There’s no shortage of movies to stream on Netflix. Any subscriber that logs onto the platform these days will likely see a bunch of new releases, gruesome horror films, and sweet rom-coms. But with so many big, flashy studio films and Netflix originals to choose from, it can be difficult for the indie films that flood the streamer to stand out.
For sure, a place in Netflix’s library can be a great opportunity for independent cinema to find an audience it otherwise wouldn’t reach in theaters or on television. But for all the big starry auteur films that Netflix picks up and turns into major awards contenders (see “Marriage Story” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”), there’s an under-the-radar, overlooked pick that doesn’t have the names or prestige attached to it, and feels destined to serve as mere library filler as people look for the films they do know.

Aubrey Plaza first came to prominence when she played April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation. The show saw her play a tech-savvy intern in the Parks department led by Amy Pohler’s Leslie Knope. Plaza was paired up with Chris Pratt’s Andy and the series saw them become one of the most beloved couples on TV.
What made Plaza stand out from other characters in the series was her deadpan demeanor. Not many could pull off such a part and it is mostly thanks to Plaza’s personality in real life. The actress mentioned that though she is not exactly like April in reality, the perception of that has helped her in exploring different parts.

Though we weren't aware of this until very recently, there's been growing online support for Brandon Sklenar to play the Dark Knight in the upcoming Dcu The Brave and the Bold Movie, and the fan campaign was recently given a major boost thanks to the actor's It Ends With Us co-star Blake Lively sharing her endorsement.
Now, Sklenar has liked and commented on some fan-art depicting him as the Caped Crusader.
Despite speculation that The Batman star Robert Pattinson could end up jumping to the Dcu to play the legendary Gotham City vigilante in The Brave and the Bold, director Andy Muschietti confirmed that a new actor will be cast as the hero during a recent interview.
"As everyone knows, the Batman featured in The Brave and the Bold will belong to the new DC universe. It’s quite obvious that Matt Reeves’ Batman is not part of this new universe.

Aubrey Plaza is best known for her dry humor and comedic performances in titles like Parks & Recreation, but her 2024 releases are a great reminder to check out a dark thriller titled Emily the Criminal. 2024 was a big year for Plaza. Not only did she appear in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, but she also portrayed Rio (aka Death) in Agatha All Along, marking her MCU debut. The show based on Agatha Harkness was one of Disney+'s more emotional releases, with Rio's presence as Death adding a grim element to the MCU entry.
Plaza also appeared in My Old Ass as the older version of the main character for a very unorthodox coming-of-age tale. One of the best American film producers of the last forty years died a few months ago. Lynda Obst, who began her film career in the 1980s and went on to produce more than a dozen major feature films, was 74. I had the pleasure of getting to know her at a film festival back in the mid-‘90s. She had just released the blockbuster comedy Sleepless in Seattle and was in the final stages of getting Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi film Contact across the finish line.
Ms. Obst was very kind to me when discussing a small coming-of-age story I had written about competitive kayaking, but put an end to any dreams I may have had about attracting her involvement in the project by saying, “This is a two-million-dollar movie. I can’t even make a movie today for under fifty million.”
For context, this is back when fifty million was considered a lot of money.

Several new filmmakers jumped out as promising voices: Cooper Raiff with “Cha Cha Smooth,” Nikyatu Jusu with “Nanny,” and Julian Higgins with “God’s Country.” But arguably, the film that popped the most, perhaps because of its second life on Netflix and streaming services, was John Patton Ford’s “Emily The Criminal” starring Aubrey Plaza.

An adaptation of the same-name novel by former FBI agent Paul Lindsay — who used the pen name Noah Boyd — the film also stars Clifton Collins Jr. (Westworld), Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), and Ilfenesh Hadera (Billions). The story is that of a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations begin turning against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) — their most brilliant and rebellious operative — out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.

Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment announced it has acquired worldwide rights and will be launching sales on the sci-fi thriller Site at the upcoming American Film Market in November. The gripping and thought-provoking film is written and directed by the award-winning Jason Eric Perlman, who was recently named #4 in LA Weekly’s “Top 10 Entertainment Professionals to Watch in 2023.” His debut feature Threshold was released by Sony Pictures after a decorated festival run in 2017.
Blue Fox Entertainment is handling worldwide sales and will preview first look footage of the film for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). Blue Fox Entertainment’s US distribution division is planning a theatrical release for the film.
The film stars Jake McLaughlin, Arielle Kebbel, Theo Rossi, and Miki Ishikawa, and Yoson An.
In Site, Neil (Jake McLaughlin) experiences an inexplicable time distortion in an abandoned military test site while inspecting it with his business partner Garrison (Theo Rossi). Soon, Neil is having repeated traumatic flashes back to a WWII prison camp in China called Unit 731, which somehow holds the thread to his own unraveling present. Neil begins to realize that the past lives and events in this place of unspeakable brutality seem to mirror his own trauma with his son Wiley and his wife Elena (Arielle Kebbel). Desperate for answers, Neil enlists Naomi (Miki Ishikawa) to help him find the facility’s last surviving scientist. Ultimately, Neil awakens to a new redemptive responsibility, both within his own family and the greater society around him.
Site is produced by publicist and entrepreneur Benjamin Cooke, Sundance alum, Kelly Hayes, international businesswoman, Yvonne Supangkat, and Jason Eric Perlman.
Blue Fox Entertainment’s James Huntsman said, “Audiences are hungry for high quality science fiction thrillers, which have been scarce in the market recently. With Site, Jason and his talented cast and crew have created an exciting journey that has something relevant to say beneath the surface of the film.”
Director Jason Eric Perlman said, “We are thrilled to have this film beginning its journey in the viewing world. In this time of such unthinkable conflicts I believe it’s vital that creativity explores the interconnectedness of mankind, as well as the atrocities we are capable of inflicting upon one another. Site is intent upon doing both, but with the philosophical imperative that if we ignore history, or the darkness within each of us, we are doomed to repeat the same traumas over and over.
It has been an honor to work with our incredibly talented cast in bringing this story to life, and their commitment to the material elevates it to a remarkable plane. Our visionary crew is also to be credited with what I believe we’ve achieved. The cinematography of Eunah Lee and the brilliant production design of Gabor Norman were integral in the telling of this story to full potential. We are excited to team now with Blue Fox in launching this film into the world.”...

Parks and Recreation vet Aubrey Plaza confirmed that she previously auditioned for one of the roles in 2018’s Deadpool 2.
Before signing on to Disney+’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries series, Plaza was nearly cast in another high-profile Marvel project. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Plaza admitted that her failed Deadpool 2 audition was probably the one that she’s the most disappointed in out of all the roles she wanted to get but didn’t. She explained that she wasn’t in a good condition when she did her audition for the Ryan Reynolds-led superhero sequel, since her focus was split with another project she’s filming at the time. Coincidentally, the said project was FX’s Legion, a TV adaptation centered around an X-Men character.

Theo Rossi hints at a new Sons of Anarchy project that may reunite him with Charlie Hunnam and the rest of the former cast. While the characters of Juice and Jax Teller died in the original series, there are still ways for them to make a triumphant return. Charlie Hunnam has mentioned a separate Sons of Anarchy spinoff idea that doesn't involve Jax Teller, indicating that there are multiple projects in the works for the Sons of Anarchy universe.
Theo Rossi, who played biker Juice Ortiz in the hit series Sons of Anarchy, seemingly teased a new Sons of Anarchy project that will see him reunited with series star Charlie Hunnam. Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy follows the criminal exploits of the titular outlaw motorcycle gang as they operate out of a fictional town in California’s Central Valley.
