Animated shows can be some of the most imaginative programs on streaming and network television. They are often known for creativity in style, direction, and storytelling, which can be a breath of fresh air in the limited scope of live-action television, particularly the ones in the anthology format.
Anthology animated series with a new cast of characters and plot lines every new episode or season weren't that common. However, in recent years, anthology animated series have grown in popularity, with shows like Netflix's Love Death and Robots and those that build on existing IP, like Marvel's...What If?. However, this episodic-based storytelling format can prove a challenge for some anthologies, which struggle to maintain viewers' attention without a stable cast or unified storyline. The best animated shows in the anthology format not only attract a stable base of fans but perform well critically for their uniqueness in the market.

Strange Planet comics hilariously depict cats as aliens on a world full of strange beings and odd creatures. Cats in this comic strip look like normal felines from Earth, sparking a wild theory that they are extraterrestrial visitors. Real-world conspiracy theories about cats being aliens are humorously backed up by Strange Planet's portrayal of these mysterious pets.
Strange Planet is a relatively new webcomic that has expertly adopted the classic comic strip style to tell short-form stories featuring blue beings that describe everyday, mundane actions in overly specific and hilarious ways. These beings exist on another world, their very own strange planet, meaning the lifeforms on that world would be considered alien to humans. Well, almost every lifeform, which is exactly how Strange Planet secretly confirms one wild conspiracy theory about cats.
Created by Nathan W. Pyle, Strange Planet features a number of strips with a heightened focus on cats.

Strange Planet offers unique humor through precise wordplay and unapologetically quirky characters, subverting traditional sitcom expectations. The show's explicit and honest approach to dialogue, combined with a clear stream of consciousness, creates refreshing and entertaining interactions. Strange Planet's use of incongruity theory and expertly crafted scenes results in witty, concise character lines and humorous conversations.
As fans of Nathan W. Pyle's web-based comic of the same name already know, Apple TV+'s Strange Planet differs from typical sitcoms, animated or otherwise. Where most of its contemporaries work off of innuendos, sight gags, or over-the-top gestures to create humor, the show relies heavily on wordplay and the subversion of it. Consequently, Strange Planet and its characters engage with each other and its audience in the frankest, most literal sense. This supplants expectations of what comedy can be by explaining each minute detail and thought in technical terminology.

Dan Harmon has established a pretty neat little entertainment empire, creating the beloved cult hit "Community" before co-creating "Rick and Morty" and overseeing Apple TV+'s "Strange Planet" and Fox's "Krapopolis." But it's been a rocky road to success for Harmon, who was previously kicked off his own show before being rehired, and in 2018 had to publicly apologize for his prior mistreatment of "Community" writer Megan Ganz — and those are just a couple of examples of the man's controversies. Despite these debacles, however, Harmon has been an entertainment mainstay for well over a decade at this point, and during that time he's not only managed to create several of his own successful shows, but he's also apparently been fairly influential in perhaps the biggest Hollywood success story of the modern era: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rick Sanchez just closed a major chapter of his life on Rick and Morty, and he doesn't know what will happen next.
Following the end of season seven's fifth "Unmortricken," showrunner Dan Harmon spoke to Variety about what Rick's currently feeling after finally killing Rick Prime. Though he avenged his wife's death, Rick also allowed a returning Evil Morty to hold onto the schematics of a weapon called the Omega Device, which allows the wielder to erase anyone from existence in all universes. Harmon then likened this choice to Rick giving "a leash that's around his neck to someone that isn't him, because he's more invested consciously in the destruction of himself. I think that's both tragic and also, writers and drunks like me consider that kind of noble and interesting — the commitment to self destruction."

Season 7 of “Rick and Morty” is the first volume of the Adult Swim animated sitcom, a “Back to the Future” riff tracking the adventures of a mad scientist and his bumbling grandson, not to star co-creator Justin Roiland as the voice of both title characters. The network fired Roiland in January after the actor was charged with domestic violence; though the charges have since been dropped, an NBC News report last month alleged a pattern of inappropriate sexual conduct. In between, the roles of Rick and Morty were recast with soundalikes Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden, a monthslong saga that culminated with the debut of a Roiland-free show on Sunday.
All this behind-the-scenes upheaval might suggest “Rick and Morty” would return a markedly different show. But “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” is almost pointedly normal, collecting various fixtures of the “Rick and Morty” universe — not just Rick and Morty themselves,...

