Portraying a Marvel superhero is no easy feat. Not only do actors have the shoulder the expectations of millions and millions of rabid fans, but they have to try and maintain the physical standards of, well, superheroes. They don't just have to be fit, but have to be unrealistically muscular and lean, which leads to all kinds of intense dieting, harsh workouts, and possibly even steroid use. Sure, they often wear costumes that are specifically tailored to make them look extra ripped, but there are almost always scenes showing off a bit of skin, which means a whole lot of hard work behind-the-scenes.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "Ant-Man" star Paul Rudd revealed that he had to undergo an extremely restrictive diet while training to play Scott Lang, a.k.a. the titular Ant-Man. That meant eating very specific foods with lots of protein and limiting his intake...

CAAMFest 2024 had its own fair share of student films – and this year, we gathered up five (!) student teams to speak to one another. The roundtable consisted of generous description of “student,” including a PhD and a high schooler, MFAs and recent grads. Harleen Kaur Bal, a PhD student at Uc Davis, told us about “Unpacking Immigration,” a short film about Punjabi workers at meatpacking plants in California. UCLA grad Emory Chao Johnson recalled their graduation film, “默 (To Write from Memory),” an experimental mother-child film about gender transition. UCLA grad Jacqueline Chan's nostalgic short “Chan is Fishing” meditates upon her father, an aging Hong Kong immigrant, searching for a spot to fish in the desert. San Diego State University crew Laura Skokan, Shao Chiu Yen, and Nguyen Ha Uyen Phan recounted their experience behind “The Fanatics,” a true story-inspired tale about slipping into a Taiwanese cult. Finally, NYU-bound Kaiya...

Nothing, Except Everything is getting a big-screen treatment. That’s the name of a short film that earned plaudits for young writer/director Wesley Wang when it premiered last September. Wang has now inked a deal with Darren Aronofsky‘s Protozoa for a feature adaptation of Nothing, Except Everything.
According to Deadline, TriStar Pictures has picked up the film rights for Nothing, Except Everything. Wang’s 13-minute short film, which explores existential themes in a high school setting, was already a film festival darling before its breakout on YouTube. At the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, Wang won the Summer White Lynch Memorial Award, which goes to an outstanding high school filmmaker. The 19-year-old Harvard student completed Nothing, Except Everything during his senior year of high school.

Exclusive: Following a competitive situation with what we hear were four offers, TriStar Pictures has snapped up film rights to Wesley Wang’s nothing, except everything., a short film that Wang will adapt for the big screen as writer and director, with Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa producing.
A 19-year-old currently studying economics at Harvard, Wang made nothing, except everything. during his senior year of high school, seeing it go viral on YouTube and win the Grand Jury Prize at Indianapolis’s Indy Shorts Film Festival. Billed as a romantic sci-fi thriller, the film watches as a graduating high schooler navigates a world of seemingly inevitable chaos by finding order in the number 7. Based on that logline, it’s not hard to see how Harvard alum Aronofsky might have sparked to the material, similar as it is to that of his 1998 debut feature, Pi.

Bill Skarsgård's role in Boy Kills World eerily mirrors his brother Alexander's character in Mute. Despite the uncanny similarities, Boy Kills World promises better storytelling and action than the critically panned Mute. Bill's star-studded cast and captivating visuals in Boy Kills World suggest he may outshine his brother in this thrilling new film.
Bill Skarsgård's title role in the new action thriller Boy Kills World weirdly resembles a character his older brother Alexander played in a 2018 sci-fi film. Indeed, the two have quite a lot in common - besides being the offspring of noteworthy actor Stellan Skarsgård, Bill and Alexander share similarly decades-long and illustrious careers in the TV and movie industries. Bill struck it big with roles in titles such as John Wick: Chapter 4, the It franchise, and Marvel’s Eternals, while Alexander forged a lasting impact in True Blood, Big Little Lies, and Succession.

