Exclusive: Universal International Studios (Uis) has boarded The Dream Lands, the BBC and Sister’s apocalyptic climate change series.

Uis has joined the project as co-producer. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution will handle international sales. Penned by BAFTA-winner Kayleigh Llewellyn and based on Rosa Rankin-Gee’s novel, The Dream Lands tells the story of Chance, a young woman who discovers life and love while being forced to fight for her family’s survival in a world that’s crumbling around her in 2039 due to climate change. Chance lives a life of crime just to get by when her community is singled out for a government rejuvenation scheme, promising to bring her coastal town back to life. But when Chance falls in love with Franky, a girl with ties to the establishment, she and those closest to her begin to realise that all may not be as it seems.

The eagerly anticipated TV Drama Vision showcase in Göteborg has unveiled its 2025 program, where 50+ series from some of the best Nordic and European creatives will be showcased over Jan. 28-29, next to a full program of inspiring talks.

“Our curated program is a true team effort. We’ve worked hard and enjoyed every bit of it and I hope our 700+ industry delegates from 30 countries will enjoy it,” said Cia Edström, founder and head of Scandinavia’s biggest drama market.

Shortlisted by TV Drama Vision’s strong selection committee, a record high number of series in development from 14 countries were selected, and the nine series in the works in progress were picked “from the most relevant and captivating stories coming up,” said Edström.

Host country Sweden is out in force, with four projects in post-production, backed by top-tier platforms and broadcasters and stellar talents on both sides of the camera.

Teenage dramas have existed for as long as teens have been drumming up drama in schools and colleges. In the ’60s, there were Because They’re Young and Where the Boys Are. The ‘70s had American Graffiti, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever. The genre exploded in the ‘80s with movies like Dead Poets Society, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Heartstopper is an amazing show that has gained a wide following, thanks to its upbeat tone, dynamic relationships, and willingness to address serious issues. Fans love to root for Nick and Charlie's love story, but they get just as much from seeing Nick's family tensions and Charlie's struggles with mental health.

Galeca, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, bestowed top honors to Max’s “Hacks,” AMC’s “Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire” and Showtime’s “Fellow Travelers” at the 2024 Dorian TV Awards.

“Hacks” took home the most wins with four, including Best TV Comedy and Best Written TV Show, as well as Best TV Performance — Comedy for Smart and Best Supporting TV Performance — Comedy for Hannah Einbinder. That was followed by “Interview With the Vampire,” which won three awards for Best TV Drama, Best LGBTQ TV Show and Best Genre TV Show, a new category for the organization. Finally, “Fellow Travelers” took home two awards: Matt Bomer for Best TV Performance — Drama and Jonathan Bailey for Best Supporting TV Performance — Drama.

Other Dorian Award winners included FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” which took home Best Unsung TV Show, as well as Syfy and USA’s “Chucky,” which scored Campiest TV Show.

A bunch of Hacks lead the winners at the 2024 Dorian TV Awards, which was revealed today by Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. The Emmy-laden Max series took four prizes — including Best TV Comedy and Jean Smart for Best TV Performance, Comedy — followed by AMC’s Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, which landed three.

The 2024 Variety Power of Young Hollywood Party was filled with so many major stars and emerging talent, including honorees Sabrina Carpenter, Marcello Hernández and Sadie Sink.

The young stars posed with their awards at the event held at Santa Monica Proper Hotel on Thursday (August 8) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The three were featured on separate Variety Power of Young Hollywood covers, as the mag recognizes the annual Young Hollywood Impact list, profiling the top young actors, musicians and creators in the industry.

In a post shared by Film Updates on X (formerly Twitter), Jodie Comer can be seen running from zombies in set pictures from the upcoming 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later. Perhaps even more interesting is the sight of Evin Ryding, star of Young Royals, who has yet to be officially cast in the film. The pictures look to all but confirm his involvement, which adds another rising star to an eye-catching cast list that contains some of modern acting's best. After three short seasons, Netflix's Young Royals has finally come to an end. The Swedish LGBTQ+ teen show came out after peers like Love, Victor (itself a spin-off) and Generation had already debuted, and the premise about a royal prince at a boarding school made it look like an outlandish, monarchist fantasy. However, the show defied expectations with a surprisingly grounded and authentic first season and garnered a sizable, passionate fandom worldwide. Teenage soap opera tropes like love triangles unfortunately befell the second season, but the final season made a triumphant comeback by zoning in on the mature, intersectional themes that Young Royals has always been about.

