ScreamFest La is now in full swing, and I could not be more ready for a week+ of horror movies from some of the best up-and-coming horror producers/directors in the world! I attended opening night on Tuesday and was treated to Epic Pictures & The October Society’s horror anthology Tales Of Halloween. The film included ten short terrifying—and sometimes hilarious—films from the likes of Adam Gierasch (Fertile Ground, Night Of The Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy), Axelle Carolyn (Centurion, Soulmate), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2-4), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), John Skipp (Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Lucky Mckee (The Woman), Mike Mendez (The Gravedancers), Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent), Paul Solet (Grace), and Ryan Schifrin (Abominable).
There are quite a few horror movies reaching the silver screen this weekend, but Tales Of Halloween is the perfect film for the season.

Roger Moore takes over as James Bond 007 for Live And Let Die. And it might just be his best Bond outing...
This is the one where Bond does Blaxploitation. It's Roger’s debut. The One with All the Voodoo. Live And Let Die is memorable for numerous reasons. Great villains, the super-hot Solitaire, crocodiles and a distinct otherworldly flavour grant the film memorability: no small achievement when you’re the eighth child of 23. It’s nearly a classic, and certainly one of Moore’s best, but the final half hour falls a bit flat. Switch off after Bond’s Crocodile Dundee moment, just before the looooooooong boat chase. Avoid if easily offended by dubious racial politics. And sexual politics for that matter – but with Bond that’s kind of a given.
The Villain: Both ‘two-bit Island diplomat’ and Harlem gangster, Dr Kananga is a fine enemy for Moore to cut his teeth on.

You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)
And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

Fortunately for fans After Dark has only improved their product. Though the Horrorfest run seems to be a thing of the past the company kicked off a quality counter in After Dark Originals. And let me tell you Originals has done a pretty good job of delivering the goods. Dark Circles Seconds Apart Fertile Ground and Husk are all enjoyable pictures. For a company with more passion than funds thats an impressive lineup of pictures.

CBS Films is developing an original superhero film called Split, which comes from screenwriters Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons, Fertile Ground).
According to THR, the story centers on "a young woman who, having spent most of her life bouncing between foster homes and institutions, is surprised when she is sought out by an identical twin she never knew existed. She also discovers that she and her sister have powerful abilities and must go on the run to keep their secrets hidden from threatening mysterious forces."
It's actually kind of nice to see an original superhero movie being made. A lot of studios aren't really taking the risks to make original films these days, so I think it's great when it happens! What do you think of the concept?

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.
We won’t touch on everything and I’m sure new programming will come up as October gets itself moving. I’ll throw an update out there from time to time if a special is airing or a new programming line up is discovered, uncovered, revealed or undead. Yes, this is for cable or dish. Network TV will...

Vinnie Jones is doing what he does best in this selection of new stills from Adam Gierasch's ('Fertile Ground', 'Night of the Demons') new thriller 'Schism'. Callum Blue ('Secret Diary of a Call Girl') plays recent coma victim Dylan who is trying to untangle his lost memories with terrifying results. Jones ('The Midnight Meat Train') is slashing and gun-weilding his way to answers in the new selection of snaps which also feature peeks at Blue and sexy co-star Ashlynn Yennie who appeared in Tom Six's 'The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)' and its equally f#cked up predecessor. Last year we compiled a list of horror films with lesbian or bisexual characters. This year, we thought we'd highlight out actresses who have appeared in some Halloween-worthy watching. From the classic to the contemporary, we've been in some of the best (and worst) scary movies.
Here are 11 movies you can find for your viewing (dis)pleasure this holiday.
Amanda Bearse in Fright Night
The actress played a teen named Amy Peterson in the 1985 original. She gets turned into a vampire, but is able to turn back into herself after the cure is discovered. Amanda came out eight years later — as a lesbian, not a vampire.
Portia de Rossi in Scream 2
Portia played a bitchy sorority sister in the 1997 sequel to the very successful Scream. She doesn't last too long, but she steals the scenes she's in with some sassy insults.
Sara Gilbert and Drew Barrymore in Poison Ivy...

