There’s no shortage of movies to stream on Netflix. Any subscriber that logs onto the platform these days will likely see a bunch of new releases, gruesome horror films, and sweet rom-coms. But with so many big, flashy studio films and Netflix originals to choose from, it can be difficult for the indie films that flood the streamer to stand out.

For sure, a place in Netflix’s library can be a great opportunity for independent cinema to find an audience it otherwise wouldn’t reach in theaters or on television. But for all the big starry auteur films that Netflix picks up and turns into major awards contenders (see “Marriage Story” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”), there’s an under-the-radar, overlooked pick that doesn’t have the names or prestige attached to it, and feels destined to serve as mere library filler as people look for the films they do know.

Exclusive: Emily the Criminal Independent Spirit Best Supporting nominee Theo Rossi is set to star in Vincent Grashaw’s biopic, Bruton, about Bryan Bruton, who was sentenced to a decade in a Florida prison for an unintended crime.

Bruton was charged in the early 2000s for a manslaughter conviction from a fatal hit and run in Jacksonville, Fl. The movie will follow Bruton’s journey through the correctional system.

In the wake of his release and moving to California, Bruton turned to making the YouTube video series Bryan Bruton Crazy Prison Stories. Bruton’s videos canvases life in the Florida prison system from, from how inmates obtain and conceal drugs, alcohol and weapons to cutting the window out of one’s jail cell.

Grashaw also wrote the screenplay. Bruton recently wrapped production in Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi.

Theo Rossi has joined The Saviors, a darkly comedic thriller that also stars Adam Scott and Danielle Deadwyler (Carry-On, The Piano Lesson).

The film centers around a suburban couple whose life spirals out of control when they rent their garage to mysterious tenants.

Highway 10, Invention Studios and Great Scott Productions are producing. Kevin Hamedani directed from a script he co-wrote with Travis Betz that was featured on the 2018 Black List. Production in Los Angeles recently wrapped after beginning in December.

Rossi appeared in Netflix’s Carry-On alongside Deadwyler and Taron Edgerton and also in HBO’s The Penguin as Dr. Julian Rush. He starred opposite Aubrey Plaza in Emily the Criminal and is known for roles in Marvel’s Luke Cage, Sons of Anarchy and Army of the Dead.

One of the best American film producers of the last forty years died a few months ago. Lynda Obst, who began her film career in the 1980s and went on to produce more than a dozen major feature films, was 74. I had the pleasure of getting to know her at a film festival back in the mid-‘90s. She had just released the blockbuster comedy Sleepless in Seattle and was in the final stages of getting Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi film Contact across the finish line.

Ms. Obst was very kind to me when discussing a small coming-of-age story I had written about competitive kayaking, but put an end to any dreams I may have had about attracting her involvement in the project by saying, “This is a two-million-dollar movie. I can’t even make a movie today for under fifty million.”

For context, this is back when fifty million was considered a lot of money.

Following the rollout of their more traditional holiday fare, Netflix is heading into “Die Hard” territory with the release of their Christmas-set action movie “Carry-On” — and it’s got a cast full of familiar faces.

Directed by “The Shallows” and “Non-Stop” filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, the film follows a Tsa agent and wannabe cop who gets his chance to bring down the bad guys when a mysterious traveler blackmails him to get a dangerous package through airport security.

Per Deadline, it's been revealed that Hellboy actor Ron Perlman has joined the cast of the upcoming thriller Come With Me. This follows the previous casting of Theo Rossi, one of Perlman's Sons of Anarchy co-stars, in the lead role. In Sons of Anarchy, Perlman Clarence "Clay" Morrow alongside Rossi as Juan Carlos "Juice" Ortiz. The actors co-starred on the show until Clay's death in 2013, a year before the series ended its seven-season run.

My Old Ass is an Aubrey Plaza comedy that tells the story of Elliott, a young woman who has to face her "old ass," 39-year-old self during a crazy trip on mushrooms. In addition to Aubrey Plaza, My Old Ass features a leading cast including Maisy Stella, Percy Hynes White, Maddie Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, Maria Dizzia, and Seth Isaac Johnson. It is the sophomore feature from Megan Park, who also directed 2021's The Fallout.