16 years after the faux trailer debuted as part of Grindhouse, Eli Roth finally delivered the feature version of Thanksgiving. There were no leftovers, but among the special features on the slasher’s home video release is an audio commentary by Roth and producer-writer Jeff Rendell.
Here are 10 things I learned from the Thanksgiving commentary…
1. The concept dates back to the filmmakers’ childhoods.
Thanksgiving is based on Roth’s faux trailer from Grindhouse, but its origins date back even further than 2007. Best friends since kindergarten, Roth and Rendell grew up in Newton, Massachusetts (about an hour from Plymouth) watching horror movies together.
Inspired by a pivotal theatrical viewing of Silent Night, Deadly Night circa 1984, they longed for a definitive Thanksgiving slasher in the vein of the other holiday horrors.
“We just started thinking of like, ‘What if there was a Thanksgiving slasher movie? You could put someone in an oven, and there was a killer pilgrim,...

The animated film, which is being created with Epic’s 3D tool Unreal Engine 5, was adapted by Jones from the comic book published by 2000 Ad, home to “Judge Dredd,” “Halo Jones” and “Sláine.” “Rogue Trooper,” produced by Rebellion and Liberty Films, has wrapped principal photography at Rebellion Film Studios in the U.K. The film is set to be finished next year.
Barnard stars as the eponymous Rogue Trooper. Cast alongside him are Atwell, Lowden, Daryl McCormack and Reece Shearsmith.

Alexander Skarsgård has more or less dominated television screens for the past decade. Between his Emmy winning villainous turn in Big Little Lies, his quietly charismatic espionage agent in Little Drummer Girl, and his scene-stealing tech giant on Succession, Skarsgård is a true chameleon that embodies the “character actor in a leading man’s body” description perfectly. On the film side, Skarsgård’s best work has tended to be in smaller, cutting edge genre projects that aren’t intended to be blockbusters. As beautifully deranged as Infinity Pool, The Northman, Hold the Dark, Mute, The Hummingbird Project, and Melancholia are, they weren’t intended to launch Skarsgård as a leading man on the level of say Robert Downey Jr. or Tom Cruise. However, Skarsgård did star in one of the strangest box office sensations in recent memory when he appeared in 2016’s The Legend of Tarzan, a film that landed...

Ridley Scott reflects on his time making Blade Runner, revealing that he was in business with "horrendous" people. Scott recalls being told that the movie was "too slow," but points out that it's now considered "one of the most important science-fiction films ever made". Despite initial lackluster reception, Blade Runner eventually found its audience, popularizing the cyberpunk subgenre with its dark and grimy vision of the future.
Blade Runner director Ridley Scott candidly reflects on the negative feedback he received regarding his science-fiction classic. Loosely based on Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Scott's seminal 1982 film follows Harrison Ford's blade runner, Rick Deckard, as he embarks on a mission to terminate four replicants. The movie wasn't a big box office hit and nor did it strike a chord with critics upon its release, but it's now widely considered a science-fiction masterpiece.

Of all the unbelievable trends in the film industry’s recent history, Netflix’s rise to become the top producer and distributor of new movies isn't one that many film fans would have seen coming. Although now the streaming services seems to be chasing buzzy award season titles like Maestro and May December for distribution deals and putting together intended blockbuster projects similar to The Gray Man and The Old Guard, there was a brief period of time when Netflix seemed to be green lighting many of the “cool, yet sadly undeveloped” projects that major directors had been working on for years. Martin Scorsese finally got to make his expensive crime epic The Irishman, The Raid’s Gareth Evans was able to experiment with the wild horror film Apostle, and Steven Soderbergh put together both High Flying Bird and The Laundromat in the same year. It was during this stretch...

