It's a well-known fact that, in life, things are not always what they seem, and sometimes that which seems unassuming can contain a surprisingly deep well of power and resilience. There isn't a better way to sum up director Steven Spielberg's early works, especially the TV movie "Duel," its plot, and its star, Dennis Weaver. In 1971, when "Duel" was released, Weaver was still best known for his recurring role on the long-running Western series "Gunsmoke." Meanwhile, Spielberg was only barely known, having gained a bit of a reputation as the protege of then-Universal president Sidney "Sid" Sheinberg, after the precocious young Spielberg had directed a short film that impressed Sheinberg, 1968's "Amblin'" (a film which Spielberg would later homage by naming his production company after it). On the strength of that short, Spielberg was given the opportunity to become part of McA/Universal's burgeoning television division, directing episodes...

We are firmly in the era of streaming and rapidly moving away from what was once the dominant force in TV. Cable is dying a slow death and traditional TV networks are increasingly becoming less relevant. It's a streaming-dominated world. Netflix spends nearly $20 billion annually on original movies and TV shows as the king of the streamers, and it's just one of many. Still, as often as new stuff gains traction on streaming services, it's often older shows (or movies) that give any single service value. This is increasingly becoming part of the strategy for these companies, and there's even a name for it. Welcome to the age of newstalgia.
During a panel at this year's SXSW in Austin, Texas titled "Measuring Film & TV Streaming Viewership," Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson talked a lot about the popular free streamer's strategy. That has increasingly involved originals, such as "Killer Body Count...

Everyone has to start somewhere when they're breaking into Hollywood. These days, "starting somewhere" can mean making videos on YouTube, or serving as a production assistant on a reality TV show, or anything else. The divide between television and film is now so blurred that to work in one medium is not seen as a black mark on a person's career when they want to move to a different medium. But there was a time when those who wanted to make movies would be strongly encouraged to steer clear of TV, because those who worked primarily on the small screen would have an awfully hard time making the jump to the big screen.
But there are always exceptions to these rules, even before the idea of new media came along to shake up the notion of transitioning from TV to film. The biggest possible exception to any such rule is Steven Spielberg.

Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson's hit streaming series, Poker Face, is set to return this year. And, well? The list of people they've finagled to guest star in Season 2 is actually unhinged. Like, the list of people who are going to be on this show is truly outrageous and unfathomable to someone like me, a person who does not cast television shows. But if I did? And I managed to pull this off? I'd be screaming it from the rooftop, folks. Because this cast list? It's truly the best of the best of the funniest, most talented people currently working in Hollywood.
And it seems that Lyonne and Johnson recognize that, sending along a note with the press release teasing the series' forthcoming slate of episodes. And though we don't know the exact premiere date yet — all it says is "Spring 2025" — we do know the 12, 60-minute-long episodes will feature Many very,...

Whether you love case-of-the-week mysteries or crime-solving duos, these shows deliver.
I’m a huge Kaitlin Olson fa n—”It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is one of my all-time favorite shows. So when I heard she was leading “High Potential,” I was immediately in, and the comedic crime procedural did not disappoint. Olson brings her signature charm, wit, and impeccable comic timing to the role of Morgan, a single mom with a brilliant (Iq over 160) but unconventional mind who helps the police crack tough cases. It’s part crime procedural, part comedy, part heartfelt… and full fun.
If you just watched the season finale of “High Potential” and need something to fill the void, don’t worry — I’ve got you covered. Whether you’re craving more quirky detectives, crime-solving with a side of humor, or just a show that balances mystery with great character moments, there are plenty of other crime dramedies worth streaming.

