'Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2's Release Gets A Cryptic Update From Star Danny Huston
Image
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2's chances of getting a theatrical release are as tumultuous as living in the Wild West itself. Kevin Costner's self-funded passion project western hasn't quite revitalized the genre in the way the writer/director/actor probably hoped it would. Horizon - Chapter 1 was released last year to middling reviews from critics, although it found a strong and dedicated fan base after releasing on streaming. Horizon - Chapter 2 has already been shot and edited, and all that needs to happen is for New Line Cinema to pull the trigger on the sequel's release. Like the rest of the fan base, Horizon star Danny Hustonis equally eager to see the movie on the big screen, but even he doesn't know if and when it will happen.

Danny Huston recently spoke to Screen Rant to promote the digital release of Consecration, and the actor was...

‘Consecration’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Jena Malone, Danny Huston, Janet Suzman, Ian Pirie, Eilidh Fisher, Steffan Cennydd, Thoren Ferguson, Alexandra Lewis | Written by Christopher Smith, Laurie Cook | Directed by Chris Smith

How would the modern world respond if a fallen angel walked among us? Would science attempt to rationalise it, while religion clung tighter to dogma or would both implode under the weight of something truly unexplainable? These are the philosophical and theological underpinnings that Chris Smith’s Consecration grapples with, sometimes subtly, sometimes overtly, in what is arguably his most thematically ambitious film since Black Death.

Jena Malone stars as Grace, a determined and emotionally guarded ophthalmologist who is pulled into the cloistered world of Mount Saviour convent in the Scottish Highlands after the suspicious death of her brother, a Catholic priest. Her refusal to accept the official ruling of suicide propels her into a quietly escalating mystery, one cloaked in whispers of miracles,...

Consecration Review: Strong Performances Lost in a Muddled Plot
Image
Grace, an ophthalmologist’s assistant, exists in a world of measurable science and observable truths. Her life is upended by a call informing her that her brother, a priest, has died violently at a remote convent on Scotland’s Isle of Skye.

The official report is a murder-suicide. Grace’s immediate rejection of this fact is absolute; her brother was a man of deep faith, incapable of such an act. This disbelief propels her across a cultural and spiritual threshold.

She leaves the secular logic of her life behind to enter an isolated enclave of fervent Catholicism, a place where faith and horror are intertwined. Her quest for answers pits the modern, rational mind against an ancient, dogmatic institution.

The Ominous Convent and Its Keepers

The Mount Saviour Convent is a place of stark contrasts. Its oppressive stone walls are set against the wild, untamed beauty of the Scottish highlands,...

Jena Malone Faces Her Demons in Convent Horror ‘Consecration’
Image
Vertigo Releasing has announced that Christopher Smith’s religious horror Consecration will make its UK digital debut on 16 June, bringing a haunting tale of murder, memory and ecclesiastical corruption to audiences at home. The film stars Jena Malone as Grace, a trauma-stricken woman drawn into the labyrinthine secrets of a remote Scottish convent following the suspicious death of her brother, a Catholic priest.

Shot on location in Scotland and originally released in cinemas in early 2023, Consecration arrives digitally following a run that included a slot at the Glasgow Film Festival and a streaming debut on Shudder. Its UK digital release renews interest in a film that blends psychological tension with supernatural menace, rooted in themes of faith, guilt and the ever-thin boundary between devotion and delusion.

Malone, best known for her roles in The Neon Demon and The Hunger Games, takes on the role of Grace Fario, a doctor whose...

Before ‘Game of Thrones,’ Sean Bean Starred in This 72% Rotten Tomatoes Medieval Horror Thriller Climbing Streaming Charts
Image
Sean Bean will always be known for his role as Ned Stark in the first season of Game of Thrones, but before he ever suited up as a leader in the North, he teamed up with a Harry Potter star for a medieval horror thriller that’s climbing streaming charts. Bean stars alongside Eddie Redmayne in Black Death, the 2010 folk horror film set during the bubonic plague and following a young monk who is tasked with learning the truth about the carnage being wrought in a small village. Black Death premiered on Max at the start of the month, and the film has snuck into the #10 spot on the streamer’s rankings. Black Death earned a 72% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but general audiences gave it a 49%.