"Mute," directed by Duncan Jones, was released in 2018 but failed to impress both critics and audiences, earning low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's visuals are stunning, but its narrative lacks substance, and comparisons to "Blade Runner" only highlighted its shortcomings. While Netflix's sci-fi TV shows have been highly acclaimed, their original sci-fi movies often disappoint, with "Mute" being one of many panned by critics.
In 2018, Netflix released its own sci-fi noir in the mold of Blade Runner entitled Mute, but unlike Ridley Scott’s futuristic masterpiece, it was panned by both critics and audiences. Directed by David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, Mute revolves around a bartender searching for the missing love of his life in Berlin in 2035. Jones had proven himself as a formidable sci-fi filmmaker with 2009’s Moon, and the cast includes such stars as Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux, but Mute was a resounding failure.

Emancipation boasts an exemplary cast who bring the characters to life in a harrowing story. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Emancipation marks Will Smith’s return to film following the controversy surrounding his highly publicized Oscars slap. Emancipation is based on a true story of an enslaved man who escaped to freedom and joined the Union army in 1863.
Emancipation was first announced in June 2020, and began filming a year later in 2021. The film was stuck for a while, with a proposed postponement potentially in the cards because of the controversy surrounding Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards. However, Emancipation’s release date was ultimately not affected very much, debuting in limited theaters December 2 before streaming on Apple TV+ December 9.

Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor and Mustafa Shakir have joined the cast of Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming thriller “Emancipation,” starring Will Smith.
Smith stars as Peter, a runaway slave who flees Louisiana in hopes of traveling north to freedom. “Emancipation” is inspired by the true story of “Whipped Peter,” an enslaved person who emancipated himself from a southern plantation and joined the Union Army. In 1863, photos taken of Peter during an Army medical examination first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” shows the scars from a whipping on Peter’s bare back, illustrating the true cruelty of slavery and ultimately contributed to growing public opposition.

This week, British actor, writer and director Noel Clarke has made headlines after being accused of groping, harassment and bullying by 20 women.
Clarke played Mickey Smith in “Doctor Who” from 2005 to 2010 and starred as Sam in the films “Kidulthood,” “Adulthood” and “Brotherhood,” which he wrote and directed, intent on bringing more representations of working-class Britain to screen. Clarke also writes, produces and plays Aaron Bishop in the British police procedural series “Bulletproof,” alongside close friend Ashley Walters.
Clarke made his film debut in 2003’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and has since starred in movies including “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Centurion,” “4.3.2.1.,” “Fast Girls,” “Storage 24,” “I Am Soldier,” “The Anomaly,” “I Kill Giants,” “Mute,” “10×10,” “The Corrupted,” “Twist” and “Sas: Red Notice.”
In 2015, Clarke founded the London-based production company Unstoppable Film and Television with Jason Maza, eventually securing investment from super-indie All3Media, which owns “Fleabag” producer Two Brothers and “1917” outfit Neal Street Productions.

Duncan Jones is no stranger to adapting video games for the big screen, as the co-writer of Universal Pictures’ 2016 “Warcraft” adaptation, which he also directed. That film was an infamous critical flop, but it hasn’t deterred Jones from giving other video games the movie treatment. Case in point: A 92-page script adaptation of the 1995 video game “Full Throttle” written in quarantine during a bit of writer’s block. Jones self-published the script for free on Dropbox.
“I enjoy writing. I also hate writing. Sometimes, when I cant squeeze out the thing I want to write, I write something else. This has happened a lot during Covid,” Jones wrote on Twitter, adding that he was inspired to pivot to adapting “Full Throttle” after he saw a friend’s animated reimagining of the video game on Vimeo. “If nothing else, it gave me a chance to do a bit of action comedy.

Though the films don’t necessarily have as many connections as you might expect from a film franchise, Duncan Jones’ features, “Moon” and “Mute,” do take place in the same sci-fi world and are part of a larger story. Unfortunately, though “Moon” (starring Sam Rockwell) was a critical success, 2018’s “Mute” (which stars Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd) wasn’t warmly received by critics and fans when it hit Netflix.