132 rooms. 157 suspects. 1 dead body. That’s the premise behind The Residence, a comedic mystery thriller produced by Shonda Rhimes that's set to hit Netflix this March. Filmmaker Jeannot Szwarc earned directing credits on 80 different projects over the course of a career that spanned more than 50 years – but most movie fans will likely remember him as the director of the shark thriller sequel Jaws 2, the time travel romance Somewhere in Time, and/or the DC Comics adaptation Supergirl. Sadly, Szwarc is no longer with us, as his Somewhere in Time star Jane Seymour took to social media to confirm that he has passed away at the age of 85. Seymour wrote, “Today, we say goodbye to a true visionary. Jeannot Szwarc was not just a brilliant director but a kind and generous soul. He gifted us many timeless stories, including Somewhere in Time, a film that changed my life forever. May his memory be a blessing, and may his artistry live on in our hearts.“

A potential storytelling change is in the air for Elsbeth, and it could make or break the mystery series. The Carrie Preston-led spinoff of The Good Wife focuses on quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni, who uses her unique skill set to help the police solve homicides while also observing the NYPD to ensure they are following protocol. Few characters from The Good Wife have appeared on Elsbeth; instead, the mystery show is mostly a stand-alone series that is far more lighthearted than its parent show.
For most of its run, Elsbeth has followed the format made popular by the classic detective drama Columbo. Most episodes open with the murder of the week so that the audience knows who the killer is. Elsbeth's title character carries a lot of bags and engages in other quirky behavior while solving the case, which often lulls perps into the false belief that she's too...

One of 2024’s most pleasant surprises, A Man on the Inside, is getting a Season 2 renewal on Netflix! The harmless, heartfelt, and low-stakes TV comedy series is precisely what the doctor ordered for escapism in a year of entertainment overrun by star-studded dramas, big-budget sci-fi epics, and good ideas canceled after one season. A Man on the Inside debuted on Netflix three weeks ago, making the show’s Season 2 order a quick turnaround for a 2025 premiere.
In A Man on the Inside, Ted Danson plays Charles, a retired man who gets a new lease on life when he answers a Pi’s ad and becomes a mole in a secret investigation. Consisting of eight thirty-minute episodes, A Man on the Inside is based on the documentary The Mole Agent, a 2021 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

Note: This story contains spoilers for the Dec. 12 episode of “Elsbeth”
Michael Emerson and Carrie Preston have often acted together throughout their marriage, and this week the “Evil” star made his debut on “Elsbeth” as haughty judge Milton Crawford, who clashes with Elsbeth Tascioni when she’s put on one of his juries.
Emerson previously speculated with TheWrap that he would not be the killer on the murder-of-the-week series, as that would be “too obvious,” since he so memorably played villains on both “Evil” and “Lost.”
As it turned out, Crawford is very much a killer, one who manages to elude Elsbeth, at least for now. As Preston told TheWrap, the quirky-lawyer-turned-sleuth has “met her match” in the elusive judge, who will recur throughout the season.
The actress also talked about worrying she put a curse on Emerson when she had to stick a pin in a photo of him on set,...

The thing about episodes of "Columbo" is that they're kind of like slices of pizza: even when they're not that great, they're still pretty wonderful. There really aren't any god-awful episodes of "Columbo," and ranking the best of them is a challenge. "Columbo" is pure comfort, a show that feels like a warm hug because Peter Falk as the titular detective is the ultimate dream of what justice should look like. Columbo almost always gets his villain, the bad guys are usually the rich and entitled, and the world feels like a better place, all within the span of 90 minutes or so. I've already written at length about which "Columbo" episodes are the absolute best (in my humble opinion), but how did Falk feel about the series?
Back in the early 1990s, Falk did a special for A&e where he went over his favorite episodes from the NBC era of the series,...

The best Columbo episodes show why the series has been called one of the best murder mystery shows of all time. Peter Falk created one of the most unique and brilliant fictional detectives with his performance as the titular cop. Columbo is a lieutenant who investigates murders and suspicious deaths with his own distinct oddball approach. He comes across as a bit of a bumbling sleuth, but as he gradually and politely digs deeper into the truth, he always cracks the case.
Columbo set itself apart from many murder mystery shows of its kind by showing the audience who the killer is upfront. The format of the show then focuses on the killer's attempts to get away and cover up the crime, only for Columbo to start snooping around. It is a series that perfectly blends murderous intrigue with a charming sense of humor. Falk is unforgettable in the lead role.

