‘Buffy’ Meets ‘Fleabag’ in Vampire Rom-Com ‘She Kills Them’ Starring Kate Mara
Kate Mara
Kate Mara will star in the vampire romantic comedy She Kills Them, Variety has learned.

She’ll play Chloe Jacobs, a woman in her late 30s living a dangerous double life. By night, she seduces and slays vampires as part of a secret government operation. By day, she’s just another jaded New Yorker trying to figure out her personal life. But when she meets Eric — someone she actually connects with — her two worlds collide.

Dan Clark (“How Not to Live Your Life”) will write and direct with Matthew E. Chausse producing.

“Imagine if ‘Buffy’ grew up to become ‘Fleabag,’” said Clark. “While there’s action and vampires, this is ultimately a grounded, character-driven romantic comedy — think Silver Linings Playbook with the occasional kick-ass fight sequence.”

London-based Tea Shop Films and Paris-based The Project are behind the film.

They said in a joint statement, “We love seeing a romantic comedy...

Raygun Defends Widely Mocked Olympics Breakdancing Set: ‘I Can’t Control How People React’ | Video
Image
Australian breakdancer Raygun was widely mocked and widely criticized for the amateurish breakdancing set she delivered in the first round of competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics. But in an interview this week, she stood by her performance, declaring “I can’t control how people react.”

The comments came while Raygun, whose real name is Rachael Gunn, was speaking to the Australian talk show The Project.

At one point, anchor Waleed Aly quoted local hip hop pioneer Sharline “Spice” Bezzina, who said in August, “I feel like it’s just pushed our scene in Australia into the Dark Ages. It made a mockery of the Australian scene and I think that’s why a lot of us are hurting. In hip-hop we have this thing, you step up or you step off, you need to know your place.”

In response, Gunn said, “It is really sad to hear those criticisms and...

Image
Rachael Gunn, aka Raygun, the Australian Olympic breaker who went viral after her unusual moves were widely mocked in the days after her performance at the Paris Games this summer, says the worldwide ridicule and attention prompted her to seek mental health support and to withdraw from all social media.

And she hasn’t even seen the Jimmy Fallon-Rachel Dratch parody. “I don’t think I’m in the place yet to watch it,” she says in a new interview with the Australian network television show The Project.

“I knew that I was going to get beaten, and I knew that people were not going to understand my style and what I was going to do,” the 37-year-old breaker said. “The odds were against me, that’s for sure.”

“Fortunately I got some mental health support pretty quickly and I also went off social media,” she added.

“He does have a soul piercing gaze”: The Ultimate Rizz Master Austin Butler Makes Female Reporter Nervous With His Undeniable Charm
Image
Why do we bestow upon Hollywood’s finest the name of ‘stars’? Consider this for a moment; it is not mere hyperbole: these big screen icons exude an aura that can carry charismatic waves across an entire room, drawing us into their gravitational pull. And thus, it won’t be wrong to say that Austin Butler, the Golden Globe-touting charmer, incarnates this star-quality phenomenon.

For instance, last month, he mesmerized and gave Sarah Harris, host of The Project, a rosy-cheeked tizzy. He worked his magic with the finesse of a maestro, making laser-focused eye contact and using a voice that seemed to channel Elvis Presley himself—all without revealing too much about his game.

A masterclass in magnetism, Butler’s smoldering charm was not only palpable to the enamored interviewer but also to the legion of fans who found themselves orbiting his star power in the comments.

John Mahoney: A Tearful Kelsey Grammer Says The Frasier Actor's Death Was Like "Losing A Father"
Image
John Mahoney's passing deeply impacted co-stars, particularly Kelsey Grammer, who considered him like a father. The Frasier revival honored Mahoney's character by addressing his absence head-on in a touching tribute episode. The bond between Mahoney and Grammer went beyond their on-screen relationship, reflecting a real familial love.

