The past year has been a fantastic year for the science fiction genre, taking it to new heights with the best sci-fi movies of 2024. Once upon a time, science fiction movies were considered to be a niche genre lacking mass appeal. Now, science fiction TV shows, video games, and especially movies have become more popular than ever before. From massive blockbuster franchises to smaller meditative indie movies, all sorts of flavors of sci-fi have cropped up in theaters in 2024.
There are two fronts a science fiction movie can succeed on. For one, the ability to quickly establish and sell a core concept or futuristic sci-fi technology through world-building, set design, and special effects is more important in science fiction than almost any other genre. Making a vision of the future believable, whether it's thousands of years from the modern age or not too far off from the present, is a...

Vanessa is a woman coping with immense grief. A year has passed since losing her young son in a tragic accident, but the pain of his absence remains an open wound. Seeking respite from her anguish, Vanessa travels with her husband Alex and his brother Martel to a remote lakeside home nestled deep in the woods. What was hoped to be an escape becomes something more mysterious.
Directed by Kourosh Ahari, Parallel tells the quiet yet profound story of Vanessa’s journey through an inherently sci-fi drama at its core, exploring the theoretical possibilities of parallel worlds.
But it approaches this heady concept in a much different manner than blockbuster multiverse adventures packed with flash and spectacle. With only a small cast including Danielle Deadwyler, Aldis Hodge, and Edwin Hodge, the film becomes an intensely intimate character study.

Despite the short length of her career, Go Min-si is one of Netflix's biggest K-drama stars and has been a part of many notable series. Things may be looking a bit tough over at Paramount+, with the streaming giant entering a pivotal point. The company is suffering a series of layoffs and testing the waters with a recent price increase. As of August 20, 2024, ad-supported Paramount+ Essential will run $8 per month, up from $6, and ad-free Paramount+ with Showtime will cost $13 per month, up from $12. Thankfully, what is not slowing down is their content, with September marking three notable movies making their streaming premiere and an abundance of great films added to their catalog.
For horror fans, the upcoming Apartment 7A offers a refreshing take on the genre backed by a sleek 1960s aesthetic. Likely to ruffle some feathers this month, We Will Dance Again will likely be the most talked about documentary in September. There are several moments on Four Tet’s new album Three that sound like Aphex Twin B-Sides, which is less a sign of a lack of imagination but instead, proof of how widespread a particular take on ambient music has become. Maybe chalk it up to YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, the platform is awash in hour-long mixes of Aphex Twin tracks on loop (sometimes accompanied by a video of a serene-looking monkey relaxing in a lake), designed to play while you focus on work or school, or whatever. While Tenet may struggle with complexity, Parallel excels in simplifying its plot for audience understanding. Parallel focuses on grief and alternate realities, making it easier to engage with than any of Tenet's bold ideas. The sci-fi genre benefits from thought-provoking themes, showcased by Parallel's refreshing approach to storytelling.
While Christopher Nolan's Tenet is enjoying positive reassessment four years after its debut, one science fiction movie perfectly fixes one of Tenet's core issues: Parallel. Even with Nolan explaining Tenet in greater detail, watching the movie for the first time still runs the risk of being a little too esoteric for general audiences to latch onto and really grasp. As such, what is otherwise a unique approach to both the action and science fiction genres, ends up feeling more like a mix-match of too many bold ideas, with none of them ever quite blending well.

Aldis Hodge spoke with us about adapting Parallel as the first feature from Hodge Brothers Productions. He and Edwin were "captured by the deep subtlety of complexities" from the Chinese film, Parallel Forest. They didn't want to "duplicate or replicate" the original, but "honor the story that we saw" as an "homage." Hodge frankly says, "Getting a film made is the hardest thing you could ever do in this industry. It is by no small means an easy feat. But it was a great education. One that I'm really grateful for.