Shooting on Super 16, the film follows "Dylan White" who works as a cook in Baton Rouge. He is also in a solid relationship with his girlfriend "Brandy". Things are great until strange events prompt him to seek out the truth about himself -- following clues, Dylan discovers a dark past in New Orleans. Can he right his past wrongs and find redemption for his sins? This is a dark indie thriller in the vein of Jacob's Ladder. Gierasch and Anderson also penned The Mother of Tears, Autopsy and Fertile Ground. Gierasch directs.

Dark Arts, a division of Seven Arts Entertainment, is moving forward on two genre productions. The first is Schism from director Adam Gierasch, who penned the script with Jace Anderson. This duo previously gave us Autopsy , Night of the Demons and Fertile Ground . Dark Arts will also start production on Thicker , which is based on the short film and festival favorite of the same name. The feature will be directed by Terry Nemeroff and will star Leslie Zemeckis, Peter Facinelli, Guy Pearce and John Goodman. This film follows a brother and sister who go to great lengths in an attempt to recover an inheritance that their recently deceased mother was buried with. We'll hopefully have more details on Schism very soon.

Just. Don't! Ok, I guess I can expand my review, but in the end it all comes back to that. I'm talking about Fertile Ground (2010) After all the luck I've been having recently, it seems my luck with AfterDark Pictures has run out. This movie was beyond bad, it was downright stupid. The horrible cast begins with Emily Weaver (played by Leisha Hailey, The L Word, American Dad) who was awful. Granted she could play pathetic all night long, but…...

You may have a tough time tracking down all eight of this year's "After Dark Originals" titles, as they've been sprinkled all across the media landscape: a few debuted on the SyFy Channel, some had cursory theatrical releases, a handful landed directly on DVD -- and it's all a little bit frustrating for a guy like me: a horror freak who writes for FEARnet and tries to see the newest horror flicks as early as possible. But I track 'em all down eventually, and the two most recent arrivals on the DVD shelves are the surprisingly strong Seconds Apart and the unsurprisingly rote, dull, and generic Fertile Ground, which is the one we're here to discuss today. I'll keep it short. The...

Write/director Adam Gierasch proves he's got more range than I expected with this effective slow-roaster of a haunted house yarn. Well lensed with classy photography and muted performances by its relatively unknown cast (though TV fans may recognize Leisha Hailey), Fertile Ground turns on the creepy about twenty minutes in and refuses to let go. Let's put it this way: I just watched Haunting in Connecticut on Netflix in the same week and this was better.

Solaris - Criterion have released a brand new high def Blu-ray of Andrei Tarkovsky's If you've never seen it, this is the time to. Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) described viewing the new print "a revelation" in his "One Scene" mini-essay. The Big Bang - From Anchor Bay comes the Tarantino-esque neo-noir starring Antonia Banderas. I have to admit the trailer for this one caught my attention, but I have a feeling it could either be a unique off-the-wall blend of neo-noir and scifi... or a tedious exercise. We'll see I guess.

The latest and soon to be released Fertile Ground from AfterDark Films showed much promise.
A nice looking haunted house thriller with a decent, slow build and the enormously talented actress Leisha Hailey from the hit Showtime drama "The L Word" in the lead role. Had I realized beforehand that director Adam Gierasch from the sorry excuse for a remake of Night of the Demons wrote and directed it I might not have been so surprised when the movie completely fell apart about half way through.
This is further proof that "AfterDark Films" are a hit or miss. Films like Frontier(s), Penny Dreadful, and Reincarnation are some of the hits. Chalk up Fertile Ground alongside Nightmare Man and Tooth & Nail as one of the misses.
Fertile Ground centers around the loving, young couple Nate and Emily Weaver played by Gale Harold and Leisha Hailey.

