Depending on whom you ask, Andy Kaufman either died on this day 29 years ago, or he pulled off one of history's greatest hoaxes. As evidence for the latter, they'll point to his career. Not the obvious one -- his "Taxi" gig or his quick-flaming stint on "Saturday Night Live" (which ended with the audience voting him off the show as part of a stunt he suggested, not thinking it would go that way). Even at the height of his mainstream success, Kaufman would tell any reporter who'd listen that all that flashy stuff was just to support his real work: his high-concept live act.
It's a long and sublimely silly list. Take the times Kaufman read The Great Gatsby aloud until the audience hissed and booed. "Would you rather listen to a tape?" he'd ask (they always said yes). But the tape simply turned out to be a recording of him reading The Great Gatsby.

Harry Potter might be finished, but that doesn’t mean magic’s vanished from the big screen. Warner Bros.’ upcoming dueling magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone promises to be a laugh riot, at least judging from the trailer that was released yesterday.
Starring Steve Carell as the title character, the film chronicles a professional magician fighting to stay relevant against a hip, new street magician, Steve Gray (Jim Carrey). Professional magicians have always been a point of ridicule, especially since the character Gob on the cult favorite Arrested Development. The profession makes for an easy target, one that’s sure to bring countless laughs throughout the film.
Rounding out the cast are Steve Buschemi, who plays Anton Marvelton, Wonderstone’s assistant; Alan Arkin, who portrays Wonderstone’s childhood magician hero Rance Holloway; and Olivia Wilde, who plays Jane. With such a hilarious cast, the movie promises a good time,...

"The Target" was a funny enough episode, but like most of what The Office has put forth in its final season, there was nothing all that special about it.
Maybe it was because I couldn't care less about the Oscar/Angela ordeal, but nothing ever really clicked to tie the half hour together. Dwight had a number of humorous moments within that story line, but the ruined friendship for Oscar and Angela was lost on me. I didn't care about the result.
Dwight: I'm not in your panties, I don't go vigilantes. Dwight: It's cruel, because a woman with damaged knees can't scrub worth a damn. Dwight: He and the senator are gaying each other. Dwight: There are a million gorgeous guys in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, and you choose the man who's a father of her child?
I was also surprisingly pleased with the work of Chris Gethard as Trevor.

We're more than halfway through No-Shave November (known as Movember to the philanthropically-inclined), and men all over the world have taken this eleventh month to show off their facial hair skills. Personally, I have abandoned my No-Shave attempt, since it was looking less like Harley from Epic Meal Time and more like Adam Morrison. However, if I had known about the new Total Bearding Network web series from IFC, I might have been inspired to keep it up. Total Bearding Network is an animated fake news program that discusses various beard-related stories such a feature on the world's first bearded woman and a look into the beard capital of the world, Brooklyn. The stories are very wacky, but what really shines are the banter segments, where the two hosts--strong-voiced Ken Guntruck and weak-willed Pete Meeker--form a news desk odd couple. Total Bearding Network's style reminded me of Waco Valley, but with more hair.

Chris Gethard, a comedian and improviser best known for his cult public access program "The Chris Gethard Show," will soon join IFC, the cable channel announced Monday.
The New York City-based comedian will host broadcast programming and create original content for IFC.com. Gethard performed a similar role for IFC last March during the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Tex.
IFC is also looking to develop Gethard's memoir, "A Bad Idea I’m About To Do: True Tales of Seriously Poor Judgment and Stunningly Awkward Adventure." They have ordered a pilot script based on the book.
Bringing Gethard into the fold of IFC is part of the channel's new "Adopt-a-Comic" program, which aims to give a wider audience to specific comedians who they deem worthy. "This program is IFC’s way of spotlighting comedians we admire," said IFC's president and general manager Jennifer Caserta. "We’re extremely grateful...

