Comedy sequels are notoriously difficult to pull off, but there are a few exceptions to this rule that have kept fans laughing. Comedy movies tend to derive a lot of their humor and conflict from a particular situation, and once the story is wrapped up, there is no logical reason to bring the characters back for more. This is why a lot of comedy sequels feel overly contrived, or unrelated to the first movie.
While unnecessary comedy sequels have sadly become the norm, this just makes it even more exciting when a sequel lives up to the standards of the original. Not all movies are set up for sequels, but comedy can often get more creative. Audiences will forgive comedies for coming up with silly premises as long as the movies are just as funny. If a comedy sequel gives beloved characters a fun new story that plays to their strengths,...

Peter Gallagher speaks the following line in the new movie by CW actor Ryan Eggold: “Don’t dick me around, guy. Last year, Todd Rohal’s “Uncle Kent 2” premiered at SXSW to positive reviews, with IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn calling it “the craziest movie sequel ever.” A follow-up to Joe Swanberg’s 2011 film “Uncle Kent,” a portrait of indie actor and animator Kent Osborne, “Uncle Kent 2” follows Osborne’s quest to come up with a sequel to “Uncle Kent” by traveling to a comic book convention and confronting the end of the world.

Joe Jonas learned there's a not-so-glamorous side of rock 'n' roll too when he was forced to use a porta-potty just like the rest of the crowd ... at his own concert. Joe's band, Dnce, performed in Miami Sunday at Model Volleyball, which is exactly what it sounds like. Just a guess, but ... getting to watch hot athletic chicks in bikinis frolic in the sand all day should take the sting out of the nasty bathroom experiences.

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with The ABCs of Death 2. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

Patton Oswalt will host the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which as per usual will go down the afternoon before the Oscars in Santa Monica (which in 2014 means March 1st). Oswalt follows a well-received hosting gig from Andy Samberg last year (though Indiewire had a few issues with the ceremony beyond Samberg). The actor-comedian (recently seen in "Young Adult," "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" and "Nature Calls") is a promising choice given his reliably excellent standup, though he'll also need to be prepared to intervene if booze-fueled speeches get out of control again this year. The nominations for the awards come out on November 26th. Check out Indiewire's predictions here.

Rob Riggle has signed on for one of the last major roles in Universal's comedy sequel Dumb and Dumber To, which is currently shooting in Atlanta.
The actor is actually taking on a dual role, portraying Travis, a handyman, and his unstable twin brother Captain Lippencott. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne from 1994's Dumb and Dumber, who hit the road once again to find Harry's long-lost daughter, who is in need of a kidney transplant. We first reported on the sequel's story last August, although it wasn't known which of the duo's child it was until now.
The supporting cast includes Kathleen Turner, Brady Bluhm, Laurie Holden, Rachel Melvin and Steve Tom.
Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly are directing from a screenplay the co-wrote with Bennett Yellin and Mike Cerrone. Sean Anders and John Morris wrote an earlier draft of the script.

A scouting-themed comedy starring Patton Oswalt and Johnny Knoxville, Nature Calls is about a failing scoutmaster looking to honor his dad and former scoutmaster's legacy by having one last big scouting trip. David Gordon Green produced Nature Calls, and it's not unlike his previous producing/directing efforts in that there are adults cursing at children. Historically, this is comedy I like, but typically only if the cursing is done by Danny McBride. Adults and kids involved in bad behavior is always a plus, but everything feels stilted here. However, the kids are quite good, especially Regan Mizrahi as Kent, who revels in hitting on Maura Tierney's character.

Chicago – There are some undeniable comic talents in Todd Rohal’s “Nature Calls,” including two of the best stand-up comedians of the last decade—Patton Oswalt and the late, great Patrice O’Neal. Rob Riggle and Johnny Knoxville can work in the right material. This wasn’t the right material for any of the four as it’s just a mediocre, generally unfunny comedy that leads one to question what the cast saw in it in the first place.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
My guess is that an incredibly smart actor like Oswalt thought this could be something like “The Bad News Bears” in the way that film used a talented cast of young actors and didn’t treat them like your typical movie kids. Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Pina" (Criterion Collection) What's It About? Director Wim Wenders ("Paris, Texas," "Wings of Desire") tells the story of Pina Bausch, an acclaimed German dance choreographer and instructor who passed away just days before the start of the planned documentary; Wenders films her most celebrated works on the streets of Germany and on a stage filled with waterfalls, sand and the wild elements of earth. And he shot it all in 3D. See It Because: "Pina" eschews the characteristics of a regular documentary and being able to witness her creativity in action -- with genuinely hypnotic 3D technology -- is the best tribute possible to a unique artistic identity. Lastly, It's a German 3D dance film. If you're not at least enticed on a visual level, we're not sure what to tell you. New on DVD & Blu-ray "Death Race 3: Inferno" What's It About?...

