters like he used to be with Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan, but Hanks has arguably progressed as a dramatic performer as he's aged into his 60s. It was during the 2010s when Hanks cemented himself as "America's Dad." Starring in countless "dad" movies based around true stories in the last decade, this phase of Hanks' career peaked with the release of Captain Phillips, which features one of his most alluring performances, but not everyone, including the Academy Awards, seems to recognize that fact.

"Oppenheimer" taking home Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars ceremony was more unusual than you might realize. As much as a WWII-era biopic about a bunch of white guys talking solemnly about Very Important Things qualifies as the ultimate dad movie, Christopher Nolan's film was also the first dyed-in-the-wool blockbuster to win Best Picture in two decades. Just as notably (but more relevant to our purposes here), "Oppenheimer" marked only the second time in that same period that Universal snagged the top prize at the Academy's annual awards show.
Take a step back and you'll notice that the biggest and oldest Hollywood studios, in general, began to win fewer and fewer Best Picture Oscars as the first quarter of the 21st century rolled along. Rather, this was the era in which the likes of indie-style producers and distributors such as Searchlight Pictures, A24, and Neon emerged as major players in the sometimes fun,...

For all the love his fictional characters have received, Tom Hanks has spent much of his career playing real American heroes, whether it be the courageous Captain Sully Sullenberger in Sully or the ray of sunshine that was Fred Rodgers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. As 2025 gets underway, one of his acclaimed features that falls into this category has just arrived on Prime Video - Captain Phillips. The Oscar-nominated 2013 biopic places Hanks in the shoes of Richard Phillips, the captain of the Maersk Alabama container ship who, on one unexpected day in 2009, was confronted with the threat of Somali pirates. It takes inspiration from Phillips's novel recounting the incident with Stephan Talty, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, with director Paul Greengrass bringing the story to life.

When it came time to choose a name for our first child, my husband and I had a list of one.
A couple of years before her birth, we’d been on an especially good date to see an Agnès Varda film in repertory; the protagonist’s style, wit and ultimate resilience appealed to us as much as Varda’s own story as a pathbreaking woman in the French New Wave did. We’d seen Varda’s documentary “Faces Places” at New York’s Quad Cinema just a week prior to seeing “Cléo From 5 to 7” at the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn, and, especially in the spring of 2020, the double bill sat lodged in our minds. Cleo D’Addario turned 4 this past May.

Paul Greengrass makes harrowing movies. He established this with his gripping 2002 Northern Ireland docudrama "Bloody Sunday," which was his springboard to Hollywood, where he turned the Jason Bourne franchise into a master class in jittery, handheld, shoot-for-the-edit cinema. These successes for Universal compelled the studio to take a managed $15 million risk on Greengrass' "United 93," his masterful staging of the heroic events that transpired on the fourth hijacked plane, which thankfully did not reach its target, on 9/11. It's his best film to date, but one that's also way too intense for many people to endure -- which can also be said of his biographical thriller "Captain Phillips."
The account of Somali pirates hijacking the shipping vessel Maersk Alabama in 2009 stars Tom Hanks as the title skipper who managed to engineer the rescue of himself and his crew from the ship. It's shot in Greengrass' trademark docudrama style, which means a lot of shaky cameras,...

Tom Hanks has been involved in some of the most beloved and highest-grossing movies of the past few decades, cementing himself as one of Hollywoods biggest draws and most recognizable names. However, picking the highest-rated movies out of the stars catalog isnt as easy as one might think, and the results certainly arent as obvious as expected. Tom Hanks best movies are those that allow the actor to delve into his most charming, charismatic performances - and four specific films stand out brighter than most.

Tom Hanks is a two-time Oscar-winner for his roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and he's been nominated four more times dating back to 1989 and as recently as 2020. Hanks has had several movies streaming on Netflix for the last few months, most of which are unfortunately being dumped at the start of November. Netflix has officially announced that The Circle and The Terminal will leave the platform on October 31, with A Man Called Otto hanging around for a week longer, leaving on November 5 before heading to Hulu. The only remaining Tom Hanks movie on Netflix will be Captain Phillips, the 2013 biopic that also stars Catherine Keener and currently sits at a 93% score from critics and an 89% rating from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

A Stephen King adaptation has just found new life. The author's 2022 book "Fairy Tale" was originally eyed as a feature film. Now though? It's being retooled as a TV show by the folks at A24. This information comes courtesy of the folks at Deadline, who've revealed that Paul Greengrass is expected to be involved as a director and producer. Peter Rice ("Saturday Night") is also on board as an executive producer.
What's interesting here is that Greengrass was originally attached to direct "Fairy Tale" as a movie when he won the rights to the novel in 2022. While the new report notes that Greengrass' deal has not closed yet, it seems like things are headed in that direction. So, it appears as though the Oscar-nominee has really tuned into the material and wants in on the action, be it on the big or small screen.

