Dr. Seuss’s ‘Cat in the Hat’ Gets Animated With Bill Hader in First Trailer
Image
Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat” came back.

The popular children’s book, originally published in 1957, is getting a new animated adaptation from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation early next year, with Bill Hader providing the voice for the impish feline. And you can watch the new trailer below.

“The Cat in the Hat” looks visually stunning, with the eye-popping animation provided by the talented team at Dneg Animation. The movie was directed by Alessandro Carloni (a veteran of all three “Kung Fu Panda” movies among many others) and co-directed by Erica Rivinoja, with the pair also co-writing the new adaptation.

Beyond Hader, the voice cast includes America Ferrara, Xochitl Gomez, Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang, Matt Berry, Paula Pell, Tituss Burgess and Giancarlo Esposito.

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, now under the leadership of Bill Damaschke, has another Seuss adaptation in the works, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!,” directed by...

'Harry Potter' Star's, 66, Latest British Drama Earns a Shockingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
After receiving a well-deserved Academy Award nomination for her work on the #MeToo thriller She Said, Rebecca Lenkiewicz has moved to the directing chair for her feature debut, Hot Milk. After premiering back in February at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, the movie has finally made its way to US shores, releasing on June 27 to an excited audience. However, it seems that, despite the excitement, the film has failed to make its mark on critics, which is unlikely to help its chances of box office success.

Officially, Hot Milk has been awarded a dreadful 27% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, albeit from just 30 reviews so far. This makes the movie one of the worst-received theatrical releases of the year to date, and is a surprising turn of events given the sheer star power on display. Not only boasting the talent of Lenkiewicz behind the camera,...

Two members of the Malfoy family have also been cast, with Lox Pratt succeeding Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, while Johnny Flynn will portray his father, Lucius Malfoy. Pratt's casting comes less than a week after it was announced that Felton would be reprising his role as Draco for a 19-week stint in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Inside the Unlikely Return of the Animated Short Film | Analysis
Image
When Netflix released its “engagement report,” a chart that details the streaming giant’s top performing content from July to December 2024, on the film list, just past word-of-mouth sensations like “Carry-On” and “Rebel Ridge” and a couple of spots below heavily hyped sequel “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the sixth most-watched thing on Netflix was “Sing: Thriller,” a short film set in Illumination’s “Sing” universe that features Michael Jackson’s beloved smash. This 10-minute “Sing” short performed better than animated features like DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together” and Netflix’s own original animated movies “That Christmas” and “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” a “SpongeBob SquarePants” project licensed from Paramount. “Sing: Thriller” racked up a staggering 77,000,000 views.

The short, which features an odd ooze turning the animal denizens of the “Sing” universe into zombie-like creatures, captures the colorful, brightly choreographed charm of the “Sing” movies and distills that charm into an easily digestible,...

Ed Sheeran Teases New Single “Azizam,” First New Album Since 2023
Image
Ed Sheeran is back. Nearly two years removed from his seventh album, Autumn Variations, the English singer teased a snippet of an upcoming single called “Azizam,” the lead single off his upcoming eighth album.

“Album done. Single soon,” Sheeran wrote in a post on his Instagram, dancing to the song while standing beside producer Ilya Salmanzadeh. Sheeran didn’t provide a release date on the single or the album. “I’m very excited as you can tell.”

A post shared by Ed Sheeran (@teddysphotos)

“Azizam” has a faster-paced dance beat, with some Persian influence as evidenced from the track’s title. Azizam itself is a Persian term of endearment that means “my dear.”

Sheeran hasn’t released an album since 2023. Four months before dropping Autumn Variations, which hit No. 4 on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart, Sheeran also released – (Subtract), the final album in Sheeran’s mathematically themed records,...

Harry Potter Continues To Cast Spell Over Global Audiences As First Movie Enters British Streaming Exports List 2024
Image
Exclusive: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone continues to cast a spell over fans around the world, according to Digital-i’s British streaming exports list 2024.

