Sean Bean will always be known for his role as Ned Stark in the first season of Game of Thrones, but before he ever suited up as a leader in the North, he teamed up with a Harry Potter star for a medieval horror thriller that’s climbing streaming charts. Bean stars alongside Eddie Redmayne in Black Death, the 2010 folk horror film set during the bubonic plague and following a young monk who is tasked with learning the truth about the carnage being wrought in a small village. Black Death premiered on Max at the start of the month, and the film has snuck into the #10 spot on the streamer’s rankings. Gladiator II featured some action sequences director Ridley Scott wanted to film for the original movie. While he may have had new digital tools to use in the sequel, he still favored practical sets and effects.
Joseph Quinn was floored by the scale of Gladiator II's outdoor sets. Speaking to Cbr, he said it was a privilege to share Scott's vision for the film, which was shot in Malta, Morocco, and other locations using practical sets. "Working with Ridley was incredible. He was a very visual director," he asserted. "It felt like old Hollywood. All the sets were built there.I made sure to get my family out there to witness it." Quinn played one of the film's twin emperors, who enjoyed the best seats at the gladiatorial events.

For many, Gladiator II, released in November 2024, failed to meet the expectations set by its 2000 predecessor. A legacy sequel that seemed like a slam dunk turned out to be a misguided and unfocused defeat inside the Colosseum for director Ridley Scott. However, anyone who has been paying attention to Scott's filmography as of late should not have been surprised by the film's tonal imbalance and off-kilter pacing. Now 87 years old, Scott has displayed a lack of conformity when directing films that seem destined for Oscars and mass critical acclaim, and no film signaled his late-period shift into the peculiar and gonzo quite like House of Gucci. With a stacked cast that included Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, and Al Pacino, the 2021 biographical crime drama featured an array of bonkers performances and shaggy pacing, but you definitely can't knock the film for being formulaic.

From the “Defying Gravity” number in Wicked to Paul riding the sandworm in Dune: Part Two, 2024 delivered some mind-blowing movie moments that demanded to be seen on the big screen. In the streaming age, filmmakers are having to push the boat out further and further to get audiences out to theaters. If a movie doesn’t demand to be seen on the big screen, then audiences will wait to watch it at home.
2024 has brought some thrilling action sequences and deeply cinematic imagery that rewarded a trip to the movies. Ridley Scott put hungry sharks in the Colosseum in Gladiator II. Rose Glass made her hero 50 feet tall in Love Lies Bleeding. These movie scenes were the best theatrical experiences of the year.

Gladiator II has been on fire at the box office since coming out two weeks ago, taking in nearly $350 million worldwide so far. And while those who saw it have been entertained by duels and sharks, there’s one thing we can all agree it was missing: a little song and dance! Fortunately, Saturday Night Live has it covered, releasing a spoof trailer that wonders, What if Gladiator II was a musical?
Set up as a rushed way to capitalize on both Wicked and Moana II, both of which topped Gladiator II at the box office this week, the trailer features star and SNL host Paul Mescal leading the additional 50 minutes of sure-to-be smash songs. After some singing by Devon Walker, Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang – who have a number presumably called “There’s No Place Like Rome”, hitting on swords, sandals, whores, and scandals – Mescal gets his chance to try out his pipes.

The Pokémon franchise has had numerous spin-off games that have featured on various consoles over the decades. Each one stands out in their own way mainly due to the gameplay, taking the core concept of the mainline Pokémon games and turning it on its head. With the Switch 2 and Generation 10 currently on the horizon, there are two spin-off titles that future Pokémon games can learn from if they want to be incredibly memorable.
Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon Xd: Gale Of Darkness are two games that were released on the GameCube back in the early 2000s. These two games mainly stand out due to their interesting stories, how much there was to explore, and especially how they altered the typical Pokémon battle mechanics. Warning: The following contains some Spoilers for Gladiator II!A historian is pointing out one historical error in the shark naval battle in Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. The sequel to Ridley Scott's 2000 epic follows Maximus' son, Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), as he steps back into the gladiator arena after Rome invades his home city, Numidia, under the rule of twin emperors, Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). The naval battle is a cruel form of entertainment that fills the Colosseum floor with water and tiger sharks while re-enacting a naval warfare with fighters from two boats fighting each other to death.
Alison Futrell, an associate professor of Roman history at the University of Arizona, told Business Insider that the naval scene is mostly accurate. The professor explained that staged naval battles at the Colosseum would work with "quasi-minaturized boats that give the flavor of warships," which is what the film did.

