Body horror is having something of a comeback. Titles like The Substance, The Shrouds, and even The First Omen and Alien: Romulus are updating classic templates with new, ooey, gooey bouts of body horror. It’s arguably the least accessible subgenre of horror, largely because it targets our innate revulsion. We see bodies in new, grotesque lights, yes, but it simultaneously reminds us of how vulnerable and soft our own bodies are. That’s why I can’t do eye gore, y’all.
There are several classics. Some, like The Fly, are award-winning. Others, like Excision, are grossly underrated. Wherever you fall on the scale of body horror (and how much your own body can take), there’s no denying it’s one of the freshest, most urgent subgenres around. Luckily, horror streamer Shudder just quietly acquired one of the best body horror movies of the century. You might have seen it before,...

Do you ever have one of those days that can be perfectly summed up by the lyrics of Limp Bizkit’s Break Stuff? Most of us have, especially anyone who’s dragged themselves to a shift at a dingy fast food joint. That is exactly the kind of day that Benson and Randy are having in the 2023 thriller, The Passenger, because anyone who interacts with this duo will have their life on contract.

The term body horror usually conjures up gruesome images that are guaranteed to heave your stomach and activate your gag reflex. It is not necessarily known for being subtle. In fact, it is generally considered to be the polar opposite: graphic, bold and demanding. However, in 2022's Swallowed, director Carter Smith somehow crafts the viscera of body horror while approaching the subject evasively. By doing so, he reveals a universal fear we didn't even know we had. While the queer themes in Swallowed's narrative are provocative and powerful, Smith has already proved his deft handle on sociopolitical ideas before, boasting an impressive directorial debut of the eco-horror The Ruins. As such, it is his innovative approach to body horror that steals our breath in Swallowed, demonstrating his mastery over turning a concept that is usually considered perverse into something more... tasteful.

Just a few days ago, Challengers director Luca Guadagnino revealed his plans for a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' seminal 1991 novel American Psycho. The success of the original film will be difficult to match largely due to Christian Bale's legendary performance as the progressively unhinged Patrick Bateman but Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story star Cooper Koch believes he's the man for the job, stating in a recent interview that he'd like to take on the role of Bateman as his next project.
It's no wonder that Guadagnino's plans for an American Psycho remake have already begun to make waves in Hollywood, given that the original film has become a major pop culture touchstone since its release in 2000. Although fans may have some difficulty imagining anyone other than Bale as American Psycho's iconic axe-swinging investment banker, Koch seems confident in his ability to handle the challenge.

Exclusive: Cooper Koch, the star of Ryan Murphy series Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story, has inked with UTA for representation.
Monsters centers on the 1989 murders of José and Kitty Menendez, who were killed by their sons. The show has racked up 53.6 million global views on Netflix since dropping on September 21.
Koch has raised eyebrows for his turn as Erik Menendez, specifically episode 5 of the Netflix series “The Hurt Man, in which he has a single 33-minute monologue. In that episode, there’s a slow zoom into Erik’s face as he details the 12 years of sexual, physical and mental abuse he claims drove him to patricide. Koch told Deadline that Murphy actually gave him a heads up about the monologue episode before signing onto the part. The actor had one rehearsal for it, with the episode getting shot over two days with a total of 10 takes.

Cooper Koch is no stranger to intense roles, having appeared in slashers like They/Them and body horrors like Swallowed. Its experience that almost certainly helped him when taking on his newest role in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. In the series, he plays Erik Menendez, a young man who brutally murdered his parents after alleging that he suffered sexual abuse at their hands for years. Nicholas Alexander Chavez has an array of television experience, also appearing in Ryan Murphys Grotesquerie, which is currently airing, and General Hospital, for which he won a Daytime Emmy Award. The skills hes honed over the years shine through in his role as the other brother, Lyle Menendez.

cooperFew things are more horrific than real life, something that Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story illustrates perfectly. Created by Ryan Murphy, this adaptation of true events follows a pair of brothers who plot to claim their family's wealth in the most violent way possible. The series has received many critiques for its flippant style of recreating these events. However, that hasn't prevented the performance from receiving acclaim, including Cooper Koch for his role as the insidious schemer, Erik Menendez. He demonstrates expertise over both the horrific and emotional parts of this story, not only showing the devious nature that could lead a person to murder but also exploring the troubled psyche that this character tries so hard to keep contained. Viewers have been loving his performance and anyone who saw him in Swallowed shouldn't be surprised by how fantastic the actor is in this show. Those who saw this body horror feature,...

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered on Netflix on Sept. 19 and instantly rose to the peak of the top 10 most popular shows ranking. The series, which is the second installment in Ryan Murphy's killer anthology series Monster, has earned its criticisms, but there's no doubt it will also achieve acclaim in its inevitable viewership success.
Particularly, the performances of series stars Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch deserve celebration, as they sank their teeth into difficult material and conveyed the heart of these characters. On Sept. 19, Netflix dropped the second season of its Emmy-winning anthology series Monster with the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. 2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.

Hollywood reeled in 2023. There’s no way around that. From striking creatives to the existential crisis of theatrical futures, this year held the entire entertainment industry in its death-like grasp. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough double down on the audience least likely to abandon ship. And anyone who’s actually sat and counted how many annual horror conventions there are knows exactly which audience to bet on.
It’s entirely possible that horror is the most stable and reliable movie genre, but just because its demographic is almost certainly the most voracious doesn’t mean they’re the least discerning. If anything, the list of films that almost made our top 10 would alone be ample ballast for the argument that horror aficionados cast their nets wider than fans of other genres. Take this list as a starting point, and then take it way further than you ever dared.