The first Harry Potter movie was one of only two projects launched before 2024 that made the inaugural list, which is measured via viewing outside the UK to Netflix, Disney, Prime Video and Max in the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia and key territories across Lat Am and Europe. Given that The Philosopher’s Stone premiered nearly 25 years ago, this is quite the feat. The only other project on the list launched prior to 2024 was Saltburn, which moved to Prime Video in late 2023 after a theatrical run.

The Harry Potter movie was watched more than 40 million times on Max last year and reached nearly 20% of the Wbd streamer’s subs in the measured territories, placing it eighth on the list, according to the analysis firm.

Netflix Releases List of Most Watched Movies and Series of Second Half of 2024
Image
Pictures: Netflix

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Netflix Viewing Up 5% in Second Half of 2024, ‘Squid Game 2’ Leads as Most-Watched TV Series
Image
Netflix subscribers streamed more content than ever in the back half of 2024 — and the second season of Korean hit drama “Squid Game” was the biggest TV show on the service.

The streamer’s customers watched more than 94 billion hours on Netflix in the second half of last year, a 5% increase year over year, according to its latest Engagement Report sharing data on what people watched on from July-December 2024.

“Squid Game” Season 2, despite premiering on Dec. 26 with only six days left in the year, dominated the period as Netflix’s most-viewed series with nearly 87 million views. That said, no single title accounts for more than 1% of total viewing on Netflix. For example, “Squid Game 2” represented only 0.7% of global viewing for the time period. That’s “why we invest in a wide variety of quality shows and films and why we need to make them great, so that every time a member...

Annie Awards Set to Honor 2024’s Animation Achievements, Aid Community Hit by Fires
Image
The board of Asifa-Hollywood, the organization behind the 52nd annual Annie Awards, pondered, like many other organizers behind events on the awards season calendar, whether the show should be postponed or scaled back because of the devastating fires that ravaged Los Angeles in early January. Many members of the animation community are among those who’ve been severely impacted.

“We represent the animation community and it’s really important to us, especially at this time, that we support them a thousand percent,” says Asifa-Hollywood executive director Aubry Mintz. And after much discussion, the board decided that the show will go on, albeit with a somewhat more somber tone and featuring the announcement of efforts to consolidate resources and support for those in the community dealing with various (and in many cases multiple) losses.

“We discussed this with the board: ‘What are the implications if we go forward with the Annies...

Christmas action films, Red One and Carry-On, topped the streaming charts in December
Image
‘Twas the season to be thrilled with action. As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. His Santa action flick would be followed by Netflix’s Carry-On, which stars Taron Edgerton as a Tsa agent working on Christmas Eve when he’s faced with a terrorist plot.

Red One faced much criticism for its content, but the newest live-action film from megastar Dwayne Johnson topped the streaming charts in December with 2.1 billion minutes of viewing. Meanwhile, while finishing in second overall, Carry-On was...

Kevin Costner's Horizon Beats Furiosa at the Streaming Game on Netflix After Both Flopped in Theaters
Image
In recent years, people needed a good reason to go to the theater and spend money and several hours on a film after the rise of the streaming services. 2024 was a guessing game at the box office because many blockbusters failed to bring the numbers they intended, Kevin Costner's Western Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1 and Furiosa: A Mad Max Story included.

On paper, the two films had what it took to become a success story at the box office. A star-studded cast, a popular pre-existent IP in Furiosa's case, and generous budgets. Following their unfortunate theatrical run, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 and Furiosa: A Mad Max Story became successful on Netflix following their release on the platform last week, entering the top 10.

One Of Liam Neeson's Worst Movies Becomes Global Netflix Hit 2 Years Later

One of Liam Neeson's worst movies has become a global Netflix hit two years after its release. From there, Neeson took on several roles in blockbuster movies, including Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins, and Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy.

