For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.
What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.
Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

The Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes, the latest film from Werewolves Within and Scare Me director Josh Ruben is now in theatres (you can read our 7/10 review Here and watch our interviews with cast members at This Link), and during an interview with our friends at Bloody Disgusting, Ruben revealed that he used writer/director Tom McLoughlin’s 1986 classic Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI as his guide when figuring out how to balance horror and comedy in his own slasher movie.
Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies.

Slasher movies seem to be having a revival these days, provided they have a neat little hook that adds some flare to the subgenre. This new wave of slashers aren't just slasher movies — they're slasher movies with a twist. Enter "Heart Eyes," a new flick that asks, "What if a slasher movie was also a rom-com?" To add some fuel to the fire, "Heart Eyes" also fits into the "holiday horror" sub-genre — while Christmas seems to reign supreme here, there are plenty of other holidays on the calendar to turn into days of mass murder. "Heart Eyes" uses Valentine's Day as its backdrop, joining the likes of the two "My Bloody Valentine" films and the somewhat forgotten 2001 slasher "Valentine."
As a plus, "Heart Eyes" has some talented people at the helm: it hails from indie horror filmmaker Josh Ruben, who directed wonderful little fright flicks like "Scare Me" and "Werewolves Within,...

According to the official synopsis, the story follows “Two co-workers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) who are mistaken for a couple by a murderer in Seattle on Valentine's Day.

On Halloween, Sony Pictures unveiled a red band teaser trailer for the Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes – and last week, the film’s director, Josh Ruben (who previously brought us Werewolves Within and Scare Me), took to social media to let it be known that the full trailer would be dropping online this week. Sure enough, the full trailer for Heart Eyes has now been unveiled, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Heart Eyes is set to reach theatres on February 7, 2025. February 14th is a Friday, so that would seem to be the perfect choice for this movie’s release date, but it was already taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, so Sony had to move it to the week before Valentine’s Day. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie Love Hurts, starring Ke Huy Quan.

A 2024 Netflix film has rapidly become a global success, despite receiving a 30% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Though the streaming service has produced a number of movies that have received awards attention, Netflix just as frequently releases original films that miss with critics. However, the platform's set-up makes it easy for movies to reach audiences in search of a casual watch, turning critically-disliked titles into global hits.
Netflix's model has proven viewers are willing to engage with content regardless of critical opinion, suggesting that audience appeal plays a larger role in streaming platforms' success than that of critics. In recent weeks, Netflix originals that earned poor reviews on their way to becoming viewership hits include the Lindsay Lohan Christmas romance Our Little Secret, fellow holiday offering The Merry Gentlemen, and the slasher flick Time Cut.

Netflix continues its domination during the week’s streaming wars, and there’s good reason why. With its recent offerings, the platform is serving up a variety of options that cater to viewers of different age groups. On the animated movies side, Netflix goes big with Despicable Me 4 and The Secret Life of Pets - some huge favorites amongst young children. Meanwhile, thrillers Don’t Move and Time Cut reign supreme, proving that it’s never too late for some post-Halloween scares.

After a week off the charts, Netflix’s Outer Banks returned to the streaming rankings — shooting to No. 1 overall with the release of its latest batch of episodes.
The YA drama brought in 1.23 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 4-10, according to Nielsen; the second half of season four premiered on Nov. 7. That’s the highest weekly tally for Outer Banks since the season premiered in October, although still well below its biggest performances in season three.
The Diplomat (1.22 billion minutes) finished a close second, growing a little bit from its premiere week and remaining in second place overall. The Lincoln Lawyer gave up its No. 1 ranking but stayed above the billion-minute mark with 1.11 billion minutes of watch time.

After wrapping October with Robert Zemeckis’ hilarious dark comedy Death Becomes Her (listen), we kicked off November with a look back at Wes Craven’s classic slasher A Nightmare on Elm Street (listen), followed by Albert Ray’s pre-Code 1932 “classic” The Thirteenth Guest (listen).
In honor of Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass re-teaming for Shudder’s The Creep Tapes (review), we’ve decided to revisit the better-than-the-original sequel Creep 2.
In the film, after dispatching new “friend” Dave (Karan Soni), Aaron (Duplass) sets his sights on flailing YouTube personality Sara (Desiree Akhavan). After trying all of the same tricks as the first film, however, Aaron finds that Sara is unflappable: she’s not bothered by his pranks and jump scares and seems more than willing to match his freak in every conceivable way
As the battle of wills escalates, it soon becomes clear that these two may just be made for each other.

