‘Self-Help’ Teaser – ‘Founders Day’ Director’s Cult Horror Plays Mind Games [Exclusive]
Erik Bloomquist
Filmmaker Erik Bloomquist (Founders Day, She Came From the Woods) is back with new horror movie Self-Help, and the first teaser plays mind games with Halloween-set cult horror.

Self-Help makes its International Premiere on August 23 at FrightFest London.

In Erik Bloomquist’s Self-Help, “A young woman infiltrates a dangerous self-actualization community after her mother becomes entangled with its enigmatic leader.”

FrightFest’s description provides more details, “Members of an underground online community attend a secret weekend retreat to confront their fears and regain their sense of self. But little do Olivia, and best friend Sophie, realise her mother has become romantically entangled with its enigmatic leader. And little do any of them know that the unusual, self-actualisation methods he adopts to teach his dangerous life lessons may be deadly. Hold on tight for a close encounter group of the most twisted kind!”

This Underrated Slasher Film That “Upends expectations” Is Now Streaming for Free
Image
If you dig a slasher film with a dose of retro energy and a smart setup, I have a recommendation that will likely be right up your alley. I’m talking about Founder’s Day, a sorely underrated film from the Bloomquist brothers (Erik and Carson Bloomquist). In my review of the film, I said, “Like She Came from the Woods did before it, Founders Day frequently upends expectations… It’s clear that the Brothers Bloomquist have a knack for subverting that which viewers are likely to anticipate.”

As you can probably tell from my enthusiastic endorsement, I had a fun time with Founder’s Day. Although the flick doesn’t quite rise to the level of the brothers’ previous film, She Came from the Woods, Founder’s Day is nonetheless an enjoyable slasher that pays homage to celebrated efforts like Scream.

The setup for this slasher goes like this:...

Terrifier 3's Rotten Tomatoes Score Just Broke 11 Records
Image
Terrifier 3 has already broken a whopping 11 Rotten Tomatoes records. The film continues the story of sadistic killer Art the Clown, with a setting twist this time as Art the Clown continues his killing spree in a jolly Christmastime backdrop. It is the third feature film and fourth project within the Terrifier franchise, which began in 2011 with Damien Leones short film Terrifier. The Terrifier franchise has made a name for itself in low-budget horror by being excessively gory and gruesome.

At the time of writing, Terrifier 3 boasts an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes with 31 reviews so far. This score is subject to change, as Terrifier 3 is being released to a wider audience beginning on Friday, October 11. Still, critics are loving Terrifier 3 so far, praising its over-the-top nature and the true frights that Terrifier 3 provides. If Terrifier 3s 87% Tomatometer were not impressive enough on its own, it is even...

‘Project Dorothy’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Tim DeZarn, Adam Budron, George Henry Horton, Emily Rafala, Olivia Scott, Danielle Harris | Written by George Henry Horton, Ryan Scaringe | Directed by George Henry Horton

Project Dorothy opens with 1990s vintage footage of a huge factory with robotic machinery, smiling faces in the offices, and lots of forklifts. But something went wrong in this industrial paradise, we hear a voice talking about evacuation, followed by the sound of unseen people running and screaming. Then a final “I love you” as the lights go out.

Then “Many Years Later” two men James and his younger accomplice Blake are on the run after a bank robbery gone wrong. They were hired to get a laptop in the safe deposit box, and they got that. But James also got a bullet in the leg. Needing a place to hide, they break into a familiar looking building.

Just as the cop looking for...

‘Founders Day’ Review: Political Backstabbing Turns Literal in Semi-Comedic Slasher
Image
“Divisive” has become the fallback term for just about any political personality or issue in recent years, so bitter have differences between the two parties and many of their adherents become. The more fanatical beliefs to be found in an era of increasingly alarmist rhetoric have already provided inspiration for some horror movies, primarily smaller indie productions. The new “Founders Day,” which opens Jan. 19 on 700-plus U.S. screens, is slicker than most such while also more overt in pivoting on political rancor.

But you can’t make a pointed movie about politics — not even a semi-tongue-in-cheek genre film — without political content, and Erik Bloomquist’s feature proves toothless in that regard. Apparently afraid to offend anyone, despite numerous murders onscreen, it centers on a hostile mayoral race between candidates who posture stereotypically yet seem to have no discernible platform, ideology or affiliations on the liberal-to-conservative continuum. That renders the intended satire feeble,...

Founders Day Review | One Big, Bloody, Gavel-Banging Romp
Image
Character exploration takes a backseat to the bloody kills and political comedy in Founders Day — perfect for slasher film fans craving a quick fix. The unique masked killer, wielding a secret knife hidden in a gavel, provides thrilling and well-executed horror moments. While the film suffers from some overacting and empty characters, it remains a hellishly fun thrill ride that entertains with its reckless ambition.

Don’t expect deep dives into character exploration in Founders Day. Leave the plunging to the masked killer stabbing people with a secret knife hidden in the gavel they’re using a weapon. It’s all part of frenetic events plaguing the small town of Fairwood in the latest masked slasher film, which foregoes heftier character motivations and keeps its bloody feet firmly planted in the horror comedy subgenre.

That’s not a bad thing if you’re a slasher film fan looking for a quick fix.