However, starting in 2009, Neeson established himself as a prominent action star with roles in the Taken movies, The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, and Cold Pursuit. He's collaborated multiple times with director Jaume Collet-Serra, starring in four of his action films – Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. Adam Driver's career has starkly divided both critics and audiences. The actor's strong points have been quite so, with films such as BlacKkKlansman and Paterson scoring a universally positive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Driver's career has also included several other movies with Rotten Tomatoes scores in the 90s, including early indie hits such as Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis as well as mainstream favorites like Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On the other hand, the actor's lows have gone pretty low, including his 36% Tomatometer for 65 and 44% for This is Where I Leave You.

What is odd about Driver is that even his better-rated movies have been the subject of mockery and memes. This most notably includes Marriage Story, which, despite earning Driver an Oscar nomination and strong critical reviews, has been the subject of ridicule in the years since its release. This year, Driver was in the mixed-reviewed Megalopolis,...

Fans Hate 'Ferry 2' Despite It Dominating the Netflix Global Charts
Image
Squid Game Season 2 was released today, Dec. 26, 2024, which follows arguably the biggest breakthrough in international television of all time. The first season of the South Korean drama became Netflix's most-watched series, prompting the platform to bring in many more acclaimed non-English shows. Even before Squid Game, though, Netflix was airing great international series like Undercover, the Belgian-Dutch crime show that led to the acclaimed prequel film, Ferry. While hardly as successful as Squid Game, the franchise developed a fanbase nonetheless, so, of course, there's now another title — Ferry 2.

The film follows Ferry and Ferry: The Series, which both earned a strong following and became beloved by fans of international crime dramas. While Ferry 2 is becoming another hit in terms of streaming numbers, fans of the franchise aren't too happy with it and how the movie treats its titular character, Ferry Bouman. One fan of the first film and Undercover,...

'Love Actually' Director Addresses People Finding Cue Card Scene Stalkerish
Image
Believe it or not, Love Actually’s writer and director, Richard Curtis, was completely oblivious to the fact that some viewers found Mark’s (Andrew Lincoln) obsession with Juliet (Keira Knightley) uncomfortable — a strange climax which ultimately resulted in an eerie stalker scene folded into an otherwise heartwarming movie. Today, the classic 2003 Christmas film remains a holiday favorite for many fans, but that particular love story in Curtis’ anthology stands out for all the wrong reasons.

Curtis admits that he did think the relationship between Mark and Juliet was “weird,” but he never really contemplated how creepy Mark’s infatuation with his best friend’s (Chiwetel Ejiofor) wife would come across on-screen. The iconic rom-com writer and director addressed the controversial issue while promoting his latest movie, Last Christmas. Curtis said (per IndieWire):

“He actually turns up to his best friend’s house to say to his best friend’s wife,...

Margot Robbie's $1B Blockbuster Lands On Netflix's US Top 10 Chart
Image
A billion-dollar Margot Robbie movie has found additional success on streaming. Robbie is an Australian actor who had her international breakthrough when she played a supporting role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Since then, she has been nominated for three Oscars, one as a producer, and two as an actor for her performances in 2017's I, Tonya and 2019's Bombshell.

In addition to earning critical accolades, many Margot Robbie movies have become blockbuster hits. This includes the 2016 DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad, in which she played iconic antihero Harley Quinn, which grossed $749.2 million against its reported budget of $175 million. While that was one of her biggest hits, other Robbie titles that have grossed more than $100 million include the 2021 sequel The Suicide Squad, Peter Rabbit, Focus, and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

$261M Terminator Disappointment Finds Redemption In Netflix's Global Chart 5 Years Later
Image
One of the Terminator franchise's biggest commercial disappointments has found streaming success on Netflix. Since the first movie was released in 1984, there have been six Terminator movies and two television series in the long-running franchise. The franchise's first movie, directed and written by James Cameron, set the tone and established Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, along with presenting the now iconic characters of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.

The first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is widely considered to be the franchise's best movie, along with being one of the best all-time movie sequels. None of the ensuing movies, released from 2003-2019, were able to reach the same level of acclaim as the original two installments. The franchise expanded onto television with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which aired from 2008-2009, along with Terminator Zero, an anime series that debuted on Netflix in 2024.

