The Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox event offers players unique rewards and plans tied to real-life locations and events in West Virginia. The Wise Mothman, a giant purple-eyed bug, appears during this limited-time event where players complete tasks and emote to summon it. The Mothman legend originated in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the 1960s, and it was associated with sightings of a terrifying winged creature.
With the success of the Fallout TV series, more people are revisiting Fallout 76. Though initially panned by many when it was released, Bethesda has put a lot of work into the multiplayer title, and a small but dedicated niche community has formed around it. Seasonal events like Invaders From Beyond, regular updates, and patches are now being presented to a whole new audience of players, and one of the most recent seasonal events also happens to have ties to real-life events.

Point Place, West Virginia - 1966: the first alleged sighting of Mothman. When two gravediggers were working in the cemetery one night, they claimed to have seen a large figure fly overhead, a figure that would come to be known as Mothman. One of the most chilling cryptozoology-based horror movies out there, the 2002 film The Mothman Prophecies explores the (allegedly) true accounts of a winged beast that may very well be a harbinger of doom, and it was director Mark Pellington who brought him to the screen. Over 20 years after the film’s release, Pellington teases the return of the Mothman.
At the Eerie Horror Fest in Pennsylvania over the weekend, Pellington hinted that a Mothman Prophecies streaming series is being planned. “Streaming Mothman is coming,” he says.
We don’t have any further information at this time, but Pellington promises that more details will be revealed soon. So stay tuned for more on this one as we learn it.
Released in 2002, The Mothman Prophecies stars Richard Gere as reporter drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of strange events, including psychic visions and the appearance of bizarre entities.

I’m beginning to think that, cinematically at least, the Wendigo hit its peak back in 1995 with Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo, an absolutely batshit mix of folklore, Evil Dead-style mayhem, and stop-motion monsters. Despite some decent films on the subject like The Retreat there’s yet to be a definitive screen version of this creature from Native American folklore.
The latest take on the myth is titled, aptly enough, The Wendigo and it begins somewhere in the woods of North Carolina as YouTuber Logan calls out the creature’s name hoping to catch it on camera for his livestream. He gets more than he bargained for and gets dragged off while, in true found-footage fashion, his camera glitches.

From Mothman to Mom. Deadline reports today that Mark Pellington has set up his next project, an action-revenge thriller titled Mom.
Pellington is directing the film for Roundtable Entertainment.
The “adrenaline-fueled” story follows a single mother who embarks on a daring cross-country rescue mission, piecing together clues in the search for her teenage daughter who has fallen victim to the horrors of human trafficking.
“We had been looking to do a movie that felt like a throwback to a movie like Rolling Thunder – something real, gritty, and of the moment; we were thrilled that Gabe Torres brought us this harrowing tale which is based on true events – and straight out of screenwriter Brent Jordan’s life experience. And Mark is the ideal partner for the material,” said producer John Baldecchi.

As soon as I arrived at a wacky water park that had a slide winding out of a crocodile’s mouth, I was warned that the servers for the Fallout 76 beta would be closing. I had just enough time to snap a picture of myself with the crocodile in photo mode doing the Pip-Boy pose and wearing a police uniform. Unfortunately, 0utside of my silly picture and some of these ridiculous locations around the wasteland, Fallout 76 is overwhelmingly desolate and empty.
The region has no human survivors except for the Vault 76 dwellers who are now running around dressed in clown suits and aviator sunglasses. It sounds like a jarring juxtaposition — and it is — but it still feels very much like the sort of silliness I’ve come to expect of Fallout games. A paradox emerges where the game is both empty and populated; there are no characters to interact with,...

Yes and No. There's going to be destruction, but when this title implies a blizzard in the likes that no man wants to experience, that is not going to happen. Get ready for a Syfy movie review, but this time, the outcome isn’t quite so horrible. Mothman still falls under the category of B-horror movie, but it sits at the top of it. Mothman is about a group of friends who have been hiding a secret of an accidental death (à la I Know What You Did Last Summer) and have to pay the price for it ten years later. In Point Pleasant, West Virginia, local legends tell of a mysterious Mothman that haunts the land which no Native Americans would live in for fear of evil spirits. When the group of friends reunite 10 years later, Mothman is out for vengeance.
I found the beginning “accident scene” overly melodramatic, but I did like that they made the victim one of the character's siblings instead of a random friend that no one really liked. The...