Bad Habits: 7 of Horror’s Scariest Nuns Ahead of ‘Immaculate’
Image
Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.

In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

The Horror Movie Scaring Up Netflix Should Be Your Next Watch
Image
Fans of religious horror have had quite a few films to choose from this year, with The Pope's Exorcist, The Nun II, Consecration, and The Exorcist: Believer. Catholic horror, particularly those involving nuns and exorcisms, have been consistently popular throughout the years, with varying degrees of quality. With such a rich and dark history, Catholicism as explored through the horror genre clearly still draws viewers in. Though it was never released in theaters, another Catholic horror film of 2023 that merits discussion is Sister Death (Hermana Muerte), which arrived on Netflix on October 27th. A prequel to Paco Plaza's 2017 film Verónica, Sister Death cleverly complements its predecessor but can still be viewed and appreciated as a standalone film. A captivating lead performance from Aria Bedmar, striking subversions of Catholic imagery, and the incorporation of real historical tragedy make Sister Death worth a watch for any fans of this popular horror sub-genre.

Frightfest Glasgow 2023: ‘Consecration’ Review
Image
Stars: Jena Malone, Danny Huston, Janet Suzman, Ian Pirie, Eilidh Fisher, Steffan Cennydd, Thoren Ferguson, Alexandra Lewis | Written by Christopher Smith, Laurie Cook | Directed by Chris Smith

How would the modern world cope with the coming of a fallen angel? How would science and religion collide and what if a “scientist” was in the centre of it all? Those are the questions Chris Smith’s Consecration asks.

Grace (Jena Malone) is summoned to the Mount Saviour convent deep in the Scottish Highlands following the mysterious death of her priest brother. Refusing to believe he committed suicide, and determined to discover what really happened, Grace starts her own investigation as the nuns prepare a consecration ceremony to purify the holy site. Soon she inadvertently shines a light on murder, sacrilege and a disturbing truth, relating to the forgotten years of her own childhood, intertwined with that of the convent’s holy...

Jena Malone in Adopting Audrey

Jena Malone is making breakfast when we talk: caramelised onions, scrambled eggs and mushrooms. It’s the start of the Glasgow Film Festival and she has a lot to get through, with two films screening there. One of them, Adopting Audrey, sees her play a listless young woman who forms an unexpected bond with a misanthropic man after deciding to explore the possibilities of adult adoption. In the other, Consecration, which is screening in the Frightfest strand, she’s cast as a woman with a troubled past investigating the death of her brother in a Scottish convent. They’re very different roles, and her ability to disappear into her characters is one of the reasons why she’s loved in the industry, even if it might make her a bit less visible to fans.

“Audrey is based loosely on a true story that Mike Cahill...

Frightfest Glasgow 2023 Interview: Chris Smith talks ‘Consecration’
Image
Ahead of the European premiere of his psychologically disturbing supernatural thriller, Consecration, at FrightFest Glasgow 2023, director Chris Smith talks about the supernatural side of religion, filming in Scotland, and his encounter with a pregnant sheep.

Chris Smith directing Consecration

Another FrightFest, another Chris Smith movie! Our destinies seem intertwined. Why has FrightFest always been a key component to your release strategy?

I feel very fortunate to have been brought into the FrightFest family. I was very lucky that my first film, Creep, was included and then I got very lucky with the dates of release of my subsequent films. Severance was shown the night before the festival started in 2006 and then of course there was the spectacular Premier for Triangle at the Empire Leicester Square. FrightFest has also shown Black Death and Detour. They didn’t bother with Get Santa but that’s their loss. FrightFest is the best audience for any director.