Exclusive: Black Box Management has signed Nick August-Perna, the filmmaker behind the buzzy true crime doc Tell Them You Love Me, which topped Netflix’s film charts in its February debut.

Hitting #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies, the film tells the true story of Anna Stubblefield, an esteemed professor involved in a controversial affair with Derrick Johnson, a non-verbal man with cerebral palsy. Their relationship eventually led to a criminal trial challenging perceptions of disability and nature of consent.

Black Box and August-Perna are teaming to produce a scripted remake of the film, the hope being to replica the success of much-discussed true-crime projects like I, Tonya, The Act, and The Girl from Plainville.

In a statement to Deadline, Black Box’s founding partners Mike Dill and Lowell Shapiro shared, “When we first saw Nick’s incredible film Tell Them You Love Me, we knew that he was someone we had to represent.

Colin Farrell is ushering in the next chapter of “The Batman” saga at Warner Bros.

The Oscar-nominated actor leads Max series “The Penguin” as the newly-minted mob boss Oz Cobb — aka “The Penguin” — in the eight-episode limited series.

The show is set in the Gotham City cinematic universe created by filmmaker Matt Reeves in “The Batman,” which is getting its own film sequel. “The Penguin” rounds out the mob crew alluded to in the film, with Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone, the daughter of John Turturro’s late character Carmine Falcone. The Falcone crime family also includes Scott Cohen and Michael Zegen, whose character Alberto becomes the Holiday Killer in the “Batman” comics.

Clancy Brown plays Gotham City mafia head Salvatore Maroni, a character who was formerly portrayed by Eric Roberts in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”

Now Huntington has gone into production, and Deadline has revealed that the cast also includes Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion), Topher Grace (That 70s Show), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), and Raff Law (Masters of the Air). Vertical has acquired Conor Soucy’s directorial debut “Dead Whisper” and will debut it in select theaters on July 5, and on AppleTV and Prime Video, beginning July 9.

The horror/thriller film “Dead Whisper” stars Samuel Dunning (“Tim Travers and the Time Travelers Paradox”) and marks the first on-screen role for Rob Evan, whose previous credits include Broadway’s “Les Misérables,” and “Jekyll & Hyde.” The rest of the cast’s ensemble includes Tana Sirois, Samantha Hill, Codey Gillum, Chris Goodwin, Dhane Ross, Hester Wilkinson and Bruce Winant.

According to an official logline, the film “follows Elliot Campbell, (Dunning) a Cape Cod lawyer drawn to a mysterious island, where he faces the temptation of reuniting with his dead daughter at the peril of his soul.”

The film is produced by Conor Soucy, Birk Gran and Ben Grant. The cinematography is also by Grant and a live orchestral score is by Nikhil Koparkar.

Following announcements of Ed Harris and Margaret Qualley joining the cast of Glen Powells Huntington, it seems the upcoming films cast has further found its footing through the addition of Glass Onions Jessica Henwick. Huntington, which is being backed by productions companies Studiocanal and A24, is also confirmed to star Topher Grace, Raff Law, and Zach Woods, with John Patton Ford set to direct. After writing and directing his feature debut Emily the Criminal, Huntington will mark Fords second stab at directing a full-length film.

Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert have set up the animated comedy series “Kevin” at Amazon’s Prime Video, Variety has learned.

Plaza and Wengert are co-writers and executive producers on the series, with Wengert also serving as showrunner. Dan Murphy will also executive produce. The series is produced by animation Titmouse, Plaza and Murphy’s Evil Hag Productions, and Amazon MGM Studios.

The official logline for the series states that it is about “a life-long housecat who decides that he doesn’t want to live with people anymore. Loosely inspired by a real break-up and the cat caught in the middle, Kevin dares to ask himself, “Is there a world where I don’t do the owner thing and am just… single for the rest of my life?”

Aubrey Plaza is expanding her TV empire with an “Emily The Criminal” series.

The actress who led the 2022 Sundance breakout crime thriller will executive produce a series adaptation of John Patton Ford’s film for Legendary Television, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. She won’t however star in the new series.

“Emily The Criminal” was written and directed by John Patton Ford, who will also executive produce the series adaptation. Ford will also direct the show.

