The next season of “Sesame Street” is being brought to you by the big, red letter “N.”

Netflix announced a deal Monday with Sesame Workshop, producer of the iconic kids’ show, giving the streamer exclusive worldwide premiere rights, starting with Season 56 later this year. Netflix also gains rights to 90 hours of past episodes of the show and will also be able to develop video games for both “Sesame Street” and “Sesame Street Mecha Builders.”

In the U.S., episodes of “Sesame Street” will continue to be available day-and-date on PBS stations and across PBS Kids digital platforms.

Sesame Workshop’s deal with Netflix comes after Warner Bros. Discovery did not renew its five-year deal for “Sesame Street” streaming on Max/HBO Max.

CoComelon, the kids’ YouTube phenom that generates 2 billion views a month with its animated nursery rhymes, has partnered with Hollywood heavyweights like DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures to bring its first full-length film to theaters.

Parent Moonbug Entertainment–which was acquired by former Disney/TikTok exec Kevin Mayer‘s Candle Media for a reported $3 billion in 2021–says the movie will be CG animated and “inspired by the blockbuster children’s show.” Moonbug will produce alongside Flywheel Media, Prime Focus Studios, and DreamWorks Animation, with animation done by Dneg Group and distribution by Universal.

“Fans will follow JJ and his friends on the big screen for a new adventure,” Moonbug says.

The children’s animation phenomenon CoComelon is set for the big-screen treatment after touring with a live production and drawing a big following on streaming platforms.

Moonbug Entertainment, the company behind the hit preschool show, and Flywheel Media have greenlit an animated CoComelon feature film with Universal Pictures to release movie in theaters in 2027. The CoComelon franchise centers on JJ and his best friends as they navigate and celebrate preschoolers’ special life milestones. That includes dealing with the scaries, taking care of a pet and going to your friend’s place for the first time.

With its vivid animation and focus on earworm sing-along songs, CoComelon has become a worldwide hit with around 4 billion average monthly views on YouTube. On Netflix, it is regularly ranked among the streamer’s top children’s shows, and the franchise has also expanded on to music streaming platforms Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.

Moonbug Entertainment, a part of Candle Media, and Flywheel Media have greenlit the first-ever CoComelon animated feature, a theatrical extension of the massively popular kids’ series, which will be released by Universal Pictures in 2027.

The CG animated film will be produced by Moonbug Entertainment, Flywheel Media, Prime Focus Studios and DreamWorks Animation, with animation by the Dneg Group. No word yet on a writer, director, or cast.

Moonbug, the family content machine behind the Netflix juggernaut “Cocomelon,” has enacted a small round of layoffs.

Sources estimated that less than 5% of the company will be impacted, and that pink slips will come for roles in Los Angeles and London. Another source said the brunt of downsizing will hit in-house writers for series and other content, and the company will pivot to a freelance model for those jobs.

“As we continue to plan for 2025 and beyond, we are making changes to our studio team to allow us to be more nimble across aspects of our productions. This means a small number of roles across London and L.A. will be impacted. We’re deeply grateful for the contributions of these employees and wish them nothing but the best,” a spokesperson for Moonbug told Variety.

Netflix has picked up streaming rights to Glitch Studios‘ megaviral animation series The Amazing Digital Circus—but, unlike with most deals it signs, it’s giving up exclusivity and isn’t going to pull Tadc off original home YouTube. In fact, moving forward, all episodes of Tadc will premiere for free on YouTube and for subscription on Netflix on the very same day.

Netflix has done this sort of deal before with preschool hit Cocomelon, which also found its first home on YouTube and drives 2 billion views a month there. As part of that partnership, Netflix developed its own exclusive Cocomelon series, Cocomelon Lane, but also airs the same content folks can find for free on YouTube.

While the most-watched seasons of TV during the six-month interval included “Fool Me Once,” “Bridgerton” Season 3, “Baby Reindeer” and “The Gentlemen,” a group of winners have arisen from the data dump, including children’s TV as a whole — including “Peppa Pig” — “Young Sheldon” and buzzy crime docs like “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal.”

As the streamer continues to bolster its live event programming, the success of “The Roast of Tom Brady” followed in the footsteps of “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” as it found an eager audience, whereas the first-ever livestream of the SAG-AFTRA Awards earlier this year didn’t do much for Netflix, viewership-wise.

Look, there’s no way around this: August is a slow month for TV, and Netflix isn’t any different. Splashy fall TV is right around the corner, but August seems best designed to catch up on some of the best TV of the year so far that you may have missed.

It’s not a total wasteland, however: “Emily in Paris” returns this month for Season 4 Part 1. The internet loves to make fun of it, but the dreamed is truly one of the best brain-dead shows to watch when it’s too hot to do much of anything else. Lily Collins wears the most amazing outfits! There’s lots of kissing! Why do you think you’re better than it?! Much like other recent Netflix hits such as “Bridgerton,” “Emily in Paris” Season 4 will be divided into two parts, with Part 1 dropping August 15 and Part 2 debuting a month later.