Warner Bros. Discovery Delays ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ Box Office Reports, Even Though It’s #1
Image
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (Warner Bros. Discovery) is #1 on the historically weak Super Bowl weekend. With distributors shying away from top new releases, and avoiding next week’s debut of “Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania” (Disney), the 51 million total for all films should be the low point for 2023.

It’s the first weekend this year to fall below the same date in 2022 (54 million). The year has been much improved so far, and momentum should return next weekend with the new Marvel film on a holiday.

The third time out for the male stripper franchise, again with Channing Tatum in the title role and with the return of original director Steven Soderbergh, grossed 8.2 million. Like last month’s “House Party,” this was a theatrical debut of a title initially anticipated for HBO Max. It opened in 1,500 theaters in top locations — smaller than a wide release, but enough to capture 80 percent-90 percent of its potential.

Box office: ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance” leads dismal Super Bowl weekend with just 8.2 million
Image
Super Bowl weekend has never been great for the box office, with only a few breakout hits over the years. This year, it was especially bad, and as usual, weekend estimates are exactly that: estimates, since it’s too early to determine how this year’s big game night affect Sunday box office.

Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault starred in “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third and presumably final chapter of the male stripper franchise with returning director, Steven Soderbergh. Warner Bros. only gave the movie a moderate release into only 1,500 theaters, while reviews were not great, sitting at 46 on Rotten Tomatoes. Warners didn’t report the movie’s Thursday previews or Friday take, which was later reported to be 4.1 million. Based on WB’s Sunday estimates, “Magic Mike” only made 8.2 million this weekend, averaging 5,467 per location, which was still enough to be the #1 movie over Super Bowl weekend.

Consecration Review: Jena Malone Anchors Compelling, Uneven Religious Horror
Image
Christopher Smith's Consecration has a plot that one could deem simple, but simple narratives are deceptively hard to pull off in horror. Smith and Laurie Cook’s script is layered with a mystery intertwined with supernatural and psychological drama. Their story is ambitiously attempting to tackle the darkness that surrounds the Church and exists within its characters. Unforgiving nuns and suspicious priests aren’t things that exist solely in horror, but Smith & Cook certainly lean into the unholy mythology of the Church that has been building for ages within the genre as well as real life. Ultimately, the tale is about one woman’s mission for the truth. As bloodied and haunted as Jena Malone's character gets, Consecration is a somewhat satisfying journey because Smith and Cook's script understands Grace is the anchor.

The film follows Grace (Jena Malone), an optometrist who identifies as an atheist. While she favors science and logic,...

Yet after decades of “Exorcist” knockoffs, moviegoers have been conditioned to anticipate the clichés of demonic possession. We expect them to be delivered, and in a certain way they always are. For moviemakers have been conditioned that way too.

Set in a remote seaside convent in the Scottish highlands, “Consecration” presents the audience with a sinister Mother Superior (Janet Suzman) who talks about God as if he were the devil. She leads a batch of young nuns who smile with too much cultish devotion (one wears an eyepatch because she dug her own eye out after she thought she saw Satan). We keep waiting for the other demonic shoe to drop — to see a nun possessed, or a group of them gathered in a secret ceremony to conjure the Beelzebub of their dreams. All...

Gaspar Noé’s ‘Irréversible: Straight Cut’ In Theaters, Distributor “Extremely Aware This Is An Extremely Tough Film” – Specialty Preview
Image
Diverse festival notables from Hannah Ha Ha to The Blue Caftan join a spattering of specialty horror titles led by Consecration, and the U.S. theatrical debut of Gaspar Noé’s controversial Irréversible: Straight Cut.

The last is presented by Altered Innocence, whose owner Frank Jaffe spoke with Deadline about why he wanted to give Noe’s unusual 2019 director’s cut — of the Argentinian/French director’s disturbing 2002 film Irreversible — a release Stateside. “It’s a film that needs to be seen. Or made available,” he said. StudioCanal approached him twice. “They said, ‘No one is brave enough to take on this film. Will you?’” And “there is an audience for it…Tickets are selling.”