Duncan Jones’ “Mooniverse” trilogy is coming to an end with the debut of his graphic novel “Madi: Once Upon A Time In The Future.” The book is the third and final entry in Jones’ science-fiction series that launched in 2009 with his indie film favorite “Moon” and continued with his polarizing 2018 Netflix original movie “Mute.” Each entry tells a different story set within the same universe. Jones’ “Moon,” starring Sam Rockwell in a dual role, was a critical favorite and has become a cult favorite over the last decade. Jones announced last summer he would complete the “Mooniverse” with a graphic novel, and now a Kickstarter has launched (via Empire) in which fans can purchase the final product and get a first look at the book.
“Madi” is billed as a “260-page road trip graphic novel” from Jones and writer Alex de Campi. The two collaborators partnered with artists such as Glenn Fabry,...

The writer-director turned to comics because his next story would have been too costly to film. He and his ‘Yoda’ Alex de Campi explain their very timely project
When film-maker Duncan Jones decided to tell the third story in his tangentially linked science fiction trilogy, following Moon (2009) and the 2018 Netflix series Mute, he ran into a problem: the tale he wanted to tell was so vast that it would need a crippling budget to get it filmed.
So Jones – the British-born, La-based son of David Bowie and his first wife Angie – decided to tell the final part of his so-called Mooniverse trilogy, Madi, in a whole new medium: comics.

I wanted Sam Rockwell to play the villain in Mute, a film I later made for Netflix. But he wanted to play a blue-collar kind of guy. We both liked the sci-fi films of the 70s and early 80s – Silent Running, Alien, Outland – and the sense of realism and mundanity they brought to space, with a lot of the day-to-day grind comparable to jobs on Earth. Filmmaker Duncan Jones is moving forward with the final movie in his “Moon” film trilogy, just not in the way many fans are probably expecting. The trilogy, which includes Jones’ 2009 indie favorite “Moon” and his 2018 Netflix misfire “Mute,” will end with a final entry that will make its debut as a graphic novel. The director recently told Polygon he’s unsure whether or not he’ll be able to acquire the necessary budget to make a third film, so he’s going the graphic novel route to ensure the story gets out there.
“Yeah, that one’s been done for a while,” Jones said when asked about the third and final film in the trilogy. “I’m working on a graphic novel of it right now. It’s a bigger film. It’s going to be a tricky one to finance in this era where original material on a bigger...

Earlier this month we saw one-time comedian and Comedy Central star Jordan Peele continue on his journey to becoming one of the undisputed modern masters of horror with his doppelganger flick Us. And today we have word that fellow Comedy Central alumni and Broad City actress/creator Ilana Glazer may be looking to follow in Peele's footsteps with her upcoming horror movie False Positive. Glazer co-wrote the psychological horror film and will also produce for A24, and she will be joined in the cast by Justin Theroux and Pierce Brosnan as filming begins on Monday.
Exact plot details are being kept under wraps.
For those who might not know, Ilana Glazer is most well known for creating the hit series Broad City. But the comedian, actress, writer has also starred in Lucia Aniello's Rough Night co-starring Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell, Zoë Kravitz, and Kate McKinnon; and Jonathan Levine's...

Netflix has ordered an eight-episode comedy series, “Living With Yourself” starring Paul Rudd in a dual role.
Rudd will star as a man struggling with his life who undergoes a novel treatment to become a better person, and finds he’s been replaced by a new and improved version — revealing that his own worst enemy is himself. The series was created by “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” alum Timothy Greenberg, who will serve as showrunner.
Netflix says Rudd will star in the first season of the show. He is the only cast attached to the series as of now. The project was initially set at cable network IFC as part of its 2016-2017 development slate, though Rudd was not attached at the time.

Duncan Jones, the director behind Moon, Warcraft, and Mute, is set to direct his first TV series, which will be an adaptation of the novel thriller Killer Intent. As a fan of Jones and his work, it's good to see him jump on another project, which I'm sure he'll end up directing before he gets to his recently announced film Rogue Trooper. Just in case you're not familiar with Killer Intent, here's some information:
Killer Intent is the first in a series of thrillers about a Jack Reacher-type intelligence agent Joe Dempsey. In the novel, when an attempted assassination sparks a chain reaction of dangerous events across London, Britain’s elite security forces are powerless to stop the chaos threatening to overwhelm the Government. As a dark conspiracy unfolds, three strangers find their fates entwined: Dempsey; Sarah Truman, a CNN reporter determined to get her headline; and Michael Devlin, a...

