Jean-Luc Godard Confidant Fabrice Aragno Readies Contemplative Locarno Player ‘The Lake,’ Fusing Majestic Scenery With Inner Turmoil
Image
Swiss filmmaker Fabrice Aragno (“Dimanche”) who served as Jean-Luc Godard’s multi-faceted collaborator and creative confidant for the better part of two decades, heads to Locarno for the world premiere of his latest feature “The Lake” (“Le Lac”).

It competes for Locarno’s top Golden Leopard in the fest’s main International Competition, bowing on Aug. 14.

Turning the minutia of life’s fleeting encounters into displays of visceral emotion, the project sees the filmmaker surrender further to the scene. Unburdened from heavy dialogue, the landscapes speak volumes and the middle-aged protagonists are left stoic, only their heavy expressions and agile frames holding the space between the tangible and divine as they handle a rugged five-day sailing race on a large lake.

“I entered the world of cinema because I see it, and feel it, as an art form at the crossroads of painting and photography (the image), music (sound and...

The Lighthouse Star Willem Dafoe in Talks to Join Robert Eggers Werwulf
Image
The Lighthousestar Willem Dafoe is reportedly eying a part in Robert Eggers' next feature - Werwulf.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Dafoe is reportedly in talks to star in Eggers' next period horror film, Werwulf, alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, who have also been tapped for the project. The film is slated to take place in 13th century England and be written with Old English dialogue. Werwulf will be directed by Eggers, who will be co-writing and co-producing along with The Northman co-writer and frequent Björk collaborator, Sjón.

Announced back in January following the success of Eggers' Nosferatu, Werwulf has already been set for a release date of Christmas Day in 2026. Just days ago, it was confirmed that Taylor-Johnson and Depp would be reuniting for the film, both of whom previously shared the silver screen in Nosferatu alongside Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Bill Skarsgård, and Willem Dafoe. Aaron Taylor-Johnson Sets Robert Eggers Reunion With Werwulf — Lily-Rose Depp In Talks To Co-Star
Image
He's faced Alphas (28 Years Later), Rhinos (Kraven The Hunter), vampires (Nosferatu), and years of media lines asking whether or not he'll ever play James Bond, but for his next move, it looks like Aaron Taylor-Johnson is preparing to dance with the devil in the pale (full-)moonlight. Per Variety's reporting, the English actor is set to reunite with Nosferatu director Robert Eggers on the filmmaker's upcoming 13th century-set horror joint Werwulf. And, what's more, fellow Eggers alumni Lily-Rose Depp is in talks to join him.

Set to immerse cinemagoers in a meticulously detailed period setting once again, Werwulf — co-written by Eggers alongside Icelandic poet and The Northman scribe Sjón — is currently slated for release on Christmas Day 2026 stateside, meaning we'll likely see the movie hit British shores sometime in early 2027. In terms of what to expect from the movie however, beyond Eggers' now-customary era-accurate language and, presumably, a werewolf of some description,...

The 35-year-old actor will reunite with director Robert Eggers on the motion picture, after sources confirmed to Deadline that Taylor-Johnson has signed up for the movie. And the insider also revealed Lily Rose-Depp is in talks to appear alongside him. Both Taylor-Johnson and Rose-Depp previously teamed up with Eggers for 2024 gothic horror film Nosferatu. Eggers will helm Werwulf, which is slated to be released on Christmas Day 2026 in the US. While plot details are yet to be revealed, the motion picture is expected to be a 13th century werewolf horror movie. But it is known that Eggers has reunited with his The Northman collaborator Sjón for the script. In January, insiders told the Hollywood Reporter that the story will be set in 13th century England, with dialogue "true to the time period".Translations and annotations will be provided for those who don't understand Old English,...

Robert Eggers
Robert Eggers will be following up Nosferatu with Werwulf for Focus Features, and Variety reports tonight that Nosferatu star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has signed onto the project.

Additionally, Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu) is currently in talks to join the film as well.