Tom Hanks helped pay for a pivotal scene in Forrest Gump, with the movie going on to greatly influence his career. With a filmography that already included A League of Their Own, Big, Sleepless in Seattle, and Philadelphia, Hanks was already a well-known and well-regarded actor before Forrest Gump's 1994 release. The movie was still a significant moment in Hanks' career, though, earning him his third Academy Award nomination and his second win.
Hanks has since gone on to star in a number of other critically acclaimed movies, including Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, Pixar's Toy Story franchise, Cast Away, Catch Me if You Can, and Captain Phillips. As prolific as his career has been, Forrest Gump still remains one of Hank's best movies and most defining roles. Andy Muschietti's mega-blockbuster adaptation of "It" kicked off a new boom of Stephen King adaptations when it hit theaters in 2017, but if we were in a boom, is it safe to say we've now hit a bust? There are still tons of new King adaptations coming (I'm excited to see Osgood Perkins' take on "The Monkey" and Bryan Fuller's horned-up "Christine" update), but the massive hits have slowed down (remember "Firestarter?"), and one major adaptation, Warner Bros' "'Salem's Lot," is only now coming out after years of sitting on the shelf.
The works of Stephen King will always continue to be rich and entertaining, whether they're dominating the pop cultural zeitgeist or not. But if one title exemplifies the fickleness of the recent King adaptation boom, it's "Castle Rock," a wonderfully complicated, delightfully mysterious King-adjacent series that unceremoniously died on the vine at Hulu despite delivering two great seasons of television.

Paul Greengrass may no longer be a journalist, but he has successfully brought a journalistic style to both action films and historical dramas over his career. The filmmaker is best known for his hand-held, cinéma vérité style where the camera moves like a cameraman embedded in the scene, struggling to capture real events. His style is often imitated, though few are able to match the subtly precise way that Greengrass constructs his sequences through quick cutting and frenetic camerawork. Despite being famous for a specific filmmaking technique, Greengrass’ filmography is still quite diverse, which should be apparent in the gallery below.
He began his career working for the audacious British current affairs program “World in Action.” He transitioned to fiction filmmaking with a series of TV movies based on historical events. His breakout hit was the historical drama “Bloody Sunday,” chronicling the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings. Greengrass was then hired to...

While some viewers may have trouble relating to the overabundance of comic book films released every year, stories that at least claim to be somewhat real may seem more inviting. Focusing on critical historical figures, such as Napoleon or Malcolm X, is one way to get attention; however, theres also the potential to gauge interest based on stories that were only recently in the news cycle. This was the case with Paul Greengrass 2013 film Captain Phillips, which was based on the hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama in 2009 by Somali Pirates.

Tom Hanks was seriously snubbed at the Oscars in 2014, particularly for "Captain Phillips" and "Saving Mr. Banks." Despite critical and financial success, these movies didn't receive Oscar nominations. Hanks' acting abilities sometimes go unacknowledged by the Academy Awards, but his fans appreciate his talents.
Tom Hanks has had a wildly successful acting career, but one of his best movies that was just added to Netflix highlights just how badly he was snubbed at the 2014 Academy Awards. Hanks has had a bit of good fortune with the Oscars: he's been nominated six times, with five of those nominations being for Best Actor. He also won the Best Actor Oscar twice in a row, for 1994's Philadelphia and 1995's Forrest Gump. All of Tom Hanks' best movies have been successful, usually both financially and critically, but some of them went underappreciated at the Oscars.

As the Academy prepares to debut an award for casting directors at the 2026 Oscars, the timing was right for Francine Maisler to travel this week to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic for a tribute organized by its Industry Days office. Taking the stage for a Kviff Talk with her associate Molly Rose, the renowned casting director admitted she had initially been reluctant to enter the limelight. “Coming here is special for me, because I tend to avoid these things. I’m hired to be behind the camera, not in front.”
Despite such modesty, Maisler had no trouble holding the room for nearly 90 minutes, reflecting not only on her own illustrious career path but praising the legions of actors she has worked with for the last 30-odd years. She seemed especially energized by Lady Gaga, having recently seen a cut of Todd Phillips’ heavily anticipated DC sequel Joker: Folie À Deux,...

Francine Maisler, longtime collaborator with Aaron Sorkin and Steven Soderbergh and casting director for “The Revenant,” “The Big Short,” “Little Women,” “Dune” and “The Bikeriders,” says she’s always been obsessed with performance.
“I’m always looking and seeing and my eye is taken with things,” she says.
“I love the theater,” she told an audience at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this week, recalling being “mesmerized” by actors onstage long before she had the inkling to follow her career path.
Sorkin has said, “Francine has an eye for talent like no one I’ve ever met,” to which Maisler jokes, “We fight all the time.”