John Mahoney was famous for his role as Martin Crane on Frasier and his passing was a real loss for his castmates and crew, particularly Kelsey Grammer. Frasier, a spin-off series from the hit sitcom Cheers, was itself a massive cultural touchstone. Over 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004, viewers got to know the uptight Dr. Frasier Crane (Grammer) and his friends and family in Seattle, Washington. His father, Martin (Mahoney), is a retired police detective and an outspoken thorn in his son's side, though the two deeply love one another.

In 2023, the first season of the Frasier revival premiered, introducing new characters and returning some beloved old ones.

Mattel’s Notes for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s ‘Barbie’ Script Included Asking Why an Executive Got Shot
Image
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach got away with a lot of bite-the-hand humor towards Mattel in their script for the blockbuster “Barbie” film. But the company still had a lot of questions about the script for their satirical comedy — including one scene where an exec of the company gets shot.

Gerwig and Baumbach spoke about their process writing the script for the “Barbie” film during a Thursday Q&a with “Angels in America” playwright Tony Kushner at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. At the Q&a, the two spoke about the notes they received during their first submitted draft of the script. One note they received comes in the film’s final act, where the Kens of Barbieland compete in a beach battle. During the chaos, Will Ferrell’s fictional Mattel CEO arrives with his mob of male executives, one of which gets shot with a fake arrow in the fray.

Barbie Foot Challenge Has Podiatrists on Their Toes About Risky TikTok Trend
Image
In the opening of the Barbie trailer, Margot Robbie gets off to the ahem… right foot by stepping out of her heels with feet still arched in a now iconic scene. Naturally, TikTok has turned it into a viral challenge that has some podiatrists concerned about its dangers.

Folks participating in this particular trend have been attempting to recreate the scene by posing up on their toes and taking a few carefully balanced steps forward, with TV personality Chrissy Teigen even getting in on the fun (albeit on Instagram). Watch a few clips below.

‘Barbie’ Director Greta Gerwig Explains Why She Chose Not To Use CGI On Margot Robbie’s Feet

“Barbie” director Greta Gerwig has a good reason why she chose not to use CGI on Margot Robbie’s feet.

9 Wildest Barbie Movie Marketing Stunts (& There's Still 2 Weeks To Go)
Image
The Barbie movie has seen one of the most prolific, memorable marketing campaigns in recent memory. The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, stars Margot Robbie as the titular, multi-talented Barbie, whose perfect life in Barbieland is turned upside down when an inner crisis forces her to depart for the real world. Ever since the announcement of Gerwig’s attachment to the project, anticipation for Barbie has been steadily growing. The film’s impressive cast, stylized aesthetic, and unique tone has captured the attention of audiences, as has the massive marketing campaign.

While a Barbie movie was originally given the development green light from Barbie toy manufacturer Mattel in 2009, the project was stuck in development hell for several years as it saw changes in writers, directors, cast, and even studios. It’s no surprise that co-producers, Mattel, Warner Bros. and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment are pulling out all the stops...

Why the Barbie Movie Didn't Use CGI for the High Heel Scene
Image
Barbie co-writer/director Greta Gerwig recently explained why the upcoming fantasy-comedy film didn't use CGI for its already-iconic high-heel scene.

Gerwig unpacked the decision to realize Barbie's (Margot Robbie) signature arched feet without visual effects during an appearance on the Australian current affairs program The Project. Greta Gerwig Refused to Use CGI on ‘Barbie’ Cast’s Feet: ‘That’s a Nightmare’
Image
In the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated “Barbie” film adaptation, one of the biggest plot points is the central Barbie doll (played by Margot Robbie) suddenly losing her trademark arched feet, to the horror of the other Barbies in Barbie Land. But that moment almost became horrifying for completely different reasons, as the executives in charge of the film nearly considered using CGI on the actors’ feet — before Gerwig quickly squashed the idea.

Gerwig spoke about making the film during an interview on the Australian talk show “The Project” (via Variety). During the interview, she spoke about how she made the arched foot scene that opens the trailer happen, revealing that she shut down discussions of using CGI on Robbie or the rest of the actors playing Barbie early on.

During a recent interview with Australia’s Channel 10 talk show The Project, Australia-born Margot Robbie had a brief home-country memory slip while promoting Warner Bros’ upcoming Barbie in which she plays the titular character.