“The Roast of Tom Brady” debuted with a bang on the Netflix Top 10.

Despite not premiering until the evening of May 5, when it aired live on Netflix, it was the streamer’s sixth-most-watched English-language TV title of the April 29-May 5 viewing window. In its first few hours of availability, the roast hit 2 million views. And it wasn’t the only live event from Netflix Is a Joke fest to make the chart this week. Katt Williams’ stand-up special “Woke Foke” actually outperformed it as the No. 4 title with 4 million views — though it had the benefit of longer availability, having aired on May 4.

The Jerry Seinfeld-directed movie “Unfrosted” debuted on top of the English-language film chart, but with 7.1 million views in its first weekend, this marks the lowest viewership for a No. 1 film since Netflix began ranking by views in June of 2023.

The 1998 “Seinfeld” finale drew 76.3 million viewers to NBC, which made it the fourth-most-watched series finale in TV history. Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted” opening weekend on Netflix was not that, but it was number 1 on Netflix in its debut, notching 7.1 million views on 11.3 million hours viewed.

The (mostly fiction) comedy film about the invention of the Pop-Tart wasn’t quite a hit with critics (to say the least), but it so far has popped with audiences, probably in part because of the obscene amount of press Seinfeld did leading up to its release.

“Unfrosted” beat out Sony rom-com “Anyone But You” in views, but not hours viewed — the Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney flick is eight minutes longer than Seinfeld’s. The most-watched title of the week overall was “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” the follow-up to Zack Snyder’s 2023 film “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.” The movie hit 21.4 million views in its first three days of availability, putting it slightly behind “Part One,” which reached 23.9 million views in the same amount of time. The release of “Part Two” also gave a boost to “Part One,” which returned as the No. 5 English-language film with 5.5 million views. Also notable on the film chart was “Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp” and “What Jennifer Did,” which hit 18.8 million and 16.3 million views in their first full weeks of availability.

When Netflix released its first-ever Engagement Report — a revealing look into what (and how much) people are watching within the streamer’s film and TV catalog — live-action adult and young adult series like Ginny and Georgia, The Night Agent and Fubar were among those that topped nearly a billion hours watched.

But between January and June 2023, seasons of animated originals Sonic Prime, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, My Dad the Bounty Hunter and The Creature Cases also ranked among the 500 most-viewed series (out of 18,000), as did acquisitions like Paw Patrol, CoComelon, Pj Masks and Peppa Pig.

And while much of the streamer’s most popular animated content came from its kids and family programming, the report reveals new and previously released seasons of adult animation and anime entries like Castlevania, Love, Death & Robots, Bee and Puppycat, Disenchantment, Big Mouth, and Skull Island were among the top 22 percent of watched titles.

Fewer originals dedicated to kids and more free content on YouTube seem to comprise the current strategy for streamers like Netflix.

YouTube comprises a fascinating piece of the current media puzzle. The video hosting platform is a huge draw for audiences, especially those who are comfortable with streaming video as opposed to watching on linear TV. According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal that indicates that YouTube’s share of streaming viewership among kids 2-11 is 33%, while Netflix’s is just 21%.

YouTube has a higher percentage of total TV time among all audience segments than any streaming service. The problem is particularly acute for streamers among kids, who are increasingly preferring YouTube to subscription video services. Streamers are combatting the trend by uploading more content to YouTube to meet customers where they are, and by making fewer originals geared toward kids. As the year winds down, it’s time to look back at Netflix’s biggest hits, and today, we begin by looking into what kids’ TV shows picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s over the past 12 months.

This list is compiled using FlixPatrol data collected from the daily top 10s on Netflix from over 80 countries around the globe. They assign points and values to each title that gets featured on any day. Their data isn’t perfect as their method doesn’t quite fully capture the complexity of viewership data, such as total watch time, repeat viewings, or demographic details of the audience. Also worth noting is that Netflix changed up its top 10 metrics midway through the year to favor views over pure viewing hours. That said, their data provides a pretty accurate snapshot of what performed best over a long period.

Squid Game: The Challenge may not be as big as the show that inspired it, but the competition series still got off to a very strong start.

Netflix’s unscripted offshoot of its most popular series of all time scored a strong opening in the Nielsen streaming rankings for Thanksgiving week. Adam Sandler’s animated movie Leo claimed the top spot overall, and Young Sheldon also joined the top 10 after making its Netflix debut.

Squid Game: The Challenge drew 1.42 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Nov. 20-26. It was the top streaming series for the week, beating out Bluey (1.17 billion minutes) on Disney+, and finished second overall behind the 1.53 billion minutes for Leo.

From The Crown: Season 6, CoComelon Lane: Season 1 to Squid Game: The Challenge: Season 1 and more have been on the list, and most of them have been on it in the previous weeks, while there have been a few new entries too.

