Boy Kills World is helping to reverse a dismal Rotten Tomatoes trend for one of its stars. The action-comedy movie follows the title character Boy (Bill Skarsgrd) as he enacts bloody revenge on the people who killed his family in a violent post-apocalyptic future. The ensemble cast of the movie also includes Happy Death Day's Jessica Rothe, Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, X-Men's Famke Janssen, District 9's Sharlto Copley, Stranger Things' Brett Gelman, Old Spice commercial star Isaiah Mustafa, and the voice of Bob's Burgers' H. Jon Benjamin.

Rotten Tomatoes has calculated an official critic score for the movie during the weekend of the Boy Kills World release.

Exclusive: Quiver Distribution has unveiled release plans and a new trailer for its thriller Night Shift, making the directorial debut of brother filmmakers Paul and Ben China. Liza Lapira has signed on to the “Equalizer” reboot pilot currently in the works at CBS, Variety has learned.

She joins previously announced series lead Queen Latifah. In the new version of the series, Queen Latifah portrays Robyn McCall, an enigmatic figure who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn.

Lapira will star as Melody Chu, described as an edgy bar owner with a wry sense of humor and sunny disposition. Melody is a former colleague of Robyn’s, with whom she’s still great friends, and a highly decorated Air Force sniper in a previous life.

Liza Lapira (Unbelievable) has joined the cast of Dante Basco feature directorial debut The Fabulous Filipino Brothers.

Written by Basco and his brothers Darion Basco and Dionysio Basco, the feature is set in the brothers’ hometown of Pittsburg, Calif., a working-class suburb of Oakland. Starring Basco and his brothers (including Derek Basco), the dark romantic comedy weaves together four vignettes, narrated by their sister, Arianna Basco.

The story follows the brothers and their shenanigans. One of them ventures off to a cockfight for reciprocity while one flies to old Manila where an old flame is rekindled. Another brother delves into the hidden sensuality of Filipino cuisine, while the last brother, struggles to heal deep wounds and finds love in an unexpected package. Liza Lapira has been cast as a series regular opposite Heather Graham in ABC’s drama pilot The Hypnotist’s Love Story, based on the bestselling book by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty. The project hails from Graham, who will play one of the two leads and will executive produce; writer Katie Wech (Jane the Virgin); ABC Studios; and studio-based Mandeville Television.

Written by Wech, The Hypnotist’s Love Story centers on successful hypnotherapist Ellen, who, after a string of failed romances, is optimistic about her current boyfriend, until he reveals a disturbing truth: a stalker ex-girlfriend Sasha (Graham) who has been following him for years. Ellen finds herself intrigued and oddly thrilled by the stalker, entirely unaware that they’ve already met.

Homeland’s Elizabeth Marvel and Liza Lapira (9Jkl) have joined the recurring cast of Unbelievable, an eight-episode Netflix limited series from Erin Brockovich writer Susannah Grant, CBS TV Studios, studio-based producers Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly and Katie Couric.

Co-written by Grant, who will serve as showrunner, Michael Chabon (John Carter) & Ayelet Waldman (Applebaum), Unbelievable is based on The Marshall Project and ProPublica Pulitzer Prize-winning December 2015 article, “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong, and the “This American Life” radio episode about the same case, “Anatomy of Doubt.” It tells the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about having been raped, and the two female detectives who followed a twisting path to arrive at the truth.

When Steven Soderbergh set out to make Mosaic—a murder mystery surrounding a magnetic, commanding and complex female character—he had in mind one particular actress who can expertly convey all those traits with barely a blink: Sharon Stone. Uma Thurman is headlining Chambers, a Netflix TV series that will manifest as a 10-episode hourlong offering with supernatural themes.

Netflix gave the project a straight-to-series order back in January 2018. It is the creation of writer Leah Rachel, an actress who's been juggling creative duties, having written for the 2012 TV series, Audrey, and directed a few short films. Rachel will serve as co-showrunner with Akela Cooper, who wields more experience in that department, having written and produced shows such as Luke Cage, American Horror Story, The 100 and Grimm.

Famke Janssen and Robert Patrick have joined John Travolta and Morgan Freeman in the crime thriller “The Poison Rose,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Janssen will play Travolta’s love interest in the film. Former high school sweethearts, the two rekindle their romance when she hires him to investigate a murder. Travolta will play a private investigator who enjoys his share of drinking, smoking, and gambling, as well as women in distress.

George Gallo will direct from a script he wrote with Richard Salvatore, based on Salvatore’s novel of the same name. Salvatore will produce through his March on Productions with Jeff Elliott (“Imperium”), Oscar Generale (“Speed Kills”), and David Ornston. Sales launched earlier this year at the European Film Market with BondIt Media Capital and Sherborne Media Capital providing financing for the picture.

To see Sharon Stone in a movie these days is to be reminded of how much you’ve missed her since the last one. Her star quality is particular: a cool, crackling, slightly ribald confidence in her own charisma that hasn’t been especially well-tended, much less replicated, by Hollywood in the last 20-odd years. There’s no missing Stone in the course of “All I Wish,” at least, as she jacks up and soups up every last scene of Susan Walter’s devoted but beigely anodyne star vehicle, playing a feckless fashionista whose lifelong aversion to commitment hits a handsome stumbling block as she approaches the big five-oh. Skipping between the character’s variously shambolic birthday celebrations over the course of six years, this agreeable exercise in romancing the Stone hasn’t quite the teeth or the twinkle to match its inexhaustibly game leading lady.

Interspersed throughout Susan Walter’s “All I Wish” are a series of wildly jarring, totally inexplicable straight-to-camera monologues from the film’s various characters. One moment Sharon Stone’s Senna is flirting with Tony Goldwyn’s Adam, the next Ellen Burstyn is sitting in front of a black background talking about how every woman wishes for “better boobs.” These interstitials are demonstrative of an insecure filmmaker; rather than allow the film’s narrative to speak for itself, Walter has her characters simply state their feelings, philosophies, and theses.