After three seasons, the Swedish Netflix sensation known as Young Royals came to a close last week. The drama series follows the life of a young prince named Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) who struggles to fulfill the expectations set by his royal family. At the very beginning of Young Royals, Wilhelm is not in the direct line for the throne, with that obligation reserved for his older brother, Prince Eric (Ivar Forsling). However, Eric dies in a car crash and Wilhelm becomes next in line to be king. When you think of the greatest teen drama romances, it’s easy to automatically gravitate towards the classics: Pacey and Joey, Willow and Tara, Rory and Jess, and whichever side you were on with the love triangle between Brooke, Lucas, and Peyton. While the ’90s and ’00s were certainly full of great ships, there are also plenty of incredible couples from more recent teen shows worth talking about. Today’s streaming-dominated landscape may mean fewer slow burns, but there have also been positive developments: more characters of color at the center, increased LGBTQ+ representation, and less reliance on problematic tropes. It’s highly unlikely we would have gotten a YA show like Netflix’s Young Royals — which centers on a queer, interracial relationship — back in the early 2000s.

For most of its three-season run, Netflix’s Swedish queer romance Young Royals dealt out as much trauma as it did tenderness. The story of Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding), the spare heir to the Swedish throne and Simon (Omar Rudberg), the scholarship student that steals his heart at a prestigious boarding school, never minced words about the struggle of class disparity, the tragedy of familial loss, the perils of social media (and sex tapes), the wounds of hazing, the sting of betrayal between friends and the political implications of being the next king after your brother dies.

Young Royals will end with its third season as planned by the co-creator, Lisa Ambjörn, being one of the exceptions in LGBTQ+ TV shows. The success of Young Royals was not the reason behind its conclusion, but rather the creator's intention to tell the story in three parts. In the third and final season of Netflix’s Young Royals, Crown Prince Wilhelm of Sweden (Edvin Ryding) and his boyfriend Simon (Omar Rudberg) go public as a couple after seasons of constant back-and-forth. It’s official: Netflix’s Young Royals is making its one last return in its third and final season. As audiences prepare to bid farewell to the halls of Hillerska, the upcoming season also serves as the closing chapter to Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) and Simon’s (Omar Rudberg) tumultuous journey. Since the two first graced our screens in 2021, audiences have borne witness to their rocky romance. From hidden family secrets to salacious school scandals, Wilhelm and Simon’s relationship is anything but normal.

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!

Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Exclusive: Young Royals star Malte Gardinger has signed for representation with United Agents in the UK, as the Netflix show nears its final return next month.

Gardinger quietly signed last year, following two seasons of Young Royals, in which he plays Årnäs, a member of a noble family, second cousin of Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) and school prefect.

The third and final season of Young Royals, which Nexiko makes for Netflix Sweden, is set to launch on March 11 globally. The show stars Ryding as the fictional Crown Prince of Sweden, who begins a romance with fellow student Simon Eriksson (Omar Rudberg). Lisa Ambjörn, Lars Beckung and Camilla Holter are the co-creators.

As the final work in progress wrapped on Friday, Göteborg ‘s head of TV Drama Vision Cia Edström and head of industry and Nordic Film Market Josef Kullengård could finally relax after a mission well accomplished.

Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:

As many as 2,029 accredited delegates registered for the festival and industry showcases at the 47th Göteborg Film Festival, and parallel TV and film markets, the largest in the Nordic region. “We’ve never hit this silver line,” said Kullengård. The 18th TV Drama Vision drew 729 delegates, the Nordic Film Market 556.

It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.

Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.

At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”

“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

Omar Ayuso, who shares the same name as his character, is a pillar of the teen telenovela Elite. He’s been around since the first season of Netflix’s Spanish hit, captivating viewers via his tender romance with heartthrob Ander, played by Arón Piper, and the jarring disapproval his character faces in his Muslim household.

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has named the winners of its 15th Dorian TV Awards with the final season of HBO’s Succession and ABC’s Abbott Elementary taking top drama and comedy honors, respectively.
