The biggest Grammy Award of the night is Album of the Year, meant to honor complete pieces of work that defined the music scene and impacted the culture throughout the eligibility period. The award has gone to some of the most influential records of all time, including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Adele’s “21.” While some years are more uncertain than others, this year the category seems to be a two-horse race, although a few other players might sneak their way through as well.
The frontrunners here are Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” and Sza’s “Sos.” Both records are massive commercial successes, finishing 2023 as the second and third biggest albums of the year, respectively. Both have also managed to be career peaks for these already uber-popular stars.

For Issa Rae, music has always been an extra cast member on the call sheet.
The nine-time Emmy nominee has used music as a storytelling tool, extending the voices of her complex and comedic characters — from the groundbreaking series Insecure and to her current adventure Rap Sh!t to the web series that launched her career, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
“Music elevates the storytelling of everything. I write to music, [and] you can have a scene that plays out great but music will add that little bit of tension, or that spark, or that feeling. It will cement a scene in your brain,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There are so many songs that I associate with specific scenes that have also, in turn, affected my life and my memories, and it just adds an extra feeling to that song. So, they really work hand-in-hand beautifully.”

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, a Tribute to the Troops special, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s episode!
Match #1: United States Championship Tournament – Carmelo Hayes def. Grayson Waller The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Nxt Superstar has come to SmackDown and stunned Grayson Waller to advance in the United States Championship Tournament. The brash Waller used his size advantage to down the athletic Hayes, but it would only take mere moments for Melo to prove that he is Him. One quick counter led to a First 48, and the WWE Universe was treated to a Nothing But Net leg drop from the top rope that saw Hayes punch his ticket to the semi-finals.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: United States Championship Tournament – Kevin Owens def. Austin Theory The following is courtesy of wwe.

Bringing a stripped-down version of her Sos Tour to the grounds outside Dodger Stadium on Sunday night, Sza closed out Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival — the two-day music festival curated by Tyler, the Creator — with a stylish and soulful flourish.
The performance was a victory lap of sorts for the singer-songwriter born Solána Imani Rowel, her first since her nine Grammy award nominations — a record this year — were announced on Friday.
Pulling from her critical and commercial 2022 smash album Sos, her 2017 debut Ctrl and various other sources (her 2018 Black Panther soundtrack duet with Kendrick Lamar, “All the Stars,” plus covers of Dojo Cat’s “Kiss Me More” and Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy”), Sza writhed in giddy delight, her voice as strong as ever. She even mounted a silver ball suspended in the air for her rendition of “The Weekend.”

The Sza verse we hear on “Slime You Out,” her first-ever collaboration with Drake from his eighth studio album For All the Dogs, isn’t the one she expected to land on the song. In a recent interview with the WSJ Magazine, the singer revealed that she had actually recorded two separate vocal cuts, but Drake went ahead and used the first one, causing her to feel a little uneasy at how accepting he was of her first try. It wasn’t Drake specifically that stirred up these feelings in her,...

Sza proved that brevity really is the soul of wit at the Webby Awards on May 15. While accepting the artist of the year award at the annual ceremony in New York City, the singer kept things short and sweet with a five-word speech that had the audience in stitches. "The internet scares me," she said while holding her new trophy with a huge smile on her face. After a few glances out into the crowd, she added a quick "thanks" and split. The honesty! The relatability! It's only a matter of time before clips of her to-the-point revelation start circulating Twitter as a reaction meme.
Celebrity choreographer Parris Goebel, who's collaborated with Sza through the years, presented her with the award and shared far lengthier comments about the songwriter's talent. "Sza is an undeniable force in music, and her power on the internet has moved the world,...

More than five years after her game-changing debut album, Sza finally released her long-awaited follow-up, "Sos," on Dec. 9, 2022, which has since broken several records - including sitting atop the Billboard 200 albums chart for 10 nonconsecutive weeks. Sza recently completed the first leg of her "Sos" tour and extended it on April 11 with more US and international dates this summer. But before then, it seems she'll finally drop the rumored deluxe version of her second album on account of her latest single: "Kill Bill (Remix)," featuring Doja Cat.
The "Kiss Me More" collaborators teased their new song on social media on April 13 before they dropped the track at midnight. ".@sza sis... I did something bad," Doja Cat tweeted, to which Sza replied, "Jesus.. what is it." Doja Cat then quote-tweeted the singer's response to announce their revenge remix.