Netflix has entertained viewers with various new series from around the world. In the recent past, South Korean dramas have been gaining a lot of popularity, and the leading streaming platform makes sure to bring in some of the best K-Dramas for the fans.

The Crown Season 6 Part 2 came out on December 14th, and before the final part of the last season dropped, people binge-watched the sixth season and made it secure a spot on the Top-10 Most-Watched Web Series list for the fifth time.

“Leave the World Behind” opened with a bang as the apocalyptic thriller cracked the Netflix Top 10 during the Dec. 4-10 viewing window at No. 1 on the English Films list with 41.7 million views, making it the most-viewed title this week as viewers attempted to dissect that final theory in director Sam Esmail’s adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel of the same name.

Starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Myha’la, the film landed on the streamer on Dec. 8 following its world premiere at AFI Festival on Nov. 22.

The film was followed by “Family Switch,” starring Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms, which scored the No. 2 spot on the English films chart with 18.6 million views, then Adam Sandler’s animated comedy, “Leo”

Moonbug Entertainment, the kids’ entertainment powerhouse behind the hit “CoComelon” franchise, is bringing on board its first chief marketing officer: Peter Stone, a nine-year veteran of Netflix.

In the new role, Stone will be responsible for Moonbug’s global marketing strategy, as well as the evolution and growth of its brands. He will be based in Moonbug’s London office and starts Dec. 6, reporting to co-founder and CEO René Rechtman.

Stone joins Moonbug as the company says its brands “continue to see significant expansion.” Among recent developments, it called out Blippi’s debut on Roblox, “Morphle” soon launching on Disney+ and Disney Junior, and the new CoComelon show “CoComelon Lane” launching exclusively on Netflix.

Moonbug is part of Candle Media, the next-gen rollup play headed by ex-Disney execs Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, backed by private-equity firm Blackstone Group. Candle acquired Moonbug in 2021 in a deal worth about $3 billion.

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a challenge at all.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” dominated Netflix’s overall leaderboard in its debut week, when it drew 20.1 million views. The unscripted competition series picked up where the I.P. left off in 2021, bumping Part 1 of “The Crown’s” sixth season to second place (8.8 million views) for the week of November 20, 2023.

“Squid Game: The Challenge,” filmed in the UK, is an English-language series; Og “Squid Game” was a Korean-language series dubbed into local languages. As such, the scripted show technically rests atop Netflix’s “Non-English” list, though it blows away all the English-language stuff anyway.

“The Challenge” was so big it brought “Squid Game” back to the Global Top 10 for non-english series — at no. 6 with 1.6 million views — its 21st appearance. The scripted show hadn’t made the list since the week ending June 19, 2022. The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend sure helped the streams pile up.

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.

With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

All the Light We Cannot See...

Netflix’s slate for November 2023 has much to offer as the transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving and eventually Christmas begins. Many favorite movies such as Jennifer Garner’s “13 Going on 30” and “The Big Lebowski” arrive Nov. 1, while Garner’s new movie “The Family Switch” rounds out the month when it arrives on the streamer Nov. 30. Other can’t-miss film arrivals on November first include “Whiplash,” “Sixteen Candles,” “The Social Network” and “Pitch Perfect.”

Several new seasons of Netflix shows arrive this month as well, the most highly anticipated of which might be “The Crown” Season 6 Part 1. The first half of the final season of the royal drama series arrives Nov. 16. The limited series adaptation of “All the Light We Cannot See” by Shawn Levy and Steven Knight launches November 2. Levy directed all four episodes of the epic drama series, adapted from the Pulitzer prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr.

November on Netflix is peppered with curiosities for just about everyone. This month will see the long-awaited adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s award-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See hit the streamer. Directed by Shawn Levy (The Adam Project) and starring Mark Ruffalo, the limited series will tell the emotional story of a blind French girl who meets a German soldier in the final days of WWII.

Elsewhere, Netflix will unveil its first expansion of its planned Squid Game universe with an actual competition show that will challenge 456 players to be the final winner of no less than $4.56 million. Netflix has revealed the premiere date and trailer for its first CoComelon original, ordered more episodes of Gabby’s Dollhouse and announced three preschool series set in the worlds of Hot Wheels, The Wizard of Oz and Universal’s classic monsters.

CoComelon Lane, the streamer’s first foray into original programming with Moonbug Entertainment, will debut its first nine 21-minute episodes globally Nov. 17. Along with revealing its premiere date on Thursday, Netflix dropped the show’s first trailer, giving fans a first look at JJ and his best friends as they navigate and celebrate preschoolers’ special life milestones. That includes dealing with the scaries, taking care of a pet and going to your friend’s place for the first time.

Netflix will debut a Teletubbies reboot in November as part of a slate of shows aimed at young kids debuting in the coming months. The show will feature the four Teletubbies interacting and discovering their world — and will be narrated by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Tituss Burgess.

Teletubbies is set to premiere Nov. 14.