Founders Day Review: Throwback Slasher With a Political Bent
Image
Moments into Founders Day, the latest film by co-writer/director Erik Bloomquist, two small-town teens, Allison Chambers (Naomi Grace) and Melissa Faulkner (Olivia Nikkanen), discuss the seemingly inevitable end of their high-school romance as they take a stroll on a desolate, nighttime bridge. Little do Allison and Melissa know, though, but they’re not in an indie teen drama or straight-to-streaming comedy. They’re right smack in the middle of a calendar-themed slasher and said slashing, dicing, and mallet-wielding masked killer shows up out of nowhere, leading, in turn, to the obligatory desperate fight for survival for Allison and Melissa against the killer. Not surprisingly, their encounter with a masked killer doesn’t go well. Allison somehow manages to survive, mostly...

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.

Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:

The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.

Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

Gaspar Noé’s ‘Irréversible: Straight Cut’ In Theaters, Distributor “Extremely Aware This Is An Extremely Tough Film” – Specialty Preview
Image
Diverse festival notables from Hannah Ha Ha to The Blue Caftan join a spattering of specialty horror titles led by Consecration, and the U.S. theatrical debut of Gaspar Noé’s controversial Irréversible: Straight Cut.

The last is presented by Altered Innocence, whose owner Frank Jaffe spoke with Deadline about why he wanted to give Noe’s unusual 2019 director’s cut — of the Argentinian/French director’s disturbing 2002 film Irreversible — a release Stateside. “It’s a film that needs to be seen. Or made available,” he said. StudioCanal approached him twice. “They said, ‘No one is brave enough to take on this film. Will you?’” And “there is an audience for it…Tickets are selling.”

Jaffe said he first watched Irreversible, or tried to, via Netflix mail order DVD when he was 14. “My dad made me turn it off halfway through.”

It had a big impact on him. He...

‘She Came from the Woods’ Review – The ’80s Slasher Returns With a Nostalgic Trip Back to Camp
Image
If you didn’t know Erik Bloomquist’s She Came from the Woods loves the 80s like Pac-Man loves Mrs. Pac-Man, the first few minutes should sell a tubular on-screen time warp. Hormonal camp counselors in short shorts prepare for summer’s end while Kim Wilde’s “Kids In America” blares over opening credits like any other Camp Crystal Lake or Camp Arawak copycat. Bloomquist imbues a love of 80s sleepaway horror titles into a contemporary take on Friday the 13th, The Burning, Madman — some titles are even name-dropped in dialogue. It’s hardly a modern satire like Cabin in the Woods but avoids feeling redundant through recreations of golden-age genre magic that’s gone out of style. There’s a passionate attempt to prove life can find new ways in a decade’s old slasher formula, and She Came from the Woods keeps the beat(ings) alive for now.

She Came From the Woods: Everything You Need to Know About the Slasher Film
Image
The horror genre is no stranger to films about summer camps where people invariably die in a variety of horrifying ways and the slasher subgenre of horror has regained popularity over the last decade. To add to the list, the indie filmmaker Erik Bloomquist has turned his 1980s slasher homage short film, She Came From The Woods, into a feature-length title with a script co-written with his brother Carson Bloomquist. She Came From The Woods uses the standard slasher clichés of the era in which it is set. They are used by the Bloomquists to either increase tension or completely defy expectations.

Watch the Trailer for She Came From The Woods

In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

Summer Camp Slasher Comedy 'She Came from the Woods' Trailer
Image
"Let's try not to die tonight." Mainframe Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled She Came from the Woods, opening in limited US theaters starting in February soon. It first premiered at FrightFest last year, but didn't hit any other fests in the fall. In this ode to '80s slasher horror, a group of dumb camp counselors accidentally unleash a decades' old evil on the last night of summer camp. As the mayhem and madness turn bloody, the staff of "Camp Briarbrook" are forced to confront what stories are worth telling and what secrets worth keeping. The horror comedy stars Cara Buono (from Stranger Things), William Sadler (Bill & Ted), Spencer List, Clare Foley, Michael Park, Tyler Elliot Burke, Adam Weppler, Ehad Berisha, Giselle Torres, and Dań Leahy. This looks, ahem, campy and not that scary but fun, another throwback riff on 1980s horror...

She Came from the Woods trailer: 80s-set summer camp horror film is coming to theatres
Image
Director Erik Bloomquist’s horror film She Came from the Woods is set to reach theatres on February 10th – tickets are already available for purchase at Regal, AMC, and Harkins – and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out on the big screen, we have the trailer embedded above. The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.

Image
Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales on European genre titles, Scandinavian thriller “Good Boy” and found footage film “Stéphane,” ahead of their world premieres at Beyond Fest.

“Good Boy,” which delves into the perils of the modern dating world, follows Sigrid who thinks she’s met the perfect match in Christian until she comes to find out that he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog.

As time goes on their jovial and eccentric talks become something far more sinister.

Frightfest 2022: ‘She Came From the Woods’ Review
Image
Stars: Cara Buono, Clare Foley, Spencer List, William Sadler, Michael Park, Tyler Elliot Burke, William Sadler, Adam Weppler | Written by Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist | Directed by Erik Bloomquist

A mysterious figure terrorises a camp full of teenagers in She Came From the Woods, a supernatural horror from director Erik Bloomquist, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Carson Bloomquist. Creepy, suspenseful and suitably gory, it’s a genre-savvy throwback to the summer camp slasher genre.

Set in 1987 (so no pesky mobile phones), the film takes place during the last night of the summer holiday at Camp Briarbrook, run by kindly Gilbert McAlister (William Sadler) his adult daughter Heather (Cara Buono) and her two teenage sons, irresponsible Peter (Spencer List) and sensible Shawn (Tyler Elliot Burke).

When Peter persuades the other teen volunteers to perform a ghost story ritual (a ridiculously simple one – prick your finger and shout “Agatha!”), he...

FrightFest 2022 Review: She Came From The Woods is a Fun and Entertaining Campfire Tale
Image
