References

    • Love Story (1970)

The story is similar to Arthur Hiller's hugely popular classic. In both movies we see a young couple fall deeply in love, then the woman becomes terminally ill and dies at the end, leaving her grieving lover alone.
    • Harold et Maude (1971)

The story and the main character are very similar to Hal Ashby's classic. Both characters like to attend funerals, are obsessed with death and fall in love with a quirky woman they meet there. In both films the woman becomes ill and dies at the end.
    • La Balade sauvage (1973)

Terrence Malick's influential classic is also about a couple of outsiders that fall in love. Explicit references to this film are in the soundtrack and the casting: Like "Badlands" this film features Carl Orff's music piece 'Gassenhauer'. Actress Schuyler Fisk is the daughter of "Badlands" lead actress Sissy Spacek and "Badlands" production designer Jack Fisk.