Netflix's new Christmas movie with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score becomes the streaming service's No. 1 movie as the holiday season begins. Netflix has been producing original Christmas movies since 2017, starting with A Christmas Prince. Since then, the streaming service has solidified its reputation as a go-to platform for holiday films with titles like The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens, The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell, and Klaus, an Oscar-nominated animated movie, exemplifying the diversity of Netflix's Christmas movie catalog.
In 2024, Netflix already had the holiday romantic comedy, Meet Me Next Christmas, top its Global Top 10 chart for the week of November 410 with over 18 million views. The holiday season is just beginning, so there should be plenty more Christmas movies appearing on Netflix's global chart before the year's end. This includes Netflix's new romantic comedy Christmas movie starring Lacey Chabert, a frequent star of Hallmark's Christmas movies, which has become the streaming service's new No.

Margot Robbie and Will Smith's crime movie, which made over $158 million at the box office, becomes a global Netflix hit nine years later. Two of the biggest stars of their time, Smith rose to fame playing a fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and transitioned to blockbuster movies during the 1990s, starring in Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, and more. He started garnering critical acclaim during the 2000s, earning Oscar nominations for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, though he didn't win the award until King Richard in 2022.
Similarly, Robbie started her career on television with Neighbours and Pan Am, but broke through with a standout role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and collaborated with more acclaimed directors on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Chris Pine's directorial debut, which he also stars in, has become a streaming success despite its dismal 22% Rotten Tomatoes score. Pine is perhaps best known for his franchise roles, starting with Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot movies, which include 2009's Star Trek, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016's Star Trek Beyond. From there, he also starred as Steve Trevor in the Dceu movies, 2017's Wonder Woman and its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.
Outside of franchise fare, Pine first rose to prominence for his roles in romantic comedies, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004 and Just My Luck in 2006. From there, he was cast in Star Trek, but continued to appear in other possible franchise-starters, playing Cinderella's Prince in Disney's Into the Woods and Jack Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Now, we’re traveling all the way back to the ’30s to discuss Albert Ray‘s 1932 murder mystery comedy The Thirteenth Guest!
In The Thirteenth Guest, Marie Morgan (Ginger Rogers) has just turned 21 and can now accept the inheritance that her father left her when he died at a dinner party 13 years prior. That dinner party was supposed to have 13 guests in attendance, but only 12 showed up.
While Marie tries to figure out the identity of the mysteriously absent thirteenth guest, a psychopath has started killing off the other attendees of that fated dinner party, with the dead bodies being left at the table in the same seats they had originally occupied all those years ago.

A 24-year-old Ridley Scott movie has become a modern streaming hit. At the age of 86, Scott continues to work regularly in Hollywood as a director and producer. He is responsible for some truly iconic films over the course of his 60-year career spanning a variety of genres. He's worked extensively in science-fiction with Blade Runner and multiple installments in the Alien franchise, but he has also returned time and time again to the historical epic, which he is set to return to once more with the upcoming Gladiator II.
Last year, Scott released the divisive Napoleon, about the titular French emperor, a sprawling film with a number of standout battle sequences. On television, Plaza has also showcased her range as a strait-laced lawyer in The White Lotus season 2, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and starred in the Marvel miniseries Agatha All Along.
In film, Plaza started with a supporting role in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and graduated on to leading roles in independent films, such as the Sundance hit Safety Not Guaranteed. In addition to starring, she started producing with The Little Hours and Ingrid Goes West, both black comedies, and also expanded her range to thrillers, starring in Black Bear and Emily the Criminal, all of which screened at Sundance.

A Zachary Levi movie that flopped at the box office has now become a global hit on Netflix. Overall, 2024 has been up and down in terms of box office performance. The year kicked off with the February release that would become one of the biggest blockbuster flops of the year: Argylle. Argylle was not only panned by critics, but it lost millions of dollars as it grossed $96.2 million on an estimated $200 million budget. This was not a great start to the year, leaving a lukewarm box office in an early 2024 weekend.
Since then, the box office has picked up quite a bit in 2024. Family movies have been a big part of this year's box office wins, with the critically-acclaimed Inside Out 2 taking the no. 1 spot at the box office overall. Other family-friend hits in the global box office top 10 this year include Despicable Me 4, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

