Howdy folks it's Jason here - with this week's "Beauty vs Beast" we gave some thanks for two classic Christina Ricci performances (have you voted yet?) but it's a rich world with lots of good to great stuff in it so here are a few more things that have brought a big dumb smile to my big dumb face this year.

- For Getting On and the spectacular showcase it's given three crazy talented actresses (not to mention all the smaller roles they fill in with even more under-used gems), letting each of them be both hysterically funny and heartbreaking within the matter of milliseconds (and for introducing the phrase "anal horn" into my vocabulary - that one's a keeper!)

- For the venom that dripped off of Rose Byrne's every ace line reading in Spy (this scene in particular)

- For whoever is tailoring Chad Radwell's khakis on...

In January 2014, I spoke with Will Scheffer about his HBO series "Getting On" for this publication:

And now we fast forward almost two years later and the show is in its third and final season. In our interview, Scheffer looks back at his experiences with the show and talks about collaborating with his husband, Mark V Olsen – creator, executive producer and writer of "Getting On" and their other shows, including "Big Love."

In addition to the HBO American cable channel, "Getting On" can be seen on HBO Latin America and HBO Europe and Asia, and through Sky (France, UK, Spain, and so on.)

Kouguell: With the increase of the global cable markets and increasing platforms, reaching a broader audience, how has this affected your shows?

Scheffer: It was gratifying to have read about "Getting On’s" reception in Paris (where they love the show) before the recent attacks and to know that this show speaks particularly to issues of loss and wounding and grief but in a way that enables laughter to mix with heartbreak. This season has so much more resonance to me as it is a comedy. It’s not escapist. It’s healing comedy. You can laugh and cry in the darkest of hours and to me, that’s the greatest service to provide as an artist. To allow people to experience their common humanity. Without self-importance. Experiencing and accepting the fragility of life, of being human, is a wonderful place to begin from.

Kouguell: Looking back at the three seasons of "Getting On," what were some of the most poignant and/or memorable moments for you working with the actors and writers?

Scheffer: We felt that by choosing "Getting On" to adapt we were entering into “stewarding” function with our British team. We wrote all of the episodes and the first two seasons had a lot of material from the original series to adapt, but the final season was all original story. Still, we went to London and ran our ideas by the original creators and worked with them. That relationship, receiving their input bonded us in a way that was unique to most adaptations. The fact that Vicki Pepperdine and Joanna Scanlan appear in Episode 4 as their original characters and meet their American counterparts, and vice versa— felt so amazing. It’s something we’d never seen before and it speaks to the way the British show and the American show are so different but like siblings, so connected. We share the same blood. So that’s a long-winded way of saying, going to London for a week to work with “the girls’ was a high point.

It’s hard to single out moments because working with our actors was the greatest experience of my career. Watching Niecy Nash bloom, seeing Mel Rodriguez and Alex Borstein prove how brilliant they are. Experiencing Laurie Metcalf’s genius (I mean she is a national treasure — beyond, beyond) and then all of our guest and co-stars. Just this season alone: Harry Dean Stanton, Mary Kay Place, Francis Conroy, Rhea Perlman, June Sqibb, Kristen Johnson, Jonathan Silverman, Jayma Mays, Daniel Stern, Rita Moreno, Grant Bowler, Janis Ian!!! Meeting Didi’s family -- Marsha, Corey, Gloria and Scott -- they felt like a real family. Anne Guilbert as Birdie. Not to mention the other great women we were able to work with like Betty Buckley, Tsai Chin, Jean Smart, Irma P. Hall, Alia Shawkat, Carrie Preston, Molly Shannon— I can’t even list them all, I know I’m forgetting people and not even mentioning the supporting cast who were brilliant. These diverse, brilliant actors in just 18 episodes.

Kouguell: This is the second show you have created for HBO, "Big Love" ran for 5 seasons and like "Getting On," pushed the envelope in its examination of timely, hot button issues. For Big Love, the show was not just about polygamy and the power of the church, at its core it was about family. In "Getting On," some of the major topics/themes you tackle are ageism and the health care system. While "Getting On" is very funny, it also strikes a major chord of realism. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Scheffer: I think I mentioned already the theme of human frailty. And I just can’t stress enough how I believe it is an “undervalued” value in our society. I mean we all get old and die. It’s not sexy but it’s part of life. And it doesn’t have to be shoved out of our consciousness or romanticized or treated sentimentally or “importantly.” It’s life. And I wish people knew what they were missing by avoiding dealing with their fears about it. It’s like, do you wanna deal with those fears now or do it later when it’s gonna be a real drag?