The UK alt-rockers shared the news alongside a new song that’s included on the comp entitled “Nowhere to Go But Everywhere” — the namesake of the group’s North American tour this fall. The track is a heavy grunger with surging power chords and a standout vocal performance from frontman Gavin Rossdale.
The rest of the collection will cull from Bush’s extensive back catalog, with the tracklist flowing chronologically from the band’s ’90s glory days up through its prolific post-2010 output following the 2011 comeback effort, The Sea of Memories.
“I’m really grateful that I get the chance to make music after all of this time,” Gavin Rossdale commented in a press release. “The privilege is not lost on me. I’m still in the octagon, and I...

Directed by provocative filmmaker Carter Smith, The Passenger stars Johnny Berchtold as Randy, a meek fast-food worker who becomes the unwilling passenger of his co-worker Benson (Kyle Gallner). After Benson commits an unspeakable act at work, he drives around the streets of their small town with Randy by his side. During their journey, Benson attempts to "save" Randy's life by having the young man meet with several people from his past. What ensues is a dark and oddly endearing story of violence, redemption, and friendship.
Smith is responsible for helming the subversive horror films The Ruins, Jamie Marks Is Dead, and Swallowed. With The Passenger, Smith provides a new thriller that makes the audience question the fabric of society. Smith recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Cbr, where he discussed the relationships in his films and The Passenger's surprise happy ending (of sorts).

Not to be confused with the Spanish road trip horror of the same name, The Passenger, the new film from Carter Smith, opens with a woman, blood spurting from her eye socket crawling towards a young boy. It’s a nightmare and Randy is woken from it to start another tedious day at Burgers, Burgers, Burgers. He should have taken it as an omen and stayed home.
As they’re getting the diner ready to open one of the other employees starts harassing him, something that seems to be a regular occurrence. Benson watches in disgust before walking out to have a smoke. Then, as if something just snapped he pulls a shotgun from his car and goes back inside killing everyone except Randy whom he takes hostage.

If you’re a fan of Blumhouse and gripping hostage thrillers, then buckle up for The Passenger. The film, which is directed by Carter Smith and stars Kyle Gallner, Johnny Berchtold (Gaslit), and Liza Weil (The Cleaning Lady), arrives on digital and on demand Aug. 4, and hits MGM+ later this year.
The story showcases Gallner — cinema darling du jour — and Berchtold in captivating performances that also provoke thought. Randy (Berchtold) doesn’t like much drama and is fine lingering on the sidelines. That changes when his brooding coworker Benson (Gallner) suddenly embarks on a violent rampage and leaves wreckage in his path. Pulled into Benson’s emotional black hole, Randy must confront his fears and come to terms with his own troubled past. Or face Benson’s unpredictable wrath.
Written by Jack Stanley (Lou), the psychological thriller delivers a mind-bending experience as its two main characters move through their emotional minefields.

There’s more than one way to be a passenger in life, not all of which involve vehicles. That’s certainly the case when it comes to the protagonist in Carter Smith’s propulsive new thriller, which functions like a therapy session on wheels between a murderous shrink and an unwilling patient. If the two of them don’t exactly paint the town red during their would-be getaway, it’s only because their journey was precipitated by a shocking act of violence in their place of business and they now have to keep a low profile. “The Passenger” does as well, and proves sneakily effective with its low-key approach to several kinds of violence.

"If I'm gonna help you, then I can't have you getting in my way. Because it forces me to hurt you. I need you to work with me, not against me." Paramount and MGM+ have revealed an official trailer for an action thriller horror crossover called The Passenger, the latest from the genre filmmaker Carter Smith. Not to be confused with Jack Nicholson's 1975 film also called The Passenger. This is a Blumhouse production, produced by Jason Blum, that will be dropping on VOD directly in August. A man is forced to face his fears and confront his troubled past. He must find a way to survive when his co-worker snaps and goes on a violent killing spree, taking him along for the ride. This one stars Kyle Gallner, Johnny Berchtold, Liza Weil, with Merah Benoit and Morgana Shaw. An unsettling trailer that gets uncomfortable by the end, but that's the point of this film.

Plot: After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church’s account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege, and a disturbing truth about herself.
Review: Hailing from Scotland, Consecration provides a look at grief and identity. Jena Malone stars as Grace, a woman who’s struggling through life, even more so now that her brother has supposedly killed himself. She journeys to Scotland in order to take care of his affairs. But there’s clearly more to his death than it appears and sends Grace on a journey of discovery. What she finds may be surprising to her, but if you’ve seen any sort of horror movie, will be old hat to you. Because unfortunately, while Consecration looks good, there’s not much more beneath the surface.
I really love Jena Malone and could watch her in just about anything.

Carter Smith’s debut film “The Ruins” was a slight dalliance into the body horror genre that was unnerving but also never went “full Cronenberg” in its approach. The film had great actors, and there was scope and intention, but it ultimately felt a bit hollow. With “Swallowed,” Smith returns to the body horror genre with more intention and a unique approach, but, like “The Ruins,” the film still feels unwilling to embrace its many disparate elements and genres to form a cohesive creature feature.