When the phrase "based on a true story" comes up just before a movie begins, a certain excitement radiates through the audience. Viewers understand that what they see happening on the screen to actors is, in some form or fashion, a real-life telling of what happened to actual people. It is an exhilarating way to learn about history and understand situations you may otherwise never witness. However, because the medium used is a movie rather than a documentary, some creative liberties have likely occurred.
Some people are portrayed as better, nicer, or more heroic individuals. Some circumstances are made out to be scarier or more action-packed. Captain Phillips is a thrilling retelling of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, but it minimized how long the hostage situation lasted. The crew of the Maersk Alabama was held hostage for a day before the pirates left, while Captain Phillips was held for five days in total after the pirates took him on the lifeboat. The 20 crew members and Captain Phillips were mostly unharmed, but likely faced significant trauma.
Captain Phillips is a fairly accurate retelling of the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, but the movie doesn't make it clear how long Richard Phillips and the ship's crew were held hostage by the Somali pirates. The true story of Captain Phillips saw Somali pirates hijack an American ship for the first time in almost 200 years. By the end of Captain Phillips, the crew of the Maersk Alabama and Captain Phillips made it out mostly unscathed, but they still had to endure a torturous experience.

Tom Hanks' movie Captain Phillips is based on the memoir of Captain Richard Phillips titled A Captain's Duty. Phillips retired from his maritime career in 2014 and now speaks publicly about his experience.

Abduwali Muse was the only surviving pirate of the Maersk Alabama hijacking. Muse pled guilty to six felony charges and was sentenced to 405 months, or nearly 34 years, in federal prison. Muse is currently serving his 33-year sentence in a federal prison and will be released in 2038 with five years of supervised release.
Abduwali Muse was a main focus of Captain Phillips, but the movie never explained what happened to the pirate after the hijacking. Axel Foley returning to Beverly Hills, an animated feature from former Studio Ghibli talent, a jaw-dropping doc about love-struck “rooftoppers” and final seasons from three big shows — a Spanish teen drama, a viking saga and Daniel Larusso’s last hurrah — are some of the highlights on Netflix in July.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix’s high profile feature release for this month, arrives on July 3. The fourth installment in the Eddie Murphy-led action-comedy franchise, sees Detroit detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills, thirty years after his last visit. This time, Foley must team up with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — when his daughter’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened. Franchise fans will be happy to see regulars Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot) make appearances and series newcomer Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.

Four of Tom Hanks last seven major roles have ended up on streaming services – yet have the films been pretty much forgotten already?
In February of 2023, we got something of an endangered species: a surprisingly positive box office story. That a movie had overperformed against fairly gloomy expectations, and turned into a success on the quiet.
That film was A Man Called Otto, released by Sony and directed by Marc Forster. An English-language remake of Oscar-winning Swedish film A Man Called Ove, what was interesting about the movie’s success is it’s the kind of film that’s apparently not supposed to work in cinemas. Aimed at an older audience, without showboaty effects or Roman numerals, and with a fairly morose central character: this is the stuff that streaming services want to devour.
But Sony gambled, put it into cinemas, and took home over $100m worldwide. That’s not Spider-Man money obviously,...

Renowned for his adaptability in a multitude of genres from comedy, romance, science fiction to war dramas, Tom Hanks previously revealed his aspiration to join the cast of a Batman film. Given the expansive realms within the DC universe, the possibility of Hanks realizing this dream has heightened, hinting at an intriguing evolution in his professional journey.
During an interview with On Demand Entertainment a decade ago to promote “Captain Phillips,” Tom Hanks discussed his absence from major superhero films and whether it was intentional. Hanks shared that although he hadn’t been approached for such roles, he had a keen interest in the genre, especially in playing a villain, preferably a Batman adversary, as he preferred not to portray characters guiding the heroes.

Despite Hanks' desire to be in superhero movies, he hasn't been cast in one yet, but has expressed interest in playing a Batman villain. Hanks could play characters like Hugo Strange or Ventriloquist from Batman's universe. With multiple Batman franchises active, now is the perfect time to fulfill Hanks' wish and cast him in a superhero movie.
Tom Hanks hasnt made a superhero movie yet, but its finally time for him to fulfill his wish to make a Batman movie. Despite the superhero genre having a massive boost in the last decade and more, many popular and beloved actors still havent been part of a superhero movie. The reasons for this vary depending on the actor, as some have been quite open about their dislike and disinterest in superhero movies, while others havent had the chance to join a superhero project in a role that interests them.

Tom Hanks has played a hero multiple times, whether in Captain Phillips or as Woody from Toy Story. Each time, he’s managed to bring something new and meaningful to the idea of being a hero. Thus, when Clint Eastwood approached Tom Hanks, proposing that he take on the role of Sully, the real-life hero who safely landed a plane on the Hudson River in 2009, Hanks found himself pausing before making a decision, in the 2016 film.