Image
Christmas action turned out to be a widely popular genre this year, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Red One taking over Prime Video and Taron Egerton's Carry-On breaking records on Netflix. The two action films have received a lot of popularity, and Carry-On continues to be a huge success for the streaming service.

Netflix confirmed Carry-On continues to be a major hit on the streaming service, topping the charts for the week between Dec. 16 and Dec 23 with 55.1 million views, equivalent to 110.2 million hours viewed. This is an even stronger week than the first one, as the film debuted with 42 million views. It beat other Christmas titles from the streamer, becoming the number-one movie in 88 countries in its second week, including the U.S. and Canada.

Richard Curtis: When We Finished ‘Love Actually,’ ‘It Was a Catastrophe’
Image
The below was part of a previously published interview with “Love Actually” writer/director Richard Curtis.

“Love Actually” may be all around, but according to filmmaker Richard Curtis, the beloved holiday rom-com staple was a “catastrophe” to make.

Curtis told IndieWire while promoting his animated film debut “That Christmas” that “Love Actually” was a pain to edit due to the anthology stories intersecting. The 2003 film starred Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and more.

“The strange thing about ‘Love Actually’ is, when we finished the movie, it was a catastrophe,” Curtis said. “It took six months to re-edit it and learn all these lessons about how to do a multi-thread story.”

Curtis continued, “When I wrote ‘Love Actually,’ and we had the read-through, and it sounded great, I thought you would probably do A, B, C, D, E, F, G. But actually when you’re doing multi-story,...

‘Carry-On’ Closes In On Netflix All-Time Top 10 As ‘Virgin River’s Return Takes Top Weekly TV Spot
Image
Carry-On, a film about traveling through the airport at Christmas, is on course to break into Netflix’s top ten films of all time.

The thriller, which stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, and Sofia Carson, bested its performance last week by adding another 55M views on top of last week’s 42M number. It remains number one on Netflix’s weekly film charts, having already become Netflix’s biggest launch of a film this year.

Given that it has scored 97M views in its first ten days, Carry-On, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Amblin Partners, it could well enter Netflix’s top ten films of all time. For reference, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery wrapped up 136.3M views in its first month to take the ten spot, Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother is number nine with 136.4M views, We Can Be Heroes got 137.3M for...

The 5 Best New Movies on Netflix in December 2024
Image
Need something new to watch on Netflix? With the holidays upon us, no doubt folks are about to do some much deserved clocking out of work and settling in for streaming hours. Netflix has a surprisingly short supply of new movies this month, with less than 10 archival films announced to arrive on the first (when the bulk of new titles are usually added) and a slighter-than-usual handful of originals too. Not to worry, we were still able to handpick five must-watch titles among the bunch, so here’s this month’s curated list of the best new movies on Netflix right now.

Netflix ‘That Christmas’

Co-written and produced by “Love Actually” filmmaker Richard Curtis and based on Curtis’ trilogy of popular children’s books, the animated holiday film “That Christmas” stages a series of intertwined Christmas tales in a fashion that will be familiar to any “Love Actually” fan. Featuring...

Richard Curtis interview | That Christmas, Love Actually and Pulp Fiction
Image
To make a multi-thread Christmas classic once is a misfortune – to make one twice starts to look like carelessness… We sat down with Richard Curtis to talk That Christmas, and the surprising influences on Love Actually…

In late April – the most festive month of the year, some say – Locksmith Animation was in a state of calm. The Ron’s Gone Wrong studio’s latest film, That Christmas, was in the proverbial can; as the name suggests, it wasn’t due to go before an audience for another six months.

Based on a trio of children’s books by Richard Curtis and illustrator Rebecca Cobb, How To Train Your Dragon alum Simon Otto’s film version was taking its writer back to familiar territory. Not just a new Christmas film, but a multi-thread one, from the man who penned the most-successful example of the genre in Love Actually just over two decades ago.

10 Best British Christmas Movies, Ranked
Image
The majority of classic Christmas movies are American, but Britain has also produced a few holiday heartwarmers over the years. The most obvious example is Love Actually, which often features in conversations about the very best Christmas movies, but there are many more British Christmas movies, even if they don't all have big international audiences. Many of these Christmas movies feature famous faces from Hollywood blockbusters.