Last semi-memorably seen on the not-great Comedy Central series Big Lake, SNL alum Horatio Sanz is joining an untitled new ABC pilot from Kari Lizer (The New Adventures of Old Christine, Will & Grace). The show will star Mary McCormack as a newly unemployed executive faced with full-time motherdom to her two teens. According to Deadline, Sanz "will play the put-upon, wry-humored Jonathan," a neighbor and stay-home dad with 2-year-old twin girls. Despite the series falling squarely into at least two of the trends dominating this year's crop of new pilots, Sanz is a good dude to root for.

The series co-stars Cheech Marin, Lupe Ontiveros (from "As Good as It Gets") and Claudia Bassols. Comedian Chris Gethard Interviews A Hostile Message Board Commenter In Awkward And Fascinating Video
Much has been said about the dangers of cyber bullying and how it affects regular people, but what about those in the public eye? Comedian Chris Gethard recently starred in the Comedy Central series Big Lake. One day, he discovered a post on his IMDb page that was titled "Please Stop Acting" and proceeded to get harsher from there (sample: "The one intelligent career choice you have made thus far is to not have your agent, assuming he hasn't hung himself, post a picture on your IMDb profile."). Gethard, who's become famous in the New York comedy scene for "out of the box" ideas like waging a year-long (and successful!) campaign to get Sean “Diddy” Combs to perform in a "basement theater comedy show," decided to do something a little interesting. He tracked the commenter down (using self-described "creepy" Google techniques) and brought the guy in for an interview. Yeah,...

We don't usually feature reader/listener blog posts here at /Film (although I do hope that will change in the future). However, /Film reader, /Filmcast listener, and Tobolowsky Files [1] intern Andrew Goldfarb recently wrote a post about his work as an extra/background artist over the past four years that I could not resist re-posting here. It's informative, funny, harrowing, and kind of riveting. If you've ever wondered about the fascinating life of an extra, read on. Andrew's post was originally published at his IGN blog [2]. It has been republished here with his permission. *** For the past four years, I've worked full-time as a background actor in film and television. I went to school at the University of Connecticut. At the end of my junior year in 2007, there were rumors that the fourth Indiana Jones movie would be filming in New Haven at the Yale campus. With no idea what...

But their last-minute comedy sale to CBS is a big one: a half-hour starring Rob Schneider in his first TV series gig in 13 years. Morton, Eric and Kim Tannenbaum are executive producing, with Schneider and his brother John Schneider producing through their From Out of Nowhere Prods. I think 30 Rock might be back.
This week's episode, "When It Rains, It Pours," had a bright spot within every story line, connected on a multitude of jokes, and involved a number of funny guest stars.
About two thirds of the way through, I thought, how am I going to be able to choose quotes from this half hour? Between Tracy's time in the Cash Cab, Jack spitting out random advice, and Dr. Spaceman's brilliant return, the punch lines didn't stop this week.
As much as I enjoy the fact that Jack and Liz have such an interesting relationship, I'd much rather watch them do their thing separately. Jacky D was fantastic as he just spewed out line after line to the camera about what he has done in the past, and what his future kid should do in the future.
Take, for example, this gem: "After I'm gone you're mother might meet someone else.

Big Lake is Comedy Central's latest sitcom. It debuts tonight, August 17, 2010 at 10Pm Est. Its Executive Producers are Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. It was originally set to star a slim Horatio Sanz, 30 Rock's Chris Parnell, and Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Heder. It now stars a slim Horatio Sanz, 30 Rock's Chris Parnell, and Chris Gethard. Chris who? That's the question the show's producers and Comedy Central have been trying to answer in the weeks leading up to Big Lake's premiere. Gethard is a Ucb regular, whose schtick "revolves around telling his mother illicit, inappropriate anecdotes from his childhood, tales from the bayous of the Garden State, and geeking out on everything from X-Men to amateur wrestling to Daryl Strawberry." But despite a strong following in New York City's comedy scene, Gethard's still a relative unknown who doesn't yet have the name recognition to land appearances on Kimmel, Fallon,...
