Blu-ray.com has announced that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is unveiling a new 50th Anniversary 4K restoration Blu-ray with a batch of special features, which include the shortened VHS cut (which is remastered in HD) and a “special Japanese version.” This new physical media release is due to hit retailers on August 26.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has hired director Josh Greenbaum to helm a new Care Bears movie. Greenbaum recently won a Peabody Award for his 2024 documentary Will & Harper, which followed star Will Ferrell and writer Harper Steele on a 17-day road trip across the United States following Steele's gender transition. Greenbaum's other directing credits include the cult favorite Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and the adult-oriented animal comedy Strays. No writer is attached to Care Bears.

I just saw “A Minecraft Movie” and it was everything it’s hyped up to be — funny, entertaining, visually gorgeous, and (most importantly) great for kids and adults. The Caped Crusader's 80+ year legacy makes him one of the comic book heroes most open for interpretation. Per StarWars.com, an official sequel series, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past, was announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, continuing Sig Greebling and Jedi Bob's adventures in a world where the franchise's heroes and villains have flipped roles. New characters were confirmed via an official poster, partnering Sig with a massive Lego Chewbacca, a BrickHeadz-style Ahsoka Tano, and, most notably, EU comic-era Lepi smuggler Jaxxon. Before Hailey Gates made her Sundance-winning feature film “Atropia,” the young filmmaker was attempting to make a short film, “Shako Mako,” based on the real-life military training village she ended up depicting in the feature. The fashion brand Miu Miu, as part of its Women’s Tales filmmakers series, helped make it happen. The brand provided clothing, some financing, and other resources, but — above all — was hands-off with the creative.

Over the past decade or so, the bar for kiddie-brand-exploiting cinema has risen unexpectedly high. Both The Lego Movie and Barbie utilised cool writing-directing talent to push meta self-knowingness to new levels, delivering some great jokes and songs while also saying something meaningful. How do you follow that? For A Minecraft Movie, as its definite-article-avoiding title suggests, the answer is to not even bother trying.

This isn’t to say it’s lacking in energy. The movie is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) with a script from Drew Goddard. As revealed in the trailer — and likely familiar to anyone who has read Weir’s best-selling book — Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut sent on a longshot mission to save the planet as the sun begins to die. Ryan Gosling, looking very nerdy and quite un-Ken-like, plays a science teacher turned grudging astronaut in “Project Hail Mary,” a sci-fi adventure that Amazon MGM Studios teased during its presentation to theater owners at CinemaCon on Wednesday.

“I put the ‘not’ in astronaut,” Gosling tells the government handler (Sandra Hüller) who has tapped him to undertake a suicidal space mission. “I can’t even moonwalk.”

The film, an adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel of the same name, follows an ordinary man who is told he has what it takes to go into the outer reaches of the universe. “You have the right stuff,” Gosling tells Hüller. “I have the wrong stuff.”

He may be reluctant, but the situation is dire. A catastrophic event threatens life as he knows it. “The world is counting on you,” Hüller tells him.