The worst Christmas movies are often accused of cheap sentimentality, but this is something that British movies tend to avoid, simply because there isn't the same abundance of Christmas content each year. The few that have any kind of lasting relevance tend to offer something different to American Christmas movies, either because they focus on British holiday traditions or because they have quirky British humor.

The Best Christmas Movies on Netflix Right Now
Image
Christmas is almost here, which means lots of hot cocoa, frenzied shopping and wrapping gifts. But the perfect cure for the stress of the holiday season is a great Christmas movie, and there are a handful of solid films currently available to stream on Netflix. Below, we’ve rounded up a curated list of the best Christmas movies on Netflix right now, from bona fide classics to new favorites.

Photo credit: Netflix A Christmas Prince

The one that started it all — “A Christmas Prince” was Netflix’s first foray into the Christmas Romance genre, and the 2017 film was such a hit, it essentially put the streamer on the map as a new go-to destination in the market previously dominated by Lifetime and Hallmark. Ever-charming “Ghosts” and “iZombie” star Rose McIver stars as Amber, an ambitious journalist who infiltrates the Aldovian Royalty under the guise of tutoring young Princess Emily (Honor Kneafsey...

‘Carry-On’ Continues Its Netflix Lead, and Christmas Bargain Hunting Dominates VOD
Image
Christmas bargain shopping usually doesn’t start until December 26. But this week’s Video on Demand top 10 lists suggest the sales started early. And once again this year, Ron Howard’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal) leads the way.

Overall, nine different holiday-related movies charted either at iTunes or Fandango (as VOD) or among the current top 10 movies streaming on Netflix. For the latter, that includes their original thriller “Carry-On,” with the Christmas Eve-set movie starring Tagon Egerton and Jason Bateman #1 for the second straight week.

It’s an odd year for VOD, with fewer than usual top recent films getting a pre-holiday release with potential digital gift ability. None of November’s four biggest hits, “Gladiator II” will go digital after its fifth weekend in theaters. It is likely to lead VOD activity both because of its strengths and the lack of competition during this period.

'That Christmas' will keep you hooked this holiday season
Image
That Christmas, based on the trilogy of beloved children's books, is all about breaking the norms and finding more fun ways to make your Christmas holidays better and more memorable regardless of any shortcomings. The picture-perfect scenario of a Christmas Eve created by the movies is usually not true.

It is a popular belief that Christmas celebrations are incomplete without an extravagant dinner accompanied by the merry-making of loved ones. But in reality, it is hardly possible to recreate a movie-like scenario for any of your holiday plans because life usually throws lemons right when you hardly need one.

This heart-touching movie, That Christmas, is all about trying our best to make the most of what we can do in the face of adversity. Nobody ever wants to dampen the spirits of their Christmas holidays by undergoing unforeseen situations that are usually beyond their control. But if you incur one,...

“Smile 2” Paramount

Paramount+ – Dec. 3

The sequel to 2022’s surprise hit “Smile,” which was originally meant to be a direct-to-Paramount+ title, “Smile 2” is bigger, stranger and more unsettling. Instead of a small town therapist, writer/director Parker Finn’s follow-up focuses on Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), an international pop star. That means that her encounter with the demon,...

All of Netflix’s 2024 Original Christmas Movies, Ranked
Image
Haul out the holly, Netflix’s entire 2024 Christmas slate is here, and we watched every one of them. So, if you’re wondering which ones to prioritize, or maybe which order to watch them in, we’re happy to guide you.

The streamer began their rollout at the beginning of November, releasing one new movie every Wednesday, culminating on Dec. 4. There are five in total, ranging pretty widely in concepts. One follows an all-male revue, another follows a hot snowman come to life, another features Pentatonix playing cupid.

Such is the beauty of Christmas movies. Here’s how we’d rank them.