Jaffe said he first watched Irreversible, or tried to, via Netflix mail order DVD when he was 14. “My dad made me turn it off halfway through.”

It had a big impact on him. He...

We’ve been tracking this week’s new releases all week long, with four horror movies debuting on Tuesday and two more debuting on Thursday. Believe it or not, we’re still not done.

Here are four more new horror movies released today, February 10, 2023!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

First up, director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight, Long Lost) is back with She Came from the Woods, an ’80s-set summer camp slasher movie that’s now playing in theaters.

We don’t yet have a home video release date, but we expect one soon.

She Came from the Woods follows “a group of counsellors who accidentally unleash an ancient evil spirit on the last night of a summer camp. As the situation turns bloody, the group is forced to confront what stories are worth telling and what secrets are worth keeping.”

‘Consecration’ Review: Christopher Smith’s Puts Mystery Ahead of Story
Image
Christopher Smith has proved time and time again that he’s a great director, capable of masterfully creating gloomy environments where confused characters must solve mind-boggling mysteries. Unfortunately, Smith’s screenplays are often too clunky, as he puts twists ahead of storytelling. As a result, Smith’s movies usually fail to deliver on their ambitious promises, betrayed by the director's eagerness to surprise the public. Even his most beloved film, 2009’s Triangle, has its fair share of inconsistencies that prevent it from becoming the masterpiece it could have been. Still, Triangle remains the most well-received entry in Smith’s filmography because of its gimmicky work, even when the story doesn’t. The same cannot be said about Consecration, Smith’s failed attempt to breathe fresh life into the tiresome Christian horror landscape.

‘Consecration’ Review: Jena Malone Defiles Some Nuns in Throwback Possession Thriller
Image
Nothing is more threatening to religion than a woman possessed. A woman in full possession of her own power, freedom, and mind can think for herself, can question male authority, and even create life. Women are typically the recipients of witch burnings, exorcisms, and speaking in twisted tongues; their capacity to be a vessel is both their power and their weakness. Perhaps that’s why the prickly focus of “Consecration,” a muted possession thriller set in an isolated Scottish convent, feels like such a blank slate, albeit a self-possessed one. Jena Malone brings a biting charm to her portrayal of Grace, but the story’s straightforward revelations end up feeling far too muted for the holy surroundings.

Directed and co-written (with Laurie Cook) by British horror maven Christopher Smith (“Black Death”), “Consecration” makes an artful attempt at telling a feminist revamp of a possession thriller. The minimalist story leans into the ornate Scottish Highlands surroundings,...

‘Consecration’ Review: Nuns And Demons And Scotsmen, Oh My
Image
One of the first things you see in “Consecration,” directed by Christopher Smith, is a nun with a gun. That nun is Mother Superior, the unhinged leader of a group of radical sisters in Scotland. She’s taking aim at Grace, an ophthalmologist with a troubled history. You’ll find out why eventually. Sort of.

For now, “nun with a gun” summarizes this film’s bizarre cocktail of severity and silliness.

Consecration Review: Christopher Smith’s Horror Feature Gets Lost in Its Own Design
Christopher Nicholas Smith
Christopher Smith’s films have often been obsessed, in one way or another, with time. From the recursive looping of his breakout Triangle to the branching narratives of Detour, Smith has built an impressive, albeit underappreciated collection of twisty thrillers. If 2020’s The Banishing represented something of a return to horror, then his newest, Consecration, acts as a continuation of that film’s obsession with narrative and spiritual fragmentation.

Following Jena Malone’s skeptical Grace as she travels to a remote convent to investigate the death of her priest brother, Smith’s latest is preoccupied with how the sins of the church are grafted onto individuals. Yet, like The Banishing, Consecration bears an underbaked premise that’s more interesting in its singular moments than as a complete film. Heavy on style and light on narrative clarity, almost nothing coheres.