2023 has been the year of Sza. Her sophomore album, “Sos,” debuted in mid-December and has only seen more success in the months since then. It spent 10 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and was acclaimed from the get-go, especially for its versatility. That part has been crucial to Sza’s success, as the album easily walks the lines between pop, R&b, hip-hop, and even alternative, making it digestible for most music lovers. So with such a diverse sound, what does this mean for her possible Grammy submissions?
It’s only fair to start from the top. It’s almost certain that Sza will submit the single “Kill Bill” to the general categories. Not only is it her biggest hit, it’s also acclaimed and will surely be her best bet at a nomination and perhaps a win. But there’s likely to be some debate over whether to submit the song to pop or R&b,...

ThankGod4Cody didn't anticipate how Sza's era-defining "Ctrl" album would completely change his life in 2017 - but he also didn't foresee waiting five years to get the call to work on her next album, "Sos." At Friday’s Bet Experience concert featuring Sza, Chris Brown, Ella Mai, and Teyana Taylor, the “Ctrl” artist executed a full set rife with experimental runs and riffs that tested her vocal range beyond the melodies. Between songs, Sza expressed her gratitude for the Staples Center audience’s support, as the show was her second live performance since she claimed on Twitter that her voice was “permanently injured.”
“You guys know it’s like my first or second time back out with y’all, so I’m very happy to be in my second home with y’all,” the singer said.

Exactly one year ago, Sza had officially made it. Praised as the voice of a generation, the singer's debut studio album, Ctrl, explored the complexities of adulthood and modern romance through the lens of the Instagram generation. Ctrl premiered at No. 3 on the Billboard charts, went platinum and helped Sza (pronounced Sizza) become the 2018 Grammys' most-nominated female performer. (Sza's breakthrough came only months after she threatened to leave the music industry over rumored issues with her label, Kendrick Lamar-fronted Top Dawg Entertainment.) But with new peaks of professional success came valleys of personal turmoil,...

James Franco is many things. The 34-year-old that starred in Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s cult now-kinda-classic NBC series Freaks and Geeks is an actor (obviously) and also an acting coach, web series creator, web series producer, Oscars host, author, student, professor, in-class snoozer, and (insert another job description here that - along with the ones listed above - is an impossibility for one human without superhuman abilities - or one of these - to possess). But is James Franco pregnant? Maybe! And we’ll know for sure after the Fact Checkers Unit has completed its investigation. You may be familiar with Fact Checkers Unit: Fcu from when the original web series first debuted as an original independent short film and Official Selection of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. The funny flick was created by and stars Peter Karinen and Brian Sacca (aka comedy duo Pete and Brian). It’s a fast-paced,...

The Washington staffers in "Veep," the first American TV series from "In the Loop"'s Armando Iannucci, are a caustic, backstabbing lot, forever scheming to advance themselves or at least hold off the underlings gunning for their jobs. All of them, that is, except for Gary, the starstruck aide played by "Arrested Development" star Tony Hale. As the “body man” to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s second in command, he’s responsible for meeting her needs even when she can’t identify them. During one moment of crisis, she calls him into her office, and yells, “Get me... something!” In a world where everyone’s out for themselves, he’s the closest thing to an altruist. Hale has amassed a long string of credits over the years, including recurring roles on "Chuck" and "Ctrl" and one that found him wooing a hairless Malin Akerman in 2010’s "happythankyoumoreplease." But his...

Looks like Hulu is getting into the Valentine's Day spirit. The premium video destination site has announced a new original series from Generate and Warner Bros. Television Group’s Studio 2.0—one of the first original programs since its announcement that it's committing $500 million to original programming. Paul The Male Matchmaker, from actor-writer Paul Bartholomew (Mad Men; Yes, Dear), will debut February 13 exclusively on Hulu. In the 10-episode series, Paul is a socially inept misogynist who, inheriting a matchmaking service from his aunt, dispenses brutal advice in his attempt to help women find love. "This show is for anyone who has ever been set up on a horribly misguided date by their sister, friend, co-worker—and then been blamed for it not working out. Which is basically everyone," said Bartholomew. Co-created by Bartholomew and best-selling author, writer, and executive producer Liz Tuccillo (He's Just Not That Into You, How to Be Single,...

I love romantic comedies. I have a good laugh, and the boy and the girl get together in the end. Usually I want the boy and the girl to get together in the end. However, Something Borrowed kind of ruined that, and left me with a romantic comedy that was not at all romantic.
Something Borrowed did have funny moments. Sadly, John Krasinski’s character Ethan was the only one bringing the laughs, and he moved to England at some point during the course of the movie. Ethan was also the only character I cared about and wanted good things for, because he was the least selfish in the entire movie.
The movie was so disappointing that I found other ways to keep myself entertained while watching the movie. One way was noticing that Geoff Pierson was in the movie as Dex’s dad. I have loved Geoff Pierson since Unhappily Ever After,...