It was such a privilege for Mark and me to both be with our moms when they were dying. Sure it was hard, but it was incredibly layered and sometimes funny and of course heartbreaking -- but it was like I wanted to tell everyone: “Hey, you really should experience this, because it’s so amazing, even though it hurts, too.”

Kouguell: The main characters (with the exception of the brilliant Patsy) focus mainly on women and their relationships with their patients and with their colleagues. There is so much talk in the industry now about the lack of women’s roles particularly in the ‘over 40’ category. What are your thoughts on this?

Scheffer: Yeah. Well. That’s always been the case. And I think it’s finally changing. The volatility in the business is palpable and I think that finally that really big ugly fact about Hollywood is going to change. It has to. I know we’re going to keep writing great roles for women because, lucky for us, we’re good at it, I think.

Kouguell: What can we expect from this final season?

Scheffer: Well. It’s the final season. So expect big stories, some big reveals and I’d say that I think the finale is one I will always be very proud of.

Now's your last chance. The third and final season of HBO's "Getting On" starts November 8, so you can still catch this unsung show while it's fresh. Why it never got the buzz of other HBO comedies is unclear. Sure, it's a funny show about a grim topic (dying), but that didn't stop "Six Feet Under" from becoming a critical and popular success.

Quality doesn't always mean popularity, as the following gallery of 10 currently underrated, little-watched series demonstrates. Granted, it's hard to make an emotional investment and time commitment to a show that might be on the cancellation bubble. So enjoy these while you can.

Todd Haynes‘ filmography is often overwhelming in its intellectual acumen and emotional devastation. The two, for Haynes, seem to be inextricable, which is evident in projects whose loglines might seem heady — the Bob Dylan mythos presented as six actors, postmodern Sirkian melodrama, a study of femininity and fame, etc. — but whose actual presence is grounded in a singular emotional decadence.

This is true of Carol, which is at once a return to the deconstruction of femininity, social mores, and mild anarchy of privilege, as well as an honest and heartbreaking story about falling in love and the trepidation therein. We talked to Todd Haynes about how he approaches the construction of identity in his films, the persona inhabited and navigated through in Carol, and what it was like to articulate the danger of falling in love on screen.

Cycling's biggest-ever doping scandal races onto the big screen in the trailer for Lance Armstrong biopic The Programme.

Lone Survivor's Ben Foster portrays the disgraced cyclist in the intense sports drama from Philomena director Stephen Frears.

Framing the movie is the efforts by journalist David Walsh (Chris O'Dowd) to expose Lance Armstrong as a doper during his seven-year Tour de France triumph.

Frears's book is based on Walsh's bestselling memoir Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong, winner of the 2013 Irish Book Award in the sports category.

In the wake of the scandal that ruined Armstrong's international reputation, the cyclist issued a public apology earlier this year to those who he's wronged.

BBC Four has announced that Puppy Love will not return for a second season.

In a statement issued this afternoon (April 24), the channel confirmed that the sitcom - created by Getting On's Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine - had been cancelled.

"Puppy Love was a great series but won't be coming back to BBC Four as we look to bring new comedy shows through," a representative of the BBC told TVWise.

"Huge thanks to the wonderfully talented Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine and all involved in the making of the show."

Puppy Love premiered back in November 2014 and ran for just six episodes.

The show centred on dog trainer Nany V (Scanlan) and the dog training classes she ran in the Wirral.

Pepperdine co-starred as class attendee Naomi Singh, alongside Selina Borji, Simon Fisher-Becker and Aron Julius.

We’re mourning the loss this morning of David Carr, the culture writer and critic for The New York Times since 2002. Carr wrote about movies, television, celebrities, media, and popular culture as they intersected with politics and society, and as a favorite journalist of this writer, no one did it better.

The New York Times has his full obituary, in which they reported that Carr, 58, collapsed in the office Thursday and was pronounced dead shortly after. Just that day, he had moderated a panel interview with Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald and Edward Snowden via video to discuss Poitras’s documentary Citizenfour.

