The book Earl is frequently seen reading is "The Last Man" by Mary Shelley, which was first published in 1826. The physical book itself used in the film was a copy of the story owned by director Paul Sliwinski. The front and back cover of this copy were removed and art director Amanda Bloome created a custom jacket of her own design for the book to be used as a prop during filming.