After falling off the chart for two weeks, “Outer Banks” Season 4 is once again the top title on Luminate’s weekly streaming rankings. Thanks to the release of its second batch of episodes on Nov. 7, the Netflix teen drama was watched for 1.4 billion minutes watched during the Nov. 8-14 viewing window.
“Outer Banks” nearly doubled the viewership of the next-most-watched title, which was “Tulsa King” Season 2 with 810.5 million minutes watched. It was a strong week for Taylor Sheridan-created series; besides “Tulsa King,” both season of “Lioness” also made the chart. Prime Video's new apocalyptic zombie movie has become a streaming success. Amazon's streaming service has been consistently producing original movies since 2019, although they take on a variety of genres, they started making horror movies about a year in, including Black Box, The Lie, Nocturne, and Evil Eye. Since then, that roster has expanded significantly to include more movies, such as Bingo Hell, Black as Night, Madres, The Manor, Master, Goodnight Mommy, Nanny, and perhaps Prime Video's most popular horror movie, Totally Killer.
On the series side, one of Prime Video's most popular efforts is the post-apocalyptic drama Fallout, based on the Bethesda video game series of the same name, which has been renewed for a second season. Though some of its content could be categorized as post-apocalyptic, Prime Video has never directly dabbled in the zombie before. However, its first feature-length installment in the genre has recently seen an unexpected...

For the second time in two weeks, a previous #1 VOD release, still at premium price, returned to #1 after a week in a lower position.
“The Wild Robot” (Universal), still #4 in theaters this weekend parallel to home availability, repeats the move “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros. Discovery) managed last week.
The rise comes for two reasons. First, a lack of competitive new releases, including disinterest in “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Wbd). Second is likely its rental price reduction from an initial premium at $24.99 to the more standard $19.99 PVOD cost.
After over three weeks where five different original movies took the top daily spot, Will Smith, whose “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” was his last studio #1, returned with his 2015 mid-level success “Focus.” But for most of the week, “Meet Me Next Christmas” led their list.
Fandango (which ranks by revenue) and iTunes (by transactions) both also list the “Beetlejuice” sequel and “Deadpool & Wolverine...

Bryan Cranston's little-known 2016 crime thriller The Infiltrator, with a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating of 72%, has entered the Netflix charts. Cranston rose to public prominence in the role of Walter White in AMC's crime drama Breaking Bad from 2008-2013. The Infiltrator, which Cranston also executive-produced, follows a U.S. Customs special agent who goes undercover in the 1980s to try to bust Pablo Escobar's money-laundering organization. Despite positive reviews, the movie was a box office flop, grossing just $22 million against a budget of $47 million, but has found fresh popularity on streaming.
Despite being poorly received by audiences during its theatrical run, The Infiltrator seems to have found a new lease on life as it has entered the Netflix Top 10 Movies in the U.S. chart as of November 8. Time Cut and Totally Killer obviously share several important elements in common, but Time Cut was not a copy for several reasons. In 2023, Amazon Prime released their critically acclaimed time travel slasher film, Totally Killer. The film starred Kiernan Shipka as a young woman who is accidentally transported back in time, and is presented with an opportunity to stop the infamous serial killer who caused havoc in her small town.
Over the course of the movie, she finds and connects with her mother and a group of friends who were set to be murdered in 1987, who she tries to warn about the imminent dangers. After three people are killed in a single heinous attack, others begin to believe her and she is able to work together with her peers from the past in order to take down the most notorious monster from their community.

For many people, it won't seem possible that the year 2000 is 24 years ago, and even new time travel horror movies like Time Cut are taking audiences back to the early part of the new millennium. However, turn on your favorite radio station, and you'll be guaranteed to hear one of the most popular tunes from the 2000s. Also, walk down the street, and you'll likely see people strutting about in clothes that were first fashionable 20 years ago. The same, sadly, cannot be said about certain movies from the 2000s that barely anyone remembers or that may be better off being forgotten about.
If you can pinpoint one thing that has changed since the start of the 21st century, it's that some of these movies, no matter how popular they were at the time, have not aged well. Perhaps it's a comedy such as Bridget Jones's Diary with some gags that...

The weather is getting colder, nights are getting longer, fog is hanging in the air, and people are looking over their shoulders at dawn. Before we eat our way through cookies into the festive Christmas season that once a year invites us with a warm hug, first its time to indulge in the high-pitched screaming, knife-chasing final girl and slasher season. Then again, doesnt a good old slasher movie not always work?