Carr was recently featured in the documentary Page One: Inside the New York Times, in which he has a fantastic scene chewing out some new media journalists from Vice. But some of my favorite Carr features were the video discussions he did with New York Times film critic A.O. Scott called The Sweet Spot.

Portlandia

IFC has renewed its Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein-led comedy series "Portlandia" for both a sixth and seventh season. Ten half-hour episodes will be produced for each with the current team all returning for the new episodes. The show is currently in the midst of airing its fifth season on Thursday nights. If your show runs an hour - or approximately 45 minutes with ad breaks - it's a drama. If it runs approximately half of that, you're looking at a sitcom.

Right? Those are 'the rules' – aren't they?

Perhaps not. Particularly in the last few years, television on both sides of the Atlantic has begun experimenting with format more readily than ever – so why does the half-hour drama remain an uncelebrated form?

It's a proposition I put to actor Frankie J Alvarez – one of the stars of HBO series Looking – in December. There's no hard and fast rule that means a single episode of drama can't last a half hour, is there?

"You're completely right – there is no rule," Alvarez agrees. "Although the powers-that-be have a hard time changing... and so it feels like it is a rule."

We're a bit disappointed. We'd come up with an amazing "is this the Stone Age or the Moan age" headline for 10,000 BC - the new Stone Age reality show which started on Channel 5 tonight - and then none of the participants really whined at all.

Alright, so within two hours a pair of participants had pulled out of the whole shebang but one was just not well enough to take part, while the other was still grieving the loss of his best friend. It was nothing to do with the maggots, the mosquitoes, the nightmare it is to start a fire or the fact that they have to dig a hole in which to poo. ("When you're pooping, number one - don't lean back. Number two - don't put your hand in it. Number three - make sure you don't do it in your hood." Perry might have left but we won't forget him.

"Boyhood" has kept its precursor dominance strong with a win from the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association's Dorian Awards. Richard Linklater’s drama named Film of the Year and Amazon’s transgender comedy picks up five awards from gay and lesbian entertainment critics

The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association named “Boyhood” Film of the Year Tuesday, while also honoring Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne with its top acting prizes. Amazon’s “Transparent” picked up five Dorian Awards on the television side, including TV comedy of the year.

“Star Trek” star George Takei received Galeca’s Timeless Star Tribute, awarded to “an actor or performer whose exemplary career is marked by character, wisdom and wit.”

The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (Galeca) has announced the winners of the annual Dorian Awards! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" took the top honor of Film of the Year. But in a surprising turn of events, Ava DuVernay beat Linklater for her stellar work in "Selma!" Way to go!

Galeca is comprised of over 110 movie and TV critics nationwide, including yours truly, and is one of the few critics associations awarding the year's best in both film and TV.

George Takei took home the Timeless star tribute because, well, he's just pure and simply timeless! This award is given to .an actor or performer whose exemplary career is marked by character, wisdom and wit.. And we all can agree that Takei takes the cake!

A private Winners Toast will be held on Sunday, March 1, in Hollywood.

For Dorian Awards in film, “Birdman” (Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton) lead with five nominations. “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “Maleficent” are also up for awards.

Television nominees include Amazon Studios’ “Transparent,” which snagged five nominations including TV drama of the year and director of the year. Joining the dramedy in nominations are HBO’s “The Normal Heart,” Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” and ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Modern Family.”

By now you've probably heard mention that Steven Soderbergh, he who is officially retired but not really because nobody totally believes it and he still works in various capacities, just posted his list of everything he watched and read this past year. Apparently audiences don’t cherish HBO’s The Comeback as much as reviewers. Despite critical kvelling on its behalf, HBO’s revival of the Lisa Kudrow comedy has turned out to be a ratings dud. After debuting to a disappointing 368,000 viewers on November 9 — and that’s counting same-day viewing as well as three days’ worth of DVR replays as tallied by Nielsen — The Comeback averaged just 230,000 viewers for its November 16 episode and 260,000 viewers on November 23. To put that number in perspective, for the past two weeks, The Comeback has ranked as the least-watched original scripted series on all of cable, drawing fewer eyeballs than Starz’s Saturday import The Missing (279,000 viewers on Nov. 23) or BBC America’s Atlantis (431,000). Even HBO’s own ratings-challenged comedy Getting On has pulled a larger crowd, with the November 23 episode bringing in 400,000 viewers and building on its Comeback lead-in.

It’s game over for El Rey Network’s Matador.