Netflix 5. The Merry Gentlemen

On its face, “Christmas Magic Mike” sounds like it should be awesome. And in fairness, those elements in “The Merry Gentlemen” are awesome. But they aren’t strong enough to carry the rest of the film, which leans a little too far into the...

DreamWorks Animation leads the 2025 Annie Awards feature competition with 10 nominations, including for best feature, best FX and best character animation, it was announced on Friday.

‘The Wild Robot’ leads the way at 2025 Annie Awards nominations
Image
The Wild Robot continues to emerge as the animated feature to beat this season after leading the nominations for the 2025 Annie Awards.

The Universal Pictures film from DreamWorks Animation led the way with 10 nominations today, followed by Disney-Pixar’s record-breaking blockbuster Inside Out 2 and Netflix’s latest from Aardman, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, with seven mentions apiece. All three films are up for Best Feature, joined by That Christmas, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Ultraman: Rising.

These awards are voted on by professional and patron members of Asifa-Hollywood who have two or more professional animation credits and contributed professional services over the last two years that contributed to animated projects. While this is a peer group award like the Oscars, but the Annie winners don’t always match the Motion Picture Academy’s.

Annie Awards 2025: ‘The Wild Robot’ Leads with 10 Nominations

No other film came close to this number, though “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” from Aardman and Netflix and “Inside Out 2” from Pixar Animation were closest with 7 nominations each. “That Christmas” from Locksmith Animation and Netflix also fared pretty well, eking out 6 nominations, including in major categories like Best Feature.

Netflix Thriller ‘Carry-On’ Soars Past ‘Landman’ on Streaming Top 10 | Chart
Image
It took a force like Taylor Sheridan to topple Max’s dominant run atop the streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report last week. This week, it’s another streaming super power’s turn, as Netflix denies Sheridan the rare opportunity to top both the streaming and linear top 10 lists.

Netflix’s return to the top spot is thanks to “Carry-On.” The thriller has a holiday angle – all of the action happens on Christmas Eve – which helped it give Netflix its first chart topper since “The Perfect Couple,” way back on the Sept. 19 edition of the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report.

“Landman,” the Taylor Sheridan creation that topped last week’s chart, slides down to No. 2 this week. It’s one of just two non-Netflix titles on this week’s chart as the streamer dominates holiday season viewership.

The other, “Red One” on Amazon Prime Video, is yet another holiday-oriented action movie,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Terminator: Dark Fate' is Streaming on Netflix
Image
Nothing says Christmas like a good Arnie movie, at least that is what Netflix users have suggested after making one of the Big Man’s most underrated movies a hit several years after its disappointing showing at the box office. Surprisingly, that movie is not one of Schwarzenegger’s festive offerings, but Terminator: Dark Fate.

While many streaming charts are dominated by the movies of Christmas past, including a more joyous offering from the Austrian Oak in Jingle All The Way, it seems that Netflix subscribers are a different breed. Although the most recent version of The Grinch is holding tight at No.2 on the global chart, the top spot is held by Taron Egerton's action thriller Carry-On, while No.3 is proof that there are a lot of people who just want to see a half-man, half-machine blowing things up to get them in the mood for the holidays.

First Black Doves & Now Carry-On, This Netflix Holiday Season Is All About Action Thrillers
Image
Although the holiday season is typically defined by feel-good Christmas movies, Netflix is proving that this year is all about action thrillers such as Black Doves and Carry-On. In the month of December, the Keira Knightley TV show and the Taron Egerton movie have both made waves on Netflix's list of top trending movies and shows. With star-studded casts and unique premises, this isn't a complete surprise. However, both of these projects also raise questions about what audiences are looking for during the holiday season, and whether Christmas has an effect on these action-packed projects.

At the moment, Netflix's top 10 movies and shows represent a strange mix of holiday flicks, popular new releases, and intense action stories. For example, Carry-On is currently the #1 movie on Netflix, but it sits alongside projects like That Christmas, Barbie, Subservience, and Disaster Holiday. The TV line-up is even darker, with the disaster drama La Palma...