I don't know why I'm bothering to write about a supernatural Syfy disaster flick called Snowmageddon about a magical snow globe that when shaken unleashes a wintery apocalypse when the actual apocalypse is a little more than a day away. Do you realize when my life passes before my eyes how many of these Syfy movies I'm going to end up watching again in mega fast forward?
David Cubitt ("Medium"), Michael Hogan ("Battlestar Galactica"), and Magda Apanowicz ("Caprica") star in this Cinetel production from director Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Mothman) that'll probably make its bow on Syfy sometime this holiday season given the film's plot synopsis. Snowmageddon's plot kind of sounds like the basis for a very special Christmas episode of "Friday the 13th: The Series" that never got made.

Considering there is a Hollywood action blockbuster titled Red starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich opening in theaters in October, I would not be at all surprised if Syfy's upcoming werewolf flick Red, starring red hot Felicia Day, undergoes a title change between the time this trailer has been posted and whenever "coming soon" turns out to be.
Red puts a new spin on a classic fairy tale with Felicia Day ("Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog", "The Guild") starring as a modern descendant of 'Little Red Riding Hood' who brings her fiancé home to meet the family for him to discover that his bride-to-be's ancestral business is hunting werewolves. When I was employed at the University of South Florida in Tampa, I was a part of quite a few conference calls. They were sometimes interesting, but never as fascinating as the call set up by Syfy with Jewel Staite of "Firefly" fame, and Connor Fox of "Blood Night." Several residents reported seeing a man with red glowing eyes and wings who resembled a giant moth. Some speculate that what these residents actually saw was a large bird such as a giant snowy owl or a sandhill crane. This is my favorite theory. You can, of course, read about this and other theories at "Mothman's" Wikipedia listging. Syfy.s "Mothman" brings the legend ...

This Saturday night marks the premiere of Syfy's latest cryptozoological creature feature, Mothman. Earlier this week I somehow got invited to get up extra early (by my standards) to take part in a conference call Q&A with stars Jewel Staite and Connor Fox.
Perhaps it was lack of sleep that led to me realize shortly after the call began that I had no earthly clue what the heck to ask either of them. Could also have been due to having not seen the film and Syfy not having done much to promote it until the past couple days.
I'm guessing most of the other callers taking part also had some difficulty coming up with questions to ask considering someone actually asked them to compare Louisiana and California movie catering. Anyway, here's the transcript of the call for those interested in hearing more about Mothman as well as "Stargate", "Firefly...

This weekend, Syfy channel debuts their newest monster movie, Mothman. A follow-up to 2002's The Mothman Prophecies, Syfy promises more creature and less feature than its predecessor. It is based on a real West Virginia legend of a man-sized creature with giant moth wings and huge, glowing red eyes that wrecks havoc near a WWII TNT factory. Syfy's film stars Connor Fox (Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet) and Jewel Staite (Firefly, Stargate: Atlantis) as a duo trying to evade the vengeful cryptid. They talk to us about swamp filming and upcoming genre projects. FEARnet: Mothman seems quite a bit darker than the previous Syfy Creature Features. Js: It is a little...

Despite the promising looking poster art that was being shown around at Afm a few months ago, the first clip for Syfy's Mothman had made its way online to prove that it's more of the same goofy stuff we can expect from the network. Sigh.
Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Screamers: The Hunting) directed the flick for Rhi Entertainment, and it stars Jewel Staite of "Firefly" and "Stargate: Atlantis". Wilson also shares a writing credit alongside "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" writers Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh.
Well, at the very least this mythical psychic menace will be killing folks this time around instead of just making predictions about disasters. Look for it on Syfy April 24th at 9/8 Central.
Allow me to step into the creature's vacated psychic shoes -- I predict a scathing review from the Foywonder! Click below to watch the clip! I wonder if the monster will leave...

