Gerard Butler's Has Fallen Action Series Has A TV Spin-Off Fans Need To Watch
Image
If you are looking for proof as to why Gerard Butler is the undisputed king of modern trash cinema, look no further than the "Has Fallen" franchise. The films -- "Olympus Has Fallen, "London Has Fallen," and "Angel Has Fallen" -- are modern-day throwbacks to the politically incorrect action fare of yesteryear, with Butler's Secret Service agent, Mike Banning, blasting and stabbing his way through terrorists while protecting the President of the United States. A fourth film, "Night Has Fallen," is currently in the works, but the franchise has also expanded into the world of small-screen entertainment with a spin-off set in France.

"Paris Has Fallen" doesn't feature Butler's one-man army, but it's still an entertaining, violent thriller that will appeal to fans of the film saga. The story follows Vincent Taleb (Tewfik Jallab), a protection officer to France's Defense Minister, and Zara Taylor (Ritu Arya), an MI6 agent,...

‘Duster’ Review: Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson Lead J.J. Abrams’ High-Octane, Low-Impact 1970s Crime Romp for Max
Image
Many questions were raised when Warner Bros. initially announced “HBO Max” (and then “Max”) as the name of its big streaming platform.

The first and most obvious question was, “Why take a brand name as established and curated as HBO and dilute it with proximity to this much corporate flotsam and jetsam?”

Somewhere among the top five questions, though, was “Wait, can you use ‘Max’ when HBO already has ‘Cinemax’ as a corporate sibling?”

HBO’s disreputable younger brother, Cinemax attempted to shed or expand on its “Skinemax” reputation with a fairly successful run of originals between 2011 and 2019, a small group that included Strike Back, Banshee, The Knick, Warrior, Quarry and Jett. Cinemax originals were gussied-up B-movies in the best way possible — pulpy genre exercises with one or two-word titles perfect for splashing across posters or battered, well-read paperbacks.

Cinemax specialized in grindhouse TV and when HBO Max launched, Cinemax...

Ransom Canyon's cast and plot might echo the success of another favorite Western
Image
Creating an interesting TV soap that generates millions of viewers is an art in itself. It requires a great evolving plot (often based on a book or a series of books), an unusual location, and something that can carry it. Such a concept was a great success for Yellowstone, and Virgin River did well, too.

Now, following this concept, starting April 17, 2025, Netflix began showing Ransom Canyon, another such series. The 10-episode series is created, written, and executive produced by April Blair and features a big-name cast starring Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, James Brolin, and many others.

The first two episodes were directed by Amanda Marsalis. While the initial critics' opinions are mixed, the audiences don’t seem to be bothered much so far, as it is topping or is close to the top of viewers' lists in many countries.

What is Ransom Canyon about?

The comparisons with Yellowstone abound here,...

Surface Season 2, Episode 2 Review: Tables Turn on Sophie With 1 Surprise
Image
Quick LinksSurface Season 2, Episode 2 Continues to Move at Its Own PaceSurface Proves That Quinn Huntley Is a VillainSurface Season 2, Episode 2 Brings Back a Major Character

The following contains major spoilers from Surface Season 2, Episode 2, "Speak of the Devil," now streaming on Apple TV+.

Surface Season 2, Episode 2, "Speak of the Devil" is aptly titled, because it reminds Apple TV+ viewers how terrible some of the characters are. This is definitely an episode tilted in favor of the antagonists -- or at least the Huntley family, who are made out to be just as conniving as Sophie Ellis believes they are. But all of their scheming pales in comparison to what happens in the final scene.

"Speak of the Devil" picks up not long after the Surface Season 2 premiere left off. Callum Walsh suggests to Sophie that she try and find her way into Quinn Huntley's engagement party, which leads to another confrontation between Sophie and Eliza.

Exclusive: “The cat and mouse dynamic is really good,” says Jason Watkins. “It’s a game where these two men are almost stalking each other,” adds Robson Green.

When Patrick Harbottle (Green) moves into a home on his street recently left empty when the occupier suddenly dies, Miller becomes convinced his new neighbor is the killer, thanks to three little words.