While I wait to meet up with Paul Mescal, eight men in short shorts walk past on the street. It may be a surprisingly sunny late September morning in London, but it’s cold — not the weather for exposed thighs — and these gentlemen don’t look like they’re out for a jog.
“I have noticed certain similarities in certain specific boroughs of London,” Mescal says upon his arrival, when I ask if he’s spotted any lookalikes on his travels. He’s smirking, quite possibly because a man sporting Mescal short shorts, Mescal scruffy facial hair and a little Mescal mullet has just strolled past us with the sort of comic timing a director would have required several takes to get so precisely. “For the record, I don’t think I’m responsible,” he says of the upsurge in short shorts, arguing that he’s merely dressing the same...

It will tell the story of Lucius as he rises to power in the Colosseum and has to find strength in fighting in the process. Tarsem’s The Fall is now showing exclusively on Mubi.A version of the following interview was originally published in Pardo, the Locarno Film Festival’s official daily magazine. The conversation has been expanded and edited for republication on Notebook. The Fall.“If Andrei Tarkovsky made The Wizard of Oz”—that’s how David Fincher summed up his friend Tarsem’s globe-spanning, decades-in-the-making magnum opus, The Fall (2006). This shapeshifting fable about the art and power of storytelling is maybe more Alejandro Jodorowsky than Tarkovsky, but, most importantly, it’s all Tarsem.Tarsem: the mononym is of a piece with his bold, brazen style. Like his film-school peers Michael Bay and Zack Snyder, the Punjab-born Tarsem is a bona fide vulgar auteur. The filmography of the late, great Tony Scott is packed with Denzel Washington favourites – from Man On Fire and Crimson Tide, to Déjà Vu and Unstoppable. The director and star had a real creative chemistry spanning years, right up until Scott’s untimely death in 2012. And now, for the second time, Washington is collaborating with Scott’s similarly legendary filmmaker brother Ridley, stepping into Gladiator II – their first work together since 2007’s American Gangster.

It’s undeniable: Ridley Scott has made some of the greatest films of all time. Alien. Blade Runner. Gladiator. Thelma & Louise, just to name a few. And he’s been on one hell of a streak recently, refusing to slow down after decades in the business, wrangling major movies like The Last Duel, House Of Gucci, and Napoleon in the last few years alone. But now – finally – nearly 25 years since he last conjured the Colosseum and the decadent delights of Ancient Rome, he’s about to unleash the film that fans have waited decades for. Yes, it’s time to step back into the arena for Gladiator II – and according to the filmmaker himself, he hasn’t messed it up.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever made,” Scott tells Empire in the world-exclusive Gladiator II issue. Though, he concedes, he has made several other great movies. “One of the best things.

24 years after Russell Crowe delivered entertainment in the Roman Colosseum in Ridley Scott's Best Picture-winner "Gladiator," the director is back with a sequel that will be hitting theaters in November. We finally got a look at the "Gladiator II" trailer today and to say that it looks wild would be an understatement. Scott has upped the action while assembling a stellar ensemble cast led by Paul Mescal ("All of Us Strangers"), Pedro Pascal ("The Mandalorian"), and Denzel Washington ("The Equalizer").
While Scott clearly isn't going for overall historical accuracy here, these films are based loosely on what happened in Ancient Rome during these storied gladiator battles. The trailer features some particularly wild moments, including a rhino being let loose in the arena. But the wildest moment comes early when the arena is flooded to simulate a navy battle, with huge war ships and dozens of men duking it out for the Romans to watch.