When The Project co-host Sam Taunton mentioned that the word “barbie” doesn’t always refer to the iconic doll in Oz, Robbie asked, “What does it mean here?” Shocked, others in the studio exclaimed, “A barbecue!”

The audio, reported last week but recorded back in 2021, featured Wilkinson apparently mocking the Coalition party and struggling to pronounce “Nampijinpa.”

And Wilkinson can be heard saying the Liberal party preselected “over 20 new and wonderfully diverse and strong female candidates like, and what’s her name, Nam… Nampinjumba? (sic). She’s an Indigenous woman.”

Another voice on the audio, David Sharaz was heard replying: “She clearly got in. Clearly it was a safe seat.”

And producer Angus Llewellyn was heard adding: “See, we know brown people.”

Price spoke out on Friday, telling Australian radio 2Gb the comments were “racist” and “derogatory.”

“I would absolutely expect an apology from the Ten Network,...

Where is Film Production in Central America and the Caribbean Heading? Panama Film Match Has Some Answers
Image
Iff Panama’s co-production forum, the Panama Film Match, launched in 2020 in a virtual format. It’s now holding its first in-person format between Dec. 2-4 as part of the 10th Panama Intl. Film Festival (Iff Panama).

Creating a co-production forum has been a long-standing goal for Iff Panama, the highest-profile film event in Central America. The Pfm is a sister event to Iff Panama’s pix-in-post sidebar, Primera Mirada, which are already showing synergies.

One of the projects that received a special mention in last year’s edition of the Pfm, Ariel Escalante’s Costa Rican supernatural drama “Domingo and the Fog” is returning this year as one of the five films competing in Primera Mirada.

The forum is supported by the Idb Lab, the innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group.

“Panama Film Match seeks to be a meeting place for artistic, economic and creative cooperation between...

‘Australasia has definitely been a pioneer’: New report examines rise of brand-funded programming
Image
The pandemic’s impact on both broadcasters and the way in which advertising is consumed may usher in a new era of brand-funded content, a new report has found.

In Brand Funded Programming: Why it Matters Now, global media intelligence consultancy K7 Media outlines how Covid-19 has accelerated a change in attitudes among broadcasters, many of whom now view brand-funded content as a necessity.

According to the research, which features interviews with 26 top industry experts from around the world, many brands have been forced to slash their marketing budgets as a result of the pandemic – with brand-funded programming stepping in to fill the void.

K7 identifies the Australian and New Zealand markets as having been among the quickest to adopt the practice, due in part to a lack of restrictions such as those seen in UK, where Section Nine of the Office of Communications Broadcasting Code states that broadcasters must...

‘Red Sonja: The Superpowers #1’ Review
Image
Written by Dan Abnett | Art by Jonathan Lau | Published by Dynamite Entertainment

So in a month packed full of Future State titles from DC, and the King in Black stuff from Marvel, I’ve decided to go elsewhere for the first of my weekly reviews. Why? Well, as much as I do love Marvel and DC, I do also know a bit about the business, and the endless special events are as much about market share as fan service. By putting out such a glut of titles, they hope you won’t go elsewhere for your comics fix, a bit like Disney getting you on property when you visit the theme parks. So, scouting around, I thought this book looked interesting. I loved the Project Superpowers stuff that Dynamite has put out in the past, and who doesn’t love a warrior redhead in a chainmail bikini sticking it to the man?...

Premiering in Competition at Sitges, ‘A Perfect Enemy’ Gets International Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
This week, Barcelona-based filmmaker Kike Maíllo’s “A Perfect Enemy” will world premiere at Catalonia’s Sitges Film Festival, playing in the event’s Official Fantastic Competition. Ahead of its Oct. 16 premiere, sales agent Pulsar Content has given Variety access to the film’s international trailer.

An adaptation of Amélie Nothomb’s bestselling novel “Cosmétique de l’Ennemi,” the film is the story of internationally renowned architect Jeremiasz Angust. While waiting in the Paris International Airport, he’s approached by a talkative young woman named Texel Textor who’s colorful and energetic look and demeanor are a complete mismatch with Angust’s own uptight garb and composure.