Strange Planet is a new animated series from the co-creator of Rick and Morty. Combined with a unique animation style, the series tackles many current trends. Strange Planet is a beautiful show that's art is at its heart.

When fans think of animation this day and age, it's either high concepts, elevated art or profanity-laced stories that try to tell nuanced adventures. Some, a bit too on the nose, when subtlety would work just fine. As good as it is, Rick and Morty is a prime example of going too heavy, as well as the likes of Solar Opposites. Endings of shows usually demand another season when certain characters could come back together, an ominous plot point gets left open or the story lends itself to more world-building. Apple TV+’s “Strange Planet” adaptation of Nathan W. Pyle’s webcomic contains all three.
Season 1 ended with a literal cliffhanger.
The owner of cliffside diner Careful Now (Lori Tan Chinn) accidentally blows a hole near the restaurant with fireworks. It’s up to the Careful Now manager (Hannah Einbinder) and their new love interest, the regular customer (Danny Pudi), to find a solution to the thick fog that spews from the hole. The fog obscures the eclipse that populace celebrates on Double Shadow Day.
At the end of the day, the hole is filled by flipfloppers (pancakes) and Double Shadow Day is seemingly saved. But when the owner begins eating the pancakes, the fate of “Strange Planet” inhabitants is left uncertain.

There was a time, not too long ago, when Dan Harmon shared absolutely everything.
His bowel movements inspired tweets and Tumblr entries, his dysfunctional relationship with his then-partner powered hours of podcasts, and his firing from Community, his own cult TV creation, fueled a 21-city bus tour and later a documentary. A life of transparency, he reasoned, was therapeutic, healthy even for a guy who’d routinely describe himself as self-loathing and self-destructive.
Then the culture changed. “It stopped being punk rock to just say anything,” says Harmon. And he changed, or at least he tried to change. He embraced actual therapy and largely retreated from the public eye, shuttering both his popular podcast and his prolific Twitter feed. He found love in his personal life and balance in his professional one, and then he watched it all come dangerously close to vanishing as his past caught up to him.

Dan Harmon’s new adult animated series “Krapopolis” finally debuts Sunday evening after years in the works at Fox. The Covid-19 pandemic prompted the show’s staff to shake up virtually every step of development and production, from a virtual writers’ room to a Zoom table read.
Just before the pandemic hit the U.S. in March 2020, Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn encouraged Harmon to dust off an old idea the “Community” creator had shared about a show set in ancient Greece, but had yet to explore.
“Dan had this idea to do a show in ancient Greece, and that was about it — that’s all we had,” executive producer Steve Levy told TheWrap. “Dan loved the world, and was a myth buff when he was a kid and really took to the stories. We were like, ‘sure, we could explore that world,’ [but] we really didn’t have anything.”

The beings who populate Nathan W. Pyle's Strange Planet are inherently cheerful beings, but there are few things that bring them more pleasure than their feline companions. Humor comics have a long history with cats, from Far Side's beleagured pets to Garfield's lasagna-loving star, and Strange Planet is no different, with a host of strips that celebrate (and gently mock) their feline subjects.
Indeed, Strange Planet loves cats so much that it has an entire book - Strange Planet: The Sneaking, Hiding, Vibrating Creature - dedicated to the story of a parent and child (aka Lifegiver and Offspring) studying the animal and imitating its habits, coming to such conclusions as "it is covered in thousands of soft fibers and its mouth stones are sharp!" However, it all began with Pyle's webcomics, which rarely go for long without a cat-centric entry. Here are the 20 best - more than enough...

Beneath the idiosyncrasies of the animated show “Strange Planet,” originally created by comic artist Nathan W. Pyle, lies a message that Pyle hopes stays with the show’s viewers.
Five episodes of the cartoon comedy are now streaming on Apple TV+. The show, adapted from Pyle’s two books with the help of Dan Harmon and Steve Levy, has covered several characters — called beings — on the planet introduced in the opening sequence and song. Subplots include the dismantling of a rock band, cat-sitting gone awry, a cliffside restaurant named Careful Now that may or may not fall into a bottomless void and more.
“We wanted to find the right balance between anthological, a completely new story every time, and some recurring characters, a world that you’re seeing more than once. I think we succeeded, not perfectly, but I think we succeeded. The hope was defined as well. Reasons and...