A fan suggests adding boss rematches in Elden Ring's Colosseums which would help really improve the game's experience. The proposed system would allow players to face bosses they've already defeated for reduced rewards, extending game longevity. While unlikely to be officially implemented, it's a great concept the game could very much benefit from.
Elden Ring may have wrapped up its planned content with Shadow of the Erdtree but one passionate player has one more suggestion that would keep the community satisfied for years. It's inarguable that the most satisfying feeling in a FromSoftware RPG is overcoming an imposing boss that once felt insurmountable. This process of learning patterns and persevering through the difficulty is partly why Elden Ring is such a spectacular achievement, and yet experiencing those moments of victory over again can be difficult, especially since there's no way to just skip forward to a beloved boss encounter.

It didn’t happen at Universal’s presentation, but we finally got a Christopher Nolan announcement at CinemaCon 2024.
On Thursday morning, Paramount Pictures’ President of Domestic Distribution Chris Aronson revealed that Nolan’s “Interstellar” will return to theaters on September 27, 2024 in both 70mm and IMAX formats. The re-release is a celebration of the film’s 10-year anniversary. It is probably also — at least somewhat — a continued celebration of Nolan’s Best Picture-winner “Oppenheimer.”
Of course, the “Oppenheimer” victory isn’t for Paramount to tout, and its studio Universal took a brief victory lap (or two) during its own Wednesday afternoon Colosseum presentation. The on-stage champagne-popping split time with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and included a prerecorded message from Nolan. (He did not touch on “Mario.”)
In the package played for a packed house of (mostly) exhibitors, Nolan said he had been “very nervous” about showing “Oppenheimer” footage to the same CinemaCon audience last year.

In the package played for a packed house of (mostly) exhibitors, Nolan said he had been “very nervous” about showing “Oppenheimer” footage to the same CinemaCon audience last year.

FF7 Rebirth offers the most minigames in the series, and many of its greatest hits are housed at the Gold Saucer. The Musclehead Colosseum and 3D Brawl in FF7 Rebirth offer solid combat challenges, but lack unique features and lasting replay value. Galactic Saviors' space battles, G-Bike's motorcycle races, and the Queen's Blood card game add variety and fun to the Gold Saucer experience.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth might just have the most minigames of any entry in the series, but they're most concentrated at the Gold Saucer. A veritable minigame paradise, the Gold Saucer is a returning location from the original FF7. It's a glittering palace of entertainment on FF7 Rebirth's map, a monument to delight and debauchery, and the best place to take a break from endless combat encounters.
The Gold Saucer is first visited during Chapter Eight of FF7 Rebirth, at which point all its minigames are unlocked.

Gladiator 2 star Pedro Pascal showers praise on the long-awaited epic historical drama sequel, hailing the "impressive" set used for the film and the vision of director Ridley Scott.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Pascal offered his thoughts on the Gladiator sequel, which wrapped up filming in mid-January and sees The Last of Us star feature in an undisclosed role. According to Pascal, he's never seen a production setup as good as the one Scott put together for Gladiator 2. "I’ve been a part of big sets where the identity of the project, in a sense, is its size—and still, I have not been on a set as impressive as Gladiator’s. [Director] Ridley [Scott] leaves very little to the imagination in the most old-fashioned sense," he said.

Eevee's rise to fame as one of the most popular Pokémon has been recognized by the franchise, now treating it on par with other iconic mascots. Eevee Day, celebrated on November 21st in Japan, showcases the love and appreciation for the Evolution Pokémon, leading to various merchandise and advertising campaigns. Eevee's popularity has been reflected in video games, with appearances in both core series and spin-offs.

