Saturday Night Live Season 50 Premiere Limps Through Stale Bits And Wastes The Brilliant Jean Smart
Image
"Saturday Night Live" certainly didn't kick off their milestone 50th season with a bang. However, we shouldn't really be surprised. Historically, the season premieres of "SNL" aren't great episodes, mostly because the writers and cast members are a bit rusty after having the entire summer away from the show, and they often have to cycle through some tired material that is already stale by the time it makes it in front of cameras in Studio 8H.

Unfortunately, that means "Hacks" star Jean Smart didn't get their best material, and the result was a middling episode with the sketches ranging from average to embarrassing. It's nothing to worry about, but for anyone who needed to be convinced that "SNL" still has the goods, this episode probably didn't do the trick. But that's also what makes "SNL" one of the most interesting comedy shows to watch. Anything can happen, and sometimes it's great,...

Discovery+ Launches CNN Originals Hub
Image
The CNN Originals hub debuted on Discovery+ on Friday, as the new home for the news channel’s streaming library following the abrupt closure of CNN+.

The hub was announced earlier this month, and features over 800 episodes of content from CNN Original Series, CNN Films, and Hln Original Series. Additional content will be added after their linear run on the CNN cable networks.

Some of the original content that appeared on CNN+ has popped up elsewhere. The documentary The Last Movie Stars, about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, debuted this summer on HBO Max. Chris Wallace’s talk show, one of the marquee offerings, will return in September on CNN on Sunday nights and on HBO Max.

Among the original library titles offered on the new hub are 1968: The Year That Changed America, American Dynasties: The Kennedys, American Style, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1-12), The Bush Years: Family, Duty, Power,...

CNN Originals Hub Launches on Discovery+ with Over 800 TV Episodes
Image
Starting today, Discovery+ subscribers will have access to many of CNN’s most popular evergreen television series, including popular food shows “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and documentaries like “The History of Comedy” and “Diana.” The series can be found under a new CNN Originals hub on Discovery+, the latest addition to the popular documentary-heavy streaming service.

Since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year, CEO David Zaslav has made the consolidation of the conglomerate’s streaming services a top priority. One of his first moves was to scrap CNN+, a streaming service that the company had invested over 100 million into, just a month after it launched. CNN+ primarily focused on content made by CNN personalities that was not strictly news-related. While the service failed to find a significant subscriber base, much of the content produced for it is now...

Image
Fox News topped other cable networks in August, beating its cable news rivals as well other cable networks.

Audiences again were down across the board versus last year. The drop was somewhat expected, given last year’s presidential elections and, in August, the political conventions.

In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 394,000 viewers, down 38%, compared to CNN with 191,000, down 58%, and MSNBC with 163,000, down 55%.

Image
Fox News once again topped its cable news rivals in July viewership, with Tucker Carlson Tonight again topping all shows in total viewers and the 25-54 demographic.

Overall, cable news networks again saw significant tune out during the month compared to the same period in 2020.

In primetime, Fox News topped total viewers with 2.12 million, but that was down 34% from a year earlier. MSNBC averaged 1.31 million, down 37%, while CNN posted 856,000, down 43%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News topped with 330,000, down 36%, followed by CNN with 190,000, down 52%, and MSNBC with 168,000, down 44%.

In total day, Fox News topped with 1.19 million, down 27%, versus MSNBC with 772,000, off by 35%, and CNN with 596,000, down 40%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 201,000, down 27%, followed by CNN with 125,000, dropping by 50% and MSNBC with 103,000, off by 41%.

Networks have pointed out that last year saw big spikes in viewership — due to the presidential election, Covid-19 shutdowns, the Trump presidency — so their declines...

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer in Friends (1994)
Have you seen The One Where Friends Co-Creator Marta Kauffman Explains the Show's Lack of Diversity? More than 25 years since the hit sitcom's debut, the show's co-creator addressed the notable issue with the '90s show while accepting some of the responsibility. "It was, to a certain extent, a product of the time period and of my own ignorance," Kauffman said during a recent episode of CNN's History of the Sitcom, per Entertainment Weekly. "There were Black shows and there were white shows. There weren't a lot of shows that were interracial." As she elaborated, "I guess at the time I was thinking, 'This is what I know. This is what I...
