If you felt like Komi Can’t Communicate ended a little too quickly, you’re not alone. Fans were left scratching their heads, asking themselves why a show that was so great had to conclude so suddenly. But surprise, surprise! We now know why. It seems that Tomohito Oda, the mastermind behind Komi’s adorable, clumsy tale, wanted to get a break from the manga grind to hang out with family, particularly their young child.

And honestly? That’s a decision we should all respect. The manga industry is no joke, with creators often sacrificing their health and their lives just to stay ahead of insane deadlines. So, Oda choosing family over work? That’s the kind of bold move we don’t see often enough.

Anime has become more and more mainstream among the newer generations, with over 40% of Gen Z admitting to enjoying the genre. With the world of anime changing with the tide of every passing generation, what was popular back then may not resonate as much with newer viewers coming into the fold.
One Piece and Naruto, although great, just aren’t as popular with younger anime fans as they are with older audiences. Longer series tend to deter younger viewers, especially if they're more than a decade old. It’s only natural that younger generations gravitate towards current anime with characters, stories, and humor that they can better relate to and keep up with.

With Studio Ghibli perpetually churning out alleged "final films" from the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, fans of the iconic Japanese animation studio find themselves in a familiar position — cherishing the stellar library of masterpieces they have while seeking anime alternatives that capture that Studio Ghibli magic. Thankfully, Kamome Shirahama's delightful, award-winning manga series, Witch Hat Atelier, is due for a Spring 2025 anime release and offers a successor for Ghibli enthusiasts.
The premise is simple: after a tragic turn of events, a dressmaker's daughter self-actualizes in an unexpected world of arcane study and adventure. Like Studio Ghibli favorites, Witch Hat Atelier is a wholehearted fantasy tale, complete with complex magic systems, nuanced characters, and coming-of-age themes. From breathtaking artistic detail to its transposing art as a form of magic itself, Witch Hat Atelier is the perfect new anime for Miyazaki fans to "spirit away" to.

The 2020s have seen several manga and anime franchises become huge properties, with the increase in anime's popularity being a rising tide for the medium as a whole. One of these success stories was Komi Can't Communicate, with the immense sales of the manga resulting in a hit anime. Said manga has now come to an end, and this means big things for the adaptation.
The Komi Can't Communicateanime only adapted a small part of the award-winning manga, leaving a lot still on the table. It didn't help that the manga was still running, creating the risk of catching up with the source material too quickly. With that no longer the case, there are multiple episodes and perhaps even seasons in the future for the slice of life anime.

When most think of anime, they picture long-running series that last for many years with multiple seasons. When a series is popular, it’s especially expected for it to stick around for a long while. Classics like Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece have hundreds of episodes for fans to enjoy, making them staples of the medium. But as the years have gone by, anime has gotten shorter and shorter, usually capping at around 12 or 13 episodes. These shorter series don’t even adapt the full manga, leaving the story unfinished.
Many anime series have ended way earlier than they should have over the years, and even the most popular titles aren’t immune to this disappointing phenomenon. Though it’s always a shock, anime end prematurely for many reasons, from an unfinished manga to production issues and more. While it’s unclear if these titles will ever get a continuation,...

It's easy for any anime fan to find a popular new title to try, such as action series like Kaiju No. 8 or romance anime like Komi Can't Communicate, but the real fun is finding hidden gems or half-forgotten anime. Those titles feel like a fresh treat when anime fans stumble upon them on the major streaming platforms, and even if those anime were never 10/10 classics, they are still rewarding to watch after being found in remote corners of the anime world.
Some of these hidden gem anime were once fairly mainstream but have since fallen into partial obscurity with the lack of new seasons, or got overshadowed by a bigger, more popular anime of a similar genre. All of them deserve another chance at popularity, so if enough anime fans track down these half-forgotten gems and try them out, these series might re-enter the conversation, at least for a brief time.

When two Japanese anime characters form a duo, those characters either complete one another or challenge each other, and there is always a sense of co-dependency. In a trio, however, there are ongoing tensions, a strong sense of competition, and rivalry that can also become jealousy, making the whole group much more interesting. However, many of the most iconic trios, such as Jesse, James and Meowth and Winry, Alphonse and Edward, have an underlying current of true care.
There are many iconic trios in the anime world, some composed entirely of villains, others of heroes, and some a mix of the two. Some trios are strong and determined main characters; others feature shy and quiet protagonists; still others are made of remarkable side characters. All these trios have one thing in common: they make the story unique and truly memorable.

Anime is usually geared toward one of the four major demographics, with adult anime fans getting the most mileage out of seinen and josei. Seinen and josei tend to feature older character and deep content for adults, setting such anime apart from shonen and shojo. That means typical anime fans over 30 won't find much to like about shonen and shojo, especially of those anime series focus on the lives and angst of teenage characters.
As a general rule, anime fans 30 and over won't find much to like about teenage heroes, since those viewers can no longer relate to protagonists half their age, weakening the appeal of teen-centric anime series. Exceptions will always exist, such as older anime fans who get occasional nostalgia for their teen years through anime. That said, plenty of anime series are clearly written for tween or teenage viewers and won't have much to say to anime...

