Today, at the Annecy Animation Festival, former Head of Reel FX Originals and Paramount Animation vice president Jared Mass announced the first project at Chalkdust Animation Studios, a new CG label based in Atlanta, Ga. focused on real-time, virtual production for film and TV projects.
Chalkdust’s debut project, “Boxen: The Childhood Chronicles of C.S. Lewis,” weighs in as a serialized adaptation of Lewis’ first-ever short stories, written with his brother when he was still a child. Financing for the first season has already been finalized by Noble Road Media, a new Atlanta-based organization formed by Michael Carney, who will executive produce with Mass and Vincent Sieber-Smith, co-director of The C.S. Lewis Company.
Production of “Boxen” will feature a mix of traditional animation tools, motion capture and cutting-edge software. It’s a production pipeline that Mass is familiar with from his time producing Netflix’s “Super Giant Robot Brothers” at Reel FX Originals.

A prequel to the hit musical Grease, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies features a talented young cast telling the origin story of the infamous titular girl gang. Created by Annabel Oakes, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies releases on Paramount+ on April 6, 2023. While the 1978 musical film starring John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John took place in 1958, the prequel show begins four years earlier in 1954. Boasting similar great costumes and catchy songs, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies centers on four underdog teenage girls coming together to live life on their own terms and rule the school.
Many elements of Grease haven't aged well, from its lack of diverse characters to its sexist ideals, none more prominent than the film's climax in which Sandy (Newton-John) transforms her entire look and personality to make her relationship with Danny (Travolta) work. However, the musical also had elements of progressiveness, as the Pink Ladies,...

When Oscar-winning animation director Mark Andrews (“Brave”) called his old Pixar pal Alex Mandel about his latest gig, “Super Giant Robot Brothers,” Mandel was 6,700 miles away in New Zealand managing projects for visual effects house Weta Digital.
Mandel, whose other creative side happens to be classically trained composer, dove into Andrews’ new project and created more than three hours of music for the series now airing on Netflix.
“Super Giant Robot Brothers” is a 3D animated action-comedy from Reel FX about massive metal robots destined to save the world from invading kaiju – giant monsters from space – while trying to overcome their own sibling rivalry. Andrews, a drummer who used to jam with guitarist Mandel at Pixar events, suggested the musical style: synthwave.
Synthwave combines heavy metal with ’80s synthpop, adding ’90s production elements for a retro-meets-modern approach that reminded Andrews of the Japanese animated series he watched as a kid.

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.