SyFy’s newest original movie Mothman premieres on the network this Saturday, April 24, at 9/8c.
Starring genre favorite Jewel Staite (Firefly/Serenity, Stargate Atlantis) and based on the legendary monster of West Virginia, Mothman tells the story of five childhood friends who run afowl of the monster as it seeks revenge for the cover-up of an accidental killing perpetrated long ago.
The legend itself is a fascinating one. In the mid-1960’s, residents of West Virginia reported a rash of sightings of a mysterious six-to-seven foot tall, man-like figure with red, glowing eyes and great wings. Seen rarely since, the subject has none-the-less become a favorite for cryptozoologists and conspiracy buffs, who attribute the identity of the creature to everything from alien being to para-psychological prefiguration of disaster. Author John Keel researched the subject and published a (highly fictionalized) book entitled The Mothman Prophecies in 1975, linking the Mothman’s appearances...

Mega Piranha, last Saturdays' SyFy Original Movie, drew terrific ratings, making it the channel's most-watched movie of 2010. The movie, which had former teen pop star Tiffany and The Brady Bunch's Barry Williams battling ever-growing piranha, had almost 2.2 million viewers -- more than the channel's Friday night offering (and current signature show), Caprica, has ever drawn. According to a press release from SyFy, the movie also did well in the valuable 25-54 demographic, drawing 1.07 such viewers, the most for a Saturday Original Movie since Megafault in October 2009. Overall, the ratings for these movies are up 8% from 2009. The next such movie is Mothman, airing Saturday, April 24th, a horror movie about the legendary flying man of West Virginia. (I just watched Mothman, which stars Firefly's Jewel Staite.

Trying something new as a way to at least acknowledge all the DVDs and other screeners I receive, cuz no matter my best intentions, I can never get around to reviewing all of them. These, though, I gotta review: Gamera: The Giant Monster: The Japanese language original, with new English subtitles, in an anamorphic widescreen presentation. Coming from Shout! Factory on May 18. Mega Piranha: Obviously, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (which I still haven’t seen) set some sort of standard -- 80s pop star (in that case, Debbie Gibson) meets monster. Cuz this one stars Tiffany. Debuts on Syfy on Saturday, April 10 at 9pm Eastern. Mothman: Sounds like sort of a sequel to that terrible Richard Gere movie The Mothman Prophecies. Or maybe not. Stars Firefly’s Jewel Staite. Debuts on Syfy on Saturday, April 24, at 9pm Eastern.

And we, the biggest of the big genre nerds, couldn't be happier. Many thought the channel jumped the shark with the change from Sci-Fi to the SyFy network but execs at the newly branded SyFy channel want us to know otherwise...

This past weekend gave us Dinoshark (review here), the trailer for the Syfy bound Dinocroc vs. Supergator just went live, and we're all chomping at the bit for Sharktopus; but what else does Syfy have in store for viewers? Glad you asked. A new slate of Saturday night creature features has been announced, and I can tell you about a few others, too.
First up, let's just quote from Syfy's own press announcement (note that we've previously reported on a few of these):

Syfy announced its slate of original movies for the 2010-2011 season, including the promised "Sharktopus."
"Riverworld," based on the classic sci fi novels by Philip Jose Farmer, is a four-hour movie event that stars "Battlestar Galactica's" Tahmoh Penikett and "Smallville's" Laura Vandervoort.
The story centers on the greater part of humanity that lived on Earth suddenly finding themselves resurrected on a terraformed planet known as Riverworld. Among these people are war correspondent Matt Ellman (Penikett) and his fiancee (Vandervoort), both of whom had been killed and now find themselves alive and kicking, although separated. Matt enlists the help of Mark Twain (Mark Deklin) and a 13th-century female samurai warrior Tomoe (Jeananne Goossen).
Another four-hour movie event, "The Phantom," premieres in June and reimagines the classic comic strip. Ryan Carnes stars as Chris Walker/The Phantom, along with the legendary Isabella Rossellini as the villainous Lithia.

No relation to the awful Mothman Prophecies movie (if you ever read the book, then you know why I just described the film as awful; and if you have never read the book, you should and then you, too, will realize why the film was so lame), Syfy has finally checked off enough other cryptids from its list to make a new film about the Mothman starring a "Firefly".
Not much is known about the plot of this Syfy-bound Mothman movie simply titled Mothman other than the glowy-eyed cryptozoological entity in this version also kills people, which I guess is a major step up from crank calling people in that terrible Richard Gere movie. Don't expect this one to adhere too closely to the facts of case either.