Gladiator was a groundbreaking film in 2000, reinvigorating the historical epic genre while earning critical acclaim and massive box office success. Gladiator broke a 51-year record by winning the Best Picture Oscar, but not winning either Best Director or Best Screenplay. Despite the unusual award distribution, Gladiator's five total Oscars and numerous nominations cemented its status as the biggest film of 2000 and a lasting cultural touchstone.

The upcoming Elden Ring Dlc, Shadow of the Erdtree, has potential for expansion, but a new multiplayer mode like prop hunt could be an exciting addition. The Colosseum Update showed the potential for multiplayer expansion, and moving away from combat-focused gameplay could offer a fresh angle for multiplayer in Elden Ring. Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins opened up about the story behind Paul Mescal’s casting in Ridley Scott’s long-awaited Gladiator 2.
In a recent interview with Variety, Robbins shared how the Oscar-nominated actor was able to secure the leading role in the sequel of 2000’s epic historical drama. He revealed that they were really impressed by Mescal’s charismatic stage presence during his performance in the West End play of A Streetcar Named Desire, especially when the audience responded so well to his shirtless scenes. "He played Stanley, and there are several moments where he takes off his shirt, and it was electric," Robbins recalled. "The ladies in the audience were very vocal, and we were like, 'I think we’ve found our guy.'"

Ridley Scott's 2000 historical epic "Gladiator" -- based very, very, very loosely on real history -- follows a fictional Roman military commander named Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) who suffers a long string of terrible tragedies. Maximus is poised to be the next Roman emperor, but the sniveling, Richard III-like Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) usurps the throne instead. Maximus is arrested for not pledging loyalty, but evades capture and flees home ... only to find that his wife and child have been crucified. Maximus is then kidnapped by slave traders and sold into the gladiatorial arena. He now has to murder others to stay alive and keep his true identity secret, all while Commodus becomes more and more corrupt.
Eventually, at the end of a 155-minute movie, Commodus is punished for his evil. Maximus, however, also dies while fighting the villain. Justice is done, and Maximus can finally succumb to mourning. The...

Los Angeles, April 3 (Ians) Hollywood star Russell Crowe has quipped that he will return as General Maximus Decimus Meridius in the ‘Gladiator’ sequel – as a corpse lying “six feet under” the Colosseum.
The 58-year-old actor grabbed an Oscar for playing the vengeful Roman commander in Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic and has said he won’t be starring in the long-awaited follow-up, set 20 years after the first film, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I think when they’re shooting in the Colosseum and stuff, I’ll be lying like six feet underground… you won’t see me, but I’ll be there beneath the ground,” he joked on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’.
Russell added that he had spoken with ‘Blade Runner’ director Ridley, 85, about the sequel, but they had concluded his character was better left dead.

The buildup to Elden Ring's Dlc has been long and chaotic, but resulted in something better than what was rumored by leaks. Publisher Bandai Namco leaked information about future Elden Ring projects, developer FromSoftware released the Dlc-adjacent Colosseum update last December, and Director Hidetaka Miyazaki teased more content for the game at Tga 2022. But now that confirmed information about Elden Ring's first expansion Dlc has finally been unveiled, fans can rest assured that it is better than what they had previously been led to believe.
When the ransomware group AlphV cyber-attacked Bandai Namco last summer, the publisher's fiscal roadmap for the following year was leaked, and it included the title of an Elden Ring Dlc expansion: Barbarians of the Badlands. This name suggested that the game's first Dlc was to take the Tarnished out of the Lands Between and into the Badlands, where they were banished before the events of Elden Ring.

New Dlc for Elden Ring, entitled Shadow of the Erdtree, has been surprise-announced on Twitter by developer FromSoftware. Released just over a year ago in 2022, the open-world game became an instant hit, offering a huge map for players to explore filled with Dark Souls-esque enemy encounters.
Since launch, fans have been speculating on when full Elden Ring Dlc might release, and while there's been no official release date given, Shadow of the Erdtree has been confirmed to be in development. Taking to Twitter to share the news, the official Elden Ring account stated simply: "Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for #Eldenring Shadow of the Erdtree is currently in development. We hope you look forward to a new adventure in the Lands Between."