The showrunner behind "Fcu: Fact-Checkers Unit" explains the art of product integration and the power of celebrity.
Does Alex Trebek shave against the grain? Does Karolina Kurkova use Spf 125? These are the do-or-die details magazine underlings Russell (Peter Karinen) and Dylan (Brian Sacca) must confirm in the new eight-episode NBC Digital series Fcu: Fact-Checkers Unit. [Ed. note: We feel their pain.] We called executive producer Tom Bannister, whose production company, Sxm, also helmed NBC's well-received Web series Ctrl (starring Arrested Development's Tony Hale as an office-worker with a magical keyboard), to get the inside scoop on Fcu, which debuted this week.
Fast Company: Fcu is based on a 2007 short film of the same title. How did you decide to turn the standalone movie it into a series?
Tom Bannister: All of our branded shows so far have come from short-form pieces of content--films, Web videos, etc.--that we have seen and fallen in love with.

In the world of sports, Tony Stewart is a household name. Fittingly since Nascar drivers are making TV and web cameos these days as often as their NBA and NFL colleagues, with shows like Espn.com’s Mayne Street or Vuguru’s Back on Topps regular stops for some easy publicity. But most of the time we’re talking a few choices lines and a drop in, not actually carrying a show. When Tony Stewart’s Nascar sponsor Armor All wanted to tap their star driver’s outgoing nature, they whipped up a reality web series last year called Off Track with Tony Stewart with their agency Edelman’s digital arm Matter producing. It was a modest first effort—nothing too fancy or particularly buzzworthy—but good enough for Armor All to take it a step further. You see, in the world of branded entertainment there’s the safe reality...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.

This week, NBC Universal Digital Studio launched its second original scripted comedy series In Gayle We Trust, following up on the early success of Tony Hale starring Ctrl. Written by Brent Forrester (NBC’s The Office), the series centers on the lives of the fictional residents of Maple Grove. Tying all these unique personalities together is insurance agent Gayle Evans, played by Elisa Donovan (Clueless, Beverly Hills, 90210, Sabrina The Teenage Witch), whose love of her job is infectious to those around her. “In Gayle We Trust is at the center of our desire to create compelling original digital entertainment with brands," said Cameron Death, VP of NBC Universal Digital Studio in a release. "We're excited to have American Family Insurance on board as the exclusive sponsor of this intriguing and quirky new series.” The branding of the show is straight-forward and to-the-point: Gayle is an American Family Insurance provider and...

Kudos to Paste, which hipped me to this very funny video starring Tony Hale from Arrested Development and the upcoming The Informant! To some of you, the web series Ctrl may not be news, but I had never heard of it, perhaps because I can't find another compelling reason to head over to NBC.com, especially during the summer hiatus.
But this office comedy about a guy with a literal keyboard has run ten episodes exclusively online, and apparently, that's the first time a network has commissioned original programming just for the website, meaning these aren't supporting the TV show the way The Office minisodes do.
Director Robert Kirbyson had developed what was then called Ctrl Z as a short film, which NBC picked up, and the rest is pretty easy to piece together. Now, about that literal keyboard: If Tony Hale presses Ctrl-B then he gets bolder. Ctrl-Z is a complete do-over.

Ever wish you could just click on Ctrl + Z to rewind your life? A “do-over”, ya know? Maybe you said something you wish you hadn’t or instead of eating that donut for breakfast, you wish you had opted for the bowl of cereal? Then click on over to NBC’s new web series, Ctrl starring funny-man, Tony Hale (Arrested Development). Ctrl is an outlandish comedy that should have viewers spilling a lot of Nestea after understanding the concept. (The so-called, “Liquid Awesomeness” just so happens to be the sponsor of the new show.) NBC Universal Digital Studio has developed a unique vehicle for their original online programming slate with Hale at the helm of the mighty brand awareness campaign. Stuart Grundy (Hale) has been working at the same office for too many years, sitting in his cubicle taking crap from his boss, never acting on his feelings for his boss’s assistant,...

Dating comedy web series MERRIme.com has inked an exclusive distribution deal with women's pop culture and dating site TheFrisky.com, owned by Turner Broadcasting. Created by actor-producer Kaily Smith along with David Weidoff, the indie web series was one of the higher caliber originals to be produced independently that we've seen lately. Shooting on the Red One camera, Smith teamed up with producer Shelley Stevens and director Sherwin Shilati to pull together the 20-episode series. Smith plays Merrideth 'Merri' Weisman, an attractive twentysomething Beverly Hills trust funder living the good life until her impulsive father, played by Tom Arnold, threatens to cut the cord if she doesn't get married soon. Her clinging friends, Mac (Jay Hayden) and Jessica (Andrea Syglowski), figure out a plan to get Merri hooked up back on the dating scene. This of course means plenty of comedic guest stars Tony Hale (Ctrl) and Ryan Eggold...