We are almost there, folks. We are coming ever closer to that magical day when the calendar proudly says October. Shudder is preparing for that day with the most original films they've put out all year. It's weird to think that most of these films would have been released to theaters and garnered moderate success in times past. But with streaming, this is where they end up.
So, what is on the radar for September? Lots of originals, as mentioned, with the usual assortment of resurrected titles trying to see the light of day once more. A little body horror was thrown in there for good measure.
Nightmare (September 29)
Care to chance a Shudder original? This film initially went by the name Marerittet if you're struggling to find it. A Shudder original, this one looks promising with a young couple having a rough go of it. While her husband is game for having a family,...

Strange Planet is a kind and wholesome show that emphasizes the importance of kindness and support for others, which is consistent with the message of Nathan W. Pyle's comic. The transition from comic to animated series may not have been smooth, as the show feels like a collection of comics rather than a cohesive narrative. The intensely literal language that made the comics funny becomes tiresome when used in every episode. Fans of Dan Harmon's other shows, like Rick and Morty, may be disappointed by Strange Planet, as it lacks the dark humor and sarcasm typically associated with his work. The show offers a charming and positive look at humanity, but it may not attract a strong fan base.

It’s not hard to understand why Dan Harmon would have been drawn to Nathan W. Pyle’s Strange Planet comics for his latest TV project. Harmon’s Community and Rick and Morty are beloved for the ways they experiment with genre, tone, and sheer self-awareness. But once you strip away the formal playfulness, both shows are most obviously concerned with how society works, on both large and small scales. Community was called that not because the characters were all attending community college, but because Harmon wanted to show how...

Ever since Apple TV+ revived Charles M. Schulz's beloved Peanuts franchise in 2019, they have captured the spirit and look of the classic comic strip and animated specials. Directed by veteran animator Raymond S. Persi, who has helmed recent Peanuts specials for Apple TV+, the franchise continues to embrace its timeless appeal while relating more and more to modern audiences and the challenges they face.
With Franklin's tenure as class president at the local elementary school nearing its scheduled end, the Peanuts gang faces several lingering issues at their school that require a natural problem-solver to fix. Apple TV+ brings fans a new animated series, Strange Planet, as a great replacement for Rick and Morty during its hiatus. Co-created by Dan Harmon, it offers a taste of his comedic style and provides an alternative with a similar interdimensional, obscure humor. Strange Planet explores the lives of blue beings in human situations, showcasing the humor in everyday things that may seem out of place to them. With tamer and less cynical humor, it still caters to Rick and Morty fans eager for the show's return. Both Rick and Morty and Strange Planet feature non-human beings and satirical commentary on life, but the latter takes a more wholesome and gentle approach while maintaining a strange and bizarre feel. Despite similarities, Strange Planet aims to carve out its unique space in the animated comedy genre.

Existence is absurd.
At least, that’s what Nathan W. Pyle believes. Birthed out of his very cute and very literal comics, Pyle’s upcoming Apple TV + series “Strange Planet” dares to grapple with the oddity that is life and how we all manage to get through it.
Since the start of 2019, Pyle has been drawing the webcomic series under the same name. Little alien-like characters he called the Beings lived in shades of pink, blue and purple, trying — in a very matter-of-fact way — to process emotions and the difficult stages of life we all go through. Pyle traded words like alcohol or food for “mild poisoning” and “sustenance,” or hug for “limb enclosure.” In just four little squares, Pyle was able to poke fun at the strangeness of human life by rewiring the way people think about language. Freeform takes a bold step into adult animation with its new original series Praise Petey, created by former Saturday Night Live head writer Anna Drezen. The show follows wide-eyed girl-boss Petey St. Barts as she inherits the leadership of her late father's cult somewhere in the American South, ready to move the cult away from its more murderous and morally questionable traditions. Despite Petey's best efforts, her inexperience after living in the big city and some of the more practical elements of this strange society complicate her attempts to reform the cult.

