The script was originally going to be made as "My Punjabi Nikkah" by Sohail Khan. This was in 2006. Salman Khan was playing the lead opposite Kareena Kapoor with Dharmendra and Feroz Khan as their father's. Katrina was then signed as Kareena's replacement. The film was put on hold due to several issue's. When the movie was revived in 2015 ,the script was slightly altered and Fawad Khan was in the lead. It was again put on hold for various reasons. Aayush was brought into the film in 2018. After the flopping of his debut film,again the film was put into the cold storage. Finally Karan Johar got the film's script from Sohail and altered it to make the Muslim Pathan family into a Hindu Bengali one. This was how Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani was finally made.