Since Netflix's Time Cut seems to borrow many sci-fi and horror tropes and themes from other renowned films, viewers who enjoyed watching it should have many other movies on their watch lists. Unfolding through several different timelines, Time Cut is among the many flicks that use time travel as a narrative device to walk viewers through the complexities of fate, grief, and the consequences of changing the past. However, despite being driven by a complex sci-fi concept, Time Cut does not take itself too seriously and focuses less on getting time travel "right."
Apart from featuring characters who travel through time, Netflix's Time Cut also presents a slasher element, allowing it to blend its sci-fi with horror. Although Time Cut is not as violent as one would expect a slasher horror flick to be, it features a fair share of brutal killing scenes that add some intense thrills to its otherwise familiar narrative.

Although Time Cut is filled with plot holes and time travel inaccuracies, it does include a strange scene that could tease a fascinating plot twist. Netflix's Time Cut cast carries the story through two time periods, although most of the plot unfolds in 2003. The main storyline revolves around a serial killer known only as the Sweetly Slasher, and the efforts of Madison Bailey's Lucy Field and her two accomplices to stop Time Cut's villain. However, the defeat of the Slasher may not completely dispel the threat.
The identity of Time Cut's Sweetly Slasher is eventually revealed to be Griffin Gluck's Quinn, but a version of him from twenty years in the future who has become increasingly bitter at being romantically rejected by Antonia Gentry's Summer Field - Lucy's sister. Although Time Cut's...

Netflix's latest horror thriller Time Cut is an energetic whodunnit movie leaping between modern-day gloom and early 2000s nostalgia. Fusing the fun of classic slashers like Scream with the time-traveling tropes of Back to the Future and its continued reimaginings, Director Hannah Macpherson, best known for mystery series T@gged and School Spirits, offers a new take on dealing with the past, its grief, and the consequences of forging a new future.
Time Cut stars Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) as Lucy, a teenage, aspiring astronomer forced to grow up in the shadow of her sister Summer (Atonia Gentry) following her murder in 2003. After stumbling upon a time machine, Lucy is sent into the past, right before the masked killer who took the life of Summer and her friends begins his rampage. Warning! This article contains spoilers for Netflix's Time Cut.
Netflixs time-travel slasher, Time Cut, can get confusing pretty quickly, especially considering some of its character deaths happen not once, but twice. Set in the fictional town of Sweetly, the movie centers around the Sweetly Slasher, who killed four teenagers back in 2003, including the sweet and popular Summer (Antonia Gentry). Lucy (Madison Bailey) a teen from 2024 and Summers younger sister sets out to stop them before they happen. Time Cut's main character quickly encounters a series of paradoxes that overcome her knowledge and threaten the limits of her existence.
While the ending of Time Cut offers some clarity as to what happened and when, many things that are initially established as canon end up changing or never occurring. School Spirits director, Hannah Macpherson, crafts a gripping and tension-packed murder puzzle whose fragmented and shifting nature ensures no set course of events.

Netflix's latest film, Time Cut, had the potential to be great, given the time travel and horror elements the creators decided to incorporate. However, much to the audience's disappointment, the film didn't live up to that intriguing expectation. The concept of time travel has always garnered attention as it makes the audience question what they would do if they were in a similar situation as the protagonists of the films tackling this subject. Netflix's top Halloween pick film follows the story of two sisters, Summer (Antonia Gentry) and Lucy Fields (Madison Bailey), who become the center of a supernatural thriller involving time travel and a masked killer.
The film begins in 2003 after three of Summer's best friends have been murdered at a high school party.

For seven consecutive weeks, Max/HBO’s “The Penguin” has ruled the streaming chart, much in the way its titular character hopes to reign over the crime underworld of Gotham City. No one and nothing, ranging from diplomats to lawyers, from Halloween horrors to Martha Stewart, could unseat the show this week on Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report.
With one more episode to go, it’s highly likely “The Penguin” will make it a clean eight-week sweep atop the chart – and possibly extend its tenure beyond new episodes, as we saw with “House of the Dragon” over the summer.
Let’s look at the challengers who may hope to hold the crown once “The Penguin’s” season ends.
In second this week is “Don’t Move,” the Netflix horror film that likely got a Halloween-time bump in ratings. At No. 3 is another gangster story, albeit one a bit lighter in tone,...

Too all of the slasher film nerds who enjoy Scream or You're Next, Netflix's October 30 release Time Cut, directed by Hannah MacPherson, adds in the sci-fi element of time travel to the formula. The main cast features Madison Bailey, who plays Lucy; Antonia Gentry, who plays Summer; and Griffin Gluck, who plays Quinn. The film centers around Lucy, who stumbles upon a time machine and ends up back in April 16, 2003, a few days before her sister and a few of her friends are killed by a masked serial killer.

