Slovenian filmmaker Sonja Prosenc is prepping her fourth feature, an untitled drama about “sisterhood and female liberation” that follows on the heels of her Tribeca premiere “Family Therapy,” a biting social satire-cum-family drama that has its European premiere in competition this week at the Sarajevo Film Festival.

She’s also co-developing the dark comedy-horror series “Little Yugoslavia” with North Macedonian filmmaker Teona Strugar Mitevska, which the duo will be pitching at the Bosnian fest.

Describing her next feature as “a drama with thriller elements,” Prosenc said the film is structured like a puzzle, where the narrative arranges each piece until it gradually constructs the worlds of three women. Set in Slovenia and Italy, it follows their separate lives as they move toward an inevitable convergence, their interconnected stories slowly assembling and culminating in a dramatic collision.

The Locarno Film Festival will fete multi-award-winning Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang with an Honorary Career Leopard award at the upcoming edition running from August 2 to 12.

Regarded as a key figure in the Second New Wave of Taiwanese cinema, Malaysian-born Tsai Ming-liang made his debut in the early 1990s, breaking out internationally with Vive L’Amour, which won Venice’s Golden Lion in 1994.

American narrative feature projects in rough or final cut seeking finishing funds are now invited to submit to the 2022 edition of U.S. in Progress, which takes place Nov. 9-11 during the 13th American Film Festival (Nov.8-13) in Wroclaw, Poland. The strand pairs American projects in final production stages with European buyers and top Polish image and sound post-production companies and provides awards worth totally $100,000. The head of the Polish Film Institute, Radosław Śmigulski, will award one project with a $50,000 cash award to be spent on post-production, image, sound and/or VFX in Poland and Polish post-production companies Fixafilm, Orka Studio, Black Photon, Xanf and Soundflower Studio are each offering a $10,000 in-kind award.

There is no entry fee, and films can be submitted through the U.S. in Progress website. The final deadline is September 11.

BET+ has picked up the U.S. streaming rights to South African-produced sci-fi survival thriller “Pulse.”

“Pulse” tells the explosive story of an electromagnetic pulse that disables a secure building and disrupts the bio-electric signals in everyone’s minds, trapping a group of video game designers and turning each floor into a psychotic battlefield. The show questions whether the modern human race can really survive without the technology that defines our way of life today.

Indian actor Soumitra Chatterjee, best known internationally for his long association with Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray, died on Sunday in Kolkata after contracting coronavirus. He was 85.

Chatterjee was born in Calcutta in 1935. While at university he developed an interest in theater and was subsequently mentored by Sisir Bhaduri, a doyen in the field. He pursued an acting career in cinema while working as an announcer with All India Radio.

Chatterjee’s film debut, “The World of Apu,” (1959) was the third part of Ray’s celebrated Apu Trilogy that began with Cannes-winner “Pather Panchali” in 1955 and continued with Venice-winner “Aparajito” in 1956. The film began a fruitful association with Ray over the years that included “The Goddess” (1960), “Three Daughters” (1961), “The Expedition” (1962), “Charulata” (1964), “Days and Nights in the Forest” (1970), “Distant Thunder” (1973), “The Golden Fortress” (1974), “The Elephant God” (1979), “The Home and the World” (1984) and “Branches of the Tree” (1990).

Fox’s “The Masked Singer” revealed the identity of another Season 2 celebrity contestant during tonight’s episode of the smash-hit singing competition: The Butterfly.

On Wednesday, four out of the seven remaining second-season competitors performed, including The Butterfly, Thingamajig, The Fox and The Tree.

At the end of the episode, panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke and the studio audience, along with returning guest panelist Joel McHale, chose the “weakest” contestant, which ended up being The Butterfly. She was unmasked and revealed to be none other than singer Michelle Williams.