“Strange Planet” is a simple show, and purposefully so. Based on the popular comic strips by Nathan W. Pyle, who co-created the Apple TV+ series with “Rick & Morty’s” Dan Harmon, the half-hour animated episodes chronicle common human experiences through an alien lens of heightened objectivity. Characters aren’t human beings, they’re just “beings”. Their world isn’t Earth, but it follows the same general rules. There may be machines that can generate an infinite supply of pancakes and good social etiquette doesn’t seem to require wearing pants, but there are still cats and dogs, planes and buses, parents and children.
The twist (if you can call it that) is that on this strange planet, cats are called “tiny vibrating creatures.” Planes are “flying machines,” buses are “group roll machines,” and parents are “lifegivers.” Many common objects and activities are given new names, which helps to illustrate...

Adapted from Nathan W. Pyle’s renowned graphic novel Strange Planet Apple TV has introduced a ten-episode comic series bearing the same title. The production of this series is helmed by none other than Dan Harmon, the creative mind behind the popular show “Rick and Morty.” The essence of the series lies in its portrayal of human narratives, cleverly presented through the lens of extraterrestrial beings from an alternate realm. While the outward presentation might suggest a children’s show, it’s important to note that adults can wholeheartedly revel in its content, engaging themselves in profound introspection after watching it.
Strange Planet presents an alternate reality, home to “beings” hailing from a distinct celestial sphere. Although they share some parallels with our universe, their world shows some interesting divergences. Paralleling our evolutionary course, language, and emotional experiences, they’ve forged a society that defies traditional gender norms, fostering a culture of unreserved acceptance.

If you’re unfamiliar with Nathan W. Pyle’s Strange Planet comics, they usually go something like this: Two unnamed balloon-headed aliens engage in a brief chat about whatever they’re doing. The activities themselves are usually mundane — hiking, snacking, petting a cat. What’s odd is the way they talk about them, with a frankness that so much of human language and culture has been designed to avoid.
“We have things but we have hidden them,” a couple announce to guests entering their just-cleaned home. “Now feel completely helpless,” a dentist tells a reclining patient. Suntans are “star damage,” a kiss is a “mouthpush,” tea is “hot leaf liquid.” The cleverest strips turn the banal alien, and occasionally tap into the bigger fears undergirding all these deceptions and distractions: “Life will be full of unpleasant sensations,” a parent gently reprimands a child refusing to eat their “leaves” (i.e.

Set in St. Louis during the height of prohibition, Lackadaisy focuses on the titular speakeasy and its employees as they struggle to keep their business afloat (and stay alive) amid conflicts with dangerous gangsters and deadly rivals. Created by Tracy J. Butler in 2006 as a webcomic, the Eisner-nominated Lackadaisy fuses, fuses a period crime-thriller with a charming and beautifully illustrated sense of style. Embracing an anamorphic design that recalls the work of Walt Disney and Don Bluth, the comic is a stunning piece -- and has only increased in notoriety thanks to an animated pilot that went online earlier in March 2023.
Directed by Fable Siegel (The Midnight Gospel), the pilot -- used to garner attention for crowdfunding aimed at funding a full season -- was a rousing success upon release. At the time of this writing, it's already earned over $1,000,000 from online backers, with a full season now in the works.

For as complicated and mysterious as existence can be, sometimes a simple explanation can put things into perspective. Celebrating a birthday is just acknowledging that the planet is in the same place in the solar system as it was when that person “emerged.” Getting a promotion is just being rewarded for being responsible with more responsibilities. When discussing things in plain language, everything seems more absurd, but also more manageable. If having anxiety makes someone want to scream, why wouldn’t they just scream and move on? For the beings in Apple TV+’s Strange Planet, sometimes it really is just that easy.

Competitive, regular season football is still a month away, but last week saw the beginning of the NFL preseason, meaning every week between now and February will feature a college or NFL football contest on TV.

Apple TV+ series Strange Planet explores the absurdities of our everyday life, highlighting the bizarre aspects we've grown accustomed to. Adapted from the graphic novel by Nathan W. The adorable animation, witty satirical comedy, and charming voice cast make Strange Planet one of the most relaxing and calming shows on TV, suitable for all ages despite being labeled as a kid's show.
When you stop and think about it, our everyday life is pretty weird right? The fact that we celebrate another year of life with our birthdays, the importance of pop culture and celebrities, how we keep what were once wild and dangerous creatures as pets, how we drink the mother's milk from a different species, and even how odd air travel can be.