One of the most beloved romantic comedies in manga, Komi Can't Communicate by Oda Tomohito, is coming to a heartfelt conclusion this winter. After nearly a decade of charming readers with its unique blend of humor, tenderness, and a deeply relatable protagonist, the series will end in just three chapters. Fans worldwide have followed Komi Shouko’s journey from an isolated “cool beauty” to someone striving to connect with others, making this ending both bittersweet and celebratory.
The story's premise, about a popular but painfully shy girl determined to make 100 friends, resonated with many readers who recognized their struggles in her endearing awkwardness. The topic of whether to update an anime series with modern production values is a surprisingly tricky one, especially when a certain franchise already has one more than one anime adaptation. Fans always want to see their favorite manga and light novel franchises come to life in anime form, but the end result isn't always satisfying. Some older anime series are held back with dated and limited production techniques, and some anime never looked that good to begin with.
Re-animating a series is always a huge undertaking, most of all for the longer series, but that won't stop fans from daydreaming about their favorite anime getting a fresh coat of paint. If time and money allowed it, then today's animation studios would please countless viewers by making a new animated series based on an existing franchise, some for the second or even third time. And while some older anime titles...

Tomohito Oda, the creator of Komi Can’t Communicate, has no doubt crafted a story that is beloved for its simplicity and heartwarming themes. There is something relatable and close to the empathy factor when it comes to the themes of social awkwardness and difficulty in making friends.
Scary and expressionless Komi Shoko | Credits: Studio Olm
These factors have been taken up as the very core of the work by Tomohito Oda, and he decided that he would make sure that a story about a socially awkward misfit making an absurdly large amount of friends is successful. And he did, but at what cost to the narrative?
Let us delve deeper into the ambitions of the author and what it has resulted in at the end of the day. Komi could communicate and that was supposed to be the highlight, but running after numbers made it get lost in the huge...

When an anime protagonist is well-written and accomplishes incredible things, the community is bound to take notice and praise that character as one of the best leads in the medium. By now, anime has plenty of legendary protagonists, from Son Goku to Ash Ketchum and Naruto Uzumaki, and even antiheroes like Light Yagami. Still, there are many more anime protagonists who have plenty to offer but don't get much recognition for it.
Some of these underrated protagonists are due a little more credit, and some of them are due a lot more credit. Too often, they are underestimated or half-forgotten by the community, or get ignored in favor of a similar protagonist who's flashier and more prominent in the industry. However, if anime fans give these underated protagonists another look, they will realize how smart, noble, funny, or compelling these heroes actually are — or rather, how compelling they have always been.

No part of the anime fandom is more universally disliked than live-action adaptations. Most live-action anime have ruined their source materials thanks to poor visuals and terrible mishandlings of the original stories, and in the case of projects like Cowboy Bebop and Dragonball Evolution, they’re regarded as not just terrible adaptations, but some of the worst movies and TV shows ever made, in general.
Live-action anime adaptations more than deserve their poor reputation, but that has improved in recent years. Between the visual spectacle of Battle Angel Alita and how effortlessly Netflix’s live-action One Piece handled its source material, some live-action anime adaptations have at least something that makes them worth watching, and because of that, there’s still plenty of reason for people to hope that live-action adaptations of their favorite anime will do their source material justice. That would really only apply to a select few anime,...

Komi Can’t Communicate made its anime debut with huge fanfare, but you might have noticed that the series barely gets mentioned now. While many people were attracted to the series’ unique plot as it dealt with social anxiety, they slowly realized that rather than a realistic portrayal, Komi Can’t Communicate takes it to an extreme level.
The main protagonist, Komi Shouko, is a girl with severe social anxiety, and it is to the point that she immediately freezes up in front of people and can’t talk. While the premise is acceptable and praiseworthy, the development of the character isn’t.

One of those stories was Tomohito Oda’s Komi Can’t Communicate, which debuted in May 2016, and as of now, is in its final arc. The series was a big hit when it started, but recently it has been going through a tough phase.

Autism is underrepresented in Japanese anime, with ambiguous coding masking true representation, due to the industry being reluctant to tackle these characters head on. Fictional characters may exhibit traits aligning with autism, but creators rarely confirm diagnoses, so it's left up to the audience to interpret it as they please. Ideally, anime will represent characters with autism more officially in the future, but for now, coding and interpretation will have to suffice and are a step in the right direction.

Society has long stigmatized depression. Despite this — or perhaps because of this — many anime series aren't afraid of addressing mental health issues. While it's difficult to broach these topics in a sensitive manner, dozens of anime series have skillfully explored what it's like to live with depression and the ways people struggle to cope with their trauma.
Some anime manage to accurately depict depression, which can feel priceless to viewers who can relate. With depressed protagonists like Fruits Basket's Tohru Honda and Neon Genesis Evangelion's Shinji Ikari, audiences can view mental health issues through various relatable lenses.