It's another week loaded with music and movie releases, and once again, the world's critics are here to express their opinions on which flopped.
In music Aerosmith has returned with "Music from Another Dimension." The album received lukewarm reviews with many critics highlighting the records production quality as a huge downside to overall work. Meanwhile, Ne-Yo's "Red" seemed to alienate him from the R&B sound for which he's best known; still, it was praised for holding several strongly produced songs. Rounding out this week's new music is Kylie Minogue's "The Abbey Road Sessions" which received some of the weakest reviews due to its stale and predictable sound.

Editor’s note: Yet another SXSW feature is hitting limited release, so please relieve yourselves with this Nature Calls review, originally published on March 11, 2012. Filmmaker Todd Rohal‘s third feature film, Nature Calls, returns to a world similar to that of his The Catechism Cataclysm – a world marked by complete madness by way of a poorly planned excursions to the outdoors. Rohal is again concerned with pushing the envelope, particularly when it comes to poking fun at organized religion, but a sweet edge of sentimentality and emotions sets Nature Calls apart from his previous outing. Unfortunately, Rohal’s film cannot quite join its disparate parts – wacky antics, inspired upbraiding of modern consumer life, physical danger, and fractured familial relationships – into one cohesive piece, and while the film’s laughs are frequent, they are fleeting and don’t have any weight behind them. Also, goddamn can this thing be offensive. Nature Calls centers on estranged brothers Randy (Patton Oswalt...

Curiously squandering an immensely talented cast, Todd Rohal's "Nature Calls," written when the writer-director lived in Austin, had more humor and humanity and life in its 10-minute post-screening talk here at SXSW than it showed in its previous 98-minute running time. Starring Patton Oswalt and Johnny Knoxville as brothers -- in a clear refutation of all we know about genetics -- "Nature Calls" pits Oswalt's dedicated scoutmaster, eager to take his scoutmaster father on one last camping trip, against Knoxville's black sheep son. You can imagine this premise leading to all kinds of hilarity. I encourage you to do so, as Rohal clearly did not. When his troop bails on a camping trip, Oswalt crashes a sleepover hosting Knoxville's adopted son Dwande (Thiecoura Cissoko) and his wayward troop members, abducting them, along with his father, for the originally-planned trip to the woods. Knoxville, Rob Riggle and the late Patrice O'Neal give.

This weekly column is intended to provide reviews of nearly every new release, including films on VOD (and in certain cases some studio releases). Each of the film’s 28 segments is introduced by a title card indicating the room number of the trysting place. In following...

I first learned of writer/director Todd Rohal when I saw his film The Catechism Cataclysm (or Cat Cat for short) at Sundance two years ago. You will either love or hate this film's guts -- I love it. I described this film as not a movie, but an experience, a bad acid trip gone awesome experience. (Note: I've never done acid but have seen Roger Corman's The Trip and am guessing it's bonkers.) Cat Cat was something I've never seen before -- an original, mind-fuck comedy adventure. His follow-up, Nature Calls with comedian Patton Oswalt, is something else for sure, but falls short of fitting into the wild and weird cinematic world Rohal has created.Randy (Oswalt) has lived and breathed boy scouting since the first...

In the comedy Nature Calls, Patton Oswalt plays a Scoutmaster who desperately wants the boys in his charge to love the outdoors as much as he does, so much so that when they opt to go to a sleepover, he crashes the party to convince them to sneak out and go camping with him instead. Oswalt's allergic-to-the-outdoors brother (played by Johnny Knoxville) freaks out when the kids aren't there in the morning and sets off in hot pursuit. This, of course, provided Oswalt with an opportunity to share his thoughts with Vulture about whether Mitt Romney would make a good Scoutmaster, the Internet stress syndrome that should bear his name, and what he has to offer postapocalyptic warlords. Are you okay? Sounds like you have a cold.I'm good. I just gobbled some DayQuil to try to find a balance between being stuffed up and not too spacey. Is that...