Moody, but never as scary one would hope, it is ostensibly...

‘Consecration’ Exclusive Clip – Night Chase Gives Jena Malone a Grim Scare
Image
“Let the Badness Out.”

A nun mutters this as Jena Malone (The Ruins, The Neon Demon) finds her after a chase through the dark in an exclusive clip from Consecration. What follows gets macabre and unsettles her, but did it happen at all?

One thing is clear; there’s something seriously amiss at this convent. And more ominously, what is the badness that needs letting out?

The clip teases the latest mind-bending horror from Triangle, Black Death, and The Banishing director Christopher Smith. The psychological, convent-set horror film releases in theaters on February 10, 2023.

In Consecration, “Grace (Malone) goes to the Mount Saviour Convent in Scotland to find out what was behind the suspicious death of her brother, a priest. She is initially helped by Father Romero (Huston), but she soon comes to distrust the account of the church as she uncovers murder, sacrilege, and a disturbing truth about her own...

Jena Malone ‘Maybe Sold Her Soul to the Indie Film Devil’ — and Lived to Tell Many Tales
Image
It’s a long, treacherous road for child stars. Many don’t make it to adulthood unscathed, and rarely with a respected career to show for it. Much like Kristen Stewart or Daniel Radcliffe, however, Jena Malone has comfortably moved into a mature body of work that runs the gamut from auteur-driven indies (to stay relevant) with a smattering of popular studio fare (to stay afloat).

Once a precocious kid who brought unexpected gravitas to box office hits like “Contact” (1997) and “Stepmom” (1998), Malone successfully transitioned into arty indie darling with her turn in “Donnie Darko” (2001). Since then, she’s excelled in everything from horror to sci-fi to period comedies, bringing her unique screen presence to “The Neon Demon” and “The Hunger Games” without missing a beat.

So, what’s her secret?

“Maybe I sold my soul to the independent film devil, and I’ve been moderately sacrificing my blood every new moon or something.

Box office preview: ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ vs. 25th anniversary re-release of ‘Titanic’
Image
It’s Super Bowl weekend, as the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs with pop star Rihanna providing the half-time entertainment. Normally, studios wouldn’t release any prominent new movies on this weekend, since they know they would lose a lot of business to the Super Bowl, regularly the biggest televised event every year. Then again, Tuesday is Valentine’s Day, and there’s a chance that Saturday date night could be a good excuse for couples to see one of this weekend’s two romantic offerings. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Coming into the weekend is Channing Tatum’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” who is no stranger to the Super Bowl weekend, having starred in “Dear John” opposite Amanda Seyfried way back in 2010, which launched on Super Bowl weekend to the tune of 30.5 million. Tatum has reteamed with Steven Soderbergh for “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,...

‘Consecration’ Review – Jena Malone Anchors Convent-Set Psychological Horror Movie
Christopher Nicholas Smith
In terms of overlapping themes, Black Death and Triangle director/writer Christopher Smith picks up where he left off with 2021’s The Banishing for his latest, Consecration. A woman once again sees herself as an unwitting pawn of the Church and the horrors it births, keeping the psychological mysteries close to the vest. Only this time, its heroine is far more relentless in uncovering answers. The spiritual sibling feature falls into similar narrative pitfalls but is anchored by a compelling lead.

Grace (Jena Malone) favors science; she works at an optometrist’s office and identifies as an atheist. She’s the opposite of her estranged brother Michael (Steffan Cennydd), a priest that lives in a Scottish convent. Grace’s distrust of the Church and a startling emergence of terrifying visions prompt her to discover the truth when she receives word that her brother has committed suicide. She arrives in Scotland...

Consecration (2023) Review
Image
Plot: After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church’s account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege, and a disturbing truth about herself.