Fertile Ground is the next chilling feature from the After Dark Originals brand, coming to DVD & Blu-ray 23rd May after screening at the After Dark Horrorfest Weekend earlier in the year. Helmed by Adam Gierasch, director of Autopsy (2008) and Night of the Demons (2010), Fertile Ground was described as one of this year’s festival’s “darkest bright spots” by Dread Central and perfectly shows off Gierasch’s fantastic, and fertile, imagination.
Emily and Nate Weaver leave the city for the rural comfort of Nate’s ancestral home in the country. Once there, Emily is plagued by horrifying visions and haunted by the ghosts inhabiting their isolated new home. When Nate’s behaviour undergoes a strange and fearful metamorphous, Emily fears she might be the latest target in a murderous tradition.

Seconds Apart After Dark Films has just announced that they will release two more titles from their After Dark Originals lineup, which played in select theaters back in January, to DVD on May 24th - Seconds Apart and Fertile Ground. After Dark Films was also responsible for Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For. They abandoned the format this year to focus on the "Originals" format. They also changed another element which included them releasing all eight films from the lineup all at once onto DVD. Instead, now they seemed focused on just releasing two titles at a time to DVD and spreading it throughout the entire year instead.
With Seconds Apart and Fertile Ground both films will feature a behind the scenes featurette. Fertile Ground will also include audio commentary with the filmmakers and lead actress Leisha Hailey in addition to the featurette.

More After Dark Originals news! How do you like it, how do you like it?! Here’s another fun interview with husband and wife writing team Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson discussing Fertile Ground, which Gierasch directed from Anderson’s script.
Known for their wilder side (see their Night of the Demons remake), here’s what the duo had to say:
Gierasch: “It’s a big, big, big departure for me, because it’s like one of those early-70’s ghost stories like Julia (which was based on the Peter Straub book The Haunting of Julia); it’s like Burnt Offerings…it’s similar to The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. It’s sort of a very out-of-time, ghosty story that’s really more of a drama about a woman and her relationship with her husband and the loss of a child.”
Chris Haberman: Where did the inspiration for the story come from?...

In cooperation with Syfy and Lionsgate, on January 28th After Dark Films is releasing eight "After Dark Originals" in theaters, in a bid to take the "horror festival concept to a higher level". Instead of acquiring the films after the fact, as with "8 Films to Die For", these Originals were developed from the ground up at the famed genre distributor in an effort to create "high quality horror films" with full input from the After Dark team. Now, in anticipation of their release, B-d reporter Chris Eggertsen put eight questions to the directors of each of the upcoming films, in a series we're calling "8 Questions to Die For: Interviews with the Directors of the After Dark Originals". In this installment we interviewed Fertile Ground director Adam Gierasch, who earlier directed the After-Dark distributed Autopsy and also the recent Night of the Demons remake. The last couple of years have been very busy for Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. Following the remake Night of the Demons , the duo moved into Fertile Ground , an After Dark original film that marks a decided change of tonal pace for the creative team. In Shock's interview with Gierasch and Anderson, the pair shed some light on what we can expect when Ground opens this Friday. Shock Till You Drop: Out of the films released through the Originals line, this one doesn't appear to have the staple horror boogeymen - no vampires, no zombies. Adam Gierasch: This is a psychological, slightly supernatural thriller. I wanted to make a movie that was more similar to .70s ghost stories like Burnt Offerings , the The Reincarnation of Peter Proud and The Changeling , more of...

The first trailer for director Adam Gierasch’s “Fertile Ground”, one of the titles on After Dark’s 2011 Horrorfest schedule, is now online. Gierasch’s got a pretty interesting resume. Besides directing, he’s also written and starred in plenty of genre movies, including “Toolbox Murders” and the recent remake of “Night of the Demons”, which he also wrote and directed. Emily and Nate Weaver leave the city for the rural comfort of Nate’s ancestral home in New Hampshire. Once there, Emily is repeatedly haunted by horrifying visions and becomes overwhelmed by the total isolation of their new home. Just as she discovers she is pregnant, Nate starts exhibiting increasingly strange and violent behavior. In a house haunted by past victims, Emily fears she is the latest target in a murderous tradition.