When you book Johnny Knoxville for a one-on-one, it's a safe bet to expect the unexpected. With our bet firmly placed, the "Jackass" star delivered just that during our chat with him at SXSW earlier this year. Knoxville's been to the festival before, but never for a film (he previously attended to support his cousin, musician Roger Alan Wade). For his inaugural official year at the event, Knoxville has two films: "Nature Calls" from director/writer Todd Rohal ("The Cataclysm Catechism") and Jonas Akerlund's star-studded ensemble drama, "Small Apartments." In "Nature Calls," Knoxville plays brother to Randy Stevens (Patton Oswalt), a Scoutmaster who essentially kidnaps Knoxville's kid for a weekend scout trip. "Small Aparments" finds Knoxville in dramatic mode, sporting a black shaggy wig as a pot-smoking loon, oblivious to the fact that his neighbor ("Little Britain" star Matt Lucas) is...

Title: Nature Calls Director: Todd Rohal (‘The Catechism Cataclysm‘) Starring: Patton Oswalt, Johnny Knoxville, Maura Tierney, Rob Riggle, Patrice O’Neal, Darrell Hammond and Thiecoura Cissoko Brothers often grow up fighting with each other, but when their rivalry continues well into adulthood, they often have trouble accepting the other’s seemingly foolish beliefs and antics. Such is the case with the two main characters in the upcoming comedy ‘Nature Calls,’ which will be released in select theaters on Friday. The brothers in the film are both losing things they believe in, and are experiencing crises of faith, but are still reluctant to accept that they’re old enough to at least acknowledge the [ Read More ]

Nature Calls
Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Maura Tierney, Patton Oswalt, Rob Riggle, Patrice O’Neal, Darrell Hammond | Written and Directed by Todd Rohal
Todd Rohal follows up his bizarre offbeat comedy The Catechism Cataclysm with another offbeat comedy in Nature Calls, which features an all-star cast including Johnny Knoxville, Maura Tierney and Patton Oswalt and tells the story of polar-opposite brothers Randy and Kirk who’ve never seen eye to eye. Randy is the assistant leader of his elderly father’s Boy Scout troop whilst Kirk loves his modern conveniences and his dozen TVs.
When Kirk (Knoxville) decides to have some of the boy scouts over for a slumber party ruining a pre-planned boyscout outing in a parking lot, Randy “kidnaps” the boys from Kirk’s to take them on camping trip to a restricted area in a local state park. Understandably, the kids parents don’t take so kindly to...

In this exclusive clip from the upcoming feature film "Nature Calls," Patton Oswalt is a scoutmaster who cares. Watch him get in a shouting match with Johnny Knoxville in full-on Mean Dad mode, while Rob Riggle offers some very convincing shouted interjections.
Sadly, the film also marks the last screen appearance of the late, great Patrice O'Neal (not seen in this clip).
"Nature Calls" was well received at the South By Southwest Film Festival when it played there in March. It hits theaters on Nov. 9 and is currently available on iTunes.

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Prometheus" What's It About? Ridley Scott returns to the world of "Alien" with an epic prequel about mankind's first contact with a mysterious alien race who may or may not be our makers, and may or may not have sinister purposes. See It Because: "Prometheus" pulled off a rare feat, adding a new layer of intrigue to the rich mythology of the "Alien" series. Not since "Inception" has a summer blockbuster come along with such audacious head-scratching concepts. And despite being filled with plot holes, it was still fun to argue about the film's big questions. Also, the always brilliant Michael Fassbender was terrific as David, an android servant with T.E. Lawrence-sized dreams of exploration. Watch Noomi Rapace's Screen Test for "Prometheus" - (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video | Netflix) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "E.T. If a fat kid really did rule the world, then a movie version of Kl Going’s 2003 book Fat Kid Rules The World would have hit cinema screens years ago. But it took actor-turned-first-time director Matthew Lillard (Scream, The Descendants) almost a decade to get his adaptation of the young adult novel in the can and a subsequent, successful Kickstarter campaign to guarantee a run in theaters. (The film opens this Friday at New York’s Cinema Village, followed by a nationwide roll out. Fat Kid Rules The World will also be available on VOD and iTunes on Oct. 25.)