Review: Hailing from Scotland, Consecration provides a look at grief and identity. Jena Malone stars as Grace, a woman who’s struggling through life, even more so now that her brother has supposedly killed himself. She journeys to Scotland in order to take care of his affairs. But there’s clearly more to his death than it appears and sends Grace on a journey of discovery. What she finds may be surprising to her, but if you’ve seen any sort of horror movie, will be old hat to you. Because unfortunately, while Consecration looks good, there’s not much more beneath the surface.

I really love Jena Malone and could watch her in just about anything.

Posterized February 2023: Consecration, Sharper, Jethica & More
Image
2023 is in full swing with chaos (Cocaine Bear opens February 24) and sequels (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens February 17; Magic Mike’s Last Dance opens February 10) doing their thing to get those box-office numbers rising. Along with that studio fare, however, are a ton of smaller titles doing their best to keep up too. Hopefully your local theater has a screen or two to spare for some of these posters to grace the lobby–if Avatar also decides to slow down, of course.

Edge-to-edge text

Is the poster for 88 easy to read? No. Not at all. But I’ll be honest: that’s kind of why I like it. Because amongst those letters and numbers depicting financial gibberish are actor names like Orlando Jones and William Fichtner. Think of it as one of those memes where the first 3 names you see are the ones who will grace your screen when you buy a ticket.

12 Films to See in February
Image
With the Sundance Film Festival now wrapped up, offering our first glimpse at the 2023 cinematic offerings, eyes are now on Berlinale, which kicks off later this month. Looking at this month’s theatrical releases, it’s an eclectic mix of fest favorites (including the best film from last year’s Cannes and a pair of highlights from last year’s Slamdance), underseen gems, and a few auteur-driven studio offerings.

12. The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic (Teemu Nikki; Feb. 3)

A week before James Cameron’s 1997 box-office behemoth returns to theaters, we’ll see the release of an acclaimed festival favorite in which his Best Picture winner figures into the central narrative. Winner of the Orizzonti Extra Audience Award at the Venice International Film Festival, Teemu Nikki’s The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic follows Jaakko (Petri Poikolainen), a charming Finn who loves movies despite his blindness,...

Consecration: Release Date, Trailer, Cast, and Everything We Know
Image
Nuns have always been a source of mystery and trauma for religious-themed horror movies. They are driving forces in movies like Veronica (2017) and The Crucifixion (2017). Last year's Prey for the Devil saw the lead nun character, Ann, play the hero and final girl of the story, but movies like The Nun place the wimple-wearing women in a more menacing light. The Nun 2 is set to release later this year, but fans will get an early dose of convent chaos with IFC Midnight's newest film, Consecration, hitting theaters in February. Consecration isn't only centered on religious horror. It puts us in the mind of films like Shutter Island (2010), and A Cure for Wellness (2016), where the main character visits a remote community looking for answers and ends up trapped, terrorized, and driven to madness. Deeply hidden secrets are revealed and the psyche of the Pov character crumbles under questions of what is and isn't real.

FrightFest returns to Glasgow with an insanely bloody 2023 line-up
Image
Horror fans rejoice, for once more this March’s Glasgow Film Festival welcomes another weekend of wickedly fun international depravity, courtesy of the that all-too-reliable Ff banner. 13 films, over 3 days, with one positively freakish re-imagining of Winnie the Pooh as a serial killer; there’s never a dull year as far as FrightFest is concerned.

With this year’s line-up gathered together from all over the globe, spanning nine different countries including France, Spain, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands and Lithuania, as well as the usual British and American fare, there’s certainly a wide variety on offer too.

The one horror hounds will no doubt already be humming about is the cult-flavoured Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, a deliciously nasty slasher that pits everyone’s favourite cuddly characters from the Hundred Acre Wood against each other, in bloody fashion. With Pooh and friends now in the copyright-friendly public domain, expect director...