Crime dramas are one of the most popular genres of television, and for good reason. There are few plot structures with as much built-in conflict and intrigue as a mystery, and film and TV shows have been capitalizing on this for a long time. Some of the best mystery series of the 2020s incorporate a little humor and light-hearted fun into their plots, all while crafting an interesting story with plenty of twists and turns. When it comes to crime dramas, the TV shows that aren't afraid to poke fun at the genre are some of the easiest to rewatch.
Many classic murder mystery TV shows follow the procedural format, and this has long been the case with mystery and crime shows. Due to their episodic format, these series can be looser with their dramatic elements and might need to lighten the tone to keep the audience engaged throughout the story.

Murder in a Small Town is the ideal cozy mystery series, but it could improve in several ways if it gets a second season.
Even though Fox airs the series in the United States, the show feels like a Canadian procedural with a twist. It featured prominent Canadian actors and was filmed primarily in Gibsons, which has the same name as the series.
The series typically uses a murder-of-a-week format instead of a lingering case throughout the season. It’s been compared to classics like Murder She Wrote and Columbo.
(Fox/ YouTube Screenshot)
While the series has been entertaining, Global TV and Fox must address some issues to renew it for a second season.
Adapting the Source Material So Cases Breathe Better
Book-to-screen adaptations, especially mystery procedurals, are often challenging when the series strives to cover an overlying theme and a case-of-the-week. They also need to balance character dynamics and interpersonal relationships.

It seems only right on All Hallows Eve that Jamie Lee Curtis might be cryptically teasing another go-round with the unstoppable Michael Myers in the Halloween franchise. However, the conversation took an intriguing turn when Curtis also insinuated that she might not be done with The Shape just yet. Curtis told Entertainment Weekly:

In the fall of 1984, CBS found a surprise hit with a show about a retired widow turned best-selling mystery novelist and amateur sleuth. On September 30, 1984, Angela Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher began her reign as TV’s premier amateur detective, making “Murder, She Wrote” a top 10 show for much of its 12-year run. Created by Richard Levinson and William Link, the minds behind the successful “Columbo” series, and Peter S. Fischer, “Murder She Wrote” was both a throwback to popular whodunnit series of the past and a groundbreaking series that ushered in a new era of representation for middle-aged women on TV.
After Jean Stapleton declined the role, Lansbury signed on to play J.B. Fletcher, over a decade after playing Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple in “The Mirror Crack’d” (1980). A full-time TV series was new territory for the 58-year-old, a four-time Tony winner (at the time) and thrice-time Oscar-nominated veteran actress.

The duo memorably played the ‘by the book’ police partners Taggart and Rosewood in the hit comedy franchise starring Eddie Murphy. Ashton was the straight man and Reinhold the clown in what became a beloved comedy pairing in the movies.
Reinhold said last night: “Thursday night John seemed like he was sleeping but the Yankees were on. They won the game, clinched the division then John made it to home. Forty years of laughs on screen and off. John Lived his life! My brother, my partner, my Sarge – I love you. There’s no smoking in Heaven, John.”

There are few television shows as warm and comforting as "Columbo," the long-running mystery series starring Peter Falk as the eponymous detective. Each episode begins with a murder, and the fun isn't trying to figure out whodunnit but instead watching Columbo put together the pieces and catch the bad guy. Whether you're watching one of the original 1970s television episodes or one of the movie-of-the-week "episodes" that came out all the way through 2003, you can sit secure in the knowledge that Columbo will probably take the rich and powerful down a peg or two and be almost impossibly lovable while doing it. Despite the fact that Peter Falk wasn't originally the series' creator's choice to play Columbo, he is what makes the show so incredible watchable as he seems to aimlessly wander through crime scenes in his rumpled trench coat and ruin criminals' days with his trademark "just one more thing.

Jeff Goldblum, 25, has forgotten his mantra. At least, his nameless party guest character – dubbed “Man on the Phone” in the screenplay – has. And it’s the way he delivered that line in 1977’s Annie Hall that made him stand out despite only having a few seconds of screen time. Somehow – just by being himself – Jeff Goldblum turned a throwaway bit into one of the funniest lines in one of the funniest films.
As for Jeff Goldblum himself, he says his mantras are “I am grateful” and “Accept, enjoy, enthuse.” And that, across 50 years on the big screen, is as truthful as it gets when it comes to Jeff Goldblum.
Let’s find out: What Happened to…Jeff Goldblum?