Looks like comedian, actor and pontificator on the nature of geek culture Patton Oswalt is headed to Harlan County, Kentucky. TVLine reports that the "Nature Calls" star will have a recurring role in the new season of FX's acclaimed crime drama "Justified." He'll play Bob Sweeney, a local constable with whom Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) went to high school. Raylan hires Bob to watch his father Arlo's (Raymond J. Barry) house, and the promise of Oswalt being paired with the tough, sardonic Olyphant sounds like something to look forward to. The last few days have seen the trailer debuts of some promising flicks arriving in theaters in the coming months, among the most notable being the Patton Oswalt comedy Nature Calls, Director David O. Russell's drama Silver Linings Playbook (starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence), the Deepak Chopra documentary Decoding Deepak, and Sylvester Stallone's 2013 action flick Bullet to the Head. Also in the mix are a few flying under the radar like Alamo Drafthouse's amazing gift to film geeks, Trailer War, Matthew Lillard's feature-length directorial debut Fat Kid Rules the World, and Price Check (with Parker Posey). It's an eclectic selection if not always a promising one.

If the trailer's any indication, "Nature Calls," due out in early November, will offer a tale of wayward boy scouts considerably less sedate than Wes Anderson's stylized summer idyll, "Moonrise Kingdom." With bawdy favorites Rob Riggle and Johnny Knoxville front and center as two of the scouts' would-be wranglers, "Nature Calls" looks like an R-rated hybrid of Judd Apatow's "Heavy Weights" and William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." "Children don't live in the woods, they die," observes the incongruosly named Gentry (Riggle) near the end of the trailer. Though the film appears rife with nudity, violence and profanity, "Nature Calls" deals in material somewhat safer for satire than director Todd Rohal's last movie, "The Catechism Cataclysm," which bore the tag line, "God will fuck you up." Turns out Moonrise Kingdom isn't the only comedy this year that contains an overzealous but incompetent scoutmaster. But while Edward Norton's Scout Master Ward may have lost one member of his troop to a puppy love-inspired escape plan, the schlubby scoutmaster played by Patton Oswalt in the SXSW-selected Nature Calls can't keep even a single member of his Boy Scout troop from abandoning him. In the R-rated comedy, Oswalt stars as Randy, a troop leader who.despite his best efforts.can't get his scouts excited about survival skills or camping. As a result, his ranks are dwindling fast. But when the last of his scouts stand him up to attend a TV-themed sleepover at the home of his obnoxious brother Kirk (Johnny Knoxville), Randy decides if he can't win them back, he'll steal them back. And so, he kidnaps the boys, forcing them to go on the camping adventure...

Almost a year after Patrice O'Neal died - a week before his birthday, on November 29th, 2011 - Magnet Releasing will open the comedy Nature Calls in theaters and VOD on November 9; and with that news comes a brand-new trailer today. The raucous comedy, which as I note in the title, is/was/will be Patrice O'Neal's last film, stars Patton Oswalt, Johnny Knoxville, Rob Riggle, and Patrice O'Neal. Oswalt stars as Scoutmaster Randy Stevens, whose dwindling, apathetic troop ditches a scout meeting in favor of a TV-themed slumber party hosted by Randy's brother Kirk (Knoxville), his polar opposite and arch nemesis. Patton Oswalt and Johnny Knoxville play battling brothers in the Boy Scouts comedy “Nature Calls”. Curiously, I don’t think I saw one scout master molestation joke in the entire Red Band trailer. That’s, uh, kind of surprising when a movie doesn’t go for the sitter at the net jokes. What is this world coming to? Anyways, check out the Red Band trailer for “Nature Calls”, which is about foul-mouthed adults and their equally foul-mouthed kids. In short, it’s the kind of movie that will probably make you not want to have kids. Ever. Other than that, it does also star comedian Patrice O’Neal in one of his last roles, so if you’re a fan, this is probably a must-see. Polar-opposite brothers Randy (Oswalt) and Kirk (Knoxville) never saw eye-to-eye, but their rivalry is taken to a new level when Randy hijacks Kirk’s son’s sleepover,...

Magnet Releasing has put out a red band trailer for the new Patton Oswalt starring film, Nature Calls.
The film is both written and directed by Todd Rohal, and will star Patton Oswalt (Randy) and Jackass star Johnny Knoxville (Kirk) as two brothers who are constantly at odds. Their sibling rivalry is taken to new extremes when Randy hijacks Kirk’s son’s sleepover by taking the boys on a Scout trip to remember.
The cast, which consists of Patton, Knoxville, Rob Riggle, and Patrice O’Neal, excites me more than the plot, which looks to be just a simple throwback to the raunchy comedies of the 70′s and 80′s. But then again, Magnet Releasing is putting this out, and in my eyes they’ve put out some quality films in the past, so I may give it a try just based on that.