Duncan Jones, who won a BAFTA for his debut feature “Moon,” is to direct a television adaptation of Tony Kent’s thriller “Killer Intent.” The series will be produced by Liberty Films, the London- and L.A.-based production company of Stuart Fenegan and Jones, who is David Bowie’s son.
Kent will adapt his novel alongside an “American-style writers’ room of established TV talent,” according to a statement. Jones will executive produce alongside Fenegan, who acquired the screen rights for “Killer Intent” in advance of the hardback release earlier this year.
It will be Liberty’s first foray into television. Jones and Fenegan have previously worked exclusively in feature films with credits such as “Moon,” “Source Code,” “Warcraft” and “Mute.”
Jones said: “Tony’s writing style is already so cinematic, working with him and a room of writers to adapt his first book will be a thrill. I’m...

Soon after Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston announced their split, fans were determined to figure out why they're divorcing. On top of that, they're curious how Jen feels since their highly-publicized breakup. And in a candid new interview, the actress revealed just that. "It’s pretty crazy. The misconceptions are 'Jen can’t keep a man' and 'Jen refuses to have a baby because she’s selfish and committed to her career.' Or that I’m sad and heartbroken. First, with all due respect, I’m not heartbroken," she told InStyle. Jen continued, "And second, those are reckless assumptions. No one knows what’s going on behind closed doors. No one considers how sensitive that might be for my partner and me. They don’t know what I’ve been through medically or emotionally. There is a pressure on women to be mothers, and if they are not, then they’re deemed damaged goods.

Universal offloaded this glossy sci-fi tale to the streaming platform and, despite a script from the writer of Arrival, it’s easy to see why
If we couldn’t safely presume Netflix is gathering data about our collective viewing habits to develop optimally profitable programming, the streaming site’s full-court press into science-fiction would seem a bit incongruous, or at least curious. In just the last year, Netflix has either produced or acquired Okja, Annihilation (for non-us audiences), Mute, The Titan, What Happened to Monday, Anon, How It Ends and The Cloverfield Paradox, and together those films have run the whole gamut from great to gratuitously bad.

Though, he did add that it's a "special one" and that he would be teasing a bit more about it in a few days. So, the question naturally becomes, what comic book is Jones going to be adapting for the big screen?

Director Ben Young made a name for himself in the indie film world with his grisly psychological horror-thriller “Hounds of Love,” and now he’s taking a similar psychodrama approach and applying it to the science-fiction drama. Ladies and gentlemen, as I seem to find myself saying around this point each and every single year…time really does fly. Believe it or not, we’re now a full three months into the 2018 movie calendar, which means we’re literally a quarter of the way through the film slate for the year. Wow. That got me thinking about what the best of the bunch so far this year has been. Since now is the time when the film slate begins to transition into summer releases and counter programming independent fare ramps up, I thought it was the perfect time to praise the best of 2018 so far. Basically, anything that hit screens between January 1st and March 31st will be up for grabs here for my personal honors. Once again, here goes nothing! So far, 2018 has actually been on the stronger side of things, at least in my humble opinion.

It looks like Netflix has yet another critical dud on their hands with their latest release, Game Over, Man! Following on the heels of similarly-loathed (by movie reviewers, anyway) original films like The Cloverfield Paradox, Mute, and Bright, the streaming giant looks to have come up short once again. Netflix’s latest critical punching bag is an action/comedy from the minds behind the hit Comedy Central show Workaholics. The trio of stars from that recently concluded series — Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, and Blake Anderson — reunite for Game Over, Man!, but their stoner-ific riff on Die Hard is being met with some absolutely savage reviews.