After Texel causes him to miss his flight, Angust is unable to shake the girl and what started as an amusing chat quickly becomes something far more malicious.

For the cast, Maíllo recruited Oscar-level talent in “Cold War” star Tomasz Kot and Spanish actress Marta Nieto,...

Lindsay Ell on How She Processed Grief and Trauma on New Album ‘Heart Theory’
Image
Two years ago, Lindsay Ell released The Continuum Project, a song-for-song remake of John Mayer’s 2006 album The Continuum. It was an ambitious release that initially sprouted out of a studio and songwriting exercise before widening in scope, but it pales in comparison to the lofty concept underpinning the Canadian singer-songwriter-guitarist’s new release, Heart Theory. The 12-track album, on which Ell co-wrote 11 of the songs, was produced by Dann Huff and goes headlong into self-care as it tracks the seven stages of grief — a psychological framework first developed by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.

Watch Chris Hemsworth Cringe as Huge Thor: Ragnarok Spoiler Is Revealed
Jeff Goldblum, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
It's spoiler time, so you better stop reading if you want to go into Thor: Ragnarok clean and fresh. The movie is just a few weeks away from release. But quite a few critics and journalists have already screened the sequel for interview purposes. Though, one intrepid reporter couldn't help himself in blurting out a major Thor 3 spoiler on air. Which star Chris Hemsworth found incredibly irksome. You can see the cringe-worthy exchange in the video below.

Marvel actors are trained in not revealing spoilers of any kind, a class which Mark Ruffalo must have slept through, as evidenced by some of his behavior recently. But that won't ever stop an interviewer from saying something he shouldn't. That's fine when it's in print and Marvel can embargo the interview. But not when it's live on air, as is the case with the latest Thor: Ragnarok interview.

A new Australian...

The show was recently picked up for a 10 episode second season. Velazquez's other credits include Sophia on Fxx's The League, Catalina on NBC's My Name is Earl and Emma Rios on TNT's Major Crimes.

She's also starred in films opposite Denzel Washington (Flight) and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Snitch).

We had an opportunity to speak with Nadine about her role as Jackie, women's issues and her upcoming charity project, the Total Beauty Project.

If you haven't yet seen the show (what are you waiting for?!), you'll know that Jackie, like the rest of the Seal wives, is a strong, family-oriented woman who doesn't tolerate much of anything from her husband, Buddha.

It's one of the things that attracted Velazquez to the role.

Surprise, Surprise: Justin Timberlake Regrets That Double-Denim Moment With Britney Spears
We all remember when then-couple Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears showed up to the American Music Awards in 2001 wearing head-to-toe denim, and it sounds like Justin hasn't stopped thinking about it, either. While promoting Trolls in Australia this week, Justin stopped by the talk show The Project and was asked, "What have you learned about the industry that you didn't know when you were in *Nsync that you know now?" After a beat, he replied, "If you wear denim on denim, it will get documented. You know what, I don't think I could even bring that back." About the look (which he and Britney wore 15 years ago but somehow seems like just yesterday), Justin added, "I'm going to go out on a limb and say if it's worn properly, denim on denim could be [brought back]." When asked who he thinks could pull the look off now, he quipped, "Not Donald Trump.

Batman & Robin: 25 things we learned from its making-of book
facebook

twitter

google+

Gorilla suits in Batman & Robin were made from old Santa wigs. And that cape swoosh? It was some old tarp...

It’s less of a thing now, but in the 1980s and 1990s, major blockbusters were sometimes accompanied by a making-of book. Sure, these tended to be quite glossy and promotional, but they also had to fill 100-200 pages with something. And in the case of Batman & Robin, one of 1997’s two notorious blockbuster flops (Speed 2 being the other), Michael Singer penned a 128 page guide to what was supposed to be the biggest film of the year.

It’s interesting, too, digging in far more detail than you might expect into the technical details. Here are 25 of the things that we found out from reading it…

1. Bob Kane was involved with the script

Batman co-creator Bob Kane is one of the many interviewees for the book, and...