The original film followed Emily (Plaza) who tries to pay off her student debt by working as a “dummy shopper” and purchasing goods with stolen credit cards. The scheme is run by Youcef (Theo Rossi), who becomes entangled with Emily.

Here’s a fun announcement to lighten up your Thursday morning. A24 and StudioCanal have unveiled a new project that is set to release at an unspecified point in the future. The film is called Huntington and is being described as a “raucous revenge thriller” about the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves. An early summer shoot is being planned for the film.

The core cast for this one looks promising. Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) are set to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford, and Deadline reports that A24 has just boarded the project to handle its domestic distribution.

Drawing inspiration from the 1949 crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, Huntington will see Powell taking on the role of Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves. Kind Hearts and Coronets told the following story: When Louis D’Ascoyne Mazzini, who hails from a royal family, is denied dukedom, he plans to kill all the potential threats in his way.

Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired U.S. distribution rights to “Lee,” a biopic about American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller that stars Oscar winner Kate Winslet.

“Lee” is the feature directorial debut of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Ellen Kuras, who previously worked with Winslet on “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” The film’s ensemble includes “The Crown” breakout Josh O’Connor, Oscar-nominated “To Leslie” star Andrea Riseborough, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Andy Samberg, “Big Little Lies” star Alexander Skarsgård, and Oscar-winning “La Vie en Rose” star Marion Cotillard. Roadside Attractions and Vertical will release the film theatrically on Sept. 20.

“Lee” debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but it took time for a sale to be hammered out. The film follows Miller’s personal and professional life as she becomes a top photographer during the tumult of World War II. “Lee” is written by Liz Hannah, Marion Hume and John Collee.

Exclusive: With Anyone But You having just crossed $100M at the global box office and Top Gun 3 chatter lighting up the internet, Hollywood man of the moment Glen Powell has found his next project in the shape of thriller Huntington from Emily The Criminal writer-director John Patton Ford.

As we revealed last year, Euro studio Studiocanal and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri producer Blueprint are behind the project, which has now attracted Green Book and Spotlight outfit Participant as co-financier with Studiocanal.

We understand A24 is close to finalizing a domestic deal, though none of the parties could confirm at time of going to press.

Cinephiles have come to expect (and love) Obama’s regular lists of films, music and books, which are generally released come awards time. Last year his list included the likes of “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Emily the Criminal” and director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King.

Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired the U.S. rights to the historical thriller “Firebrand,” which will open in theaters on June 21. Based on the historical novel “Queen’s Gambit” by Elizabeth Fremantle, the film stars Alicia Vikander and Jude Law and is directed by Karim Aïnouz.

“Firebrand” follows “legendary Queen of England, Katherine Parr, and her quest to survive the perilous last months in the life of her ailing and abusive husband, Henry VIII,” per the release. The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, Sam Riley, Simon Russell Beale and Erin Doherty. Gabrielle Tana and Carolyn Marks Blackwood produce the film, which played competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The story is that of a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations begin turning against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) — their most brilliant and rebellious operative — out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.

Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment announced it has acquired worldwide rights and will be launching sales on the sci-fi thriller Site at the upcoming American Film Market in November. The gripping and thought-provoking film is written and directed by the award-winning Jason Eric Perlman, who was recently named #4 in LA Weekly’s “Top 10 Entertainment Professionals to Watch in 2023.” His debut feature Threshold was released by Sony Pictures after a decorated festival run in 2017.

Desperate for answers, Neil enlists Naomi (Miki Ishikawa) to help him find the facility’s last surviving scientist. Ultimately, Neil awakens to a new redemptive responsibility, both within his own family and the greater society around him.

Parks and Recreation vet Aubrey Plaza confirmed that she previously auditioned for one of the roles in 2018’s Deadpool 2.

Before signing on to Disney+’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries series, Plaza was nearly cast in another high-profile Marvel project. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Plaza admitted that her failed Deadpool 2 audition was probably the one that she’s the most disappointed in out of all the roles she wanted to get but didn’t. She explained that she wasn’t in a good condition when she did her audition for the Ryan Reynolds-led superhero sequel, since her focus was split with another project she’s filming at the time. Coincidentally, the said project was FX’s Legion, a TV adaptation centered around an X-Men character.