Following Elden Ring's Colosseums update, attention has turned to what FromSoftware will do next with the Lands Between in Dlc material. The Colosseums update was a welcome revitalization of Elden Ring's multiplayer experience that made use of the arenas already present in the game; but for the next Dlc, FromSoftware could make the more ambitious choice of leaving the Lands Between behind and expanding the game's world.
Elden Ring's first Dlc was initially expected to take place outside the Lands Between. A cyber attack against Bandai Namco in 2022 claimed to have leaked Elden Ring's first Dlc Barbarians of the Badlands, but this leak was later proven false, and the Colosseum update was FromSoftware's real first stab at Elden Ring Dlc. That still hasn't stopped fans from speculating new regions the developer might focus on in future DLCs, with the Badlands and Miquella's Dreams being popular picks.

FromSoftware's latest game Elden Ring took the traditional gameplay of Souls-style RPGs and revitalized it with new mechanics such as open-world exploration, horseback riding, and item crafting, but its Dlc could improve one aspect in particular: co-op. The co-op and PvP invasion multiplayer mode of Elden Ring - barely changed from its first appearance in Demon's Souls - can be awkward for players who just want to explore the open world together. The current limitations of Elden Ring's co-op gameplay, which inspired fan efforts such as the Seamless Co-op Mod, could be addressed by FromSoftware in future Dlc similar to the recent Colosseum update.
The core co-op and spirit-summoning mechanics of Elden Ring first showed up in Demon's Souls, the 2009 PS3 dark fantasy game that codified many elements of From Software's Souls RPGs. Players can inscribe summons signs that show up in other instances of the game.

Elden Ring's open world design is one of its most successful features, allowing Tarnished to explore wherever and whenever they please - but the map is still missing what could be its best biomes. With the game now approaching its first birthday, players have had plenty of time to ride Torrent through the expansive fields of Limgrave, the swampy Liurnia of the Lakes, and the Scarlet Rot-infested grounds of Caelid. There are plenty of other terrains and environments that Elden Ring could explore, and they could provide a refreshing change in pace.
Elden Ring's free Dlc, the Colosseum update, provided three new PvP arenas and some patch notes, but not much was offered in the way of content. This is only logical, as a fully-fleshed expansion from a developer of FromSoftware's caliber is unlikely to ever come free of charge. Elden Ring's free Colosseum update brought about numerous changes to the game, including new areas for players to engage in PvP fights. As its name would imply, it opened up the three previously inaccessible colosseums scattered around the Lands Between, which curious fans had stumbled across earlier through the use of mods and datamining. This had led the community to suspect future content for the areas, and when the free update came in December 2022, their suspicions were confirmed - as all the colosseums had been transformed into spectacular battle arenas.
The Colosseum Dlc, otherwise known as the 1.08 update, included a slew of other changes besides PvP spots. A long list of bug fixes, balance adjustments, and even new hairstyles work to revamp the entire experience, and so far many players have noticed smoother gameplay as a result. For the average player, Elden Ring is a challenging game that takes a lot of effort to play, much less beat entirely; but it could have been much more rewarding with a simple change. Many games have incorporated this particular feature in recent years, as it can turn day-to-day, ordinary combat into something straight out of an action film. Considering boss fights are such a main focal point of the Souls-like title, it's especially surprising that Elden Ring missed out on this fruitful opportunity.
Future updates for the widely-beloved FromSoftware game could contain such improvements, amid heaps of new content, of course, but other than the free Colosseum Dlc, much is still up for speculation. There are several directions that Miyazaki could potentially entertain: for example, an update could bring players to a different setting and leave the Lands Between, or a Dlc could disrupt Elden Ring's open-world format entirely.