Canadian actor William Shatner began his professional career in the early 1950s, appearing in an obscure film called "The Butler's Night Off." He worked in theaters, both as a manager and as an actor, in Montreal and Ottawa, and acted in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in the mid-1950s. He moved to the United States shortly thereafter to pursue a Broadway career, and made ends meet by appearing on an episode of the Canadian version of "The Howdy Doody Show." Shatner racked up dozens of credits in film and on TV throughout the '50s and '60s, appearing in adaptations of "The Brother Karamazov" and "Judgment at Nuremberg" and on notable programs like "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "The Twilight Zone." In 1965, Shatner starred in "Incubus," the only feature film ever made in Esperanto.
Then, in 1966, Shatner landed the lead role in a new science fiction series called "Star Trek.

During the mid-1970s, television producer Aaron Spelling and the writing duo of Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts hit upon the most spectacularly novel idea: Viewers loved watching women solve crimes. The eureka moment occurred in 1974 when the great and ludicrously beautiful Angie Dickinson scored a primetime hit with "Police Woman." While I'd argue Dickinson could've burned up the Nielsen ratings via weekly readings of Russian literature shot at the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, she was a must-watch sensation as a glamorously attired detective. Though the scripts were rigorously formulaic for a '70s hour-long cop show, Dickinson's showbiz rep attracted a host of top tier guest stars; "Police Woman" didn't have much of a hook, but thanks to its star, it had plenty of sizzle.
It took some prodding (ABC execs Barry Diller and Michael Eisner abhorred Spelling's pitch), but "Charlie's Angels" became the breakout hit of the 1976 season.

2016 was a pretty good year for FX as five wins at the Primetime Emmys for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story helped it to a total 18 trophies at the 68th Emmy Awards.
Eight years on, with new owners in the shape of The Walt Disney Company, it was an even better night for John Landgraf’s team.
FX won 36 awards across Primetime Emmys and the Creative Arts Awards, helped by record-breaking showings for Shōgun and The Bear. It was FX’s best ever Emmy performance and its most significant since the night Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown picked up awards for the Ryan Murphy-created limited series, as well as a win for Baskets’ Louie Anderson.
The network managed to break the hegemony of HBO and Netflix, which have been battling it out for most wins since the Reed Hastings-founded company entered original programming over a decade ago.

Some fictional characters are so intrinsically tied to the people who portrayed them that it's nearly impossible to picture anyone else in that role. Columbo, the disheveled detective who helped take down the bad guys on TV over three decades on the series of the same name, just couldn't be anyone but Peter Falk. That's like suggesting someone other than Alan Alda play the television version of Hawkeye on "M.A.S.H."! Dressed in an eternally-wrinkled, too-big trenchcoat and always chomping on a cigar, Falk brings both a unique appearance and performance to the character, looking and acting unlike any other cop on TV. Without Falk, "Columbo" may never have been successful, and it certainly wouldn't have been the same. Back when the series was first being developed, however, the people in charge had some very different performers in mind.

The late great Peter Falk was born on September 16, 1927, and his detective drama “Columbo” is as timeless as it is entertaining. In the whole of television history, few actors have been as identified with a single character than was Falk with Lieutenant Columbo, the eccentric, rumpled, cigar-chomping, trench coat-clad, implausibly wily Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective who always got his man. In the process, Falk and the producers revolutionized what a cop show could be.
It’s been more than a half-century since Falk began portraying the world’s favorite lieutenant as part of the rotating “NBC Mystery Movie” franchise on September 15, 1971. It would grow to become a global phenomenon originally across eight seasons (1971-78), then again sporadically from 1989 to 2003. The series itself would win 13 Emmys..

For some of us, there are few things in this world more comforting than classic television. Back before "prestige TV" was really a thing and getting people to tune in was sometimes just a matter of hiring the biggest guest stars possible, things were a little different. There's just something about turning on the TV and settling in for a an episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series" or "Columbo" and knowing that matters will be resolved by the end of the show's runtime and that Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk) and Captain Kirk (William Shatner) always get the bad guy. Both are also pretty progressive; Columbo (an idealized lawman) routinely takes down the rich and powerful of Los Angeles, while "Star Trek" has always been socially conscious, aiming for a utopian society.