Netflix's new slasher Time Cut follows its main character Lucy Field (Madison Bailey) as she accidentally travels back in time 21 years to the first night of a serial killer's killing spree. Lucy's own sister Summer (Antonia Gentry) was one of the killer's victims, so she was never able to meet her in her original timeline. However, Lucy uses her time in 2003 to befriend her sister and do everything possible to save Summer's life.
While Time Cut is a very entertaining watch for audiences, the movie does leave some questions unanswered regarding what Lucy leaves behind in her original timeline. Throughout the movie, Lucy and Summer's friend Quinn tries to warn them about the dangers of time traveling, as there is no sure way to know how you might change the future when altering the past. For better or worse, Lucy's story at the...

Back to the Future has often been criticized for one massive plot hole, and it looks like Netflix's new time travel horror movie has made the narrative inconsistency even worse. Although touted as one of the best time travel movies, Back to the Future is not bereft of the mistakes and time travel paradoxes that often weigh down movies that walk through multiple timelines. Although Harold and the Purple Crayon had a less than favorable run at the box office, it found success on Netflix, reaching no. 8 in the U.S. for the week between Oct. 28 and Nov. 3. The fantasy comedy starring Levi adapted Crockett Johnson's 1995 children's book of the same name, and it combined live-action and animation. Even the deal with Netflix was problematic, but the children's film drew enough interest to make it into the top 10.

Netflix’s latest sci-fi horror hit, Time Cut, tells the story of Lucy (played by Outer Banks star Madison Bailey), a high school student and hobby inventor who accidentally travels back to 2003. She tries to save her older sister Summer (played by Ginny & Georgia‘s Antonia Gentry) from being killed by a masked serial killer.
According to Netflix, the movie racked up over 22 million views last week after its October 30 release. It’s now in the streamer’s top 10 list, beating out the new Sam Raimi-produced horror film Don’t Move and the Marvel sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
On Rotten Tomatoes, though, the movie isn’t doing as well, with a critics’ score of just 26%. Decider’s review says “Time Cut consists of piles of period-specific references sans humor, heavy drama without depth, and characters without much going on in their interior lives.”

Netflix continues to be a place where initially poorly-received movies go to thrive. A number of 2024 releases, including the critically panned horror pic "Tarot" and the family film (and box office bust) "Harold and the Purple Crayon," have quickly climbed the streaming charts after hitting the streamer this year. Now, an already-forgotten 2016 biopic is getting the Netflix treatment.
The movie in question is called "The Infiltrator," and it just dropped on the streamer on November 1, 2024. It's worth noting that the film is also available on tons of other free and paid subscription services right now, including Paramount+, The Roku Channel, Hoopla, and Plex. But Netflix is still a massive, culturally dominant streamer, and its viewership data is now easily available thanks to sites like FlixPatrol. According to the data site, the movie was the sixth most-watched feature film title on Netflix as of November 5, 2024, ranking higher than recent Netflix Original...

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Netflix's Time Cut.
A new Netflix time travel movie reminds viewers of the biggest tragedy from Marty McFly's story's original ending in Back to the Future. Towards Back to the Future's conclusive moments, all seemingly ends well for Marty when he not only fixes the foundation of his parents' relationship but also ends up saving Doc. Before the movie's credits start rolling, Marty discovers that his father is successful, accomplished, and admired by his mother. Even his mother seems happy, while his siblings are all still around.
Although the movie introduces a twist when Doc spawns and insists they must travel to the future to save their children, everything seems to favor Marty in Back to the Future's ending. Altering the past could have sent many disastrous ripples into the future, but Marty seems to escape unscathed, with his life...

Spoilers ahead for Time Cut!
This article mentions attempted suicide and also includes spoilers for Netflix's Time Cut movie.
Netflix's Time Cut features some interesting takes on its biggest sci-fi trope, but the movie also introduces a huge concept as part of the film's lore and then never revisits it - despite the fact it should have come into play many times. Although Time Cut is filled with hidden references and Easter Eggs, the story's time travel logic is, at best, a little shaky. At worst, the movie's canon is a thrown-together mess, and one aspect of Time Cut's worldbuilding demonstrates that perfectly.
Netflix's new temporal adventure falls very short of making the list of best time travel movies of all time, but despite Time Cut's time travel rules being riddled with issues, it's still a relatively fun ride. Hardcore sci-fi fans will likely find Time Cut's plot holes distracting,...