“The way Patrick says, ‘catch you later’ triggers something within Huw, who thinks he has his man,” says Green, star of shows such as Grantchester and Strike Back. “Patrick is over-friendly, and Huw feels everything is not quite what it seems.

'Ransom Canyon' Is Netflix's New 'Yellowstone'
Image
Move over Paramount, Netflix is coming for your audience of Western fans. The biggest streaming platform is trying to capture the spark that Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone, Landman, and other series have ignited by creating their own Western franchises. The year began with American Primeval, an epic Western thriller about the Utah Massacre, and while it wasn't critically acclaimed (though MovieWeb loved it), it was certainly popular. Now comes Ransom Canyon, which cynics may call a Yellowstone rip-off, but which seems poised to certainly attract a strong audience. The synopsis reads as follows:

"Created, written, and executive produced by April Blair, Ransom Canyon is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country."

“At its core, Ransom Canyon isn’t just a town. It’s an idea. It’s the painful longing for your first love.

Paris Has Fallen Makes Me Really Miss This Classic 2000s Thriller Series
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for Paris Has Fallen below!Paris Has Fallen has made me intensely nostalgic for a certain real-time thriller series from the 2000s. I'm a fan of the Has Fallen movie franchise and was naturally intrigued when Paris Has Fallen was announced. I'm a little disappointed that the show didn't confirm my fan theory that Gerard Butler's Banning would become the U.S. President, but the first season is still a pulpy, well-paced thriller with a great villain performance by Sean Harris. It also reminds me of shows like Strike Back or 24 with its combination of action, procedural, and character drama.

Shows with that mixture are becoming rarer, and Paris Has Fallen gets the balance just right. Each episode has a race against the clock alongside plot twists and action scenes - but it still finds time to flesh out the characters too. While it doesn't...

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Appear in Kevin Smith Movies As Payback for Forgetting Him in Their Oscar Speech
Image
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, two of a generation’s most decorated filmmakers, have appeared in an inexplicable number of Kevin Smith films. Both have acted in Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot — none of which are likely to show up in their Oscar retrospectives. (You can add Mallrats and Clerks III to Affleck’s IMDb.) Why do they keep popping up in Smith’s comedies — including possible roles in his could-be-maybe-it’s-happening Dogma 2?

It’s all thanks to the advice Smith gave the duo when they wrote their Oscar-winning screenplay, Good Will Hunting. Affleck and Damon took Smith’s advice and improved their script — then completely forgot to thank him when they accepted their Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. “I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 fucking years, which is why they...

The 4:30 Movie Is Kevin Smiths Heartfelt Ode to Love, Youth and the Movies
Image
The following contains spoilers for The 4:30 Movie, which is currently in a limited theatrical run.

Fans of podcaster, writer and director Kevin Smith usually know what to expect from his movies. Snappy dialogue, dirty jokes, pop culture references and what can only be described "Stoner Humor." However, this is not exactly what they'll get from his latest directorial effort The 4:30 Movie, filmed at Smith's childhood movie theater (which he now co-owns). Set in the summer of 1986, Smith's coming-of-age film centers around a group of friends as they grow up together and bond over their shared love of film.

Perhaps best known for Clerks and the characters Jay and Silent Bob, films in Smith's oeuvre all embrace a specific tone and style. His most recent efforts, Clerks III and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot can easily be identified -- lovingly or derisively, depending on one's view of the filmmaker...

Image
The following contains major spoilers for Duchess, now available digitally.

Duchess marks the welcome return of Philip Winchester to the action genre. Though the actor is more recognized for his network TV roles like litigating on Law & Order: Svu, his biggest and best parts have come in action-oriented projects. He has the great ability to fully develop a character while also making a running gunfight look easy, which is one of the strengths in Neil Marshall's gangster film.

However, Winchester's screen time in Duchess is cut short when his character Rob is murdered -- his death serving as the inciting incident that kicks off the title character's quest for revenge. In an interview with Cbr, the actor spoke about returning to the genre that he's so comfortable in. He also dished on learning about Rob's fate and how complicated it was to film the all-important death scene.