Set in the 13th century and being described as a medieval horror movie, Robert Eggers’ Werwulf will howl its way into theaters from Focus Features on Christmas Day 2026.

The filmmaker co-wrote the screenplay for Werwulf alongside Sjón, the Icelandic poet and novelist who previously co-wrote the Viking movie The Northman with Eggers. Sjón has also been announced as the co-writer for a new Labyrinth movie being directed by Eggers.

Chris Columbus, who produced Nosferatu, is on board to produce Werwulf.

While Universal hasn’t had much success with their recent attempts to bring classic monsters back to life for today’s audiences, with this year’s Wolf Man performing poorly at the box office,...

Julia Stiles Says She Felt “So Slimy” During Harvey Weinstein-Led Reshoots for ‘Down to You’
Image
Julia Stiles is recalling working with Harvey Weinstein on a movie she says was “executed very poorly.”

The actress appeared on a recent episode of the Films To Be Buried with Brett Goldstein podcast, where she opened up about feeling “so slimy” during reshoots for her 2000 teen rom-com Down to You.

“It was a time when teen rom-coms were really popular,” she explained. “The director [Kris Isacsson] wrote the script. He was a first-time director and he was a very, very intelligent, capable guy. The script was very good. And then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend. And it just became dumb.”

Stiles claimed the disgraced movie mogul and convicted sex offender was looking to capitalize on her past successful projects by adding in unnecessary scenes.

“They’re pouring money at it in stupid ways,” she said. “So when we went and did reshoots,...

Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Christopher Landon is reuniting with the folks at Blumhouse for another twisty thrill ride in Drop. Landon's collaborative history with the indie producing studio began with 2010's Paranormal Activity 2, becoming the Paranormal Activity franchise's primary writer for almost every subsequent installment, including directing the 2014 spinoff The Marked Ones, and though he was not part of the original final installment's team, but would return for Next of Kin. Beyond Paranormal Activity, Landon also made a name for himself with the Happy Death Day movies and Freaky, as well as the Netflix supernatural comedy We Have a Ghost.

In Drop, Landon tells the story of Violet, a widowed young mother going on her first date in years with a man named Henry at an upscale restaurant. Though things start off well, the night gradually takes a turn when an unknown person begins...

“Lake Trilogy” TV Series Review
Image
Sebastian Cavazza as veteran policeman Taras Birsa, in “The Lake,” the first mini series in the “Lake Trilogy.” Courtesy of MHz Choice

In the past several years, I’ve reviewed a bunch of TV series – mostly crime dramas – from many European countries. Here’s my first from Slovenia. “The Lake Trilogy” is a collection of three miniseries following veteran police detective Taras Birsa (Sebastian Cavazza) and his team through an array of homicides and major crimes in their city

The first is six 50-minute episodes; the others are only three. Each set features a new case (or set of cases) with mostly the same cast on the law-and-order side.

The package reminds me of our Harry Bosch series. Both are led by gray-haired, street-savvy cops, usually in a dour mood. Both have grown daughters and romantic complications in their lives. Both have contacts outside the department who help our heroes...

Lesley-Ann Brandt’s Best TV and Movie Roles: Where You’ve Seen The Walking Dead Star
Image
Before joining The Walking Dead universe as Pearl Thorne in The Ones Who Live, Lesley-Ann Brandt starred in a variety of roles for TV and film. The South African actor is well-known for taking on projects in horror, fantasy, and other traditionally “nerdy” genres, having appeared in shows like Gotham, The Librarians, and most notably Lucifer.

With a variety of roles under her belt, here’s where else you’ve seen Lesley-Ann Brandt before.

Lucifer

As mentioned previously, Brandt is most known for her role as Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) right-hand Mazikeen in the hit TV series Lucifer. Mazikeen a.k.a. Maze is known for her fierce loyalty, though she sometimes struggles to adapt her brash nature to the human world. Brandt does a phenomenal job of portraying Maze’s growth from demon with a penchant for sadistic torture to a slightly more vulnerable and human demon with a penchant for sadistic torture.
